Default Outside 49: I don’t remember what it looks like either

This place is just as it sounds. It's Outside!
Want a change of scenery? Go Outside.
Always wanted to visit the beach? Come Outside.
Looking to have a climatic fight on clifftops? Attempt Outside.
Secret meetings being held where there's no cameras? Try Outside.
Want an ambush without nasty base defenses? Yep! Outside.

Any and all are welcome in the wild expanses beyond the reach of civilization. Who's going to keep you out? That's right, no one. You're already out!
Here lie vast expanses, dense forests, towering mountains, dizzying canyons, treacherous dungeons, encroaching jungles, roaring waterfalls, endless wastes, blistering deserts, mossy cliffs, illusionary oases, eldritch moors, flowering bosques, infested hills, cyclopean ruins, weed-tangled gardens, crumbling glaciers, peaceful glades, bubbling tar pits, rumbling volcanoes, teetering hoodoos, honeycombed caverns, dripping grottos, inland seas, grassy knolls, overgrown battlefields, creepy boneyards, guano-covered caves, and so much more!
The sky is truly the limit, and sometimes not even that. If you can imagine it, it's here, and something super cool is probably happening there.

And most importantly, enjoy Outside. That's what this is all about.

    Rules and Guidelines
    Spoiler
    Show
There is very little you can't do Outside. However, like always, please follow the forum rules and general rules of conduct. Respect that a scene may be private or that a plot shouldn't be interrupted. When in doubt, ask someone involved in the OoC thread or by PM.

There are many areas Outside, and people can be in multiple places outside. In order to keep areas Outside separated so there's no confusion, consider bolding your outside location at the start of each of your posts, like so:
    [An Epic Cliffside Battle]

The creepy eyed squirrel looks on at the raging battle with contempt! Contempt that only a squirrel with particularly creepy eyes can muster.
    [The Beach!]

The menacing craps are not only menacing today, but frustrated. Their every attempt to menace the non-existent duck has met with failure. Some might ask why the crabs are trying to menace nothing, but those people would get viciously pinched.
Note the creepy eyed squirrel and the menacing crabs do not interact because they are in different areas Outside. They could interact, if the squirrel moved to the beach. Of course, various things like telepathy help bypass this.

"Oh! There is someone else in there!" Spilaio says, looking closely at Nim's head. She doesn't seem too worried by that fact. "No, I can't travel with the water, not unless you bring the whole pool. But there must be some way I can leave, even temporarily."

"I don't know either. But you're a scholar, right? Maybe it's written in a book somewhere?" Spilaio doesn't seem to expect swift results, she just hopes it will happen someday. "How is the portrait coming along?"

    Secret Silo

There! The wire Asher is looking for. It can be swiftly cut, but it sounds like whoever is coming is about to enter through the door. He'd better act fast to avoid being caught in the act of sabotage.

Nim flips over the notebook and holds up his light. It’s definitely a very detailed and accurate sketch for such a short period of time. It even manages to look flattering. But that’s not very hard given his subject.

Asher decides to cut the wire first and deal with whoever walks through the door later. After a quick check to be sure, he breaks the connection, then readies his blade to smite whoever walks through.

In comes another of those giant robot ants, squeezing through the doorway with a pair of clawed limbs extended. It rushes at Asher as soon as it sees him, beginning to deploy additional weapons from compartments in its carapace.

"That's why I was hoping that there might be another passage in your cave or the stairs that I missed. I would very much like to find another part of this temple with an exit that doesn't involve passing the sphinx again." Sadly he can't turn invisible. Spilaio gestures, and a section of stalactites move aside like a curtain, revealing a dark, sloping passageway beyond. "This will bring you to the back rooms of the temple, to the priests' ceremonial washroom, I think. You should be able to escape through a window, but please, don't leave me here." She seems sad to see Nim go.

The passage ends at another cavern pool. A shaft has been cut in the ceiling, leading into a dark room above. A rotting rope dangles down the shaft with a rusted bucket handle tied to it, but fortunately, stone ladder rungs are also carved into the shaft wall, slick with moisture, but probably much safer.

Well, that isn't much of a choice. Nim takes the cut ladder up, slick as it is. Maybe if he slips he can just fall into the pool. He doesn't have experience cliff-diving but he knows it's possible.

Up slick, mossy rungs to the opening above.
A small room, tiled with stone. Mold springs from the cracks in the floor and walls, fed by the moisture heavy in the air. A door, made from rotting wood, hangs loosely in the doorway on one hinge, and the worm-eaten remains of several buckets litter the floor. This is not a pleasant place to be, unless you're one of the rats whose tracks can be faintly seen on the floor.

The door opens into a narrow hallway, lined with other doors, none in great shape. Perhaps living quarters? On each end of the hallway is a fancier, more sturdy door, but if Nim has a good sense of his position, or even an okay one, he'll realize one of those doors leads back to the room with the sphinx very quickly. The other one, however, might be safer.

Nim can't discount the plain doors, but the fancy ones seem like a good place to start. Especially since his glowstick is starting to dim.
He takes the safe door, but only through blind luck. He isn't thinking about if he's on the same level as the sphinx's lair. He listens to the door for sounds of giant monster, but opens it if he doesn't hear anything.

Behind the door is a formerly well-furnished apartment, now given over to decay. Mouldering bedsheets cover a half-collapsed bed, held up by an unseen object beneath it. A wardrobe whose doors are lying on the ground is filled with moth-eaten robes. The stub of a burnt-out candle rests on a small table, alongside a dried-up inkwell. Maybe Nim's eyes are drawn to the gold-inlaid staff, still in good shape, resting in one corner. Maybe he gets a glimpse of a small trunk pinned underneath the fallen bed. Or maybe there's something else he finds interesting.

Nim is of course pulled towards the staff first. Gold doesn't rot or rust, so that might be the only reason it's still in good shape. But it also could be magic! Either way it looks valuable. If there's nothing special about it he will also take a look at the trunk.

    Ruins of Hevar

The golden staff, is, of course, heavy. Although not as heavy as a solid gold staff would be. It's probably another material plated with gold. If Nim is attuned to such things, he might feel a stormy power within the staff, dormant, but there. The trunk, on the other hand, is wedged tightly beneath the broken bed. It will have to be freed somehow before it can be opened.
