    [Doom Door]

Running away is often a completely viable solution to many problems.

    Unveiling yourself, however, is not.

When cloaked in flesh, this dreamland didn't react quite so hostilely to Eao. But now that she has made it clear that she's any enemy?

    The sky grows dark.

The previously white stone becomes pitted, cracked, and stained with mud.

Previously immaculately trimmed hedges are now wild snags of malignant brambles.

The sense of hostility and otherness rapidly intensifies as nothing pulls itself out of the hole in the world. From that sucking wound in reality comes a shape, deep darkness, insectile and alien. Antenna whip. Claws grasp at the pavement, carving furrows through it, jaws gnash at the air. A shadow. A shade of oblivion. Points of light, like fireflies in the night, dance where one might expect a head to be. Everything near it begins to slowly unwind.

    It is jabberwocky. Nothing. Nonsense.

    A scion of the Dreamheart.

The blot of unreality releases a scream of white noise and garbled voices, sonic talons that rend and annihilate thought. And then it begins moving toward Eao with malicious intent.

There is a door. The decay sweeping across the dream glade hasn't reached it. Not yet. She could still escape, but she must hurry.

    What does she do?

Eao runs backwards, firing her grenade launcher again and again at the Jabberwocky, constantly moving towards the door, dodging brambles and emptiness. Hopefully it will still be there by the time she gets there, because the time she's taking to aim and shoot is time she's not taking to escape.

    Carlie thinks for a bit.
Calm Reed's suggestion is definitely the best out of all their options. If they can do that, it's definitely the best. "Actually, if that secretary is in full support of what's going on, then I imagine they'll be sending some people after us soon."

There's only one problem: "Where did the disappearances happen? If what we were told is correct, the guy we're looking for had gone in for a meeting with higher-ups and got his 'promotion' there. OF course, the promotion story could just be an after-the-fact thing and he went missing elsewhere..."

"If they do send people after us, they will be delivering information right into our hands." Calm Reed seems confident in her ability to deal with whoever they send. "Then again, if they are smart, they make sure their leg-breakers know as little as possible." She pauses. "From what I remember, all the missing people disappeared at work. So investigating the crime scenes would be difficult."

"Speaking of leg-breakers, those ones you stopped earlier have probably reported back by now," she says.

Carlie seems to have come to a decision: "Regardless of what we choose to do," she says, "it seems are only options are to wait around hoping for something to happen, or to get inside of their factories."

She starts walking towards the nearest obviously-factory place. "Let's see if we can convince them to give us a tour, first. Breaking in should wait until after that fails."

A toothy smirk forms upon her soot-smeared face before swiftly fading away. From her seat, she gestures for Magtok to come closer. "Why don't you come have a seat, old boy?" The instant that Magtok (presumably) sits down within the uncomfortable chair at the other end of the desk, she rises up out of her own. Her broad, blunt fingers tap at the desk for a second before she steps away towards a nearby desk, upon which an antique cylinder phonograph has been set. "How's about some tunes?"

Before she even gives the cyborg a second to answer, the cylinder phonograph comes to life seemingly of its own accord. A second later, the sound of the jazzy, mournful little dirge fills the room entirely. Ms. Meggie retrieves a pair of glasses on her way back to the desk, setting one down in front of the cyborg. Then, the door into the office slams shut across the room. Should Magtok turn his head to glance at the door, when he faces his glass once again, he'll find it mysteriously full with a fine, rich brandy. The foreman-miss settles down into her chair once again before taking a sip at her drink.

"I ain't here to punch the bag, no. I wanna start this off on the level with you, hun." She makes an uncomfortable sound with her mouth, as if sucking a lemon that isn't there, before continuing. "This industry ain't no cakewalk. It's hard. It's cruel. It ain't for nobody soft. But ain't nothing good ever been easy, no?" She cracks her knuckles. "Half of all the juice on this miserable little rock comes from here." A frown forms upon her face. "An' sure, some folk ain't likin' how we run things, but there's no denyin' that without us, this part of town ain't nothing." Her frown just deepens here. "An' yet, there are still some who think we oughta shut down, that we ain't no good for the people here."

