    Operator Heideker,

We are opening this secure and direct channel for communication between us and your team. Report in regularly, two to three times a week each.

Update with any information regarding the two missing agents as soon as possible.

Information regarding the Tolls is also to be reported.

"Light's on so uh... I think this is workin'. Operator Heideker reporting in. Gonna look for this Abe Furlow guy first. **** me if I'm gonna waltz up on the other guy without someone there to back me up."

Rodge puts the radio into his rucksack with the others and heaves it onto his shoulder. The weight reminds him of the old days, carrying speaker stacks into dive bars before Season's Greedings could afford to hire roadies. The nostalgia's comforting for a second, but a sharp twinge in his shoulder snaps him back to a reality of sporadic workouts and schmoozing with record execs. He heads out toward Abe's last known address with a groan, uncomfortably aware of the other weight at his hip.

When Rodge makes it to Abe's apartment complex, he finds its largely a ghost habitat. The income of the people who used to live here wasn't high, most of them are dead now thanks to population density. There's a few intact cars throughout the main lot, but when Rodge makes it to the door, the lock's been busted off. Besides that, the place is seems to be in immaculate condition. There's a couch and it looks like he's done some remodeling to expand the apartment into a vacant neighboring one. He's got a stack of letters in a little plastic bin with a "gratitude" label, a bunch of pictures of his wife and his wedding day throughout the building, a little calendar that has a numerical count going up one every day, written in red. Flipping back through, it looks like it is counting up days, since it turns into "wedding" and "death" in two separate places. Anniversaries? The fridge is unplugged, empty, and there are bookshelves which look recently and specifically disturbed. His bug-out back isn't here and you know he was assiduous about following that protocol. His bed is unmade, but besides that you're in the clear for wreckage. Whoever busted in is either literally OCD or was looking to take him in tact. There's no blood or anything like that. It looks like it was a clean exfiltration.

There's a few notes on the kitchen counter, which is clean and clear. You pick them up and they're addressed, variously, to "bro" "Abraham" "cousin," and similar affective pet names. They look like they're from his family members, expressing concern over him. Some of them mention that they've seen him out and about, that they hope he's safe, and that "those young men" don't do him any harm. A few knocks around the apartment building are slow, ungrateful work. Most of the rooms are empty, looted, and cleared out. This wasn't a big money area - Most people left the building to live some place nicer. You don't know why Abe stayed - Sentimental reasons? You eventually come to an older man's home and he opens up when you knock, grumbling. "Those damn Talls, taking Abe like that. Got him coming back now and again when he needs new books, always escorting him everywhere," he begins ranting when you ask after Abe. "Abe always comes by to check on me, such a nice young man, pity about his wife."

After reporting the unfortunate condition of Abe, the voice on the other end suggests "Maybe you will have more luck with finding Evan Brown?"

Rodge arrives at Evan's home mid-morning. Manny, a large eight or small twelve year old friend of Evan's (in fact probably his only friend, despite being a solid community member. Manny has been there almost every time you've shown up, until Even tells him to leave.) anyway, Manny greets you: "Are you here for Mr. Evan?"

Rodge and Manny get to talking and Manny reveals that Evan is out hunting, and left him in charge of the house.
    Manny is hiding
    Spoiler: 3 Purples - Perception
    Show
a pistol, but he doesn't mean you any harm.

He tells you Evan went towards the mall, as good a place as any to hope for a deer, but he brought a sack for squirrels, raccoons, or rabbits on the way home. He tells you Evan may be gone for another day or two, realizes his slight mistake, but also that you're on Evan's side, and eyes your pistol, thinking about the implications of you being less of a team player. He's a bit nervous.

Rodge heads off in pursuit of Evan, checks out the location without much event, becomes fairly certain that Evan isn't there, and heads back to Evan's house. It takes most of the day, and when he gets back, Evan has been there an hour or two, and is dressing a buck. You must have just about passed eachother while he was heading out -- it's fairly large, must have been a hell of a walk. Hey there Rodge. You get the message?"

