With a nod, "Let's be about it then."

Moving down the narrow hall to take up position behind Wyne, the bard nods at her to open the door.

Bookshelves line the walls of this small library. Many of the tomes have been torn to shreds, and smoldering piles of ashes fill the room with an acrid stench. One small stack of books on a circular table seem to have escaped destruction. The surviving seven books are history texts, tomes on geography, and tactical manuals.

"As tempting as those books are, at least one is probably trapped. Let's leave those alone for now. I'll detect for magic later. On to the next door?"

Tellos continues down the hallway.

Jemus, looking at the books, just nods to Semult before turning the direction Tellos went, giving him a slight lead, before stalking after him.

Motioning at Wyne to close the door, Trawyn moves down the hall as well. When everyone is in position he opens the next door.

[Kish]

A long table engraved with a relief map of Mendev stands to the east in this long room. A dozen bodies lie scattered about the room, each bearing gruesome and fatal injuries.

Semult grimaces with the grisly scene and apparent lack of their own holy grail. "Let's all search this quickly. Should there be a third floor?" He scans the room for any other doors then heads over to the table. He studies the table's top for any useful information.

The bard walks into the room slowly taking in the grisly scene then turns to Irabeth, "Did you know any of them Commander?".

He then does a quick search of the table.

"I recognize them; they were crusaders, but not close friends. I wonder why their bodies are here.

Only one door left." She steps south to the last unopened door and rattles it. "Locked."

The map, surprisingly, doesn't appear to have been marked since the demons took over the Gray Garrison. There should be another floor, yes.

Semult looks to the fallen crusaders. "Ambushed by traitors perhaps?" He leaves the room after Irabeth and readies for trouble (Y7) once the door to the south is opened.

Tellos offers a prayer for the people whose ranks he was about to join, and prepares himself for the next push.

Motioning Jemus over to the door, "Give this a try, and see if you can pick the lock."

"I'm on it. Just keep an eye on my back and an ear for what's beyond, eh?" he says quietly with a grim smile before listening at the door then checking the lock that stymied the commander, looking for any surprises, before getting to work.

The southern portion of this room holds a wide alabaster basin filled with bloody entrails. The outside of the basin is carved with images of warriors around a raised sun, holding longswords aloft. A flight of stairs ascends to the west. Six more corpses are scattered around the room.

"Desna have mercy...", Alamryn mutters quietly as she walks through the rooms with the others. She holds her hands close to herself, as if trying to make herself as small as possible, while fighting the urge to throw up.

Pushing into the room, the bard checks the bodies looking for any sign of life...but holding no real hope to find any, "Wyne check the stairs."

Bow drawn, and arrow notched, Wyne moves to the base of the stairs and looks upward.

Grimly, Jemus stands once the door is open, switching his tools for his swords as he slowly enters, looking about. He nods at Wyne and follows him to the stairs, about a pace or two back, ready to pull him back if necessary.

"No one's visible up there from here," Wyne says in a low voice. "Blood on the walls."

[CWater]

Alamryn wanders over to where Wyne is and peers up the stairs as well. Like a sleepwalker she begins climbing them.

At the top of the staircase is a wide hall which stretches for thirty feet before ending in a door. From behind the door, you hear a voice which is familiar to you from the calls for surrender you've heard while moving about in Kenabres.

"--want to know why someone who isn't Minagho is contacting me from there?" Areelu Vorlesh's voice says.
"Minagho said she wasn't going to be robbed of the chance to participate in the slaughter, so she left me to guard the wardstone," another, very nervous-sounding, female voice replies. "But there are intruders!"
"Argh," says Areelu's voice. "Don't cringe, I'm not mad at you. Just--just hold them off. I'll be there in less than a minute. Shove her horns up her..."

Then you hear the second voice casting a spell.

[CWater]

Alamryn backs down the stairs very quickly, part of her thinking that she should try to be quiet, but her limbs refuse to obey. Fear is clear on her face.

"There's someone upstairs", she whispers that almost sounds like a hiss, "I didn't see her, but I'm guessing she's probably another demon. A spellcaster. Vorlesh is coming here, she said she'll be here in a minute! What do we do?!"

[Cavir]

Hearing the news, Semult went into high gear vocally to get everyone moving fast. "She is coming? We have to get to the wardstone first." He pulls out the Rod of Cancellation. "Make a path through them for me to get to the wardstone. GO GO GO!"

[RolandDeschain]

Trawyn

The bard lifts his horn and blows a clarion note, "For all that is right and good in the world, let's be about it!" Then dashes up the stairway.

We are doing this? I suppose we must. If we encounter Vorlesh, we die, I've no doubts about that. But I guess we might have a chance against this other demon, Desna protect us...

Trawyn's song and the sense of urgency help Alamryn to steel her mind and she casts a spell on her staff before running back up the stairs.

"Indeed." Irabeth runs up the stairs with the rest of you.

At the top of the staircase is a wide hall which stretches for thirty feet before ending in a door. Blood stains the walls as you rush up to the door. Irabeth tries to open it and, finding it locked, immediately chops it in half with the axe you found downstairs.

On the other side you see a half-elven woman in plate armor. She raises a scythe threateningly. Behind her, a chunk of crystal hovers in midair, encased in a network of lights.

The magical effect holding the wardstone is by far the most powerful thing you've ever seen, though you can only guess at its purpose.

Maci and Dona are the quickest on their feet and rush in. Maci heads straight at the enemy and attacks. Dona circles around to threaten from the rear.

Semult rushes past the rest of the party, focused on getting the Rod of Cancellation that is now concealed behind his forearm to the wardstone. He gets into the room and sees the magical setup which gives him pause. Instinctively with a word of magic he points to the ground near him then the enemy. A celestial dog is summoned and charges at the half-elf.
