Default Curtain Call [5e Eberron] [IC]

    Curtain Call: A Sharn Adventure

    OOC Thread: Here
    Dice Rolls: Here

Green Masque Tavern, Smoky Towers, Middle Menthis
18th hour, Wir the 10th of Eyre, 998 YK

Each of you has received a request to meet the private investigator Max Murlock at the Green Masque Tavern this evening. As a middle ward, Middle Menthis receives less natural light than the upper wards, but the streets that criss-cross through the interior of its towers are moderately well lit with everburning lanterns. It is one of the most diverse wards in Sharn, and several of you cross paths with tattooed Talentan halflings riding fastieths and Shadow Marcher orcs wearing conical straw hats as you make your way to Smoky Towers. Shaena doesn't have to go far, since she currently lives in Middle Menthis.

    Spoiler: Middle Wards Map
    Show

Smoky Towers is an entertainment district filled with restaurants, taverns, concert venues, and a few theaters. A number of Cyrans dressed in Mourningwear--clothing in Cyran fashion, but entirely in black--can be seen in the district. Though somber, the quality of their clothes show that these Cyrans are of a higher class than the refugees in the camps of High Walls. True to its name, Smoky Towers is a bit dirtier than the other neighborhoods of Middle Menthis, but several of the restaurants look like they serve decent food. Unfortunately, the Green Masque Tavern is not one of them. The wooden sign outside displaying the eponymous tragedy mask is faded and chipped, and the paint looks more gray than green at this point. They do have a Ghallanda license framed on the wall behind the bar, but it's definitely no Gold Dragon Inn. The bar is filled with orcs, half-orcs, Khoravar half-elves, and black-clad Cyrans, all drinking heavily. A human woman dressed scantily in scarlet dances upon a small stage, accompanied by a half-orc drummer and a Khoravar fiddler and illuminated by several glaringly bright dancing lights in orb form. The bartender is a heavyset orc who gazes upon each customer with a deeply unimpressed expression.

All of you except for Dominic d'Orien know Max at least in passing, but she is nowhere to be seen. She has never been known for her punctuality, but this does seem a bit odd since she was the one who requested the meeting and her messages seemed quite urgent. The barkeep directs anyone who asks about Max to a rather dingy table in the corner with a "Reserved" sign upon it.

A young man who seems almost too clean to be in a place like this walks in and takes a look around. His dragonmark glows dimly in the somewhat darker tavern. It was nothing like his usual haunt, but a drink was usually a drink no matter where you went in Sharn. He walks over to the bartender and inquires about a glass of mead, and watches the spectacle on stage while he waits for his drink. When he gets it, he inquires about this Max character, and is shown the empty reserved corner. Not wanting to appear too haughty, he waits at the bar and listens totye performance while occasionally sipping at his drink and adjusting his spectacles.

A straw-haired young woman drops onto the stool next to Dominic, and nods appreciatively when the bartender puts a drink in front of her without being asked. She picks up the glass tumbler and swirls the liquid around a bit before taking a sip before looking to the paladin.

"Don't see much of your type on this level. Orien, right?" She indicates his dragonmark.

"Can't imagine what would bring you down here. Hiding from the parents?"

Dominic chuckles and his lips curl upward. She wasn't the first to mistake his youth for inexperience or a lack of wisdom, and she likely wouldn't be the last. He takes another sip from his drink before looking around as if appraising the decor once again before answering, "My parents and I get along quite well, though I imagine Mother wouldn't be fond of this place." He indulges the woman's curiosity, and replies, "I am here on business for House Orien. Someone reached out for help in a personal matter, and the House deemed it appropriate to extend their assistance, in the form of my cooperation." He waits a beat before returning the question in jest, "What about you, do truant officers often go searching bars and taverns for the youth spending their time on frivolities?"

Shaena knew the Green Masque, just as she knew most of the taverns, pubs, dives and other assorted places were people gathered in Middle Menthis, though it was not as familiar to her as some other haunts. She gave the bartender a friendly nod when he directed her to a table in the corner, where it seemed two other potential recruits for whatever this was going to be had already gathered.

She slid onto one of the free chairs, her chin coming up a little above the table itself, and looked around at the two humans seated around her, noting the openly exhibited Orien Dragonmark on the man and the woman who, at a glance, didn't appear affiliated with any organization. "Wotcher, all," she said cheerfully, flagging down a barmaid and pulling off a full pint from her tray before giving it a hearty sip. "We're all the Max party, then? She's calling on some big guns, I see." She said, glancing at the Dragonmark and then grinning up at Dominic. "Now I'm even more curious what all the fuss is about."

