    Default Junkyard Wars XX: XE + PBA(a) - S

Welcome to Junkyard Stadium! It is in this hallowed pile of miscellaneous parts that we will hold a competition of Practical Optimization with three components. The catch? Competitors may not use the third item in their builds!

Goal: Create a build that showcases the selected ingredients while steering clear of the Forbidden Ingredient.

This competition has two Necessary Components and one Forbidden Component. This round's components are...

    • Necessary: Xorvintaal Exarch template (from Monster Manual V p.47)
    • Necessary: The Pact-Bound Adept PrC (Adapted, see post #2 below)(from Dragon Magic p.46)
    • Forbidden: Sorcerer base class

    Contestants:

    The rules are as follows:
    • Creation: 32 point-buy is the presumed creation method. You may assume that you will have enough exp to reach ECL 20, and that the occasional bit of crafting, use of spells with exp components, or the like won't prevent you from doing so. However, LA buyoff is an alternate rule which is not in play.
    • Workshop: Competitors will be free to use any official 3.5 rulebook in constructing their builds. Dragon Magazine is disallowed, and Unearthed Arcana is allowed; but see below. Web-exclusive 3.0 or 3.5 materials by WotC are expressly allowed, but take care to verify that an updated version did not appear in print elsewhere as this may cause an Elegance deduction at the judges' discretion. If you use web material, please link it. Dragon Magazine Compendium is allowed, as are Oriental Adventures and the Dragonlance Campaign Setting. Alternate rule systems from UA such as gestalt and fractional saves are not allowed, as they create a different playing field.
    • Speculation: Please don't post or speculate on possible builds until after the reveal in order to avoid spoiling the surprise if a particular competitor is producing a build along those lines.
    • Disputes: Any scoring disputes should be sent to the Chair via PM. Valid disputes include RAW misreadings, arithmetic errors, things missed that are present in the entry, and inconsistently applied criteria. Invalid disputes include disagreements on matters of opinion, a judge not catching something not explicitly presented in the entry, and the like. Invalid disputes will be responded to via PM by the Chair, but valid disputes will be posted in-thread for the judge to review. When disputing, please indicate the judge the dispute is intended for and provide a quote of the disputed comment or comments. Note: the Chair may edit or paraphrase any disputes in presenting them to the judges.
    • Leadership is banned: We're creating one thing, not all of the things. If your entry includes a prestige class or ACF that grants Leadership or a Leadership-like ability as a bonus feat, the feat should be ignored and is not eligible to be traded away for another feat or ACF through any means.
    • Presentation: You will need to present a write-up of your build at at least one of the following points: 5th level, 10th level, 15th, 20th, and a "sweet spot" that you feel is the high point of the build, as well as presenting a fully-fleshed out 20-level build in the table below. Please give a rundown of the build's abilities and playability throughout its life. Builds will be posted anonymously, in order to avoid the potential of bias towards a particular competitor. For this reason, please don't put your name in the build as I'm likely to miss it when reviewing the entries. Also for this reason, PLEASE do not include any material that may or may not offend any potential viewers/judges/competitors OR break forum rules. Any builds which violate forum rules WILL be withheld from posting.

Due to concerns about standardizing entry format, please use the following table for their entry.

For other systems (Psionics, ToB, Incarnum, etc.) keep track of PP/maneuvers/essentia separately, preferably in a nice neat list.

    Judges:

    • Scoring: Each judge is required to provide the criteria by which they are judging the builds. By "criteria," we mean a simple explanation of what the judge is looking for in each of the below categories and what kind of scoring we can expect. If a judge deems a build to be illegal, they may provide a 0 in Elegance but may not refuse to judge any build presented by the Chairman.
    • The Categories: Judging will be based on the following criteria, with each build rated from 1 (very poor) to 5 (exemplary) in each area: Originality, Power, Elegance, Use of Components.

