(IC) New Bedford by Night: WtF II

[Bennosuke]

Ciara looks from Solomon to Bear, then to the others, and hesitantly asks, "Is Pequad the ship spirit you were talking about? Has anyone even been in to check on it in the last few days?" Then she looks back to Bear and anxiously asks, "Would that mean removing the protection ruins we have up here? It would make us all very vulnerable."

E frowns at this and says, "So what? I like the idea, take them out on our territory! Set up traps and hit them when they aren't expecting it."

There is a great rustling sound punctuated by the snapping of incinerated tree trunks as the spirit steps forward. "I am Immovable Hunter," the spirit declares as its massive form finally comes into view. The thing is about fifteen feet tall, and in the form of an upright bear, it's massive lumbering arms tipped with curled aqualine claws. It's fur is a wild, almost luminescent ghost white, it's muzzle bristling with oversized sharp teeth. "You have come upon my den Uratha called Bear," the Unamatha Azim says, though its red eyes have gone from a furious warning to placid curiosity.

[Daishain]

Bear frowns, visions of Ciara getting attacked in some motel room dancing in his head, "Even after Obliterates is dealt with, the hordes will remain, at least for a time. If we are vulnerable, having sacrificed our shelter, the rats would have a much easier time dealing us the same fate as our predecessors, and then go right back to what they were up to, if without their king."

"How quickly could we get wards of this sort up on a new place for us to use as our shelter?"

Bear nods in greeting, "Immovable Hunter, it is good to know you. Thank you for tolerating my intrusion. I have been seeking a great spirit of your nature, to learn from."

The eyes of the wolf blooded turn to Blaze.

The massive bear spirit tilts its head to the side comically, as if confused, or considering an odd thought. Then its head rights, its massive ears twitch, and its lips turn up in a toothy grin. "You wish to learn from me Uratha," it asks with a chuckle, "What is it that you wish to learn?"

"I am my pack's warrior and protector, they look to me to shield them from the troubles we face. I am strong, but I could be stronger. I stand firm, but I have felt myself grow weak."

"My pack faces a threat greater than we have ever known, and my mate is now pregnant with my first child. I will stand in their defense, and die facing our foes, but I do not know if such defiance will be enough as I am. And so, I am here, hoping to learn more of the ways of strength and endurance from a paragon of both."

[Erulasto]

Kara snatched another beer from the fridge and handed it to E with a sly grin. "When you're dealing with the **** we deal with, it's never to early."

"I'm not sure it'll come this far...and I'm not sure I like the idea of it dripping all over my stuff. What time do the sprinkler systems for the parks kick on here? Could we lure it to like...that golf course near the hospital? Try and get the tannis root into the sprinkler system, y'know?"

The massive bear spirit's head bobs up and down in a lackadaisical nod. "I see," Immovable Hunter says, its red eyes narrowing as if deep in contemplation, "you mean the Beshilu, do you not? They are undoubtedly a blight on these lands that have been allowed to spread too far. These lands have grown barren due to their growing rot, and the hunt has become harder and harder. What do you propose then, Uratha Bear; that we form some sort of alliance?" This is said with a child like curiosity, underscored only by the spirits maw filled with overgrown fangs that could possibly sever a Gauru's arm from the shoulder.

[Ladorak]

Solo nods 'I like it, empty at night, close to a Locus. The sprinklers are an interesting idea. But it's very open, nothing to stop it fleeing.'

[Erulasto]

”True…” Kara said, mulling over the issue of trying to stop it from fleeing. ”I mean…if we hit it with the sprinklers early enough it might weaken it to the point where even if it runs…like...we could down it before it gets too far? Maybe...some bear traps. Or...like...fishing harpoons? Somehow...tie it down, y'know?"

[Daishain]

Bear shrugs, "Think we could use a couple harpoon guns? Its a fishing town, there are bound to be plenty. Use those to chain it down a bit, go ahead and smear the harpoon tips with some of the bane while we're at it. We'll probably need a lot more than is practical to truly tie that thing down, but they might be enough to slow the thing."

Bear nods to the spirit, "There is the Beshilu, and then there is the threat that drove the Beshilu inland. We must face both eventually, but we are closer to dealing with the rats. As to an alliance, would you be willing to contemplate such a thing?"

[Erulasto]

"I wonder if the Reveler has any..like...gifts or tricks it could teach us in that regard. Maybe some vines or something. I dunno. That might take more time than we really have...."

[Bennosuke]

As if summoned by magic, the Reveler's voice echoes at the volume of a whisper in the warehouse, "I have many tricks my dear, but I am afraid that I may not be strong enough to contain such a powerful spirit. I witnessed the strength of He Who Obliterates Breathing with you in the tunnels. It must truly be one of the oldest spirit in these lands. However, when I am called upon, I shall do what I can to assist the Anchor Wolves in their battle with this plague monster."

The spirit's eyes seem to widen in confusion at Bear's remark about another threat. But disregarding this Immovable Hunter says, "Your offer intrigues me Uratha. I shall ponder such an alliance, and shall take into consideration any offers you may have to sweeten the deal." With this the bear spirit grins again, its long pink tongue lapping hungrily against its massive pointed teeth.