Falko walks into the Green Masque, standing tall and with a grim countenance. He wears a military uniform in Karrnathi colors. It is somewhat frayed at the edges, but he wears it proudly. He looks over the entire room, making note of everyone there, interested less in the entertainment and more in any potential threats. He scoffs at the Mourners and makes his way to the bartender. Murlock, he says. The orc nods at the table in the corner, where a halfling woman is already seated. Thank you, Falko says, before striding over and taking a seat himself at the table. He regards the halfling for a moment before keeping an eye on the rest of the patrons and looking for Max to appear.

The bartender gives Dominic a harder stare than most, taking in his Orien dragonmark and glasses and locally unusual standard of hygiene. He grumbles, "No mead. We got wine, beer, whiskey, and saak." Their limited selection seems to be oriented towards the practical purpose of getting the regulars inebriated, not towards serving the varied tastes of a more discerning class of clientele. The last alcohol listed is some sort of clear orcish liquor from the Shadow Marches that many of the orcs and half-orcs are downing shot after shot of.

Shaena has met Ikarios, the barkeep, before. He's a second generation Shadow Marcher, born in the Cassan Bridges district of Middle Menthis. He shows her a surprising level of friendliness, returning her nod, pointing out the two unfamiliar humans at the bar who are also waiting for Max, and directing her to the reserved table. The stretch of bar where Dominic and Jemma are sitting is adjacent to the table.

Falko notices that some of the orcish patrons have a rough look about them and are keeping an eye on the influx of strangers. The Cyrans return his dirty look, and a particularly pale Cyran wearing a breastplate turns from a neighboring table and challenges Falko in a soft voice, "What are you doing in Smoky Towers, Karrn?"

Somewhat late to the party, Simon walks into the tavern, blue eyes darting around the room assessing the area for threats, lingering on the shadows in the corners of the room before focusing in on the bartender. On first impression, he resembles a street tough with a short, not-quite military haircut, and slightly worn black leathers with the left glove noticeably longer than the right. "Here to see Murlock." he speaks quietly, but still audibly over the music from the entertainment. When the bartender points to the table with the halfling and the Karrnathi, he grimaces, "Where's Max? Thought she'd be here by now?"

Falko doesn't stand as the man approaches. Instead he continues to regard the other patrons in the room with a sort of stoic confidence. Go back and sit down boy, he says, never looking at the man.

"I don't think so," the Cyran replies haughtily, "You're in Cyran Avenger territory, and we don't take kindly to necrophiliacs and war criminals coming in here." A hush falls over the room, though the two musicians continue playing. One of the half-elven women across the room seems particularly interested in the exchange, but she tries to discretely keep her gaze averted. "I'll ask you one more time. What's your business here?"

Falko stands now to meet the Cyran face to face. He takes a measured breath and says dryly, Cyrans don't have territory anymore, and no one gives a rut what they take kindly to. Sit down boy, before you pick another fight you can't win.

Dominic changes his drink request to wine while keeping an eye on the brewing conflict between the Karnathi and the Cyran. It wasn't one he had much stakes in, but he also didn't feel too inclined to let a potential brawl escalate dangerously. Especially if the Cyran had more friends to bring to the party.

"Cyre will rise again," the Cyran declares. He briefly glances at the table where Shaena and Simon are sitting, then attempts to shove Falko to the ground. Falko's taunts prove prophetic, however, as this is another fight that he cannot win: Falko easily keeps his balance. A flush rises to his pale cheeks, but he stands his ground. His four drinking companions, all wearing chain mail shirts, are watching closely and seem ready to intervene, but make no move to do so.

It's at this exact moment that the door of the Green Masque swings open and Max Murlock finally enters with a worried look on her face. That look of worry intensifies as she takes in the standoff between Falko and the Cyran. "Hey guys, take it easy, okay?" she says quickly, trying to intervene. "Falko here's with me." The Cyran sneers and ignores her, keeping his eyes focused on the Karrn.

Warborn. That is what they called Falko in his youth, and still whispered behind his back before his family was driven from their home. Everyone in Khorvaire that isn't one of the long lived races was born during the War. But with Falko, they say the Eternal Battlefield lay over Eberron when he was birthed. The "walls" between Eberron and Shavarath were thin, and one bled over into the other. Violence spread through the keep that night and Maenrad had to order his men to lock everyone behind bars to keep them from killing each other.

Falko knows he was born on an auspicious day. He knows that conflict and war flows through his veins. He bristles with the anticipation of fighting this Cyran, this Cyran and his comrades sitting behind him. This peace is a farce; war will return to Khorvaire, and these Mourners will raise arms once again.

Max, Falko says, acknowledging her arrival. ****, he thinks to himself. He needs whatever job she has on offer. Not many people in Sharn want to rely on a Karrn for work, and Falko hasn't been able to make a lot of coin since setting foot here. He can't afford to jeopardize his chances with Max, or develop a worse reputation than he might already have.

Still, the Six take this arrogant Cyran. Without another word, Falko grabs the man to drag him outside.