      • Originality: Is the build unique? Does it deviate from the obvious? Does it forge its own path, or does it fall back on common, established optimization tricks? Some judges score entries for the quality of their concept & backstory as well, though not all do. Providing at least some backstory is heavily encouraged, as it helps the judges figure out who the entry is. Note that the purpose of this category is not to penalize entries that independently came up with the same idea as another entry, but rather to reward entries that explore underutilized and non-obvious areas of optimization, so, judges, try not to base your judging in this category too heavily on what other builds are doing. Multiple entries using the same element may certainly be evidence that the element is unoriginal, but you shouldn't impose anything like a "-1 for each other build using the same class" penalty.
      • Power: Power level is up to you. Cheese is acceptable, but should be kept to a sane level unless you're showcasing a new TO build you've discovered. In the words of one of my predecessors, a little cheddar can be nice, but avoid the mature Gruyere unless you're making a cheese fondue.
      • Elegance: This category was formerly titled "Build Stability." Here, we're essentially measuring how skillfully you put your build together and how you balanced flavor with power. We're cooking here - if your dish doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter how well-presented it is. Use of flaws is an automatic loss of one point per flaw in this category. Other things that will cause lost points here are excessive multiclassing (meaning any multiclassing that results in an xp penalty), and classes that don't fit the concept - using Cloistered Cleric in a front-line melee fighter, for example, may lose you points. Rule adherence and legality of sources is scored under this category; additionally, reliance on a questionable, controversial, or ambiguous ruling can and should result in a deduction. Neither the number of sources nor their relative obscurity should be penalized--contestants should feel free to use any books they like. Dipping should not be penalized unless it results in a multiclass xp penalty; if the system won't penalize it, neither should judges.
      • Use of Components: Was the Forbidden Component avoided? Were the Necessary Components showcased, or simply used because they were necessary?
    • Disputes: Any scoring disputes will be posted by the Chairman in-thread after reviewing them privately. Valid disputes include
      • RAW misreadings,
      • arithmetic errors,
      • things missed that are present in the entry,
      • and inconsistently applied criteria.

      Invalid disputes include
      • disagreements on matters of opinion,
      • a judge not catching something not explicitly presented in the entry,
      • and the like.

Invalid disputes will be responded to via PM by the Chair, but valid disputes should be responded to by each individual judge. Judges are obligated to respond to disputes to ensure that everyone gets a fair shake. A judge's scores will only be recognized if they have recognized all disputes. In the absence of any other judges, the entries will be judged by the chairman.

    Completion Time:
    • Contestants will have until 20:59 PM CST Friday Sept. 28, 2018 to create their builds and PM them to the chairman.
    • Builds will then be posted simultaneously to avoid copying.
    • Judges will have until 20:59 PM CST Friday October 12, 2018 to judge the builds and submit their scores. Judging deadline is subject to extension as required.
    • As the precedent has been set from Episode 2, should all prospective judges have posted their rulings in a neat, timely fashion and all disputes have been settled satisfactorily (to either judges, contestants, or the Chairperson), the judging period may end prematurely to give way to a new episode. No reason to keep working on a finished building and avoid moving onto the next one.

Looking for as many contestants and judges as feel like playing! We will award 1st through 3rd places, as well as a shout-out for honorable mention. The honorable mention prize is given to the most daring or unexpected build that doesn't gain a medal. Contestants are invited to vote for honorable mention via PM. Everyone else can vote in-thread. Ready? Set? Get to the junkyard and start building!

    For this round:

We will be using a variant of Pact-Bound Adept based on its "Adaptation" section (on page 49 of Dragon Magic). Use the class as written with the following changes:
    • Under "Entry Requirements", the "Feats" entry changes to: "Dragontouched, Draconic Heritage"
    • Under "Entry Requirements", the "Spellcasting" entry changes to: "Must be able to spontaneously cast 3-level arcane spells.
    • Under "Entry Requirements", omit the "Special" line.
    • Under "Class Features" add at 1st level: "Pactmagic: At 1st level, a Pact-Bound Adept may use (her class level) + (her level in a spontaneous, arcane class) as (her sorcerer level) to qualify for entry into Dragonpacts. All other requirements must be met as normal.
    • Under "Class Features", change "Spellcasting" from "...in an arcane spellcasting class..." to "...in a spontaneous, arcane spellcasting class".

    Dragonpacts:

Pages 90-91 of Dragon Magic offers 11 Dragonpacts. Any can be chosen and doing so will beget no penalty from the judges.

Page 88 offers a small section on "Creating New Dragonpacts". There are guidelines available for making your own. Contestants in this competition will be allowed to create their own Dragonpact(s). Doing so, however, may incure penalties in judging should the judge(s) believe a contestant has strayed too far afield of the guidelines set forth in Dragon Magic. Should a contestant choose this route, s/he would be wise to err on the side of caution. Judges should take into consideration that such warning has been given.

If using a Dragonpact of your own creation, please offer the following as part of your entry: the connecting theme of the Dragonpact; a fully filled-out Dragonpact table (see below), even if your character isn't fulfilling the entire pact; and a sources list of the spells used.

    FAQ:

    • Can invocation classes still benefit from the modified spontaneous spellcasting class increase that the Pact Bound Adept now gives?

I'm going to go ahead and say sure. I went back and forth on this a few times. Invocation users don't really seem all that Pact-Bound Adept-y to me because they don't have spells slots to use for Dragonpacts. But they are arcane users whose SLA usage certainly mimics spontaneous casters as opposed to prepared casters. They still won't be able to qualify for entry into the class with just their invocations, of course. But in the interest of expanding possible options, I'll rule: for the purposes of this round of this competition, the +1 level advancements of the augmented Pact-Bound Adept may be applied to invocation classes.

