Default Attack of the Swarm. Episode # 1 Fate of the Fifth [OOC]

5th Battalion drafts Suskillon citizenry to combat Swarm Invasion!
It has been 6 months since the Swarm first touched down on Suskillon in a bloody conflict named the Battle at Stone Sea. After the Swarm punched through the planet’s aerial and orbital defenses, its components landed near the Stone Sea, a large freshwater lake surrounding a dormant volcano. The Fifth Battalion of the Suskillon Defense Force (SDF) was closest to the site of contact and held the Swarm back long enough for the SDF to mobilize other battalions to the area. Stories of the battle have already reached near-mythical heights, as most members of the Fifth Battalion were killed in glorious, terrible combat.

Since then, the SDF has fought a losing battle against the Swarm. Though Suskillon is a friendly trading partner with the Pact Worlds, the planet’s government has yet to officially request aid, with many afraid that the Pact Worlds will claim their planet as a protectorate in “payment” for such help. In a desperate plea to maintain ranks in the face of our enemy's horrific onslaught, the SDF is now calling up all Civilian Defense Reserves in an effort to bolster their forces and defend our home from the invading swarm.

Standing before you is a monster of a Vesk, standing easily eight & a half feet tall, almost six feet wide at the shoulder, his scales a pattern of deep forest green, and vibrant emerald green, criss crossed with various duelling scars earned during his time in the Veskarium. His right eye has been replaced my a Ziess-Ikon cybernetic optical module, and it tracks the movement of the anxious crowd of which you are a part. “I am THE LAST commanding officer in the 5th, Jaldamarrak, and I was killing Swarm before you were clutching your mother’s tails." He paced back and forth in front of the raw, green, recruits, "I know more about this enemy than every soft-skin general in this system," he growled, "and I know for a fact we are losing this war." A large taloned hand tapped a data pad, scrolling through a list of names, many faces were crossed off with a red KIA icon. "Some of you are from other units and are being called in to replace those soldiers lost on the ground during, what the media has now dubbed, the Battle of the Stone Sea. Some of you are members of the Civilian Defense Reserves, called up to active duty. Others of you are thieves, criminals, prisoners, given a pardon," A nervous chatter ran through the room, as some of your fellow recruits looked at the other faces in the room trying to determine who the Commander was speaking of. "Because, in the end, you are Suskillon and we protect what's ours." A pause as he set down the data pad, his eyes, organic and cybernetic, scanned the room as if committing faces to his memory, faces that may not be beside you in the morning. "I'm not here to judge you for what you were before, I'm here to tell you WHAT I need you to be tonight. The Last Line." With the last three words he slammed a massive scaled fist down on the dur-alloy desk behind him, "We've all heard the phrase, drawing a line in the sand, that is us." A hand pointed out the tent flap where the recruits knew a world, their world, lay under siege by an implacable foe. "And behind us are our husbands, our wives, our children, OUR FUTURE. So tell me recruits are you going to hold the line, or are you going to let those monsters cross it and kill everything, everyone, you've ever known, everyone you've ever respected and everyone you've ever loved?"

The room erupted a hundred voices howling as one, and yours among them. "WE HOLD!!!"

The fifth planet from its system’s sun, Suskillon features a diverse range of biomes and plentiful resources. Two major continents in opposing hemispheres, known as Alappu Major and Alappu Minor, make up the majority of the planet’s land. Oceans account for the rest of the planet’s surface, with thousands of basalt rocky island archipelagos speckled between the mainlands. The northern reaches of Alappu Major are a large semiarid desert, while the rest of the massive continent features plains, rolling hills, and mountain ranges.

The most notable geographical feature of Alappu Minor is a massive freshwater lake known as the Stone Sea, which surrounds a dormant volcano. The lake gets its name from the billions of pieces of pumice stone that float on its surface. Due to the tilt on Suskillon’s axis and the ecliptic orbit it follows around its sun, every few years the planet experiences radical weather patterns. Known locally as “Dry Summers” and “Dead Winters,” these two seasons last a couple of extra months and present more extreme temperatures. The planet is home to a diverse ecosystem, from the scavenging Aluppan dart weasel to the deadly brush stalker. Much like grasses on other worlds, Suskillon trees have thick trunk-like stalks and inner cavities that collect rain water.

