From OOTS #1112 "The Wall of Names of Very Rich Donors" translated
Hello.
Long time reader (…of the comic. like, really long time, since about 2009), first time poster.
While browsing wiki I was surprised to see that whenever Rich used some of the symbol fonts (link here once forum allows me to post links) for a line or a circle of runes of some kind, it was described as if it's a cryptogram, while it's just normal latin symbols typed in very much known and publicly available font.
Anyway, preface aside, I've noticed that the The Wall of Names of Very Rich Donors from the comic #1112 was never "translated". So I did it. I already know what font it is (Blambot's Dwarf Spirits), so it was just a matter of time to squint on a blown-up version of comic frame and type out the same letters.
First, let me prove you the fact that the font is correct, by showing you "sigdi thundershield" typed in that font. That's a name in the middle of The Wall and the one Durkon is looking at.
Here I retyped it in the correct font / colour / background colour to show that it looks exactly the same. And also added a bigger version below to show more what the letters look like.
Now here's what all the three boards read

People in the original discussion thread did translate Sidgi's name successfully-- someone might have mentioned Shirra as well-- but this was still great and informative. And hilariously enjoyable given that the Giant apparently buries both relevant information and messages to the people trying to decode said information in these cryptograms.

Nice work! I didn't realize those were known fonts. I guess I figured the Giant just made up some squigllies. That would be a nice addition to the wiki.
Do you think Shirra Copperbottom is the same Shirrra that is part of the Dinner Party 5? She apparently sued the copper mine and bought a silver mine with her settlement money, so I bet she's rich enough to get on the wall.Last edited by knag; 2018-09-17 at 01:17 PM.

I don't know who's more insane: the author who hides this kind of information or the reader who deciphers it.
Kudos to both.

Aha. And it looks like those are in the wiki now, too. I remember the one about the secret message now but could have sworn it was another strip -- that's the fuzziness of memory for you.
Hmm... at what point do we decide we need a Translations of the Stick thread to go along with the Index of the Giant's Comments and the Class and Level Geekery thread?Last edited by drazen; 2018-09-28 at 01:05 PM.

If memory serves, the spell that Blackwing intentionally miscast read "Strip[the one where V trains Haley in wand handling] establishes that magic objects explodes when misfiring."
"Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced."

Since I guess we're trying to be comprehensive, here's the ones I remember well enough to find references for.
- 635: "Bet you thought you had found a secret message in this didn't you"
- 867: "Why do you keep looking for secret messages? Don't you have better things to do with your time? I mean this is getting rather silly."
- 885: "NOSECRETMESSAGE"
- 908: "If the boss is dead I'm clocking out early"
- 962: "Still wasting your time decoding this there are no secret messages"
- 981: "This spell blocks the heat"
- 1020: "Strip #970 p5 establishes that magic items explode when activated improperly"
