Corrin will also raise his hand. Appropriate clothing for the conditions or no, enduring the heat would still be uncomfortable, magical assistance would eliminate the discomfort entirely.

Vona too raised her hand. While she'd be fine in a desert (the ability to summon water at will does wonders to avoid heat stroke), the humidity of the jungle makes it infeasible here. She also takes up Hoggie up on his offer of a ride; she couldn't deny that her shorter leg-span was slowing them down somewhat and if there was a way to ameliorate that, she should take advantage of it.

How ironic that the gnome who seems to have a problem with the babbling man should so enjoy being led around all day in his floating radio flyer disc. A brave coterie of strange and talented individuals ... and she is just chilling in the concave force effect. However, it does do the trick, and the party is able to make significantly better speed.
    Spoiler: Hoggie, Vona
    Show
Brilliant effect, and now you will be able to do just a normal day of movement and make it in time without forced marching ... all on the power of a single casting of floating disk.

Vona, you realize that when Hoggie "cast" he spell, he didn't "do" anything. He simply concentrated, and willed it into existence.

And it exists all day long. It may be a minor magical effect, but no minor caster can make that spell last a full day of movement.

The caution is excellently metered as it does get quite warm, but Rabbi Cohen (himself immune to the heat of the hottest day, courtesy of his connection to the forge) wisely chooses the last minute to place the blessing on all present. It lasts a little over four hours a person. By the time the protection ends, the sudden heat does act as a shock, but is more grossly uncomfortably than actually dangerous.

In the meantime, from her magical palanquin, Vona is a font of knowledge about the tribes ... both from past experience and her own surreptitious questioning at Mona and Buruouac. After that, Rabbi Cohen, Skald, and Tom can mention what they know specifically of Tanaroa, because much to Vona's scientific jealousy, they spent a month there recovering.
    Spoiler
    Show
Although Farshore is on good terms with the Olmans of the surrounding seven villages, the Olmans have been wary about using their own to aid in the defense of this new colony. The villagers of Tanaroa in particular have been hesitant about supplying such aid, and since the other six villages look to the Tanaroans for leadership, the other villages have been falling in line. If the village of Tanaroa can be convinced to come to Farshore's aid, the other six villages will do so as well. (As you have seen from the two villages you have visited.)

Tanaroa is located at the southern end of the narrow isthmus that connects the southern peninsula to the mainland of the Isle of Dread. Preventing the passage of the terrible beasts of the mainland into this sheltered peninsula is the Great Wall, a fifty-foot-high barricade that stretches over two miles. Built during the height of the Olrnan empire over 1,000 years ago, the Great Wall's original purpose is long forgotten. Today, it serves as an important barrier, protecting the seven villages from the monsters that dwell to the north.

Tanaroa's proximity to the Great Wall is the primary reason it is the most important of the seven villages. They share a similar layout -- four groups of huts set at four equidistant points delineate the compounds of four clans and surround a central pyramid that serves as a temple and town square. Currently, the four clans are the Ape, Tiger, Boar, and Sea Turtle clans. Members of a clan hold that these animals represent their inner selves, which has led to specialization between the clans. The people of the Boar clan are the builders and craftsmen, the Ape clan are farmers and entertainers, the Tiger clan are the hunters and gatherers, and the Sea Turtle Clan are the fishermen and sailors.

Although each village clan has a male leader, command of each village falls to a female chieftain. The only other official of importance is the village's Zombie Master (or Mistress) -- an advisor to the chief and the religious leader of the village. The animation of zombies is an important part of Olman culture, who view the creation of "walking ancestors" as a necessary evil to protect their underground catacombs.
NOTE: Rabbi Cohen would stress that while he finds it distasteful in the extreme, not only are these zombies treated as revered ancestor-guardians, but neither the Zombie Master nor the zombies seem to register as evil on any scale, even though it is still negative energy that powers the zombies. He theorizes that the Zombie Masters are in fact some manner of "white necromancer" not known in the civilized lands. To that end, there will be no zombie-smashing, zombie-tipping, or other disrespect to the clans, their culture, or religion.

