So apparently we get another 40 min EQG special. I'm not going to complain. The groundhog day plot was done passably well, and I liked that in this interpretation it wasn't a simple "learning the lesson breaks the cycle" solution. Some good Rarity snark, and it's nice to see someone in the time loop successfully trying to prove it to others. Actually thinking about how to carry progress to the next iteration is an underestimated tactic. A little disappointed in the Dazzlings appearance. Overall an alright special I thought.

I are back.

Short impressions: Bognor Regis is extremely banal, Portsmouth is much better, Mary Rose is fascinating, Brighton Pavileon is a bit too detail-busy for my tastes and Portchester Castle's keep is way too damn high.

(I could not, in fact, get to the top. Heights - and yes, it's ridiculous, I know, hush - bother me (it's actually the falling more than the impact) and the wooden stairs over open space would have been a bit off-putting alone, but the creaking wood ship noises they'd put in because one of the displays was a ship-doofer just was too much - I simply couildn't make myself go up any higher. (I just about coped with the Mary Rose because it was a solid platform, but I still had vertigo...) Must be gettin' old...)

I'm getting the impression there is a special, but no new episode out today, yes?

MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust. The show's writing and production engendered a large fanbase outside of the intended target audience.

This long-running thread is not only a place to discuss MLP, both official releases and the vast array of fanworks, but has become a mini-community in and of itself.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

A good starting point is to watch the episodes in order. The show is available on Netflixs in many countries, but, at a pinch, can usually be found with some searching one youtube or dailymotion. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily.

To me, the mid-season movie was essentially an hour and a half of cotton candy; sweet but utterly without substance. There wasn't anything really bad, the characterization was fine, the new characters weren't overly memorable but none of them were particularly grating either, and the exposition song was one of the better examples of that sort of thing I've run into. I think the biggest problem it had was a lack of meaningful conflict. The characters encountered a problem, did what came naturally to them and solved the problem. Twilight was the only one who ran into any sort of false start, and by the time she had her letdown moment we could already see that the problem was being resolved anyway.

I'd give it a B- overall. In the end it was an enjoyable bit of fluff, but fluff is all it was.

Hmm.

Yeah. That was... an adequate thing I watched.

I don't like the movie animation, I've decideded. It just feels... Uncanny valley. Just... off. And, I don't think, as expressive as the regular show (how have, to be fair, had nearly a decade to get it down). It might be a higher quality animation, but it's also just not nearly as good.

The plot was... Basically no stakes and painfuly obvious from the get-go. It was just... There.

Exposition song was painful and would have been better not being a song.

Overall, I did very much feel you could tell it wasn't the regualr show staff behind this one.

One thing I did unqualified like was Kafuffle's design, since it took me a large chunk into her scene with Rarity to even notice she has a prostethic leg (pretty cool-looking one, too), and they made zero deal about it.

Okay, so there is also a new EqG special and there has been a Dazzlings music video (about TIME we saw more of them!) and this is apparently a teaser for them coming in a special at some point.

Ye gods, EqG is such a mish-mash of stuff, it's so damn hard to keep track of...

*cough* Ah, yes, apparently a sooner special than I expected, actually...! I'm... not sure I should spoiler the previous sentence above or not, since having heard about said upcoming appearence, it STILL took me by surprise when the Dazzlings showed up... Score one for EqG's chaotic sheduleing, I guess...

Yes, now, THAT was more like it! I thought that was excellent. Sunset's Groundhog day, in style. Plus Pinkie. (Oh, the shipping fodder! The shipping fodder! Seriously, though, I think Sunset and Pinkie is much more fun that Sunset/Twilight (either or...))

And, as aforementioned, Dazzlings being Dazzlings. I'm so happy to see them, I'm not even disappointed they were more or less a cameo for red herring purposes.

Yeah, that blew Rainbow Roadtrip right out of the water. That was just... Smile at at best, whereas as this had stakes, a non-obvious plot and was actually laugh-out loud funny.

Pleasantville.

This color premise reminds me a bit of Pleasantville.

It was an alright little special. No real stakes, but there's a good bit of interesting pony designs going on (Kerfuffle is a cutie. Goggles, scarves, and top hats from a mare with a mechanical leg? She'd totally work in a steampunk setting) thanks to them going with the "Movie" style animation. I honestly do like it more than the TV show. It just feels much more fluid in animation.

The manehattanites were a rather neat couple. They argue, they agree, they go back and forth. Not bad to show organic couples who have both good and bad days. ...in one day, but still. XD

Prisoner's Theatre, in the first floor of the keep. Portchester Castle being used as a prison for French soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars they put on plays for entertainment (as well as doing all sorts of other stuff, like making stuff and generally keeping their morale up and such).

Rarity and Trixie both approved, as posh Prench prisoners showing some culture in the former and general stage approval in the latter (though she, of course, would have done a better job...)

She's no Bill Murray, but I was sufficiently amused by this special's version of the Groundhog's Day loop. I finally see what all the hate was about with the Dazzlings having been given the short end of the stick. I guess yeah, after al this time it would have been neat to have another story about them, but I think they did alright serving as the red herring. Seems they are getting by. Heh, well if anything, it could serve as the setup for their own story. Maybe they can get a redemption movie. Maybe they can learn not to leave toast in the toaster. Nice tour bus.

