Re: SZbNAhL's Similarly Sibilant (if unpronouncable) Random Banter #223
I mean, I thought of that, but they're still only pseudo-Roman aesthetic. Like, sure, the Imperium has that vague Latin-Roman eagle-esque aesthetic going on, but, like, I wouldn't really call their culture and everything that. In Ultramar perhaps, but that's still only a microcosm of what the Imperium is (which is much, much more Gothic in aesthetic), and there really isn't any focus on the Romanesque parts at all. Sure, 30k has the Legions and all, which technically fits the letter of the request, but I don't really think that it counts that much towards the intent.

Re: SZbNAhL's Similarly Sibilant (if unpronouncable) Random Banter #223
Yesterday I had a first-aid/emergency response formation (which basically amounts to ‘how not to make the situation worse and call the fire department’) and since I get a four days week-end I just went to a theater that played 1973 comedy classic Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob starring Louis de Funès. This is a good week.

Re: SZbNAhL's Similarly Sibilant (if unpronouncable) Random Banter #223
...there are people who do Last Unicorn covers? I should probably poke suspiciously at that. (I have, however, once heard America sing The Last Unicorn at one of their concerts, which I was not expecting. I knew they'd performed the music for the movie, but didn't realize that it would be something they'd actually play anything from in concert. They don't perform it at every one of their concerts, but they did at one of the several of theirs I've been to and I guess now I'm out as a Double Nerd for both that movie and that band.)
Anyway, I highly recommend The Last Unicorn movie, The Last Unicorn book (the author wrote the screenplay for the movie so it's a pretty thoughtful adaptation), other books by Peter S. Beagle, seeing America in concert, seeing Peter S. Beagle in person, seeing Peter S. Beagle in concert, and pretty much anything else vaguely adjacent, apparently.
As for the school government thread, I went to Weird Hippie High School (actually a k-12 school). We had a small steering committee open to all but regularly attended by about 3-5 people, and school-wide Open Forums to debate and discuss issues. Before that, I went to a different, smaller Hippie 6-12 school that had weekly all-school meetings with a rotating student chair using Robert's Rules of Order and various subcommittees as voted on by the general meeting. Small Hippie 6-12 school actually gave quite a bit of budgetary power to the all-school meetings and I remember speaking in front of the school when we needed money for electronics parts for projects and such as well as serving on subcommittees. (This was good preparation for SF fandom later.)
In other news, I've decided that not only is my house not childproof, my house is childcounterexample. My cousin brought her two little kids over today and it's amazing the things a 3 and 4 year old will immediately find and how few of them were things that were a good idea for them to be into. I like the kids, and they're within reason for age-appropriate behavior, but I'm glad we quickly left for a park with a big playground instead. (I let them play the piano, which kept them occupied for a while, but I didn't really have a lot else in my living room that was neither dangerous nor fragile, yet interesting to small children.)

Kenny Loggins did an exceptional cover of The Last Unicorn.

My family once had a computer with over 600 viruses, 4 of which were on the motherboard.
We're all more careful now.
I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

You know what I just had a sudden wage of nostalgia for? Chucklevision and Bodger and Badger.
I mean, even though it makes me sad I understand the nostalgia for Chucklevision, but Bodger and Badger? I don't remember that show being good, all I remember is the theme song and Badger puppet.

That is exactly the same amount as I remember of Bodger and Badger (other than that they often threw around some sort of corn starch that they adamantly insisted was mashed potato for some reason).
I also vaguely remember a programme called Radio Roo, but don't even remember the puppet from that, just the theme song. I just looked it up to make sure it really existed, and the cast list refers to "Richard Braine as the man from MI5", which raises multiple questions.

Because eventful knows Badger loves MASHED POTATO!
I has honestly utterly forgotten about that bit.

The other half seemed to be either the Chuckle Brothers or **** and Dom (probably in da bungalow).

The thing is that I love(d) Sooty, and I loved a lot of the shows, but I hated Basil Brush with a passion. I can't for the life of me remember why.
Anyway, izzy wizzy let's get busy (do you think we've confused the Americans yet?)
I never knew you felt so strongly about Richard McCourt.

If I have to read about the Superb Owl they give to their best Rugby players, they can read up on what proper television looks like.
I forgot the board would censor that. I want to go back and fix it, because that is how they're known (it's not 'Richard and Dom in da Bungalow'), another part of me thinks it's funnier to leave it

Never got that. Surely if you were going to associate a bird with Rugby you'd pick the Ostrich?
I still don't get the armour though. Are they really so worried that their jerseys going to be damaged? Something something concussion.
It's clear anti-British bias. They won't let us discuss S****horpe, Penistone, Sma****...
Edit: I apologise, we are apparently allowed to say penis.
Unfortunately I don't know any place names that include vagina. Guess I'll have to go over to Google Maps after work.

Re: SZbNAhL's Similarly Sibilant (if unpronouncable) Random Banter #223
So do I, so do I.
But that's why it feels sad. Hard to watch Chucklevision anymore knowing they these days it world just be
"To me."
"To you."
"To me."
"To you."
And this is where I hour I've remembered which Chuckle says what correctly. But I remember what my Facebook feed was like when Barry died.

Re: SZbNAhL's Similarly Sibilant (if unpronouncable) Random Banter #223
In what context and for what purpose? Both "knight" and "paladin" are terms that have had various meanings over the years though there is genrally a significant aount of overlap.
"Paladin" was originally coined to refer to the Twelve Peers of Charlemagne, semi-historical knights that would serve as his champions/captains/bodyguards in a "Knight of the Round Table" kind of way.
From that it evolved to mean "right-hand man/men of an emperor" and by way of DnD and WarCraft "magical holy warrior".
"Knight", meanwhile was originally a social class (rich enough to own a horse but not a noble) then refered to members of an order of fighters within the nobility that had sworn some kind of oath. Then the idea of the knight (errant) became an archetype of a righteous warrior vainquisher of evil (the so-called knight in shining armor) while the title remained but is generally not much more than something fancy to put on a business card.
So I would say that there is significant overlap between the two in the modern pop culture meaning of both words: being just warriors who may or may not have a strict code of conduct, but the paladin is often expected to have magic powers and/or be religious when the knight isn't.
Also, see how Miko Miyazaki of OOTS-fame is a both a samurai (which is the japanese equivalent of a knight) and a paladin.Last edited by Fyraltari; 2019-08-17 at 08:05 PM.