Sapient life evolved on Suskillon millennia ago and has long since adapted to the planet’s unusual weather patterns. Humans make up the vast percentage of the population and have spread across the entirety of the planet. All are citizens of a worldwide democracy that was formed at some point during the Gap, with a governing body consisting of a president, a forum of magistrates that interpret major legal decisions, and regional governors who meet on a yearly basis to discuss policy. The seat of this government is in the capital city of Brinnoa on Alappu Major. The remainder of Suskillon is divided into a few large megaplex cities, agrarian farming regions, mining facilities, and the occasional spaceport.

Shortly after the Gap, several thousand members of the shirren race were welcomed on Suskillon during their flight from the Swarm, bringing the worship of Hylax with them to the region. While the rest of the shirren continued with their exodus, the immigrants who settled on Suskillon quickly integrated into the planet’s society and have grown to make up about 18 percent of the current populace. In 87 ag, explorers from the Pact Worlds, directed by descendants of the shirrens who passed through that system, made peaceful contact with Suskillon. To this day they remain trading partners with strong diplomatic ties, and some citizens of the Pact Worlds and the Veskarium have since migrated to Suskillon (and vice versa). However, they have yet to enter a formal alliance.

Over the past 2 centuries, Suskillon’s civilization has begun to expand further into the system, colonizing the system’s third planet Utraneus and setting up scientific research facilities on various moons. To combat the threats of pirates and other interstellar dangers, the once-terrestrial Suskillon Defense Force, or SDF, has since branched out into space. The SDF’s Space Corps has been tasked with the responsibility of defending the planet and its outlying interests and is the most prestigious posting of Suskillon’s military.

    Notable NPC's:
    • Spoiler: Lt. Colonel Jaldamarrak; 5th Battalion

I would ask that all dialoge is both Bold & Colored appropriately, BramsesII, feel free to use Italic & Colored text to represent Telepathic Communication to either your fellow players, or NPC's. Secondly, please refrain from OOC chatter, until all four sheets have been posted, so we can keep the first 6 posts relevant to a quick look up of PC's, NPC's etc.

Valiant Larkison age 17 planet Suskillion. Larkison family member.

I’d like The 000080 dark Blue

Larkison’s family tradition salute is right hand in a fist over your heart a military salute on the head. Then dropping the open hand( on forehead down to the fist over your heart to do a small bow.)

It stands for ‘My heart, My mind, is here to serve.’

Just something I want to add in for Larkison backstory.

    Raínca Nari

She'll speak in golden rod because it's the sunniest color that doesn't hurt my eyeballs when I look at it.

    Spoiler: Sister Bright
    Show

May the Dawnflower brighten your day.
    Spoiler: Description and Personality
    Show
    Description
Raínca looks as one would expect from a Lashunta. Unearthly beauty and grace, impeccable symmetry, facial tattoos. Actually, she has very few facial tattoos. She doesn't talk about that, really. She doesn't seem armored, though closer inspection reveals her to be wearing a skintight set of light armor. She keeps a laser rifle next to her backpack, and for a raw recruit she's a surprisingly good shot. While fighting her whole form seems to glow, with attacks occasionally striking a nearly imperceptable corona that envelops her, deflecting their blows.

    Personality
Raínca is a friendly person, though it takes a little while to get to know her. She's curious to a fault, and she's very quick to learn new skills. Her very radiant smile earned her the nickname "Sister Bright" and she seems quite fond of it, often introducing herself like that.

    Spoiler: Friends and Enemies
    Show
    Friends
    • Sajael Kifua - A fellow resident of the House. Korasha Lashunta soldier.
    • Jnchovska - Another resident of the House. Recent arrival but quickly became friends with Raínca. Shirren mechanic.