"People been talkin', there's been some threats. It's becoming clearer that we need to up security."

"That's why my boss wants you here."
"Internal or external security threats? Or both?" Magtok asks between sips of his brandy, forgoing any sort of beating around the bush to just ask his question directly. The less time spent in this uncomfortable chair with this uncomfortable music, the better. Plus, if he's going to be busting a fledgling union, that's going to cost extra. This place is one well-spoken, clever revolutionary leader away from sit-ins, picket lines, rioting, and anything else the proletariat uprising deems necessary to seize (the means of producing) fire from the divine bourgeois.

...Oh man, can you imagine how cool that would be? A socialist Prometheus? Now that you mention it, Magtok's almost hoping there's someone like that around here now. He'd make a tidy profit now, have a change of heart later and sell out to Prommy later, then New Zeus (or whoever the hell M.H. is) gets overthrown, and everyone lives happily ever after. I'm sure everyone would understand his choices in the end; nobody would shove him into the factory machinery for being an accomplice to unrestrained, capitalistic excess, or for being a filthy socialist turncoat. Heck, even if they wanted to, surely they'd have bigger problems to worry about than one measly security contractor, right? We'll be out of town and counting our dollars all the way to the bank while the battles are still raging. We're smart like that, not like those stinky heroes who'd insist on sticking around all the way to the bitter end. That's why you don't see demons getting into a prolonged war with the MagCave, see. Unlike VIGIL, we know when to get the hell out.

Carlie reasons out what might be best: "I'll bet they already suspect that we're here to investigate something," she says. "So if we come up with something completely unrelated, they might get suspicious. What we need is something reasonable that, if they go along with it, would get us closer to the evidence."

    She thinks some more.
"How about...we're there for workplace safety? Make suggestions to improve it, explain why making it safer can make their work more effective, and so on. They might let us in to see files or interview people, hopefully."
    She keeps on walking.

"Fine, Ah'll open the door. An' ye'll check me over, too. I don't want to have caught it." He says, and then reaches forwards to open the door. He unbolts it and pushes the door open, ready to greet Zee and her companions. This, however, doesn't occur as the freed girls have backed away, but not the gunslinger. She's fluidly lifted her howdah pistol and fired, blasting a .50 calibre lead ball through the Zabrak's head and into the wall behind him. The girls jump at the sound, including the one inside, and he drops his blaster as he falls over.

This should be around the point Larza and Minerva arrive, to the echoing sound a flintlock being fired and the gunslinger casually starts to reload the discharged barrel.

His arms are too long for his frame, and despite the suit he's wearing being clearly tailored for him, it still doesn't fit properly.

The Guild doesn't have any obvious headquarters, just a lot of shops where people are bought and sold. Any asking for leaders are directed to the security office, where usually they wait for a while in the company of several bulky orcs in kevlar with baseball bats.

"I am the messenger for a proposal to your union. A forming of an alliance, if they are willing to listen." She replies while holding out her arms in case they were going to check her for weapons. Which she have none. The satyr does have with her the unusual equipment however which she's willing to hand over, with the exception of a small bag of dust she will insist is vital for the message.

    The Silken Whisper

Minerva arrives just the shoot is being fired. She already have her weapon up but she isn't planning to start shooting up the place just yet. There could be all sort of justifications for firing a gun. Like purging a heretic or a xeno.
Through her helmet she eyes Zee, waiting for some sort of explanation or further hostile actions. Since in the second case she knew exactly what to do.

Jaahlyn is given a pretty cursory search; she's worked with the Guild before, and Raodan trusts her. He's aware he probably shouldn't, but he does. Nothing is taken from her, unless it looks like it might be a weapon; the bag of dust doesn't count. "I am not one of the Guildmasters. I'll have to contact them, get the council going. Can you wait? Maybe fifteen minutes. Can you tell me anything about the individual or group who sent you so I can pass it on and make sure the Guildmasters are informed?" He isn't part of the Guildmasters, though they are his immediate superiors. He doesn't know who they are, either. They mostly work through intermediaries and teleconferencing; they don't want their identities revealed by someone questioning their way up the ranks.

