And definately not the explanation I expected: so if Eugene would have tried to defeat Xykon it would be no obstacle for entering the paradise that originally he swore that he would not rest in this life or any other until horrible vengeance was enacted on Xykon?

What if not all of Roy's deaths are in pursuit of the Oath? Do the celestials check each one? Or is Roy now off the hook, and can devote his life to something else?

Going by the dialog, I'd surmise he is indeed off the hook. Though I suspect that he'll go after Xykon anyway.