Also, in the interest of expanding possible options, I will also rule against strict RAW and state: for the purposes of this round of this competition, the +1 level advancements of the augmented Pact-Bound Adept may be applied to mystery using classes. They, also, will not be able to qualify for the PrC on their own; but they do cast spells, do so "spontaneously", and have slots that could be offered up to a Dragonpact, so it seems to be a good idea to allow them to advance through PBA.

    • How does the Mindsight feat (Lords of Madness) interact with the 100 mile Telepathy?

You just had to ask, didn't you? Okay, let's get into this.
Minsight requires the Telepathy special quality. Xorvintaal Exarchs do gain a version of Telepathy. Of that much, we can be sure. It's listed under languages and not under Special Qualities. But that's MMV for ya. Oddly enough, Dragon's Favor (Su) isn't listed under a Special Qualities section, either. In fact, there is no "Special Qualities" section for the XE. Weird. It seems fairly certain though, that Telepathy should be a special quality and, therefore, would qualify for Mindsight.
Of note, the Xorvintaal Exarch's Telepathy is listed as working with it's Master Dragon (for lack of a better term) to 100 miles. The Master Dragon, however, only has Telepathy with it's Exarch to 10 miles. Welcome to the editing style of WoTC, folks.

      But wait, the questions continue.
      Mindsight includes the sentence
Quote Originally Posted by Lords of Madness p.126

      (Emphasis mine.)
According to the wizards' archive, dnd 3.5 does not define "range". Does it refer only to distance? Or does range also include the notion of scope? (Just what is the range of a particular bard's singing voice?)
      So:
Does a XE with Mindsight notice a goblin 50 feet away because the goblin is within range (re: distance) of the Telepathy ability?
Does a XE with Mindsight not notice the goblin because it isn't within range (re: scope) of the Telepathy?
Can the XE notice the goblin if said goblin is on the Astral plane? (Or the Plane of Shadow or some other coterminous plane of existence....)
What, if anything, does the XE notice if the goblin is creating an anti-magic field? Does s/he have a noticeable 'hole' in her/his Mindsight? Or does s/he just not recognize the existence of a mind in the area, just like all of the other areas within range that don't have minds in them?
How the unholy Hel does Mindsight actually work?!?

To answer any of these questions is to speculate on RAI. Which is, fortunately for me, not my job here. If I was a Judge, I know how I'd sit on the matter. But I'm not, I'm the Chair. If I was an innocent bystander asked my opinion on the matter, I know what counsel I'd offer. But I'm not, I'm the Chair.
So, in that capacity, I hereby make my official ruling: this matter will be left up to each individual judge to decide.

Now, with that settled, feel free to discuss how 100 mile Telepathy/Mindsight is affected by the "line of effect" rules.

I have volunteered to judge this round. I'm new to the optimization judging thing, so instead of trying to give thorough guidelines for each category, I'll tell you a bit about my personality at a D&D table and provide a bit more guidance on the judging of custom Dragonpacts.

In my ~15 years at the table, I've historically been the most rules-lawyer-y of my small groups, in a helpful way. I remember a lot of the 3.5 rules and know where to find them quickly (PHB/DMG page #'s) if I don't. Expect that if I have a points-dock, I'll probably cite the thing I'm pointing out. I generally play to make the rest of the party succeed from the player side.

I'm also the type of DM who will allow a party to do what it wants within reason, assuming it's both rules-supported and balanced. On the subject of custom Dragonpacts, try to keep anything you make balanced with the power level of others already published. This may grant a bonus in Originality or Power (depending on build), but if it's unbalanced, expect a penalty in Elegance. Expect a maximum score swing of +/-1 if you do an exceptional / terrible job with a custom Dragonpact. I want to encourage these without making them necessary to win the competition and also without killing builds over them.

Pay attention to the rules and guidelines already posted. As I'm not the best creative writer, expect backstory to not be a big factor in scores.

See the sidebar at the bottom of MM5 pg47: "...the dragon's ability to do so is limited by that dragon's success in the great game." So, basically, when your character successfully completes a mission, the dragon may restore you back up to five favor tokens, at its discretion. Assuming your character is successful, you should probably always have at least one favor token.

Note: MM5 pg43's Create Exarchs (Sp) says the ritual "gives 5 favor tokens" and references the sidebar on pg47. The sidebar on pg47 says "restore five favor tokens." For simplicity's sake, I hope we decide to go with a cap of 5 favor maximum. After all, if you ever use Dragon's Favor: Lair's Rebirth (Su), you spend all your favor (at least one) to not die, so there's not much reason to bank a lot of favor. The sidebar implies that favor is a limited resource for the patron dragon to dole out.