    Enemies
    • The Swarm. Duh.

    Spoiler: The House of Firescale
    Show
The House of Firescale calls to a specific kind of person. Devotees from all over the Vast - even some from the Veskarium and the Pact worlds - reside there, bringing holy texts and legends about the Dawnflower to this hard-to-reach monastery on an inhospitable planet. Founded by a Vesk priest of Sarenrae named Vuurschub, it was built by the man and his followers with their bare hands.

Raínca is such a specific kind of person. A student of xenobiology on one of Castrovel's most prestigious universities, she cut her academic life short when, while trying to find out the origins of life in the galaxy, she had a revelation. A revelation that led her here, to Suskillon, where she arrived a few years ago. The local abbot allowed her to study in the House under one condition: that she join the Civilian Defense Reserves. A small price to pay, as the reserves residing in the monastery were rarely called upon to do anything. They were never needed.

For several years she studied a variety of topics, ranging from astronomy to old and arcane secrets. It was during this time that she took up meditation, which led to her eventually developing solarian powers, something that few people outside the monks have been able to do. Through intens study and meditation she managed to awaken her powers, allowing her to call into being a sort of protective force in times of dire need.

The relative peace was shattered when the swarm attacked. Together with several others Raínca (by then known as Sister Bright to the monks) was sent to join up with the main force of the CDR. She's relatively new to this whole fighting thing, but she's confident, and she has her powers to aid her in whatever is to come.

Not today, but likely tomorrow afternoon I'll have our initial IC post up folks. It will be an interesting run! Feel free to talk amongst yourselves, ask questions, come up with character interactions and dynamics.

Get to know your fellow squad mates, and see if your backstory allows for you to know one another previous to start if game.

Looking over the others sheets I don’t think Valiant will know them? They might have heard of his family but he isn’t renowned. His father was decent renowned but they come from different planets that might not have heard of him.

I’m planning on playing him uptight disciplined and brutally honest. If anyone’s play style might be able to bounce off that let me know. Might have some nice encounters lol

The only person I think there's much chance of Katara having come across before the Swarm invasion is Valiant, assuming he was attending a military academy he might have run into Katara while she was helping to train the SDF in boarding operations. Otherwise, she might conceivably have run across Atrus' old crew at some point, but it very likely wouldn't have been a particularly friendly interaction. I can't think of any reason she'd have had much to do with Rainca prior to her being drafted to fight the Swarm; Katara isn't particularly interested in religion, books or meditation.

As far as team dynamics, Katara likely finds Valiant absolutely hilarious ("Look at the tiny human child, playing soldier. Gwah hah hah."), but respects his dedication (and talent, considering he's not dead yet despite his lack of experience) and honourable demeanor.

She wouldn't really know how to deal with Rainca. Likely treats her like she's made of glass, but doesn't really understand why the Solarian acts the way she does. "Why spend years meditating? If you wanted to blow things up you could just use a bomb, and I don't see what that fancy glow does that a good set of battle armour doesn't."

I'm not sure how Katara would see Atrus. He's the squad's medic (or at least as close as we have to one), though, so she'd work doubly hard to keep him out of trouble.

That can work for me. I assume they wouldn’t have interacted much? More like acquaintances right? I’ll have him treat Katara a bit stiffly like a senior soldier polite with a normal salute as a greeting.

Or maybe they trained in the same areas? A lot is up in the air lol.

As far as party dymanics go, Raínca will probably consider everyone loud. Keep in mind she's a lashunta who's spent most of her life surrounded by other lashunta or in a monastery. The people she interacts with most are another lashunta and a shirren. She'll be used to lots of reading and long periods of silence, and when talking to people she'll probably be accustomed to doing so telepathically. Actual out loud talking is something you do when addressing a large group of people, otherwise it's just rude.