Anyway, On the other hoof I feel like the lesson is a bit unfairly one-sided against Sunset here. Pinkie is often times just a really bad friend. Like, sure Sunset should share the time with Pinkie, but friendship is a two-way street, you know? Pinkie needs to calm her sprinkles and resist running off at EVERY. LITTLE. MOMENT. I mean, I couldn't really feel sorry for her getting ditched on the second loop. >.>

Overall a fun special. I'd give it a B+.

The mother only speaks Spanish.

My mom seriously looked at me and asked if I could translate becuase... I took four semesters of C average Spanish like, four years ago.

I had to google how to say I haven't spoken Spanish in like four years in case I end up having to make conversation.

(And then I had to correct her becuase he plan B was a translator app on her phone and the app gave her estar when it should have given her ser.)

Back from Barrage, at Stafford. First time we've been to that one. Nice show, and a different set of folk, since the catchment area is a bit different. (Trouble with Hammerhead, Partizan and Other Partizan is that rhey are all located at the same venue. Which is a good venue, but it is a lot of the same folk turning up, us included!)

Actually had more interest in both the starships and AccAtt itself than I've had for AGES. Naturally, the one time I forgot to put in my favourite show-off fleet (the SSA...!)

Depressingly, it's the first game we've had since Partizan (my mate or I have been unable to make a thursday at the moment; on the plus side though, better for him to make the Monday when we roleplay, which he has been doing.) Scenario was a bit basic, pretty much the same set-up as last game, except this bit was occurring simultaneously with the other game.

XYGRITT BRIEF

Our probing attack against the Xyriats failed disastrously. Not only was it repelled, Thulagos destroyer Galla was captured, after it treacherously surrendered. The final transmissions indicate that the males instigated a mutiny.
[Admiral] Norroll did not consider this a risk, as it was her daughter, [Captain] Norroll who was in charge and she believed the captain would have destroyed all data before capture. Despite objections from the other staff, [Admiral] Norroll ordered the main attack to continue.

The [admiral] apparently greatly underestimated the treachery of the males, and the Xyriats ambushed the task force with a precision spacial disruptor attack, allowing the ships in the vanguard to pass and then interdicting our main fleet under the [admiral’s] command. This would not have been possible without direct access to our battle-plans – which [Captain] Norroll would have had access too. (In technical breech of operational protocol.) We have ourselves attacked by a Xyriat attack force. We are on our own until our vanguard returns.

[Admiral] Norroll is conducting her fleet section to attack the Xyriat special disruptor section. Your section is to screen her forces from the Xyriats carrier section, which would otherwise pose a serious threat to her rear.

The Xyriats lost both the deployment and inative roll-off (typical...), so after an inconclusive first bound, I realised thgat I was going to have to suck it up and get in close, rather than try stalling out another round so I could close when I had initiative.

It cost me quite dear, losing my Superdreadnought and a few other ships. In return, I was only able to kill the Xygritt's Dreadnought (which is the same size and almost equivilent of the Xyriats superdeadnought) - mostly thanks to the efforts of my fighters!

We had time for one more bound. I basically tried to get out of dodge as much as possible, while moving to attack the Xygritt's superdreadnought (which is HF 200 as opposed to HF 149).

I managed to JUST take it out, thanks to my fighters (though if I hadn't, there was likely going to be a boarding action as my troop ships prepared to board it...!

It cost me another couple of ships, but in terms of points, I came out about 300 points ahead in losses (out of a 10k point fleet - he lost about 2.8k).

But, most importantly...

CUTIE MARK CRUSADER SHIP STEALERS YAAAAAAAY!

Yes, the Xyriats are three for three in every time they have foughtthe Xygritts, they have run off with another ship to liberate the poor males! Beating the Matriarchy stealing one ship at a time!

Random thought / headcannon time;

Based on what we saw in episode 13, it would seem as though Luna is somewhat similar to Twilight personality-wise (more sedate interests, fascinated by bureaucratic process, etc.). At the same time, during the episode we saw that one of the points of friction between the two sisters was the fact that Celestia was prone to assuming that Luna would follow along with whatever she wanted, like Twilight undoubtedly would have had she been the one traveling with Celestia. Based on that, I have to wonder if Celestia came to view Twilight as a sort of surrogate Luna during her time as Celestia's student, and then Celestia unconsciously transposed some of Twilight's personality quirks onto Luna when she returned.

Makes sense. Celestia seems to project a lot of her view of Luna onto Twilight as well.

I'm not - EVA was mostly a good series 'till the last few episodes (although I grant you I didn't care much for the films). It was one of the first series I watched back in the day. I suspect it hasn't aged well, though.

(Let's see: Sailor Moon, Rei, two I don't recognise and Ranma. Sometimes MLP is really good with its little shout-outs.)

That put me off enough the closest I've come since is SFDebris' reviews of the movies. (I do not feel I have missed anything.) The series started off well and degenerated into utter crap. I'd have been even more furious if I hadn't become aware is was rterrible and had some level of bracing. Nevertheless, I came away from it wishing that I could have that time back. It compared ESPECIALLY badly, juxtaposed as it was aired simutaneously and right next to Martian Sucessor Nadesico (it was either before or after, I forget) which remains one of my favourites; a series which was better done in pretty much every single respect, in my opinion.

And on this we agree. Nadesico was great fun (the first couple of episodes were a little wonky, but after that they really hit their stride). The movie was a bit of a clash of styles, but while it wasn't as good as the series it was entertaining enough.

Not been an issue at any of the Cons I've been to (admittedly a limited number). Perhaps the best solution is to bring it so it's there if needed.
