Though this is, I think, likely a comment on Fable rather than on the comic as such, I observe that of the heroes, there's one (Rhoda) who would have preferred Susan be coded as "good," one (Jay) who didn't care and presumably would have not cared even if she was an NPC, and one (Grace) who will apparently be less than pleased to be approached by someone who's currently "neutral" rather than "evil."

That is probably a Fable thing as, in the game, Hammer was the goody-two shoes, Garth was a neutral objectivist, and Reaver was a selfish ***hole.

Yeah, Reaver is the absolute worst.

Probably my least favorite character in the franchise.

Eh, I imagine Grace will be evil in a good way. Sort of a negative image of Dolores Umbridge.

Eh. He's a terrible person, and I'd never want to meet him, but he's super entertaining as an outside observer. He's just got so many funny lines. It's also great that if you take too long to kill the final boss, he'll actually kill steal from you.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this. I can't remember a single line of his I thought was funny, and him kill stealing from you is one of many complaints I have about that 'boss battle.'

Oh, don't get me wrong. That "battle" was the greatest disappointment in gaming history. I just think Reaver's bit in it was funny.

And thus does the chance of an actual explanation for people's implausible reaction to Diane's speech get discarded so that Diane doesn't have to deal with having accidentally used a type of magic that bothers her*.

*Okay, that's not fair; I suspect Dan considers the lack of said explanation a feature, not a bug.

If everyone is paying attention to her, they're they're not thinking about anything else, and if they're all thinking about what she said then they're going to have feelings related to what she said, and reactions to those feelings.

Like say, someone who knows that he lied about having sex with her projecting and accusing someone else of lying, leading to a chain reaction.

Even without super charisma, it's hardly implausible that a confident woman standing up on a table, demanding attention, and loudly and firmly stating something with all the confidence in the world is going to convince someone.

Or, as Dan said, Diane rolled a natural twenty on her charisma check.

She managed to convince that one person, which caused a chain reaction.

It's unlikely, but far from implausible. It doesn't get a strict explanation becuase it doesn't need one.

It also fits very well with the previous strip. Note that only "Hey Listen" and "I'm A Virgin" are in the special spooky text. Not the "everyone who says otherwise is lying" part. So it works as a "this was drawing attention, not brainwashing people into believing" explanation.

I could be wrong, but I'm assuming all One Piece references beyond this one (if any) are going to be, at best, superficial. Cluttering up with too many references to too many properties would just make them all fall flat, and I want to believe that Dan is smart enough to realize that. This is probably a one-off joke.

Like I said at the time it happened, that reaction is completely plausible to me, and for exactly the reason Dan explained today:

The confessions not actually related to Diane are a bit odd, but they could just be caught up in the excitement/hype of the situation.

Everyone collectively bursting into mocking laughter at her would also have been believable to me. I think it really depended a great deal on the first noticeable reaction. The crowd was going to react strongly, one way or another, but most people would be worried about their image and not sure which way would be viewed better, and the first reaction or two gave them a deciding cue.

Okay, I've been parsing the latest update, and I think I've got it figured out.
That last frame? Tedd knows about Adrian Raven's 'tasting magic' from Grace, because of course he does. He just made the connection.
But will he keep it under his hat? That ... is tricky.

Also, I appreciate the explanation for why Diane was sticking her tongue out earlier. That had me utterly lost.

Half-elf, unless the mother was also an elf (in which case it seems likely they didn't tell each other). We know it eventually dilutes to the point of just being an affinity for particular types of magic, and/or a tendency to wizardness, but Diane's got the ears and other wizards we've seen don't.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that everyone with immortal ancestry – or even everyone with an immortal parent – is a wizard. And we do know Abraham thought for a moment that Adrian losing his sword was sufficient to remove him as a threat, before remembering he was also a wizard. So that's (weak) evidence of the possibility of non-wizard elves. And if it's guaranteed that everyone with two wizard parents is a wizard, that implies that it's not guaranteed for only one wizard parent, and "has immortal ancestry" thus doesn't necessarily imply "unbroken line of wizard parents going back to an immortal".
