    Luna is glad that her watch was boring and uneventful. Everyone's safety is her priority, and she'll gladly take boredom along with it. In the morning, she assents to the librarians' request. "Fine, you can stay here. Just make sure you have enough to eat and don't open the vault door for anyone that's not us or sent by us! The password we'll give them is umm...Sheep-Shead. Remember that."

    As they get ready to leave, Lunalesca goes over the half-burnt note. "Hmm...Nyserian manor isn't too far away here I think. We might check it out on our way to the Heart. Hey Horgus, you know anything about this Nyserian fella? Had any business dealings with him? Apparently his place is a Templar safehouse."

    Hesper sleeps lightly. In the morning, she considers Aravashnial's words and says, "I'd think this place would be an obvious target if the demons noticed it was somehow still intact, but then, traveling with us makes our group a bigger target, too. We'll contact you when we find somewhere more unambiguously safe." Her words and manner don't acknowledge the possibility that there is nowhere like that anywhere nearby.

    "I'm coming with you and I'm not leaving my money with these grubby librarians. Good work though they might do" Horgus says to Diamond as he packs more of his things. "Don't expect me to fight though."

    "As for the Nyserian manor, I'm no close friend of Kandro Nyserian. He loaned a lot of gold from me not too long ago..." he says. "Never learned what it was for."
    He clearly doesn't want to dwell on thoughts of what that money might have been spent on.

    You set off towards Nyserian manor. And arrive to find a crater. A trench, not unlike the one you fought across a day earlier, has carved the manor into nothing. A few exposed basement rooms have also been crushed into nothing.

    Those basement rooms might have been for hosting the Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth, but their service has come to an end.

    The group spends a while searching the Nyserian Manor. It does appear that there were no casualties there. Afterwards, the group heads off North, towards the Defender's Heart.

    Through the broken streets you travel, accompanied by the smell of smoke and occasional distant screams. As you cross a street, the group can hear scrabbling sounds nearby.
    "What was that?" Anevia asks, turning her head.
    "I don't know" Horgus says, heading to the center of the group.

    There is another scrabbling sound, and then a terrifying howl that shakes everyone hearing it, and a large, quill-coated hound leaps from one of the ruins. It lands within 20 feet of the group.

    The monster snaps and howls as it is subjected to a barrage of attacks. Ranged blast from Skerak and arrows from Anevia and Hesper strike the beast. Diamond, already caught in combat with the Howler throws a sudden punch, which causes the beast's quills to bristle, leaving one lodged in his arm. Shauna, armed with the glowing Radiance, lands a strike on the beast, taking a quill herself.

    The weight of attacks brings down the monster, leaving it dead. There as the odd metallic glint on it's side, but in its death throes, the quills squirm, starting to droop slowly as life bleeds out of the monster.

    Luna offers healing to Diamond, curing the bite wound suffered by the dwarf.

    (Failing Ref save leaves a foot-long quill lodged in them, causing intense pain and requiring a Heal check (DC 15) to remove. Failing the check deals 1d4+1 damage
    (1d8+3)[10] Cure Light Wounds from Luna to Diamond.

    To retrieve the object, you need a DC 10 Reflex save, or you suffer a quill for 1d4+1 damage (and need a DC 14 Ref check or have a quill lodged.

    The embedded object is a silversheen dagger of exquisite quality. It is in the shape of a holy symbol of Iomedae, shaped like a little sword.

    "Nice work" Anevia says, limping closer. "Let's sort ourselves out and move along. That howl might bring something here if we linger."

    The dagger is masterwork quality, works against DR/silver and functions as a holy symbol of Iomedae for spellcasting. Appraise to evaluate the worth.

    You'll need to roll heal checks to remove the barbs, or elect to take 10. You may also pull them out by force, but this deals 7 damage. While the combat was over, I didn't bring it up, but the quills leave their victim sickened until removed. Those things are vicious
