    Default [3.5] Nurturing the Wu Jen Spell List

    In a this thread, the subject of the Wu Jen spell list came up, and was eloquently described by Bohandas:

    So, the point of this thread is to nurture that neglected spell list. What spells from other splats could be on the Wu Jen list?

    Spell compendium, in the "Other Spellcasting Classes" section, states:

    Based on that, we can pretty easily make a list of spells that could be on the Wu Jen list.

    Even in the PHB, not all spells fitting the Wu Jen elemental themes are on the list, and of course many non-elemental spells are.

    In this WotC web article, Wu jen are described as focusing on personal power and self improvement. This is reflected in the official spell list, which contains many personal buffs.

    This is intended to call attention to splatbook spells that fit the elemental theme, as well as the non-elemental spells that fit to the flavour of the official Wu Jen list. I'm not suggesting all of these spells should be added, but they are fitting to the theme, so are potential spells to be added. Players of Wu Jen characters should pick those they feel fit their character the most, and ask their DM, who will of course ultimately have to decide which are appropriate for their campaign.

    the Level-By-Level Spell list is moved to here.


    Are there other spells that are outside that advice in Spell Compendium that would really fit the Wu Jen flavour?
    Please comment on whether you think of my choices and whether I missed something.

    I'll add more as I have time...
    But I'd love to see what you think of this, and maybe you've already done this yourselves....

    EDIT: Added a few SpC spells pointed out by Elves. A few deletions also from Elves.
    EDIT2: Added Sandstrom and Stormwrack, Frostburn, Fiendish Codexes, Exemplars of Evil
    EDIT3: Rewording the purpose of the list based on input from Biggus. Instead of "These should be on the Wu Jen List", its now "These are potential spells to add, ask your DM."
    EDIT4: Starting to add explanations for why some spells are listed (mostly the non-elemental spells) This is a work in progress. Add WotC Web content section.
    EDIT5: Added entries from HillGiant's list, foundhere.

    Wow, thanks for all the hard work. The only potential problem I can see is that earth, water and fire get roughly twice as many new spells as wood and metal. They don't all get exactly the same number in CArc, but the differences aren't this dramatic.

    These are the kinds of things that are hard to pick out from a quick glance at the spell... So if anyone has any more similar comments, it would be well appreciated!

    I noticed that as well. I think it is hard to even it out, without inventing more metal and wood spells. I was fairly generous with "wood", meaning almost any sort of vegetation. I left out spore field from Complete Scoundrel. I love that spell, but fungi are just too far from Wood, IMHO. But would love to hear everyone else's thoughts.

    Will try to get a couple more splat books in today, assuming real life doesn't intervene. Hmmm, maybe there's a spell that can help with that.

    If you look at the Wu Jen spell list in Complete Arcane, they don't get all the possible spells for a given element: the fire list doesn't have Burning Hands or Flame Arrow on it for example. So my suggestion is just to slightly change the wording of your OP from spells which should be on the Wu Jen spell list to spells to choose from when extending it (and maybe also add a note about the unevenness of the lists) and leave it to DMs to decide what spells they want to allow.

    Hellfire (Storm) shouldn’t be in the list. They deal untyped “hellfire” damage, not fire. They are also exclusive to a single domain.

    Aside from that, a good chunk of the existing WJ list seems to revolve around personal-only buffs. Is that a thing to look into?

    That's a good point. I will add some text to that effect in the OP.

    Yes, man wood spells are druid. I haven't been limiting the list to arcane only, so there are plenty of druid spells on there.

    You've already done the full list so if you do a by level list you should post both lists. (I recommend the full list be in a spoiler and subspoilered by source, while the by-level list, made for use in play, should not be subdivided by source, either ignoring source or having it in brackets eg (SpC)).
