I sure hope that's not what the Foglios intended. Both before and after Steelgarter has her meeting with Mr. Eyeball, Snackleford is shown to be working with Wooster as the latter investigates the murders. If it was him, he had to slip away from Wooster, take off his goggles (assuming he even could, before becoming a King) and be hanging around in his hidey-hole right when Steelgarter makes her unannounced visit. Plus Mr. Eyeball grumbles about how no one understands his Great Work, while Snackleford has every Spark in the dome enthusiastically assisting him with his abomination summoning.

My prediction is, said Great Work is somehow involved with England's sinking. Mr. Eyeball will turn out to be the guy who started it way back when, or his heir/follower/descendant.

Is he trying to get it cooked, or is he just using the soon-to-be-reanimated corpse as a table to eat off of?

Since the fish is directly under the electrode, he seems to be trying to fry it.

I thought he wanted to transmit fishdom to the slumbering corpse, to have more to eat. But I like fresh fish better

Loss? There's still two minutes left.
Enough time to finish eating for a Jäger.
And there are two working there way through the buffet, so they might even have time to spare.

Oh good grief ... the chef is a Spark, isn't he?

Oh, hang on. He's a Chef. There's no practical difference.

    Oh, and the puns...

The Foglios have said outside the comic that Sparks don't have to focus on "Science!".

And we've already seen that with the pie Spark of the circus or grandma's spark party planner.

Oh, I know that... The novel even has a footnote expanding/explaining the Brillat-Savarin comment. I was merely observing that from a behavioural point of view there doesn't appear to be that much difference between a Chef and a Spark.

No - Chefs do desserts too - as long as they have pretentious french names like Crème brûlée (prepared with a blowtorch, no less - Chef and Sparky!*) or are named after opera singers.

I know, but he called it a "pièce de résistance" which is French for "main dish" (and usually implies meat).

In English (as so often happens) the meaning of the borrowed phrase is slightly changed--it just means "the best part". See the second meaning here:

Err, the link you point says it's like in French either the principal dish of a meal or the best part of something (like an event) essentially a metaphor. Using it to mean the "best part of a meal" is just asking for confusion.

Be that as it may, I suspect most English-speaking audiences are going to get exactly what the Foglios are going for.

Given the amount of food in evidence, it's difficult to say what exactly is the piece in question.

Hopefully it isn't the ice sculpture, even though Agatha does look good as a mermaid.

I never said otherwise. I was making a joke about the fact that the chef used a technical (relative to his profession) term incorrectly.

He isn't French. He is English. Why would he give a pickled pig's foot about what the correct way to use the frog-eaters' language is?

Is he? That moustache looks a bit gallic to me...

In any case, he needs to understand French so he knows what to call his pièce de résistance when he writes the menu. Otherwise he will have to write a list of meals in English, at which point he might as well go and become a cook in a transport cafe.

(Cafe, Chef and Menu all derive from French, as does much of the terminology of cuisine. Cook comes from Latin. Also while I haven't eaten Cuisses de Grenouille I have had Escargots à la Bourguignonne, and rather enjoyed them, unrepentant rosbif that I am...)

Eh, the French swiped half of it from the Italians anyway. Except for the patisseries, those come from Vienna (look up the history of the croissant sometime).

All I know it that those are monster eggs around the ice-thingy.
The question is from which franchise.

    Pokémon?
    Digimon?
    Monster Hunter?
