Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
It could, but that just feels like a weird writing choice to me. By all rights that I can think of Jay's motives and status as friend or foe should remain a mystery until the main characters can figure that out themselves. In my mind it makes Jay more intriguing. To be first given any insight into that from a possibly non-canon side story about video game logic just seems off to me.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
This is effectively correct:
IN ANY CASE... I'm not ready to say how canon the whole of this storyline is.
I AM ready to say, however, that anything we learn about Jay's backstory IS canon.Interested in MitD? Join us in MitD's thread. There is a world of imagination

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
In that case I hope that the "how is this happening" mystery leads to this being canon, because otherwise we shouldn't know this stuff about Jay just yet.

"I'm not ready to say how canon the whole of this storyline is."
Translation:
"This story is definitely canon, but I don't want people to know yet, so I'm going to play like it's still undecided."
Of course, this is Dan we're talking about here, so maybe he really is just writing a story with no knowledge of where it's going? It wouldn't be the first time.Princess Celestia's Homebrew Corner

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
No, it's more like "I don't know where this would go in the canon, so I may declare it to not have happened at all, just so I don't have to figure out when it happened, but that's Jay's characterisation going forward".
Dan likes plunge characters into a scenario as a way to figure out what the characters are like, but doesn't want to tie himself to the scenarios having actually happened in the main story. Which is fair enough - it's like he writes fanfics of his own comic, as a way to further explore the characters.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Dan has openly admitted to initially not knowing where the story was going, so I don't see Celestia's comment as much of an ad hominem.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Grace's "least-favorite Celebrity-Voiced NPC," eh? This is based off of Fable, so who in Fable's cast was good at marksmanship, voiced by a celeb, and would be someone Grace despi - Oh no.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
It is always nice when panels are reproduced verbatim this long apart. Gives a great chance to see the degree of art evolution.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Yup and it is not just about drawing quality. Paneling and scene composition improved as well. We see much more of the emotions of the characters, because their faces are visible. In the old version the second panel was used for a small flashback and in the third one we see Grace from the back. The new version focuses on the characters, which works much better. This is why the third panel was cut into two parts so we can see both Grace and Sarah.

And it still keeps the older, slightly shorter hairstyle for Sarah – good catch, there, detail I wouldn't have been surprised if it was overlooked.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Okay, I really don't want to sound crude here, but... I get the feeling that Wednesday's comic is going to move the scene to someone else and the next time we see Elliot and Ashley they'll be wearing each other's shirts.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Considering what happened in the changing room in the mall, I would not rule it out. I know that feeling, when crowbar would not be enough to pull you away from someone.
In order to be more subtle, I will describe the mood Elliot and Ashley are in through a song.In a war it doesn't matter who's right, only who's left.

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
Oh hey, this thread seems way more enjoyable than the TVTropes one. Made a new account and everything to come in here.
So how about that latest NP comic? I'd link, but postcount restrictions.
Interesting foreshadowing, especially with how much Susan has already acknowledged changed. But what I really wonder is how many of these characters are actually NPCs. None of the other supposed NPCs have reacted any way but humorously (if at all) to Susan's fourth wall breaks, have they?
By the way, does this forum use BBCode? For links and suchlike.

Welcome! Yes, at the bottom for me it says "BB Code is On" so I assume that means the forum uses it :)

Re: El Goonish ShiVe: Look! Squirrel!
So the latest NP. Timeskip, obviously, but... doesn't bust size equate to magic level in this setting? Either Susan somehow lost levels or I'm forgetting something.

Which, with only one curve reduction potion left, suggests that she's back to being maximum level in magic, since if she wasn't she'd save it until she was.