Tanaroa is a full-sized village supported by some amount of magic among their number, more on average than Farshore. The town in general, and most of its people, seem to not just live in harmony with the land (to the limit of normal agriculture, of course), but with themselves and are actually a more virtuous people than you will find in most human lands. Rabbi Cohen notes that there seem to be somewhere around 400+ souls in and around Tanaroa - all human. The authority figure in Tanaroa is J'kal, the chieftain, a talented hunter. He is supported by Mvembi, the zombie master.

In the late afternoon, early evening, as the party is arriving in Tanaroa, the PCs find the village in the middle of a religious ceremony. A pulsating rhythym pounded out on hollowed logs accompanies a frenzied dance by dozens of warriors wearing large masks depicting a monstrous bat. All the while, the villagers chant to a charred bat totem at the center of a huge flaming pyre erected at the foot of the central pyramid. The word they chant is the same one, over and over:"Zotzilaha."
    Spoiler: Rabbi Cohen, Vona (only)
    Show
Zotzilaha is the Olman god of bats and horrible things that fly in the night. He also holds influence over the Olman underworld, and is associated with diseases and plagues.

Zotzilaha is a regional name for the deity; he is known in other Olman settlements (outside the seven villages, not just outside Tanaroa) by the name Camazotz. Locally, Zotzilaha has increasingly taken on the fire aspect of another Olman god called Huehueteotl.
    Spoiler: Rabbi Cohen (only)
    Show
Zotzilaha is part man, part bat; and can manifest on the Material Plane when displeased. Only holy weapons may cause his aspect lasting harm, though nobody has ever dared try. His mere gaze strikes fear in enemies.

The entire village of Tanaroa is at the ritual, and as the PCs approach, the villagers pay them little attention. Before the PCs can make their presence fully known or reach any of the village's leaders, the effigy flashes with a sudden blast of brilliance. A cascade of sparks and flame from the burning pyre elicits startled screams from the villagers. A shape becomes momentarily visible in the fire as the effigy itself comes to life. A lean humanoid figure covered in short black fur rises from the flames, its head that of a snarling bat with glowing red eyes. Large membranous wings from its back beat against the flames like a bellows, sending hot cinders swirling. The creature shrieks out a short phrase in Olman...
Spoiler: Hoggie, Rabbi Cohen, Vona, Rusty
    Show
"Zotzilaha hears your sniveling prayers! You would appease the Great Bat? Then return what has been stolen or burn!"

    Spoiler: Rabbi Cohen
    Show
Eliezer, you know instantly that this must be the Bat Idol that you found in the city of Tamoachan and have absently carried all this time.

The batlike humanoid form bursts into flame, sending a flight of bats with wings of fire spiraling into the air above the effigy. At the same moment, a tremor rumbles through the ground and in the distance to the northwest, the two great volcanoes known as the Fangs of Zotzilaha flash with fresh plumes of fire and smoke. The eruption itself is minor, one of many the active volcanoes constantly emit, yet its timing is enough to send the village in to a blind panic.

Rabbi Cohen and Vona, you have no doubt that you have just witnessed a visitation from Zotzilaha (see above). The fire bats that emerged from the fire are his minions and quickly set to spreading word of his displeasure by attacking the villagers. There seem to be seven fire bats in all; the villagers do little but run from the creatures.
    Spoiler: Setup
    Show
There will be no map for this battle. Each bat is Small. The general range to them (and they are spread out in the village and among the villagers) is 100' to the closest one. They are spread out enough that no AoE will get more than one.

As things close and the PCs commit, positioning might be more of a factor, but for the most part this battle is chaos, theater of the mind, and not something easily mapped out (at least at the beginning). I am going into initiative to see how you choose to proceed, and at this time the fire bats aren't paying attention to the distant PCs at all.

    Begin Round One ...