Raodan has picked up an old telephone and is starting to dial, however.

The woman behind the desk narrows her eyes towards Magtok, leaning forward suddenly. As she eyes him, she finishes off the rest of her glass in one swig. How disappointing, she'd been looking forward to meeting the Magtok she'd heard so much about. Not this quiet creature before her. "Not the type to beat ya gums? Nah, that don't read, honey." She chortles and clasps her hands together, fat fingers interlocked. "Ya think I don't know who you are? Mister bigshot? The boys tell me you don't love nothing' like the sound of your own voice, and yet." She shrugs, lips parted slightly. "That ain't the man I see." She shakes her head for a second before raising her brow. "Let's hope you still got it, huh?"

She sighs before retrieving a small journal from her desk and flitting through it. "Looks like we're needin' ya for both. An' there's heavy sugar in for ya if you do it right, honey."

"If ya don't... Well, you'll be left holdin' the bag, an' let's just say that Big Six ain't so nice as ol' Ms. Meggie when he's up in a lather."

    [Olympian Extractions - Investigation]

As the pair discuss their next move, the weather worsens.

Snow falls in bittercold curtains over the Thunderhead District, covering scores of abandoned warehouses, crumbling apartments, and struggling businesses in an expansive blanket of ice. The dark, overcast sky above flashes periodically as lightning streaks through the clouds, clumps of wet flakes drifting windlessly down onto the buildings below. A harsh wind howls through the labyrinthine streets of the district below, producing flurries of snow. Despite the snowstorm which threatens to worsen as time passes, throngs of haggard workers march ever onward towards the factory.

After several minutes spent following the nearest group of workers, the pair will find themselves before the factory. It appears as a sprawling, unfathomably expansive joint structure composed of numerous refineries and power plants whose dozens of smokestacks spew foul black smoke into the murky air above. Neon lights glare whilst overburdened powerlines spark and thrum, snowflakes melting on contact. Enormous pipes flow from the factory throughout the rest of skyside as veins would, spewing all manner of wasteful byproduct down onto the land below. Scores of trucks move to and from the lots outside the facility at all times, and though the sky is dark, the area surrounding the facility is bright as can be.

A huge electric fence surrounds the entire facility beyond. It's about another twenty-minute walk to the front gates.

    Spoiler: The Refinery
    Show

    [Petroldactyl - Meeting]

Hades leans back comfortably in his chair as Kelligan speaks, though in truth, his mind is elsewhere. This was silly. What was he thinking, imagining that seeing to something as menial as a business meeting would make him feel better? This could have been accomplished by any one of his assistants, and likely faster. He frowns. "Mm. Let's keep things on the level." Not like they were breaking any laws, and if they were, laws would simply change. "There's a building in town, barracks. I expect your people will find it suitable." At this point, his eyes had all but glazed over. Had Persephone really meant what she said, earlier?

He sighs and starts to rise up. "Afraid I've no time left to punch the bag. Have your people meet with mine. I expect my police force."

    [The Silken Whisper]

Larza, having helped herself to the bar below, is slightly more prepared for the gunshot than she would have been otherwise. Even still, more people had died around her today than she'd ever seen die, ever. She's fairly out of it. Once it becomes apparent that there was some sort of gunfight taking place, she scurries behind cover before shouting out.

    "Hey, what the hell?!"

    Run!

Run Eao lest you get trapped in this horrible place and cease to be!

She hits the door and goes tumbling through it. Unless she has some handy way to catch herself, she'll find that she just toppled out of a door that doesn't exist and into a dumpster completely filled to the brim with used packing peanuts. Even MORE peanuts will shortly come pouring out of a chute atop her.

    Huh.

    Well.

    That was weird.

    And kind of an adventure!

Having chewed up part of the landscape in that Dream Glade, Eao discover that her reliquary has filled up a little more! Always helpful. Also helpful is the fact that her memory of one of the robot's schemes has been restored. So that seems like a net win for her.

