confused How did Durkula survive being banished by Belkar?

The last time we saw Durkula before the last few strips was when Belkar stabbed him in the heart with a wooden stake. It was enough to "kill" the vampire so that Durkon's soul was finally free.

    Questions:
    1) If a vampire inhabits the body of a previously living host, then who's body is Durkula in? And who's body is Durkon in?
    2) In AD&D is a vampire defeated when they're forced out of their host? Are they defeated when stabbed in the heart with a wooden stake?
    3) How did Durkula come back? Or did he ever go?
    4) How can Durkula be defeated if he doesn't need a body?

What are you talking about? Durkon* is as dead as one can be. The vampire we follow here is the one made from Gontor Hammerfell, Exarch of the Creed of the Stone.

There seems to be a massive unstated assumption baked into the first post. I just can’t figure out what it is. I’m not sure it is confusion over the ex-exarch. Maybe the OP thinks there is only one vampire spirit, shared across all vampires?

I'm inclined to think the assumption is that the dwarf vampire giving the orders must be Greg and therefore Greg is still around, somehow separate from Durkon.

    1. Durkon's in his own body, and Durkon* is nowhere, because he ceased to exist in any meaningful sense after Durkon's memory overflow maneuver.
    2. AD&D is irrelevant, given that this comic is about 3.5, but, in 3.5, yes and yes, if I recall correctly.
    3. He didn't. The guy giving the orders in recent strips is Gontor*, Ex-arch of the Creed of Stone, and his successor.
    4. He does and he was.

I think alowe forgot that the Exarch was a character and made the same mistake as Blackwing, here.

    Also, his angst-ridden origin story!

    None.

And who's body is Durkon in?
    His own.

    2) In AD&D is a vampire defeated when they're forced out of their host?
    Most certainly.

Are they defeated when stabbed in the heart with a wooden stake?
Only until the stake is removed. But you can destroy the body after staking the vampire, permanently destroying it.

    3) How did Durkula come back?
    He didn't.

    Or did he ever go?
    Yes, he did.

    4) How can Durkula be defeated if he doesn't need a body?
    He does need one.

Thumbs up Re: How did Durkula survive being banished by Belkar?

    Ok, so...

I didn't trace back the previous episode and notice the difference.