Mechanically, it looks like we have a nicely rounded party. We lack a proper buffer, but in starfinder you should be able to do without one of them. We have a good variety of close-range, mid-range and long-range characters, which is definitely a plus. We also seem to have most skills covered between the four of us, missing out only on Culture, Diplomacy, Disguise, Intimidate and Sense motive. So in short, we're missing a face. I'll probably drop a few points in diplomacy at some point as Raínca has the charisma to pull off good rolls in that skill. Plus, we won't be talking much to the Swarm anyway.

Let's hope there's not a lot of starship action though, because our only potential science officer and pilot are the same person. He's also the best engineer we have available.

Ha. That makes sense, I like that. Raínca would probably consider Katara rude and simple. She'll think the Vesk could broaden her horizons a bit. She will respect Katara's strength though, and she may feel that Katara has the most to learn of the four of them, most likely because she understands Katara the least of them.
"There's more to life than fighting and killing. Some time in quiet contemplation might help you see the bigger picture; you'll grow as a person. If we make it through this, of course."

@Siegfried For Valiant, she may have read about his family. After all, there's a whole bunch of them on this planet, and they've likely taken part in some of the more famous battles in defense of the planet. As Sarenrae is a deity not only of peace but also of actively fighting evil, there's bound to be stories of glorious fights in the monastery. Actually, who would be Valiant's most famous ancestor she could have read about? Would there be just one, maybe a few? Is there a specific battle they took part in? The uptight and brutally honest may clash with Raínca a bit, but she'll definitely respect him for it.
"Larkison you say? I've heard of them. Let's hope you're as good as your famous ancestor."

@Denomar It might be a good idea to also link your character background in here somewhere for easy access. As far as I can tell it's only in the recruitment thread at the moment. Also, as Atrus seems to be fairly reserved and quiet, Raínca will probably get along with him better than the two soldiers. Apart from that, I'm not sure how she'll feel about him. He seems to have a variety of skills, which means she may gravitate towards him for more cerebral discussions on science and such.
"The swarm, what do you think drives them? I find it hard to believe they're driven solely by instinct; their tactics are far too complex for that."

The most noticeable one would be his first ancestor also named valiant. (He was named after him in hopes that he would be able to grow into the name and be strong.) the original Valiant is said to be undefeated. Any fight he was against no matter the odds he was able to turn around. (Keep in mind he was around a few hundred years ago.)

The most noticeable figure in their family is probably his grandfather and uncle. As being in the main line there prone to be more daring. His grandfather’s accomplishments span over the course of 40 years so feel free to pick and choose some you can even make up. His Grandfather Darian is known for planning and his flank attacks. He is still a seasoned warrior and can best most that attack him. His uncle on the other hand is nicknamed the ‘Roaring Lion’ his body is almost the same size as a Vesk and he charges the enemies with a sword. He gets his nickname for leading any attack he does with a very loud yell. Very eye catching performance.

Valiant father was also a noteworthy character but died in a swarm ambush. The Larkison’s family always has military accomplishments. So even an average Larkison after training is worth an elite soldier. So altos is open. But sadly the mortality rate for them is 40% because there always in the thick of the fighting. That’s why their population is so small even though they been around for a few hundred years.

Would be interesting to see how’s they interact with each other.

P.s Dm would there perhaps be training equipment at the camp? I.e like a fake laser rifle that we can shoot? Or a workout area? So we can keep in shape. O.o

    Fair enough.

Spoiler: ...One eye. Who hung from the weirding tree.
    Show
Knowledge is a blade in the hand of the wise. Then again, so's a knife.

    Spoiler: Last Round
    Show
The Tarpit was aptly named. It was probably the worst bar in the neighborhood and just like its namesake it seemed to collect the refuse of those with just enough money to spend just a bit too much on what they probably shouldn't be. For Major Atrus Locke (Verces 113th Voidborne Retired) it was the only place in a two block radius that served alcohol that wouldn't straight up kill a human. These Vesk preferred to drink something closer to jet fuel than he could manage. The pale luminescence of the strip of lights provided just enough light to not distract from the giant screen on the opposite wall that was blasting some surprisingly graphic images of the front lines with the Swarm. Atrus didn't have to be able to understand Vesk to get the grim picture. "...And as you can see the Swarm are nigh unstoppable! They've just crushed that line and are beginning to eat the wounded! Only the might of the Veskarium shall keep them at bay? Would you like to know more!?" Atrus did not. Atrus could speak Vesk perfectly.