Emphasis mine. I have this posted as ALCON, because it is a tiring thing. You don't mutter when you cast a spell with verbal components. You don't do a few sly movements when you use somatic components. Please stop making posts where you say you cast magic like that. I am not saying that you have to use the full and (admittedly silly) verbiage as I did above. Just STAHP with the misleading sense that spellcasting with V or S components is EVER anything less notable than what it is. The only people who get to cast spells like that have abilities clearly delineated as such. For example, Rabbi Cohen's many SLAs or pretty much any spell Hoggie casts.

Again, if you use actual V or S components, your post should never include your description of spellcasting as whispering, softly chanting, muttering, murmuring, or making a few minor hand gestures, barely noticeable shapes with your fingers, or some sort of disguised motion. Spellcasting is very dramatic and very noticeable.

R1T23: Vona, a curious thing, and one you didn't really notice ... until it was gone. In fact, this goes for Hoggie (and Rusty) and Corrin as well. Shortly after leaving Farshore, you have enjoyed a richness of sensation whenever you have been near the rest of the group. The colors are more intense, shapes are more defined, smells are clearer, tastes are more distinct, sounds clearer, and senses of thermal variation, kinesthetics, balance, and more have been sharpened. It seems as if leaving the confines of Farshore has awakened something primal in you that you don't recognize. Even your reflexes seemed enhanced. But again, it is something that is easy to overlook until it suddenly stopped just now. Now ... Vona, Hoggie, Corrin ... it is as if you lost a small piece of your connection to the world. It is not a fantastic difference, and yet the world is just a touch duller than it had been.

Vona, you are currently on Hoggie's floating disc, approximately 100' from the nearest fire bat. What do you do?

Vona hadn't had the best day. Hoggie (or 'Creepy Lyric Guy' as she referred to him internally) had summoned a disc of force, but he didn't actually do anything for it to appear. It just appeared, as if someone else had created it. It was puzzling, but she decided the tactical benefits of not slowing everyone else down was worth having to sit next to the weirdo. Still, things had been going well enough ignoring that until this attack. She could hop down and run, but she would almost certainly not get far enough to do anything before they struck again. She instead nudged the 'driver' of this strange coach. "Hey, bring us closer!", she said as she began to charge her F.I.S.T., "I can't get a good shot from this distance!"

With a burst of speed, Hoggie dashes after a flaming bat with the floating disk zipping along behind him. Vona whose quick mind managed to get the gist that she should hold on, does exactly that (spending a MA to do so, and dropping her out of delay) and just manages to grip the sides of the disk as Crazy Lyrics Guy covers 60' in half the time it would normally take a man to do so!

Vona, you were forced to take a MA to stay "in the saddle" of this crazy, careening, down-turned half-bubble. You are now 40' from the nearest fiery bat, yet the world is moving a hair slower than expected around you (you are hasted). These creatures, for lack of a better term, can be called "fire bats" or anything else you wish. There is nothing you've ever read about them, but looking at them now that you're closer you can make some hypotheses.

First, you are pretty sure that these are not fire-bats, so much as "bat-shaped fire." You are pretty sure looking at their movements that there is nothing truly animal about them, and all supernatural fire. You have no idea how much solid mass there is, and how much is fire. But if they are elementals (and you're pretty sure they are as you adjust your eyes of the oracle), you can bet on some commonalities that these Small-sized faux bats have with Large-sized elementals ...

    • Immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.
    • Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack.
    • Elementals do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

In addition, being an elemental they have an obvious elemental type: fire. This means that they are likely immune to fire ... and with a pesky vulnerability to cold.

Of course, elemental is a subtype itself, and these creatures are from the Inner Plane of Fire ... meaning they are outsiders.

If they are intelligent (not likely that intelligent), they might prove surprisingly skillful. But you can bet that each of them will be tougher, more combat-ready, and able to deal with a variety of non-traditional threats in a way that normal bats obviously couldn't.

See what I put in spoilers for Vona above about what you can figure about these creatures.

R1T19: The fire bat Vona hit (#1) flies forward five feet to attack Eliezer and bites him in the lower abdomen, but can't seem to hurt him or burn him.

