Default Re: The Winds of Oblivion

The Captain and First Officer share a meaningful look.

"That's almost certainly the case, Mr. Leornian. But, and I stress this, one should not attempt to approach an enemy stronghold alone. Flying to the mesa without any backup sounds like a bad idea. Do you agree?"

Kalinda jumps in, almost as if she's trying to cut off the Captain's train of thought, "It's important to move with caution as we approach Boatswain's Rest. The port isn't open, and I doubt most of the people on the island have ever heard of an airship, much less seen one. It's going to take some tact to get them to avoid attacking us. Getting them to trade will take considerable effort."

The Captain nods, turning back to the map. "Aye, that's true enough. Mayhaps we should send a shore party to the island first. Then, when we get the all-clear, we can move the ship in to range for transport of goods."

The Captain and Kalinda both look to Zeph, but it's Kalinda who speaks.

"How much can you carry in flight? I don't think it's wise to send you alone, and Archelos' wing is still in no shape to fly."

Zeph glances at his forearms, which are exactly as thick and muscled as one would expect from a man who studies books all day.

"Not...a lot...if I go really slow I may be able to take someone slight like Alessia." Zeph feels mildly embarrassed putting someone's weight on the spot like this, buts its best to be honest is a planning session. "But if we need to carry supplies my bag of holding can hold a few hundred pounds."

"Other ships I've served on had small rowboats to serve as a last-ditch life raft, or something to use to get into a shallow port. Does the App have any similar vessels?"

The Captain grimaces like he's suddenly tasted bile. "We had two. One was completely destroyed in the attack and the other isn't flying. That's actually what I have Master Ironblood working on right now, the lift apparatus for the shuttle. He says it's bleeding heat and isn't safe to fly. I reckon that it might be uncomfortable, and more than a bit unsafe, but it'd be serviceable in a pinch. That man's standards have always been a bit high."

Kalinda only barely tightens her lips at this last comment. The Captain doesn't seem to notice.

"Anyway, if you can help him get the shuttle serviceable to his satisfaction, it should be able to take you and three others. I'd give it four to five miles before the heat gets too uncomfortable. Mr. Leornian, you're the one with first-hand knowledge of the island, so I leave it to you to chose your team. You should have someone ready to fight and someone ready to talk. It might also be said that these folk could be a tad xenophobic, so non-humans might encounter some curiosity, if not outright hostility."

A slow, wide, wolfish grin starts to spread across the Captain's face. Behind him, Kalinda starts to shout, "Mister Leornian! You forget yourself! Absolutely not! It's out of the question! Sir, I apologize for my Navigator. I take full responsibility. It won't happen again. I . . . honestly . . . the gall!"

The Captain doesn't even acknowledge her ranting. He just grins, and Zeph can swea his eyes grow just the tiniest bit brighter. His calm, rumbling reply is enough to cut through the First Officer's tirade and force her to silence.

"No need for disciplinary action, Number One. He's just young. And inexperienced. I'm sure he meant no offense."

Kalinda stares daggers at Zeph, but regains her composure.

"I won't pretend that I wouldn't enjoy it, but no, Mr. Leornian. I won't be a member of an away mission. The Captain's place is on his ship. I'll stay here."

Kalinda speaks in clipped, angry punctuation. "The Captain is too valuable to risk on a dangerous mission ashore. It's usually the job of the First Officer to organize and command an away mission. You've been granted an honor. Live up to it."

Thank you for setting me straight. That said I think Assistant Gunnery Sergeant Storms, First Officer Waycrest, and Medic al-Aruni would make the best away team, sir. Storms raises his eyebrows, not that anyone can see them. ”Oh, no, that won’t be a problem sir. I’ll set him up with some food and water before we leave and we’ll be fine. Just don’t flash red lights at him.” Upon seeing everyone’s confusion at that last bit, Storms grimaces and says, “one of my first jobs when I came to Absalom was bodyguard work for a wizard. He had and apprentice who was having trouble getting the hang of dancing lights- couldn’t make the spell last longer than about a minute, and had a devil of a time controlling its movement- so he told to boy to keep casting dancing lights until he ironed out the kinks.

