I really hope it's more like the vines using the corpse to communicate, or ANYTHING that doesn't involve DD.

If it will somehow be connected to DD, it will break the coincidence records, and that's saying a lot in this comic.

So far, this story has not had any extended sequences that were unconnected to the story. Even the long stretches of environment shots were still "technically" advancing the plot as it had Snout traveling to the next plot-relevant destination. It would be quite a change for this whole chapter to be just a pointless side quest.

    I don't think that was a zombie...

We could see something about how necromancy looks like after Jacob understood whatever he understood. But the vines don't really strike me as something he would have created after the DD finale, so it could be someone else building on his work.

The skin peeling off definitely sent back Jacob memories, however. I wonder if it's supposed to portray a substantially natural, if ugly, after-death phenomenon, or outright abnormality.

You know, it might be a good idea to check for pulse before picking him up, especially considering the lack of blood at this point.
Or better yet, just replace it with a better model with boobs!

Alternatively. One could assume that since Snout is picking him up, then there are visible signs of life.
Kinda wasted to check the pulse on someone breathing.

    Why should I assume so?

When I see someone who had vines pretty much inside his body and half of his skin torn off, the default assumption is that he is dead (apologize for using this movie as a reference).
If the comic wants to show something different, it needs to be in the text: Slight movement, trying to speak, actively checking his status or anything like that.
If Snout had background in medical skills that would also be fine as a shortcut since knowing he has the skills is indication enough.
But without it? I'll just assume he is carrying a corpse.

If that guy is still alive killing him might be a mercy...
Also there should be some reaction to getting ripped out of those vines and, you know, getting most of his snin torn off.
Sure, there's no soundeffects, on account of Snout being deaf, but seeing no reaction at all?
    Yeah, that's a ex-parrot. Human. Whatever.

Also, those vines around his neck look kinda like they've choked him.
    The woman too.

    Also, why is she naked?
Either flayed dude brought her down here- in which case questions. Disturbed questions.
Or she was the one who put him in the hole and then came down here. In which case more, just as disturbed questions.

    This is getting ridiculous.
If you can't tell a story without random convenient journal pages tossed around, then the story does not match your setting.

Also, fantasy version of wife by mail?

Okay, so this woman isn't either the one who lived in the hut nor his friend.
Somehow that only makes it worse.

Also, it means there's still someone around down here. And it's a crazy cultist type.

    Seriously, what a 180.
From "Those evil, lying vines tricked me into letting them eat my bestie" to "the most kind and benevolent vines are granting me a hot wife for the sacrifice of my best friend that random mongrel folk."
That's either insanity or mind control.

Worse, it seems the process didn't work.
Either cause the vines are lying and/or "require more life force to complete the ritual" or because Snout interrupted it.
Either way, guess who will be fed to the necromancer-weed next.

It doesnt even make sense! Why is this mystery being writing all this down, then leaving said pages in the most convenient spot for snout to get his exposition? If the woman was the person writing I could see the pages being left nearby as she wouldnt be leaving, but thats not whats happening here. I half expect the next page to be snout glimpsing a crazy man shuffling off deeper underground, writing furiously then tossing the complete page behind him as he goes.

While you're at it, here are some more journal related questions:

    - Who returned the journal back to the room upstairs, closing the hatch door and placing the rug over it?
    - If you intend on writing, why not take the journal itself?
    - Who takes blank pages and writing material in the state they were in on the last page of the journal?

Due to the location of the pages, I did, in fact, think that the woman was the one writing them, but when I got to the "wife" part, I realized that she was supposed to be the (reanimated?) wife, not the writer.

    New comic

I really hope those two aren't alive at this point. Or at least not in a state where they notice any of this.
Because even ignoring the fact that one of then got half his skin torn off Snout dragging them around like furniture can't be pleasant.
    Or dignified for that matter.

Also, wasn't there a third guy around somewhere?
    The vine cultist?
I wonder when that one will show up.

This kind of brought something into focus for me. What now? Lets assume he just rescued the only two victims here. They are not conscious and have to be carried to move, so what is his plan here? How does he help them, how does he escape with them, and where is he going to go? Will we get another comic or three of him slowly dragging the pair back to the mongrel town? Right now there is literally nothing but author fiat that will fix this situation snout is in.

Snout doesn't need to drag them back to town. This is the Wild Edge. He can just find a magic healing plant to revive them and then let them go on their way.

Which just proves my point. He has to rely on author fiat to fix this situation. As of now he is basically stuck with no clue whats wrong with these people, no clue how to fix it, no clue how to deal with the vines, he has nothing.

Best option is to keep them somewhere safe, go alone back to town and call a doctor.
Obviously that's not going to happen for both good and bad reasons.

BTW, I really want to add a thought bubble above Snout when he's pulling them out with "i now pronounce you husband and wife" along with his iconic annoyed look.

Agreed, how will this be settled? Will snout be able to get this guy to agree to write down whatever he has to say? Will snout screw up and treat him as a threat when for some reason he isnt? Im expecting the vines to contort themselves into english to tell us all about the Old Growth.

The way that guy looks he really shouldn't be running around.

    Though it makes me wonder...
    What is going on.