R1T15: FB2 charges the giant eagle with what should've been a crit, but can't grab ahold. The fire bat screeches something in a hissing language.

R1T14: Rusty, it turns out, was thrown out of the disk. Rusty, as it turns out, has no desire to close to close on a battle with flaming, flying creatures. Rusty, in lieu of any other orders, begins cleaning himself.

R1T13: Another flying bat (FB3) charges Vona from the starboard quarter and slightly above. Without a weapon out, Hoggie did not get an AOO. Still, the fire bat misses.

R1T12: Corrin, you are 100' from the main line of bats, but you are only 60' from a fire bat that attacked Vona. You are hasted. What do you do?

R1T12: Corrin dashes to the nearest cover (40' away) while drawing holding forth his staff, once there, Corrin performs his arcane gestures before slashing with his staff in the direction of FB2 causing a blade of magical force to shoot towards it, hitting it for 28.

R1T12-11: Two more fire bats fly forth. One charges Hoggie and bites him low in the left knee for 4 + 4 fire. It automatically attaches to Hoggie's knee and he suddenly stops in pain (and effectively grappled). Hoggie instinctively does what he needs to do to not catch on fire. Another fire bat charges Corrin but the halfling and his cover easily avoids the creature.

R1T10: Skald, there are a whole lot of fire bats in play, spread around all over the field. From where you are standing, the closest one is attacking Corrin, 40' away. 20' from them further down field you have a fire bat each on Hoggie and Vona, and one of them seems attached to Hoggie. You have no idea what these things are, but you do what they are not ... they are not natural animals. You are currently hasted. If you want to start shooting, remember your low ammunition and the spell abundant ammunition (a standard thing for Skald). What do you do?

You need to review action economy: what you can do in a round. The movement was a move action. The spell was a standard action. Making more than one attack is a full-attack action. Please review this section of Combat.

R1T7-6: Two fire bats charge towards the back line. The first one hits Skald in the head. It doesn't do any physical damage, but inflicts 5 fire. The second one charges Tom and hits hard against him, but not enough to get past his tough hide.

R2T24: The illusion had not been as effective as hoped for, what with some of the very angry evidence now staring Tom in the face. He releases his concentration, steps back and blasts the bat with a jet of blistering cold. The small, fiery bat is as nimble as expected, and yet still takes 8 mod cold.

R2T21: Hoggie looks down at the fiery creature attacking his knee and his smoldering armor. Alarm flickers briefly across his features before a look of concentration takes its place. It causes his brows to crease as he focuses his mental powers.
“I says, "hey, you, get off of my cloud

Just then, Hoggie's form melts into a Hog-mist, which then floats away slightly to the side of the fire-bat so as not to provide cover (or, as a cloud, concealment) against anything Vona might send at it. Of course, the only problem - which doesn't foul a shot (if she doesn't shoot at her own anyway), is that the disc also moves 5' to the side - and she did not make a decisive tactical sidestep herself (nor does she gain the advantage of the same). So, FB3 and FB4 both get an AOO against her (and both miss terribly).

R2T20.5: Vona, it was great for long-distance travel, but being on the disc might just be more of a liability in combat (as you are finding out, luckily without having been hit). What do you do? You now have two fiery bats on you (unless the one on Hoggie goes back to attacking him).

Eliezer on deck (facing off against a fire bat), Eliezer's fire bat in the hole ...

R2T20.5: Vona leaps off the disc while the going is good - moving to a point just out of reach of both fire bats - and shoots at one of her pursuers (the one that had originally charged her), hitting it for 17.

R2T20: Eliezer holds his air (holds his ground?) and using Hoggie's psychic power swings at the fire bat to batter it into submission. The first strike does 24, the next bounces off of its hide, and the third destroys the fire bat as it screeches and disappears into flame.

R2T15: The fire bat that Vona had whalloped before (that ended up attacking the giant eagle illusion) charges Eliezer but the angel-dwarf blocks its bite - and its forward advance - cold.