So the boy is sitting there casting this glowing ball of red light and making it dance all over the room, and Scar-Eye walks in, and I guess thinks... I dunno, it’s a challenge or something? But he goes berserk trying to catch, or maybe kill, that red ball of light. Chases it all around the room. For HOURS, until the kid decides he’s got the hang of it and stops casting the spell. Ever since he’s had an annoying tendency to pounce at red lights.”
Storms awkwardly shuffles his feet after that little divergence. “But anyway, yeah, I’d love to go explore that base with you.”

Zeph chuckles at the story. It's funny to imagine that beast acting like a kitten chasing dust motes in a sunbeam.

"I have an idea for a complex plan, but I think a simpler plan may be best: We sail the shuttle in to the docks, coming from the ocean side. Following the path any trading vessel would follow. We carry with us moderate amounts of goods that we can safely assume they don't have. Salt, copper, bronze, clay, iron, steel, exotic spices, oats, grain, wheat, coal, cow milk, chocolate, beer/liquor/wine. (I don't fully know what's in our stores). No more than 10 pounds of each. A free sample. theirs to have of good will, and promise of more to trade for lumber in good faith. I think the First Officer would be best to speak for us."

The Captain nods and Kalinda seems mollified.

"Agreed. You'll need to coordinate with Master Gent to see what we have available for trade. I would stick to foodstuffs for now. We can use durable goods as a bargaining chip later and we don't want to make them think we're a more tempting target than we already are."

Kalinda nods. "Agreed, sir. Permission to prepare for departure?"

The Captain give a lazy salute. "Dismissed."

Kalinda snaps a crisp salute and move out of the room, presumably to her quarters to gather her supplies.

The Captain looks to Zeph and Storms. "Once you get the shuttle flying, it'll be the only way on or off that island for a little while. You'll need to have your wits about you. Ms. Waycrest may seem a little intense, but she knows her business. Listen to her, but remember that I put you in command of this mission. She'll hop in line if you pull rank, but you won't make a friend in doing it."

The Captain gives a perfunctory salute before dismissing the men. They find Throki in a slightly more pleasant mood, and with minimal cajoling, they're able to convince him to start assembly on the less-than-ideal propulsion apparatus for the shuttle. "She'll run warm, but if'n you use the water to cool her, she shouldnae burst into flames. Might be a bit easier for folk to swallow your arrival if'n you dannae use her to land in the middle of town."

Gregor Gent is far more helpful, and loads the away party with a brick of tea, a crate of tallow candles, a sack of salt, and three cases of Drumish wine. "We can pick up more in Almas. Folk like this'll be used to goat's milk, wheat beer, and brackish well water. Not a proper vineyard for a hundred leagues. They'll listen to the clink o' those bottles even if they turn deaf ear to you."

The Doctor pales slightly at being informed of his conscription, but takes to the orders quickly, beginning to pack his satchel with all manner of remedies and equipment. All the while, he speaks to himself in a rapid patter, "Blain bane, gildea myrrh, no, no, yes, no - distilled terrap sap, soothe syrup, vivifying moxibustion needles - do you think we'll encounter any oozes while we're on this mission? - No matter, bringing alkali just in case - angelstep, leechwort - " This goes on for quite a while, with the doctor examining and discarding items seemingly at random.

Finally, after three hours of preparation, Throki lets Zeph know that the shuttle is ready for departure whenever he commands.

Zeph pulls out his maps and a compass. He charts a path to get to the docks of Boatswain's Rest entirely through the sea. The need for water cooling the shuttle actually synergies very well with the plan he had in mind. An aerial arrival would scare the town and lead to surprise, alienation, and distrust. They'll skim the shuttle on the water to keep the engine cool as much as possible and present themselves as a familiar, known quantity.

The four crewmates load into the shuttle and take off from the beached Apparition. By sea, the journey takes a languorously long time compared to flight, but the course Zeph charts is sound and they avoid the hidden rocky shoals that might've disemboweled larger vessels. Zeph makes sure to note them in case the Apparition has to use this same nautical route.

It's after noon by the time they see the smoke of Boatswain's Rest. The sun hides behind an overcast sky, but Zeph would estimate it to be close to 4PM. Weaving between fishing vessels, they notice the sailors eyeing them suspiciously and silently.

The team moves up to the docks and is immediately greeted by twelve rough-looking men. They all look at the group, not with malice or hostility, but with a promise. "Bring no trouble here," their looks say. They surround a plain looking man bearing a leatherbound sheaf of papers, clearly the dockmaster.

