No, by custard I mean the yellow stuff that goes with every desert. Also Yorkshire puddings are amazing if, and only if, you make the batter yourself and serve them straight from the oven.

And thanks, I'll let you know if I get the chance to cook something like it. I need to practice my plum sauce anyway.

I have never made a Yorkshire pudding, but popovers are very nearly the same (butter instead of beef drippings) and quite good.

The real question with yorkshire puddings is if you prefer bacon grease or a beef roast drippings to prep the pan.
Personally I'm a fan of beef dripping myself.

Having had to deal with customs and various other civil service types in many nations. I'd say the Brits are right up near the top with Aussies and Canucks in terms of being civil. Some of the more authoritarian nation's bureaucrats make the term of uncivil seem ... rich with British understatement. So hopefully AnonWiz can join a grand tradition of POLITELY telling people they need eight more forms, three in triplicate {Scrubbed} before they can pass through to the next Vogon inspired station in their life.

Most popovers seem to call for buttered pans...vs the light meatiness of a yorkshire you get from the beef drippings. As bacon lends a similar meat flavor I'd call them closer to Yorkshires than popovers.

On other hand, when I do ask for my full name to be used it's somewhat rude, and I tend towards formal speech anyway (go speech impediment, the therapy is still influencing my words and accent to this day).

I have previously remarked that my full name being used is a sign of a close friend.

I know that like =/= fancy (not that it matters, I feel like I'm the only single person at work anyway), but as I said 'I'm willing to chat' and 'you don't make me want grab a knife' are two very different things.

Oh, sure, it's just grating because I've has to fight against this my entire life. About three people have permission to shorten my name, one of them due to trouble with the 'ct' sound at the end, and the fact that my preferences are casually disregarded in almost every situation makes me angry.

Some people go by diminutives. I don't. And yet apparently for something 'so minor' my preferences don't matter.

It is kind of hardline, so don't do it if you don't really care, but if you don't react to someone's call, they will change to calling you something you will respond to pretty quickly, unless they are really invested in it, and who cares that much about someone else's name?

While my boss does have the last word, it's still rude to ignore my preferences. Other people get their full names, and I'm not asking to be called something unprofessional, so in what way is it unreasonable to ask to be called by my name?

I have made it fairly clear that professionally I want to go by my full name, and yet I'm railroaded into using a shorter version. Especially as others get the courtesy of their full name, it feels like 'you get your preferred name if I like you'.

It's also a useful screening tool, weirdly. Going by what somebody calls me I can tell if they're actually going to listen to me. It works shockingly well.
