Bananas are also pretty convenient, although I don't know if they are that easy in their natural version. Tangerines, too, require no instrument. Kaki fruits are very easy to open, but you get a lot of splatter. Figs, too, you can open with your hands.

I mean, most real life fruits are easier to eat than this, like apples, peaches, or grapes that you can just eat straight. There's only a couple that are particularly difficult, pineapples and coconuts, for instance. Fruit specifically evolved to be eaten so as to spread the seeds further than they can be carried by the wind.

From the way she was talking, both to the other guy and to Snout, I'm guessing she is capable of language, just not written one.
Also, unlike Snout she has low skill in wilderness lore.
If her mind/knowledge/personality is at least partially based on someone from the city, it's not surprising.

As for being naked, it's more attributed to Mookie's latest fetish rather than anything indicating about her personality.

I'm not sure if "naked people" really counts as a "fetish."

I didn't mean it in a sexual context, quite the opposite in this case.
From Mookie, I don't get the "fan service" vibe, it's more like "I feel like drawing it and will find any excuse to shove it in.

I don't have a general problem with nudity, it's just that like other artistic choices, when used so often it requires some sort of purpose or intent.
Without it it just feels weird.

It looked like something that had meaning, and it also makes sense since the vines do know the concept of language, but not necessarily understand writing.
Then again it could be just gibberish, hard to tell.

I guess at least part of it is because I prefer the alternative of her not being with a mind like a child.
Like mentioned earlier, I consider finding ways to communicate the best option to use this character, if she is able to talk and communicate, this is a limitation that they need and can overcome while they travel, but if it's an inability to communicate in any way it removes once again another option to actually treat being deaf as something meaningful to his story.

It's not one of these things I consider as "has to be my way, otherwise story is bad", I guess it can also go somewhere with other alternatives, but frankly I don't think Mookie is able to do anything good with the second alternative.

    Update

Never mind, seems like she can write, or at least imitate writing.
She's just got bad handwriting, something I can relate to.

Or maybe she doesn't really understand what she is doing other than imitation. Prepare for many pictures of objects, followed by write-talking in perfect grammar, Tarzan style.

Its possible she is just doing monkey see monkey do right now, or its also possible that she is a very fast learner. Should be interesting to see if she is really understanding this.

We also don't know if she can use language at all. She could have been just yelling. And now she has to learn Snout's language without sound.

In that case, it probably would have been easier to teach her a sign language.

No idea. Lack of worldbuilding and the choice of a zany setting mean that anything and its opposite could be the case.

I think the reason is a lot simpler: He already committed to the idea of writing.

That being said, I prefer it this way.
The journal is horrible for various reasons, and the coincidences with an ink related magic is just as bad, but I have a feeling it would have been worse with sign language.
Imagine the level of coincidences required for Snout to find enough people he can communicate with. The writing is a bit forced, but at least it makes sense that most people can write.
And all this for what? to show a panel of two people randomly moving their hands just so Snout can later summarize the conversation in his journal like it's already done?
    Thanks, but no thanks.

    Update

Can't help noticing that she is still naked without even an improvised leaf poncho

Unfortunately, it doesn't help Snout look empathic.

We are talking about the same guy that places fixing *his* cloths as a top priority in his journal, along with a knitting montage.
Same guy that just a few days ago experienced shame of walking naked in the street, and kindness of being given a simple piece of cloth in his situation.
The fact she doesn't know any better and that they are heading to a civilized city makes it even worse.

Also, I tried to imagine climbing a tree and crawling on a branch while being naked like she did, it still hurts.

That's also my point of view, I think that some basic underwear is almost universal for this reason, first and foremost as a protection.

EDIT: About the difficulties of telling a story where people communicate in sign language, that is doubtlessly a challenge, but it isn't insurmountable. However, it does require a lot of forethought.

You know, when I said her being naked all the time is a bit awkward, I did not mean it should be replaced with a different kind of awkward moment.

Does Snout have some sort of pheromones that makes women react to him while they are asleep?

Thats how it works, right? Seriously though, this is getting beyond strange. Im starting to think he wants to write comic porn but doesnt quite dare to go the last mile. His characters spend half the comic naked, and a quarter of it snuggling in bed while naked.

It gets more odd if you consider this post, essentially a statement of intentions towards nudity.

There’s going to be nudity. It’s going to be uncensored but I’m going to do my best to keep it “natural” instead of “explicit” or “gratuitous.”

To be fair, the ink witch wasn't disabled at that time.
She was just moving in her sleep while he slept naked next to her, or pretending to be asleep and hug him, or moving while he was asleep, and it doesn't make it any better...

Missed that post, but it really confirmed what I thought all along: I want to draw nudity, so I will shove it whenever and wherever I can.
Dude, I appreciate the attempt to make sex and nudity look natural, but context is still a thing.
That goes double when the characters in the story are not sure themselves when they are supposed to feel natural, ashamed, aroused or confused.
