A Wizard class variant. The Polymath Wizard knows her entire collection of spells, except when she doesn't.
Replace these two Wizard class features:
Preparing and Casting Spells
You can prepare one spell at a time.
As an action while holding your spell book you may quickly read over a spell in your spellbook. When doing so, you can change your prepared spell to the one you read.
When you don't have time to do that, you can try to recall a different spell on the fly. Once per turn you can attempt to cast a spell that you don't have prepared, but is in your spellbook. Roll 1d20 and add your Intelligence modifier plus your Proficiency bonus against a DC of 20. On success, you can change the spell you have prepared to the new one and cast it immediately, following the usual rules for casting a spell. On a failure this does not consume your action.
You can use an arcane focus, or your spell book, as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.
