I've been wanting to start/join a writing group for a while to take my writing to the next level, but I have been having no luck locally. SO, now I am considering a Skype-based group to meet once weekly/bi-weekly.

If anyone is interested, please talk to me. Even if it doesn't work out, it'd be great to know who is out there!

I've tried to get a couple going at one point or another.

The trouble I've found is that either everyone just wants to talk about their own stuff and there's no communal buy-in to helping others improve, or everyone is obsessively focused on being published and so the focus on the Craft itself gets lost.

I had a string of disappointing failures a few years and I stopped trying.

Well, getting published (or, rather, lifting up work to where it is publishable) is not unimportant.

Sorry to hear you had bad experiences. I was in one in college where everyone's work was given 15 minutes, lots of give and take.

The part in parentheses is the part that's important to me. I've had a few groups where it was the part preceding the parentheses that was most important to everyone. It's a subtle difference, maybe, but it generates a completely different vibe.

A good idea. However, once or twice a week, I don't think the effect will be very significant.

Biweekly seems a little too often. I've been part of a little writing group that's been meeting for about... man, a year and a half now that I think about it. We generally meet once every two weeks, sometimes more frequently, sometimes less. Gives us time to get some writing done so we have something to show for ourselves when we meet. We share our writing via Google Docs so we can read and leave comments prior to the meeting, and then we spend the meeting going over the comments (and going off on about a million tangents). Generally we'll spend an hour, hour and a half going over each person's work, get through fifteen pages or so of comments and suggestions for each.

It's a pretty small group, though, with a core of just three of us-- I don't know if you're looking to get a bigger group going, or how that might change the dynamic.

I did intend biweekly in the sense of every two weeks, not twice a week.

    biweekly
    /bʌɪˈwiːkli/

    1. done, produced, or occurring every two weeks or twice a week.
    "a biweekly bulletin"
Yeah, not the most useful word. Fortnightly is probably better, but does anyone outside the UK actually use the word fortnight?

Mostly in regards to that online game the kids are always talking about.

Pretty sure that one is intentionally misspelled. But, really neither here nor there for the thread.

Maybe if a writing group isn't feasible, I would still like to know what people are actually working on?

Myself, I just submitted my second interactive fiction story for publication to Hosted Games the day before yesterday. With that big project finally done (or at least mostly done, barring the occasional typo my beta readers let me know about), I think I might move away from IF for a bit and start on some children's books. Be fun to give my girls something that Daddy wrote.

Maybe a Discord would be better for a writing group? That way things can be asynchronous. Much less of a commitment, likely to entice more people.

That's not a bad idea. I've not much experience with discord, but I've seen good things about it.

Also, just to not be a hypocrite:
I am currently working on a novel about corruption and power struggle in a corporate depiction of anthropomorphized Death.

I promise I will not use the word anthropomorphized anywhere in the text :P

Oops, my bad. Every two weeks definitely seems reasonable.

I'd be down to join a little Discord group for writers if anybody gets one going.

Weckar, if you still are interested in joining or starting a writer's group locally, you might want to look at Meetup.com; I've seen meetups there dedicated to writers who want to give and get feedback.

Stuff I'm working on: currently about 85% of the way through a sequel to a novel-length sci-fi/dark fantasy story I finished about a year and a half ago.

I've been writing a web serial, mostly for my own amusement for a while and looking for people to critique it. So far the only person that has has been the WebFictionGuide guy assigned to review it, which was helpful, but it's only one guy. So a group like that could be nice.

I consider myself one, but I'm struggling to even start anything, to be honest. I have a bunch of files and ideas, worlds, and characters, its putting it all together and writing out the plot and story that is the problem.

the most story I've written out is my pokemon fan fiction, unfortunately, when the ideal is something more original.

It's getting harder and harder to tell, but I don't THINK they're a spambot. There's a long delay between posts, they stopped at 7 posts without going for the traditional 10 + Link. There's no questionable spam-site listed as their website in their profile.

    I think it's just a person.

We should ask them which pictures have the stop signs in them. See what happens.

When I first started freelance writing, I was a little lost when it came time to start.
I knew I wanted to be a full time freelance writer, but I didn’t know what I should do first.

I had a fair bit of success on Upwork when I first got started a few years ago, but that was when your Connects refilled for free every month. MediaBistro is another good site to add to the "batch applications" list along with Indeed.