    [Silken Whisper]

"Okay that was completely uncalled for," Zee points out as she moves toward the no doubt terrified slave girl still chained to the bed. As with the others she'll destroy the rather awful psychic parasite growing inside her and then snap the chains holding her captive. "Sure the people taking advantage of the slaves here are pretty garbage but I don't think that justifies shooting them all willy nilly."

She seems more irritated than upset.

More like someone being annoyed that an NPC in a video game was killed for no good reason than witnessing a murder.

"That's the last person who got infected by the aliens. We're clear here, so that means less likely that we'll have to be dealing with a genestealer outbreak in the near future. The other two crew members of the shuttle are still nearby. One was heading off to talk with some local crime lords about a drug shipment and the other was looking for a hover-bike. Anyone have any idea where to start searching?"

    Zee does have one idea.

    She has a smart phone!

Though she isn't sure if 'where to find recreational substances in bulk' will necessarily give her useful directions. Maybe worth a shot?

"A charming place if there ever was one," Calm Reed observes with dry sarcasm. "Let us get to work. We will claim to be here to inspect workplace safety and efficacy. When they question us, we will act imperious and hurried, so that they might be inclined to let us have a run of the place just to get rid of us faster." She sums up the plan so Carlie can add or clarify something if she wishes.

Even though it lacks some charm, it is pretty impressive.

The electric fence, however, is a little frustrating. They've got to walk all around it. Luckily, that gives them even more time to discuss what they're doing.
Carlie nods. Yup, that all sounds perfect. "Based on what I can tell, the 'efficacy' line seems like it'd be really effective. Even if they only care about the safety of their employees on paper, they seem like the type to do anything for efficiency." So, claiming to be there to inspect safety while hinting that it's actually about efficacy...seems like it'd work.

    Motorbike, not hoverbike.

"He was threatening to shoot us and didn't want us to solve the problem. Plus, he's space-scum in a cheap brothel with a poor reputation." The gunslinger shrugs and finishes reloading her antique firearm before it disappears back under her coat.

This slave has an older genestealer growing inside her, and it takes a bit more of a push to destroy it. She's very grateful, however, especially when the chain is broken. She puts on his coat, and- unless Zee, Larza or Minerva take it first- grabs the blaster rifle.

"The Followers of Joy make drugs on a large scale. Could be them, they've got a base near here. Also not pleasant people, a chap called Shunt has been trying to wipe them out with some success. Made them a bit desperate; they'd be willing to deal with anyone, regardless of how dodgy, if the price was right." The gunslinger has less idea over where to find a motorbike, though.

"Of course, I'll send them right over." Kelligan replies, cutting straight to the chase. "...where you want them to meet? In these barracks? I can have a squad sent over by, uh, tomorrow. Unless you want them there sooner? Might also need a map and some directions too. This town can be a bit of a maze."

    [The Silken Whisper]

These followers of Joy sounded like proper heretical scum. It was her job to purge their kind anyway so this was just killing two xeno's with one shot. "Sounds like a lead." She remarks, largely ignoring the debate around the shooting they just witnessed.
She turns to Zee. "Just tell me once you're done and we'll set out right away." Looked like it would take longer to launch the attack against the rogue trader ship than planned. Oh well, best to take out the symptoms before taking out the disease in this case.

    Slave Street

"I'm in no rush, sir. I wouldn't mind waiting at all." The satyr replies with a smile with makes a deep polite nod. "Do you want me to sit somewhere or should I just stand here?"

"Yes, sit down. That would make things considerably easier." Raodan smiles, in the vain hope it would make him look nicer (it fails) as he stands up and leaves the office with a mobile phone in hand. He's making several calls to anonymous numbers and talking in a strange language; Valyrian, if Jaahlyn catches any, the Volantene dialect specifically. He leaves through a door in the back of the office; probably an apartment, or something.

He will, in fact, be gone for about fifteen minutes, leaving Jaahlyn in the security office alone, if she fancies poking about. There's the desk he was sat behind, a door behind that, several filing cabinets and a gun cabinet with a reinforced glass door.

Frankly it is quite possible Zee had forgotten the details. Though all of this nonsense has only spanned a few hours it has been WAY longer for her. One of the downsides to being really weird.

