(Yet more medical stuff to add to this thread) Does anyone here know how long the anesthetic used for toes is supposed to last? A day later and it feels asleep. This morning it was still numb.

Sure, by keeping the television on a lot of time (mostly PBS kids shows), turning "closed captioning" on, and keeping the volume low.

    Worked like a charm!

I remember my younger brother didn't learn to read until he was 7, and that my parents and I helped him learn with a book that really pushed the phonetic aspects of the language with some specialized diacritics, font sizes, and the like. It worked decently.

I also remember teaching myself to read when I was two, which basically came down to a floor level book case full of Doctor Seuss being available to me, plus my parents reading to me. That combination of knowledge and options is probably pretty easy to recreate, and while it doesn't always work I'm far from the only person to teach myself to read. I assume most people do.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that.

My brother, who is a teacher, says that teaching reading is best done with phonemes. I am no where near qualified to talk about it, but perhaps this link can at least give you an idea of what to look for when looking for ideas.

Even better: start with a language that has a closer to 1-1 relationship between sounds and letters. Like, say, Spanish.

We did have better correlation, but then some lazy printing press people decided not to make a few english characters for their printing press, so the spelling changed.

Honestly, I was more thinking of the fact that English has like 20-something vowel sounds, which you somehow transcribe with only five six symbols.

I hated French for having 8 vowels, including three variations on 'e' which I never managed to get right. But at least they tell me which one I'm supposed to use. I've no idea what I would've done to master English if I had not cheated my way into it.

Fair. Aside from ash (Æ), I think all the other symbols I can think of as part of English were constanants.

English is a language? I thought it was a random collection of sounds we all pretend has meaning.

On that note, I do know a few words where the spelling differs between US and Commonwealth English because printers used different substitutes for missing letters. I believe that while in the use Æ was generally printed as E, over here in the place the language develloped AE was preferred.

But yeah, I do find myself sometimes correcting my immigrant friends on vowel sounds. I do get why it's so hard, and would support the introduction of accents to make it easier for people to get it.

English has more than enough accents as is, it's diacritics it is in dire need of.