Atrus *definitely* needed a new drink. He signaled the barkeep (the thinnest Vesk he'd ever seen, she looked more like a very tall gecko than an anthropomorphic dragon) to send him another round and slotted his credstick into the alcove at the bar. The barkeep ambled over with the bottle but stopped with a frown. Sliding the terminal to point towards the scruffy human where it displayed a blinking red sigil. "Sorry pinky, you're broke."

Atrus groaned and scratched at a stubbled cheek. "Bloody Stars, come on Svoma, one more for good times sake? I'll owe you." he flashed what he hoped was a winning smile at the much taller bartender and the bottle she carried.

Svoma shook her head, that odd side to side shuffle that made her look almost snake like. Svoma suffered from Pirran Phage, a type of Vesk autoimmune disorder. She didn't have the same sort of strength that most Vesk did and hobbled around behind the bar at the speed of a lethargic Dwarf. "That's what you say every week." she crossed her arms. "You're a mess Locke. Bad enough that the Swarm has the planet on lockdown, you don't need to drink yourself to death while you're at it."

"You know I'm good for it." Atrus raised his arms. "I always pay you back. I just can see what's coming." he stared at her pointedly. "See what coming? Yes you pay me back each week. And then each week you go right back into debt with us. I can't just float you an extra glass of whiskey every single week forever. Vercean Whiskey isn't che..." Svoma was cut off as the door to the bar was pushed open with a bang and three large soldiers in full armor with powered down Doshko's at the ready crunched in. Atrus gestured at the door with a wan smile. "Ah. Right on time." he muttered so that only the bartender could hear it. The lead soldier raised a heavy datapad and read off with the forced diction and voice of someone who'd rather be chewing a small mammal to death or indeed anything else.

"Pursuant to article seven of the SDF charter all able bodied Vesk are ordered to present themselves for mandatory service at enclave Gr'nes'tat. In additional all criminals, debtors and undesirables shall present themselves for service for the greater glory of the Veskarium!"

Atrus tapped the rim of his glass. "All debtors. One more for the road eh?" Svoma reached out to pour.

    Spoiler: Background and Mechanics
    Show

Major Atrus Locke. Callsign "Wodin" Retired Verces Commando

Atrus was born on Verces in the pact worlds where he served for two years straight out of high school in the special forces. While possessing exemplary skills in infiltration and hand to hand combat Atrus was dishonorably discharged for drinking on the job. Since then he has served on several ships as a science officer. One such ship, a small tramp freighter "The Lucky Lad" disbanded its crew upon arrival at Suskillion when it came to light that the Captain owed a lot of money to a local crime family who made a point of taking everything that the Captain owned. And then crucifying and barbecuing him for good measure. Now without a job or a ship with which he can leave Atrus owns little more than the clothes on his back.

When the swarm attacked Atrus knew there was only one inevitable outcome. Outbound traffic would stop and eventually the Vesk would need anyone to help they could find. So, might as well enjoy himself while he can. Party's over now though and now its time for Wodin to go to work.

so. If you have frequented any bars in the turnbuckle district in the last month or so you may have seen a scruffy looking guy drinking way too much.

But by the time the party is in the room getting a talking to by the Sarge its more than likely that he's had a date with a shaver and a bath. Call it a dc 5 disguise check. ;D

I wouldn't necessarily say that Atrus is quiet. He's just very quiet when he's in the middle of a fight since he prefers to to his stabbing when people aren't going to stab him back.

Yeah, that sounds about right to me. It's possible Katara ran Valiant through a few drills at the time, but I doubt they'd have interacted much outside of that.