"Alright, the girls are all clean," Zee says as she stands to her feet and offers a hand for the slave girl to get up. "There's a pretty great chance that the bar owners are going to be upset about us freeing their slaves so we should probably go out the back door."

By 'back door' she means the hole the gene-stealer cultist had blasted through the wall.

    A perfect mode of egress!

Zee hops down without too much trouble and motions for the others to follow.

"If you're worried about the fall," she calls up. "Don't be afraid. I'll catch you."

Which she will! Thankfully the drop isn't that far and Zee will do a solid job of breaking the fall. No doubt the woman in power armor is wholly unconcerned with the jump.

Lord Magtok puts on his signature scowl, before floating to the grimy windows, where he gestures with a flick of his wrist towards the squalid, toiling masses beneath them. That same flick of the wrist also sends his drink tumbling to the ground, because apparently that thing about not putting on a show was a total lie.

"These aren't my people. This isn't my refinery. You want me to talk up a storm, you'll get it when I actually have a product to sell. Robot leg-breakers? GPS tracking chips sewn into employee badges, uniforms, skin? Giant smog-belching automatons to vaporize corporate spies with but a single incinerating stare? It all depends on how much the boss is willing to spend, what he wants to spend it on, and where he wants to be once I'm done here." Imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever. Are we just here to shine the shoe and tie the laces, or is there room for to imagine more for Olympian Extractions than just squeezing every last drop of blood from the stones unfortunate enough to work here?

The woman behind the desk chuckles and leans back, the chair shrieking and squealing beneath her weight. She barely reacts to the spilled drink. What's yet another stain? "God damn, ha." Now, this was the show she was wanting to see! "Attaboy." Ms. Meggie smacks her lips before opening a drawer and retrieving a pair of cigars and a lighter. She lights her own, while the second sits upon the table. "Don't you know, honey? You are the product." She takes a drag before gesturing towards the cyborg. "You've got the goods, the brains to do what M.H. needs doin'." Upon the factory floor, visible through the grimey window, a coal-choked worker falls to his knees.

"Come have a smoke, huh? We on the up and up, here." She flips the lighter on towards the other side of the desk. "More than brains, though - you got that fire." Another nasty little laugh. "He could smell it on the sweat of ya brow." At that, she points a fat finger upwards, to the ceiling. She closes her eyes and exhales as she does so. "Mm, smoke-eater still got it." Should Magtok glance back, she'll lean forward and set her hands upon the desk. "We're days away, honey. Days away. When it goes down, and it goes down right, ain't nobody in this town but company folk. Some ain't gonna like that." She'll offer to light Magtok's cigar, should he seem interested. "Gonna be a siege. They gonna scream, an' fight, an' bleed, and it ain't worth nothing."

"And you're gonna make it so. And when you do? We gonna get you a suit you ain't gotta magic up."

    [Olympian Extractions - Investigation]

All around the pair of investigators, exhausted workers clad in sweaty, coal-stained uniforms drag their feet through alleyways or atop sidewalks, glancing with suspicion towards them from time to time. This part of town is surprisingly well-populated, with several company stores flanked by numerous bars and small restaurants pushed up close to the factory, all of which bear upon neon signs some variation of the Olympian Extraction's company logo. Sprawling tenement homes and crumbling apartments rise up out of the ground at uneven heights, creating an asymmetrical skyline which resembles broken teeth.

Within the courtyard beyond the electric fence, a pair of watchtowers can be seen. At the front gates, four armed gunmen stare forward blankly, one of which whistles.

Once the two approach, a bored looking attendant waves from within a nearby booth next to the front gates.

    "Hey - hey, you two!"

    [Petroldactyl - Meeting]

Hades frowns. What had the green creature said? His mind was elsewhere.
He turns. "Listen. I - just... get it done."

"I don't need to tell you what will happen if you don't."

    [The Silken Whisper]

Once again, Larza was simply out of her element. This felt more like a warzone than a heist.
Oh, but then! Someone mentions some guy.

That's a name she knows! "Hey, w-wait? Shunt? I... I feel like I know that guy!"

Kelligan felt disrespected but he had been in this business long enough not the voice it or indeed as much as frown. This high-roller might act aloof and distracted but you never knew what they could snap up if you let your guard down.