"Ho, there," the man says in a not quite impolite call. "Port's closed. No outsiders. Head on back to your ship."

Zeph can see as several men scan the horizon, anxiously searching for the ship that had birthed these four.

The dockmaster's eye narrow at Zeph.

    "No. Go back."

There's a rustle of canvas as Kalinda begins to pull gear out of the bottom of the ship. Several men on the docks tighten their grips on hookpikes and boarding axes. Kalinda tosses a waxcloth wrapped brick of tea onto the dock. The men poke at it curiously until one of them exclaims, "Tea! Over twenty gold measures worth! Fifty at least! Maybe more!"

"We have trade and you have numbers. If we go back and sink on the way, neither of us will have anything. Let us talk to your people so we can get what we need to leave fastest."

The dockmaster looks peeved, but sees the attitude of the men nearby as they peer into the shuttle. To turn away the newcomers now would arise the ire of his men.

"Fine. No weapons." He stares pointedly at Kalinda's sword and Storms' earthbreaker. Tossing a line to the shuttle, he tows in the ship and has his men hold out hands to receive the groups arms.

The man pat down the group, checking for weapons and, presumably, contraband. Kalinda produces a surprising number of blades from the folds of her jacket. The men are less-than-gentlemanly while running their hands along the woman's' shapely legs and behind. She bears it with a suffering look and a tightness to her lips.

Zeph's observations are acute and calculating. He sees as townspeople stop what they're doing to stare at the outsiders walking through town. "They're exchanging Absalomi, Druman, and Andoran coinage. Silver and copper, mostly." The men look to be rough seas folk, a few of whom bears similar tattoos to the ones sported by the creatures that attacked the Apparition. The women are plain and dress conservatively in homespun woollen skirts. The children look at the visitors with curiosity tinged with fear. "Insular. Xenophobic. Maybe they've heard scary stories about outsiders coming from the sea."

Storms notices much the same, but sees a definite look of abject fear as he prowls by in his mask. Not an uncommon reaction to his Nameless mein.

"How are your winters here?" Zeph asks aloud to their escorts.

There's a long pause before one of the escorts barks a curt and callous, "Cold."

"Have you had any troubles recently?"

One of the younger men escorting the group laughs. "You came, didn't ya?"

He's cuffed roughly by one of the older men in the group. "Quiet, Rolland. Y'ain't got nuthin' to say to these folk, y'hear?"

The boy shakes the cuff off nonchallantly. "Jus' tryin' to hear new, Gob, didn't mean nuthin' by it."

A few, quiet minutes of walking later Rolland pipes in again. "Is it true that some outlander folk charge a copper penny to see wha's twixt their nethers?" This elicits a sharper cuff and a curse. " I's jus' askin'! I's jus' askin'!"

Just as Rolland begins to ask another question, the group stops in front of a long, wooden structure. Standing at the top of the entry steps is a plain looking man with intelligent eyes. Around him, a small crowd has formed to watch the meeting with the newcomers.

The man speaks, projecting so the crowd can hear.

"Hello. I am Jayen. I am the mayor of this town. Who are you and why have you come here?"

Zeph notices pointedly that he doesn't say "Welcome."

Zeph doesn't mind ignorance. In fact he likes ignorance. Ignorance is so easily curable. And Zeph is acutely aware of how ignorant he is about so many things. He doesn't even have a full list of all the things he doesn't know about.

And that's what drives him. If Zeph wasn't ignorant, he'd have nothing to learn. Learning is what drives him.

But these people...they're WILLFULLY ignorant. They shun opportunities to learn. Learning scares them. The mere presence of anything different is "trouble". We're not trouble, we're an opportunity! Zeph mentally yells at Rolland.

Willful ignorance and groping Kalinda, two sides of the same coin. Zeph was prepared to come in kowtowing and acting harmless and appealing to a common sense of decency. But these people can't comprehend common decency. They can't see the beauty that is mutual benefit of trade. They can't even show hospitality to strangers in need. They'll need to be forced to see a beneficial opportunity.

"Jayen, my name is Zephyr Leornian. We need to trade for lumber to fix our ship. We brought a sample of what we can offer in trade. We're here," Zeph points at the ground "because you're the closest town that can offer lumber and our ship is too damaged to go anywhere else. Trade with us and we'll be on our way before you notice."