See Dragon's Favor (Su) before the ability listing. Use a number of favor tokens defined by the effect in question as an immediate action to gain an effect listed.

I noticed something that I am [REDACT]ing for fun's sake. Unless someone asks about it specifically, I'll leave it as an optimization easter egg.

So its +2 LA for a bunch of half-decent abilities that you can only use a couple of times per adventure, and that refreshes at the end of a succesful adventure if the dm feels like it.

The template while weak is actually stronger than it looks. But it is entirely up to the DM what else it can give/grant, as the whole ability is just tying you to the success of a dragon. That said, from a straight optimization standpoint... It sucks.

yeah, the idea behind it is not bad, but given that it's something an entire campaign would usually be build around, I'd just make it a +0 'you get this at the start' in any campaign it is in. And it's not worth its cost in any campaign that's not about the great game, as you won't be getting new tokens at a decent rate.

Sure, but is there any indication of what actually happens to the tokens? Do they shatter? Fade out of Existence? Go inert? Get fed into a giant slot machine? For that matter are they even physical?

Interesting. I'd never considered their physicality. The way I read it, 'favor tokens' are non-physical, non-object conceptions. Much like 'spell slots'. You don't get actual tokens to put into slots (or hold open slots to put tokens into). They're just meta-physical markers that keep track of options available to you.

I think I know what you were going for and would have been tempted to do the same had you gotten the answer you wanted.

I'm having a rough go of it with this one. Xorvintaal Exarch is at odds with everything I want to do with the Pact-Bound Adept adaptation, and Pact-Bound Adept is at odds with everything I want to do with Xorvintaal Exarch.

i have a good direction for once, but am finding i could use twice the feats for this one..

    Quick question...

How does the Mindsight feat (Lords of Madness) interact with the 100 mile Telepathy?

This likely counts as speculation and as such you may have to ask the Chairperson to rule on it. I suspect it will be highly judge dependent in absence of an official ruling.

It's an unusual form of Telepathy in that it only allows communication with the Exarch's Patron.

But it's not like Mindsight only allows you to detect creatures who have a language, so yeah... not really sure which way a good-faith ruling would fall.

If there is an official answer, it might help someone.

This is, I feel, an essential cheese test for judging this round of competition (and evaluating how judges perceive cheese in general). I'll respond with how I would judge this particular case. Macaberet (or anyone else who wants to judge this round), feel free to chime in if you would like this to be ruled differently.

Mindsight requires the Telepathy special quality. If you carefully read "Creating a Xorvintaal Dragon," it does not grant the Telepathy special quality; its 100 mile telepathy is an extension of language and the ritual used to gain the template. Thus, Mindsight and Xorvintaal "telepathy" don't mix. If your patron Xorvintaal dragon is already a telepath, s/he may qualify for and use the Mindsight feat normally, but it would only apply to such a dragon's Telepathy special quality range, not the 100 miles mentioned in the template's language section.

Also, knowing the exact square of your opponent [Xorvintaal dragon] within 100 miles in a strategy game makes that game slightly less fun IMO. Every dragon would do it if it were possible.

Telepathy being listed under languages is just a quirk of how the later Monster Manuals were written. Other, more traditionally telepathic creatures like Devils have their telepathy listed under languages, and the introduction straight up says this.

There's a decent chance that I'll be judging this round if I can find the time, as I'm pretty stymied by the combination of ingredients, but interested in both of them individually. As far as I'm concerned, Mindsight is fair game.

I know this, but when using this version of the ruling, we need to clarify what things are visible using Mindsight, which is why I'm hesitant to use it. Can a dragon sense the square of all non-mindless creatures within 100 miles, or only things with which its telepathy can interact?

I would rule all creatures, since Mindsight only refers to the range of your Telepathy and specifically says you know the location of all creatures that are non-mindless.

    Yeah.

Regular Telepathy allows communication with creatures that share your language or more commonly creatures which have any language.

However, the Mindsight feat detects creatures which have no language, just so long as they're not Mindless. So it can detect minds with whom you cannot contact nor converse via Telepathy.

...Which makes taking Mindsight the (rough) equivalent of turning off Fog of War in an RTS game. It changes the rules and balance of the game, so we should probably be consistent about it.

Given the nature of Xorvintaal the Game, and since older dragons mentor younger (MM5 pg38-39), all patron dragons would likely take Mindsight after taking the template. The example moves Seed Hoard and Seed Sham are much harder given that Mindsight also allows the dragon to see the type and intelligence score of almost everything within range.