Instead, he grins. "Right. We'll talk to your people and handle everything. Not a problem you need to worry about ever again." It was best to just tell them exactly what they wanted to hear so they could go back to whatever private matter that took up so much of their attention. When you were that rich people begged for your attention all the time so you had to prioritise and if there ever were too many problems you threw money at the least important ones until they went away.

    [The Silken Whisper]

Why were they freeing the slaves? Minerva felt like it ultimately wouldn't matter much in this city. Without the laws and structure they would just die on the streets instead.
But it wasn't her concern. If Zee wanted to free slaves she wasn't going to stop her and if that meant jumping out of a building then so be it.

"Yeah? Tell us all about him once we're out of here." She tells Larza and gestures for the xeno to follow as she makes the jump after Zee.

Hopefully the barmaid wasn't planning on catching her though. Both since she was awfully heavy in her armor and that she would take it as an insult. She was more than capable of dealing with a jump like this.

    [Slave Street Security Office]

Jaahlyn doesn't prod around, it wouldn't be polite and it wasn't like they were going to leave a stranger alone with sensitive information or material right? Might be some kind of test of her trustworthiness.
Therefore she simply sits there and waits for the whole 15 minutes without as much as getting up from her seat.

Well, if nothing else they might know how to fly a spaceship. And they have a spaceship that needs crew, don't they? Since Minerva and Zee are going around murdering everyone who flew it down here (except the tech-priestess, anyway).

After Minerva jumps, the first ex-slave, the one with the resemblance to the purple-haired gunslinger, will jump. Unlike the power-armoured Sororitas, they will all need Zee to catch them- except the gunslinger, who after a bit of rummaging finds a grappling pistol under her jacket and gets down that way.

They'd better leave quite quickly, though. The hole isn't really in the back of the building, and some of the girls are standing where they can see the hole.

    Slave Street Security Office

Fifteen minutes after he left, Raodan returns. "I have set up a meeting with the Guildmasters in the room next door, if you'd be so kind as to go through here?" He opens the door through which he had gone earlier, revealing a dark chamber lit by eight screens. Each screen shows a figure wearing robes and a mask concealing their identity, each mask and robe a different colour. Orange is worn by an obese person hooked up to some medical machinery. Pink is worn by a short person sat in an office. Green is worn by a sleek, feminine figure with large ears; almost like goblin ears, but the wrong shape and position, the hood tailored to hide them. Blue is worn by a figure visible only from the waist up, lounging on a chaise lounge. Purple is worn by a squat person with a beard moulded into their mask; the only decoration any mask has. Brown is worn by a figure in a soundproofed room, the robes marked with stains of soot and ash. Grey is worn by a slender figure in a dungeon. The final screen is blank a few moments, before someone dressed in yellow robes and a mask turn the camera linked to it on and turns to sit down. That figure has unusually long arms for their frame.

The last figure to arrive speaks. "Our head of security reports that you have a proposal of alliance?" He's pitched his voice differently, but it sounds like Raodan, and with his words some of the other figures start to nod in understanding.

[The Silken Whisper ==> Drug Bust]

Zee was freeing the slaves mostly because she finds the concept abhorrent and she was already helping them anyways. If she believes that people are, in fact, people then she's going to treat them like people. Once the infections are cleared then the immediate threat to the Nexus is over. Then it's just a matter of tying up loose ends and doing something about the ship in orbit.

Makes plenty of sense to her!

The slave girls are caught without too much trouble. Larza too, if she has trouble scrambling down on her own.

    Okay!

    Time to get outta here!

"Sounds like we've got a decent enough lead," Zee says, motioning for the gunslinger and goblin to lead the way. "We should start there since I imagine there are probably quite a few places to buy bikes in skyside."

Or maybe not? How popular are bike shops, anyway? That might be an easier thing for Zee to check herself. As they go Zee is going to pull out her magical black rectangle, pokes it a few times, and says. "Hey Googleplex, where are the nearest bike shops?"

A little chime follows with a synthesized voice. "Here are several bike shops near you."