Shaena took a long draught from her mug, glancing up first at the Karrnathi who came up to their booth and took a seat. She met his eyes and gave a slight nod, nothing the man's posture and expression. Not a cheery chap, not that most Karrnathi were. This was an interesting motley of people Max had called upon already, and she was getting ever more curious what it was Max had on her hands this time around. An Orien agent, a Karrnathi ex-soldier by the looks of him, herself and whatever the other human was. Curious and interesting.

Of course, things never went smooth in Sharn and Shaena let out a small sigh, as the Karrnathi immediately attracted attention from a bunch of Cyrans at a nearby table. She shifted somewhat in her seat, just in case matters escalated to the point she would have to jump to action, but otherwise said nothing. It wasn't her fight just yet.

Thankfully, Max came about just as things were heating up, and Shaena nodded at the purple-haired woman, relieved that they could be getting back to business. She had nothing against a good brawl, as long as she was a fair distance away, but not when there was money to be made or intel to be had.

Unfortunately, Max's presence seemed to deter neither of the men intent on establishing dominance, and Shaena sighed as the Karrnathi put his hands on the Cyran. Hoping against hope the Cyran's friends wouldn't want include them at the table in any of this, she turned to Max, "Max! Fancy seeing you here. Would you like to take a seat and tell us why we're here while our friend here, er, takes care of business?" She asked, glancing at the unfolding fracas, still hoping it could be contained to just the two of them duking it out and leaving the rest of them in peace.

Simon looks somewhat relieved when Max walks in, but still eyes the brewing fight between the Karrnathi and the Cyran warily. He heads over and joins the Halfling at the table, giving Max a nod and a questioning look while also making it apparent to the Avenger's friends that he's not stepping in to fight right now. He chooses to remain silent for now, waiting to see whether Max will let these two make fools of themselves without needing him to interfere.

Falko successfully grabs the Cyran by the arm, but he twists and breaks out of Falko's grasp, then raises his fists in a boxing stance. He wears armored rings over the knuckles on his left fist. "I've got this under control," he says to his companions with a smirk. They remain seated. The rest of the bar resumes drinking and laughing while watching this new source of entertainment. The orc bartender remains impassive, as ever.

Should Falko choose to use them, the bar is full of potential improvised weapons.

    Barstool: 1d4 bludgeoning
Bottle: 1d4 bludgeoning, 1d4 piercing if broken

Max sighs loudly and gives the two a wide berth as she heads to the bar and grabs a beer. Sliding into a seat at the table next to Shaena, she takes a big gulp of the beer. "Yeah, I've got enough problems without this nonsense. Jemma, Lord d'Orien, why don't you join us here at the table?" To Dominic, she adds, "I'm Max," and extends her hand to shake. She takes another drink and continues, "Lady Nora ir'Roole told me her husband's gone missing, and asked me to find him. She think he's been kidnapped or worse, but the Watch isn't taking his disappearance seriously."

She looks embarrassed and lowers her voice, eyeing the half-orcs and half-elves in the room warily, “That’s where you come in. You see... I’m not actually a private investigator, never got a Tharashk or Medani license, I just sort of... play one. Ladies love the aesthetic — *cough cough* anyway — the lady suspects he might have been slumming at a watering hole in Middle Dura when he was taken. I’ve had my run-ins with the law, so I can’t get within one hundred feet of the place before being chased off by the Watch."

She looks at the four of you gathered around the table and glances briefly at the fight going on between Falko and the Cyran, “Shaena, Simon, I know you've got...connections. Lord d'Orien, my old pal Orren said you're reliable and could help make sure Lord Drevan hasn't been bundled off on an Orien coach or lightning rail. Falko over there's muscle, I'll fill him in later. Jemma, I just ask that you make me look like the hero when you get to the bottom of this and write about it in the Inquisitive. I’ve got 50 galifars with your names on it if you can help me out here. What d’you say?”

"Not a truant officer," she says to Dominic, fishing out paper and pen as Max arrives, "chronicler."

She scribbles notes as Max lays out her shpiel. Much of it is in a shorthand that's almost gibberish to anyone else.

"Same as always, huh Murlock? Still, quite a lot of coin for a simple missing persons, and a rather big team. Some heavyweights even. What's the catch?"

Dominic accepts the offer to join his prospective employer and her other hires, taking his wine glass with him. It seemed this Max character wasn't phased by the issue of an impending brawl, so he decides the two men can solve this disagreement themselves.

He stays mostly silent and impassive as Max reveals the case at hand, and Dominic's left eyebrow raises at the proposed payment. "I must concur with the good madam, that is quite the sum for finding a man who has seemingly gone missing. I will provide as much aid as I can regardless of pay, but I must admit the sum implies quite the risk." While he waits for the first reactions of the others, he mulls over the name of the lady who instigated all this. Hadn't he heard the name ir'Roole before?

