Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
Besides, I feel that it's extremely unlikely that Jeph put any thought into this other than what he figured would draw a cheap laugh.

This is interesting. Roko is so tied to her body, talking about her inner workings can make her faint. Swordsmary has such a phobia about lasers, thinking of them makes HER want to pass out. I wonder why AIs have a "Faint" option.

Could be a safety switch: all AIs have a KO button, maybe it's five or six different ones, and the one who knows them all can take them all out in case of Skynet.

Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
Outside of a 'probably true, but uninteresting' answer that Jeph clearly wants robots to be as people-like as possible to make storytelling easier, I think it appears like robots in general take great pains to live as 'in the world of people' as possible. I mean, given that they could live on Mars, in the ocean, as a vehicle which can move a hundred miles an hour, think so fast they could live thousands or millions of lives in a day, etc. etc. etc., they clearly are choosing to live on our terms. With that in mind, treating your body as a body and not a vehicle chasis in which you ride around in or the like seems relatively reasonable.

It may also be an emergency shutdown to deal with stressful scenarios. Basically, anything that would make them short circuit. Similar to how they tend to pour steam when embarrassed far too much. Their cpu is overheating, time to vent.

I wonder if Bubbles asking if it was okay that she cut her hair is an intentional callback to Dora freaking out over Marten's haircut.

Ill admit, this latest one made me laugh out loud a little.
“Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

A pegasus is not just a dog with wings, Jeph.
It's a deformed dog with wings.

But hooves look differently than paws, and you can't comb a ponytail on a dog's tail. Knowledge of those biological details is what set great artists apart from merely good ones.
Unless you're not trying for a photorealistic look. Then I guess they truly are basicaly the same thing as most quadrupedal mammals.Yes, I am slightly egomaniac. Why didn't you ask?

Knowledge of these biological differences makes you an adequate vet.
Knowing when it's appropriate to utterly disregard them is what makes one a great artist. Or possibly a chef, which is just a special kind of artist.~ CAUTION: May Contain Weasels ~

Having seen concrete saws in action, I am amazingly impressed that Bubbles uses it with precision and effect.

This is Bubbles we're talking about. She probably uses the concrete saw to sharpen pencils.

Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
Frankly, if someone just handed me a dremel and an object and told me to smooth it out, I'd probably do just what Sam's doing. I'm not good at implied or assumed information. And blase about accidental self-harm.

I'm terrified of actual self-harm (I handle all tools at maximally extended arms length, often while turning my face halfway away), but I also don't know what a dremel is and only have a vague concept of vices, so yeah, I'd probably be in the same position.

Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
One would at least hope that you would put it on the floor and hold it down with your foot? Or to brace it against a table with one hand? Or to ask if you could have at least one glove?
For those who are not familiar, a Dremel is a brand of machine known as a Rotary Tool. It's a small drill, about the same shape and size as an electric toothbrush, and the tip can be replaced with a variety of different tools; drill bits, wire brushes, sandpaper-headed wheels, tiny little circular saws.... basically anything that turns like a drill.
They're pretty innocuous - there's no chance that the one Sam is using is powerful enough to spontaneously rip that joint out of her hand, for example, and she'd have to deliberately try to hurt herself in order to get more than a minor graze from it. But then, this is Sam we're talking about....~ CAUTION: May Contain Weasels ~

Well, if I knew gloves were an option, yeah, I'd be wearing them. But again, I'm only faintly aware of what vices are and I wouldn't know when you would or would not use one.

Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
I'd use a vice* to hold the piece being worked on, if for no other reason than so that I could use two hands for more control over the Dremel, and so that I could take breaks, make tool adjustments, etc, without having to set the piece down.
(* With some sort of protection between the vice jaws and the joint to prevent scratching, say a clean shop towel or microfiber thingy.)It is one thing to suspend your disbelief. It is another thing entirely to hang it by the neck until dead.

Re: Questionable Content 13: It's YOU Who Is The Dork!
You would either use a vice (or fix to a stable surface with a clamp) "whenever you're about to touch something with a live power tool", is pretty much the entirety of the rule.
So basically, "whenever you're using a power tool". Some people will argue that you don't always need to do that, but those people are either a) veteran professionals that are supremely confident in their skills to the point where they might not always need to use every safety feature, or b) idiots who think that they're veteran professionals that are supremely confident in etc, etc etc.
You're already 4 or 5 steps ahead of Sam then, to whom cause and effect are only linguistically related (if at all)
And similarly... I don't mean to make myself out as some kind of DIY guru or anything like that, because I'm not. I can rewire a plug or put up a set of curtains, and I know not to stick my hand down a seemingly broken garbage disposal chute, but I have enough scars to prove that I don't always get it right.~ CAUTION: May Contain Weasels ~