'A harpoon would be appropriate, but it wouldn't work. We'd have to attach the other end to something, all of us pulling together, even if we added the Winnebago, wouldn't slow it down. He Who Obliterates Breathing would yank us, or anything we tie it to, straight up into the air with one tentacle shake.
'Maybe we would have more success in the hisil, if we could bring one of those labyrinth walls down on it, that might slow it down, for a moment.'

[Thundercracker]

Blaze

"Trapping this thing out here is going to be tough because it'll be able to run to the spirit world, but it's going to be more powerful on the Hisil," Blaze said, "maybe what we can do is lure it into a fight here, near a locus, and have a trap set up on the other side so when it runs through it's already injured. The bane will injure it if we can land it on the spirit, or coat weapons with it, but I'm thinking on top of that, we should be soaking our claws and jaws in the stuff. Maybe we spread it around on the ground in the Hisil when it tries to run."

"We're going to have to make sure it's dead, too, probably by dumping a few buckets of bane on its form after it's down for the count," Blaze added.

[Erulasto]

”That’s a lot of tannis root extract we’re going to need…” Kara muttered to herself, before taking another swig of her beer. ”But I do like the idea of starting by a locus and then springing the ambush once it’s tried to run.”

[Ladorak]

Solo smiled quietly, it was good, the day before the hunt, preparation and coordination. The thrill of killing Hosts had gotten stale several hundred rats ago and he lacked Kara's ability to push past all the distraction and focus on the music. He relished these quiet moments of companionship before the resumption of chaos. Then again, what he really missed was the quiet of nature. He would never again feel comfortable living among people. He thought of his old territory and one memory caught his attention; Mountain forest, early winter, cold crisp air. Belly full, humanity forgotten many moons ago. A predator chases a rabbit through a field of lavender. An old memory stirred an even older one, something learnt from a book several lives ago 'They used lavender in those old plague masks, put it in the beak, thought it would stop the plague getting in through their nostrils.
'Blaze, if we bring that thing into the Flesh, do you think a field of lavender would... count as it's Bane?'

“Couldn’t hurt,” Blaze replied.

I guess I will allow you all to discuss a little more. It sounds like you're finalizing a plan? For what its worth my first shift went well, but I will be working 12 hour shifts till Wednesday, so this may affect my post rate... though maybe not.

[Ladorak]

'Good. Maybe this will not be...' He caught himself, such thoughts were not for the wolfbloods 'Lavander grows in large fields, tends to choke out the plants around it, so fields full of the stuff. We can cut or burn trails... No, a maze, a hundred twists and turns and dead ends.'

[Daishain]

Bear nods, "Sounds good. Its analogue in the hisil shouldn't be very pleasant for Obliterates either. Does anyone know of such a field?"

Bear spreads his arms, "I can offer my services in dealing with threats to your territory perhaps? I certainly do not doubt that you can face any such things yourself, but it can be difficult chasing intruders down on one's own."

[Erulasto]

"We live in the twenty-first century, Bear. Fields of lavender are a single Google search away!" Kara chirped and pulled Atant from her bag. After a quick selfie, she popped open a web browser and ran a search for anything that would suit their purposes. Kara was paying close attention to Yelp reviews and other touristy review sites.

Though Kara's search doesn't bring up any untouched "fields of lavender", it does bring up a number of florists and garden stores where lavender can be purchased.

"I did not think that it was great spirit, I merely thought that there might be some things that are elusive, intrusive, and unwilling to face you in battle in the first place and that forcing such a confrontation might be to your interest. But if the offer is not to your liking, is there anything else I might provide?"

With a little more work Anna is able to locate a nearby nursery that is actively wholesaling large numbers of lavender plants for the best price.

The spirit's black lips curl back even further in an ear to ear grin that exposes almost all of its yellowed jagged teeth. "Honey?" the spirit suggests merrily, a bead of viscous saliva collecting at the corner of its toothy mouth, "Lots of honey?"

Bear grins in return, "I think that can be arranged. In the short run I can just buy a steady supply of honey for you. Might be expensive but I'm not spending much on other things anyways. In the long run we'll be setting up a safe den for our pack anyways, I believe I could talk the others into an apiary. I'd always kind of wanted to try making mead anyways, I think you might like that stuff as well. Its honey sweet, but with a kick. Do we have an accord?"

[Bennosuke]

The towering bear spirit offers a satisfied grin and says, "Bring me the honey and I would say we do." The bead of saliva grows, pulled down by its weight till it drops and creates a damp spot of the spirit's massive brown pelt.

“Here’s another one,” Blaze said, highlighting the nursery,” we’d have to buy them though.”

[Erulasto]

”Sorry Solo. I’m sure you’d be able to find them…like…pretty easily? And as much as I love the whole hunter look, I figured we were on a time crunch, y’know?” Kara said while laying a hand on Solo’s shoulder with a small smile.

”Good job.” She said to Blaze. ”I’m sure we could buy a bunch without too much trouble. How expensive can flowers be, like…really…”

'Very' said Solo dryly 'It was only an idea, one we may revisit when we have a better idea of where to take this thing. Bear, what say we get some breakfast and then head out?'
