All he really needed are two customers.

You mean he stayed there ALL DAY holding a sign (that could just be placed next to her), bored to tears since he is unable to hear anything?

Uh, they're going to come back in the morning, right?
They just look for a place to stay?
Because that last panel kinda looks like they're leaving to continue their journey.

Even if they wanted more money for other stuff, the smart thing would have been for him to quick run over and get the book after getting enough, you know, to make sure this exact scenario didn't happen.

Sure, but they don't need both of them there to buy the book.

    That's what Celestia said.
That Snout should've gone buy the book once they had the money while the witch drips more ink.

    Oops, sorry.

No but dont you see, its funny because just when they thought the problem was solved... OOPSIE DOODLES! Another obstacle! Its funny! I bet they camp outside the city and when they wake up its gone, because roflmao wild edge, turns out the city is on the back of a giant turtle and it roams around! So much wacky.

I guess the "spend the whole day earning money for the book, so you don't have time to buy the book" gag was so funny, it has to be repeated.

That or they just randomly get the book.
I'm not sure which would be worse.

Also, I guess those two innkeepers are twins or a (very limited) shape shifter or something?

Well I knew the obstacles wouldnt stop, I didnt expect the people who were fine sleeping outdoors would spend the money they needed for their goal on a bed though. Thats an extra special level of dumb.

I KIND of understand that after days of traveling outside you want to sleep somewhere with a comfortable bed and maybe even a shower.
Shouldn't bother Snout, but the witch doesn't seem like the type who normally sleeps in caves.

Then again, I have to wonder why she doesn't have any money to begin with.
Maybe a different currency, but did they even check if there is a place to exchange it?
It certainly doesn't look like they checked the general value of the currency in town before deciding on the price for the ink thing.

Maybe it will just end with her printing fake money...

    Sweet mercyful gods my eyes.

We all get it. Snout doesn't own a pyjama.
There's no reason to show us every. single. time. he goes to sleep. Also, they're sleeping in a actual bed now. Are there no covers?

Oh well. As long as the witch doesn't complain.
Not that he could hear it.

So, that's still one naked lady page and, like, two dozen naked guy pages. I'm really starting to think that Mookie just likes drawing ding-a-lings.

Anyways, wanna take bets on how this dumb, pointless obstacle will be prolonged further than necessary? I'm betting that they try setting up their booth again, make even more money, but then they get confronted by a cop who fines them for not having a permit, putting them back to square one.

I'll bet Mookie gets tired of this specific obstacle, but the book will only be a lead to something else that will force them to remain in the city for awhile.

Maybe she just isn't his type?
Say he doesn't date outside his species or something.

Considering he looks pretty annoyed another option is that stuff like this happens often enough that all he can think is "Not this again...".

Sure, the first few times it happens might even be fun, but after a while it probably gets old.

I think it's more "completely naive and clueless", but there is a limit even for this.
These scenes are increasing in their level of awkwardness, and I really don't see any point to it.

Maybe? Though, considering the sorts of things a lot of humans are into, I'd still think there's some wiggle room there unless he's a hardcore racist, and his actions so far don't support such a notion.

I was under the impression that Snout basically lives his entire life alone except for trips to the library. I suppose, though, that I could be wrong. Perhaps if this comic had actually given us a "day in the life" to set up a status quo before trying to disrupt it, we'd have a clearer image of Snout's life.

Possibly, but the facial expression does not at all convey that. There is definitely some repulsion/resentment in that last panel. Perhaps it's just more bad Mookie art, but even if so, intent is definitely irrelevant here. It's one thing to expand upon the material in ways that the author hadn't anticipated, but it's another to outright contradict what is clearly there. I think whatever the answer here is, Snout is not into the ink witch and is merely tolerating her tendency to snuggle in bed.

I dont see that, I see him basically going "Oh god! What do I do?!" Then she strips off and he is going, "It just got worse!" Not because he doesnt want it but because having a woman curl up onto you without being sure if she means to or not could lead to a very unpleasant morning, her stripping off just makes it even worse. As a variation on this, say you are at a party and you go lie down. Some drunk girl stumbles into the room, flops on the bed, and passes out on top of you. You arent going to do anything inappropriate but if you cant get out from under her before she wakes up, the morning is going to get loud. Especially if she stripped down to her panties.

I don't know, if that's the case why did he strip naked right next to her in the first place?
If he isn't completely naive about all of this, I expect the cliched "You take the bed, I'm used to sleeping on the floor" only for her to fall down right next to him and basically replicate what just happened.

But whatever it is, Naive, uncomfortable, gay or just not interested, I think the consensus here is that the art and story contradicts whatever theory you go for.
And really, should we actually care?

Being in the same bed is one thing, cuddling up is another. It is also entirely possible he isnt used to contact like this and that makes him uncomfortable, it just strikes me as more of a panic over potential angry spell caster lady waking up in the morning.