Max nods understandingly at Jemma and Dominic's questions, and replies, "Lady Nora is quite distraught, she thinks something bad has happened to Lord Drevan. It's been two whole days since he disappeared, and the Watch hasn't even done anything yet, they've just got a guard stationed at the bar. I told her to leave it to the Watch Inquisitives, but she insisted that I look into it personally. So now it's my reputation on the line, ya know? She keeps the money flowing to me, so I can afford to share with my good friends. But I can't afford to lose face. Time is of the essence, so I figured I'd call in all of you in the hopes that one of you would have the connections in the right places to figure this out."

The ir'Roole family isn't one that has had frequent dealings with House Orien or been the subject of much society gossip or news. Dominic may have drunk his wine a bit quickly, but their lack of infamy suggests that they're just one of many families of Brelish landed gentry who have gravitated from the countryside to Sharn in order to spend the fruit of their peasants' labor on the latest luxury goods. Had Dominic not manifested the Mark of Passage, he might well have stayed in Ardev with just such peasants.

Shaena listened intently as Max spoke, noting at the back of her mind that this woman Jemma was a Chronicler. Odd sort, those. She didn't quite understand the work of gathering information just to print it for everyone to see, but she couldn't deny they did some good work. Her mind focused on the business on hand, and she chewed on the tidbits Max provided.

After the others had asked their questions, she leaned forward. "I've got a question, Maxie. Any ideas why the Watch is being so lax on this? You'd think they'd take the disappearance of a whole Lord a bit more seriously. What do you think, could it be an inside job, or the Watch mugs being paid off?" There was always the possibility this Lady Nora was just overreacting and her husband was just on a particularly long bender. She hoped so, because that would mean a relatively easy 50 galifars coming her way. And if not...it never hurt to get on the good side of nobility, minor or not.

"It's hard to say," Max responds to Shaena in a weary tone of voice, "I've been wondering the same thing myself. On the one hand, you and I know just how corrupt those bastards are. On the other, some noble's wife saying 'he went drinking in Hareth's Folly and hasn't come back' isn't exactly compelling. They probably think he's passed out on dreamlily or having an affair. But," she adds, "Lady Nora assures me that this has never happened before. Lord Drevan often goes to the Half-Pint when he needs to be alone, he pays the owner for the keys for the night, then he always returns in the morning. So...are y'all in?"

The Cyran slips out of Falko's grasp and squares up with the Karrn, brandishing knuckle dusters on his left hand. Falko grabs a bottle off the bar and wields it like a club, taking a swing.

Not sure what the Initiative order is but I'm assuming we're waiting on Falko to go.

Falko grabs a half-empty bottle and swings it at the Cyran's head, splashing red wine everywhere like blood. The bottle connects with the would-be Avenger's temple, knocking him out cold. He slumps and hits the floor. Two of his compatriots leap to their feat and grab him under the arms, dragging him away. One of them glares at Falko and blusters, "You haven't seen the last of us, Karrn." The Cyrans leave with their unconscious friend, to harsh jeers and laughs from the rest of the tavern.

Max shakes her head. "Falko, you bloodthirsty maniac. You just can't not get into a fight, can you?" Falko and Max met at a Conqueror game that turned into a brawl, so she knows what she's talking about. She recaps the job offer, speaking to Falko in a semi-military staccato: "To catch you up, here's the job. Lord Drevan ir'Roole's been MIA for two days, last seen at the Half-Pint Tavern in Hareth's Folly. His wife wants him found. 50 galifars for the lot of you."

Falko watches the men drag their friend away before placing the bottle back on the bar. He wipes the wine that got on his jacket off with his hand as best he can, before coming back to the table. Max shakes her head. "Falko, you bloodthirsty maniac. You just can't not get into a fight, can you?" Falko and Max met at a Conqueror game that turned into a brawl, so she knows what she's talking about. Falko frowns, What did I miss? Any reason to think he is still alive?

Simon leans forward slightly at this, "Yes, what happens if we find him dead?"

Max frowns at the pessimistic questions and replies, "No body has turned up, so can't really assume either way. Hoping he is still alive, of course. But you'll get paid for finding him regardless." She pauses and looks around the table. "Do we have a deal, then?"

Shaena nodded thoughtfully and then smiled at Max. "Well, I'm in, of course. I'll head out to Hareth's Folly and see if there's anything to be found at this Half-Pint place. If nothing shakes up there, I'll start poking about some of my contacts who may know something." She declared, before finishing her drink with one last swig.

The halfling swung her legs around, ready to jump off the chair and get to work. She looked around at the assembled group. "Any of you lot want to tag along? Chronicler?" She asked, glancing at the woman. "If'n I understand what you do, those skills might come in handy here."