Zeph hesitates, he really didn't want negotiations to go this way, but he's going to meet their hostility head to head.

"If we can't trade for lumber..." Zeph scratches his chin as if in thought, "then I suppose the whole crew of our ship will just have to move in nearby...and start our own lumber operation. Even with our fifty sailors, gosh that could take...months? And we'd just be using up all of our own tea, candles, and wine." He emphasizes the products so other towns people will pressure Jayen.

"Or, let's make a fair trade, take advantage of our medic, Dr. Abu and all of the medicines he has at his disposal, and you'll only ever have seen the four of us we'll be gone before you know it."

"Or we could just kill you."

The man says it with such utter nonchalance that it feels like it physically hits Zeph and makes him catch his breath. He is, of course, right. He could kill the four of them right here. The townspeople outnumber them ten to one. Even with Zeph's magic, there's no way they'd walk out of this alive. Thankfully, Kalinda speaks up before things get any further.

"You could, true. But I don't think that'd be good business. Our ship is far away, and I doubt you have enough time to search every little shoal in this entire archipelago. If we live, you get trade. If we die, you get nothing."

Jayen seems to mull in this, and a slight smirk briefly graces the corner of his mouth. "Fair."

Doctor al-Aruni lets out an audible lungful of air.

The Mayor turns and, without any further ceremony, motions for the four to follow him into the long building. Inside, they see a long hallway with branching rooms. Floor, walls, ceiling, everything is fashioned from the same dark wood and is carved with exquisite detail. The artisans who built this structure took pride in their work. The Mayor leads the four into a room adorned with simple furs and a broad desk. An oil lamp provides sputtering light and the rancid smoke smells of whale fat. He sits behind the desk and motions for the four to take seats opposite.

"Lumber we have. But your threat to take yourselves to another island doesn't stand. We own it all. You won't take it by force. Not even with fifty men." He adds particular emphasis to the number, wryly raising a single eyebrow. The bluff hadn't worked. "Tell me where your ship is beached and I'll send my shipwrights to come assess the damage. We'll let you know what the price will be after."

    "No."

Kalinda's reply is pointed and direct, but not rude. "The location of our ship is ours. We know what we need and we can negotiate price based on that alone." She slides a piece of parchment across the table detailing the needed amount and general lengths of wood. As she does, she looks to Zeph and he sees the importance in her words. The location of the Apparition is their only leverage. Were Jayen to find out that information, he could send a raiding party and take what he wants. Even the skill of the remaining crew isn't enough to handle several boatloads of men. Thankfully, Jayen doesn't actually know how few men they actually have. He only knows it's less than fifty.

Jayen nods with a knowing smile. Zeph gets the impression that he would have been disappointed if it had been that easy. "Fair enough. We can provide rough or cut lumber. Cut will fit your specifications, but it'll take longer. Rough will be quicker and cheaper, but you'll need to cut it yourself. Don't know what kind of operation you're running, but most ships don't have the equipment to fashion new -"

"We do." Kalinda interjects. Smart, thinks Zeph. She's establishing that we're not some hobbled merchant barge ripe for the picking. We're a ship prepared to patch our own hurt. We aren't an easy target. Additionally, letting him know which cuts we need would give him a rough estimate as to the actual damage taken by the Apparition. How hurt she is and how long it'll take the crew to fix her.

The Mayor seems slightly annoyed at being interrupted, but doesn't continue. "Alright. Based on your needs, we should be able to get you rough cuts by . . ." he looks up, doing some mental math, "day after tomorrow. That suit your liking?"

Kalinda looks to Zeph for her orders.

"Sunset, tomorrow. charge us the cut price. What we brought with us today is yours to keep, not part of the payment.

I'll make another offer - your town wants to be left alone as much as possible. I want to respect that. Concluding negotiations tonight the four of us will shuttle back out immediately so we don't bother you or your people any further.

We'll limp our ship into port tomorrow evening just long enough to pick up our goods and cast off again without any crew going past the docks.

Jayen shakes his head. "I don't think you understand, son. You need lumber. We don't need candles and wine. You can pay whatever you like, but the lumber won't be cut till the day after tomorrow. And we can't have your ship coming into port. If I rockon right, she won't fit in dock and there ain't enough silver in all Druma that'll convince me to let you into cannon range."