In terms of Skills, we're a bit light on Perception as well, though it's mostly social skills we have trouble with. That's kind of inevitable in a 4-person group with two Soldiers, though, and it's obviously a bit on my plate thanks to playing a character with an Int penalty. As far as starship combat goes, the lack of a Captain will probably hurt us more than not having a Science Officer early on. We can solve a lot of our issues by having Valiant spec into Piloting at level 2, letting Atrus take the Science Officer position, Ranica in Engineering and Katara on the guns. Or Katara goes Piloting, she can probably spare a Skill Focus on it around level 5 if necessary, and by that point she'd be nearly on par with the Dex characters. But she'd really rather be blowing things up.

On the second bit... Well, Katara is rude and simple, so you're on the nose there!

More seriously, yeah, the two have very different backgrounds and motivations. That said, they also happen to have very complimentary skillsets, so I imagine they'll learn to appreciate the skills the other brings to the table soon enough.

I'll be honest with you guys, having some skill holes to begin with, while not optimal, makes perfect sense as you haven't trained together as a squad. However, by the end of the 1st scenario, you will likely be 3rd level, so growing into certain roles will be fun to see. Perception is vitally important to almost all classes, and given the Soldier's proliferation of Combat feats, dropping a feat into Skill Synergy at 3rd for Perception, Insight, wouldn't hamper combat progression. Engineering will also be a wise selection for ranks as characters progress, as your access to markets with which to purchase upgrades during the campaign will be limited, and you will have the opportunity to scrounge and salvage equipment while in the field, Engineering will play a role in available equipment, or maintaining your current weapons, armor and batteries.

And with Ranica's primary stat being Charisma, her growing into a respectable social character wouldn't be a stretch, especially once Sidereal Influence comes online at 3rd. As a side note, Sidereal Influence specifically states that it doesn't work in Combat, which seems to indicate that it would't activate when their Manifestation, Armor in Ranica's case, is online. However, a combat round is 6 seconds, and presents an immediate, physical threat. Starship Combat is a nebulous amount of time, relative to the opposing ship's actions, and, at least in my mind, significantly more tactical, but without the same visceral immediacy of physical combat. I am tempted to allow Sidereal Influence to operate during Starship Combat,it is no more unbalancing than, say, an Envoy's Expertise die. Thoughts?

Those are some very valid points. Skill holes are going to be annoying at the start but we'll certainly be able to manage. Growing into new roles would definitely work and be very interesting. And I agree with Daedalus that Valiant could spec into an excellent pilot at some point with his dexterity. Then again, he also makes an excellent gunner.

As for the sidereal influence thing: if Raínca is indeed going to be the engineer then that point is moot as there is no bonus to engineering from that ability. That only applies if she'd be taking on the captain role. I do agree it should probably work in starship combat though.

Remember you haven't even graduated yet, not that the SDF really cares at this point.

I know but I assume the Larkison’s start copying their family members as children and fake play at a young age. So their members also give them so training that they do. So he should have a few military procedures done and some basic training. I.e being a decent shot with a rifle without finishing training.

So without the graduation he should still have some military training and manners? With the year or so it just reinforces it a bit more.

I assume pretty boy hex would be played by Josh Brolin in the cinematic adaptation because I see what you did there.

... maybe!! Also, I'm really hoping people enjoy the hooks I threw them. If you folks, through narration, flashbacks, etc, want to introduce characters you have connection to, as long as it fits the established fiction I'm open to that as well.

Ooooh did rainca copy Valiants military salute? O.o if so conflict already xD.

Copying someone’s house salute without permission/their respect in an active military setting when one is present oh boy. The sly disrespect might be interesting. Especially since his father died early on.

So did she? Lol there was two humans I think she did valiants but not 100% sure.

If not awwww. Would have been fun him giving her a cold shoulder.

Edit: kinda excited hoping that’s the case lol.

I'm a little confused, the 5th uses the standard SDF salute, which, as a member of the 5th you would be using too?