Rodge is sweaty and breathing hard. "Man, I feel like... I'm back in... ****ing basic..." he says in response. He takes a minute to sit down and catch his breath while Evan continues dressing his kill. "Yeah man, I got the message. That's the good news. The bad news is the Tolls took our other guy, so either I'm doing some schmoozing or we're gonna be cracking some heads." Rodge fishes in his coat pocket and pulls out a joint. He holds the unlit packet of relief toward Evan. "Got a light?"

They spend the next couple of hours talking about where Abe might be, what their plan is for the Talls, and wondering why they've been called up at this moment. It's decided that they'll head out in the morning and they do, leaving Manny in charge again and taking a sack of biscuits, potable water, and dried meat, and a sack of ammo. Evan teases Rodge about his complaining, but takes a larger share as he gauges whining vs real difficulty. He's got his bow, but Rodge notices he brought the gun too -- they hope things won't get messy enough to waste supplies like that, but they pack for the worst.

The trips into and out of town are not as easy as they used to be, and the trek takes you several hours in the muggy heat of Houston. It will be late before you arrive, and after some brief discussion, it is decided that Abe's residence will be the best place to rest in, on the off-chance that he makes his way there before you have to do the dirty work of finding and rescuing him. Makeshift grave sites consume stretching portions of land, with thousands of poorly maintained gravestones. As you walk on, the wild is starting to grow over much of it. The inner-city roads are not unlike these regions. Grass grows out of much of the pavement and fallen trees occasionally prevent passage as much as the nearby cars. Two well-armed individuals are as much of a threat as the disease, and the living quickly realize they should avoid you.

You reach Abe’s residence without incident. As you reach for the door handle, the door swings open and you stare at a young boy… thirteen or fourteen perhaps. You consider a moment about how many orphaned children now roam the city and further lament how more and more responsibility for their upkeep is being maintained by… The boy’s surprise turns to a mixture of fear and determination and his hand flies to his waist, where a grimy glock rests.

    Roll Vigilance.

    The boy rolls 1 success.

Ahhhhh. Evan makes a noise like you do when a dog oversteps its bounds. I wouldn't do that if I were you. Evan draws the bow before the boy's shaky hands can touch the gun. Time was, we wouldn't have had to treat a kid like this. But. Kids weren't armed back then. Or trigger happy. He sighs. He really doesn't like killing kids.

The boy's hand moves for his pistol, unconvinced by the threat. Evan's heart breaks a little. He tweaks his aim from the center of gravity to the right shoulder and looses the arrow. The body is slammed up against the wall, out cold. See if you can find any clues. I'll deal with this. Evan cuts the head off the arrow, then the tail using a pair of bolt cutters he keeps around for padlocks. He pulls the head out of the wall, using the pliers in the multitool he keeps on a belt pouch, putting a foot against the wall to secure himself -- it's in deep. He removes the feathers and stashes them, then does the same with the head. He empties the shells from the boy's pistol and puts the shells and the pistol in separate appropriate pockets in his pack. He applies a paste to each side of the boy's wound, to stop the bleeding, and sets the boy upright in a chair. He ties him tight, to discourage thrashing, careful not to disturb the post driven through the boy. Then he begins searching for clues about Abe's location. Hopefully they can find Abe in time to save the boy.

The kid looks like he has not been here long. Some utensils are around and some of the papers have been rifled through or moved to other spots, but the apartment largely looks the same as Rodge remembers. The old man from before though seems to pay attention to the ongoings of the apartment. He rambles a little bit about how the wretched tolls are using those young boys, but eventually manages to inform you that the Tolls have been ramping up their attacks against nearby gangs, and have been putting Abe on the front line so he can respond immediately to injuries... How kind to save their ruined lives, the old man supposes. He adds further when they came to drop off the boy, they were talking about taking over a nearby grocery store near the edge of town, where supply lines might still be made.

Even though the highways can’t be travelled by car, they’re still the quickest way into and out of the cities. You hope that this gang recognizes the convenience of this as well and look out through the horizon, looking and listening for the signs of a fight… There could easily be a hundred of these stores, or more, around these parts. You begin to wonder how you could reasonably search through them all.

“Operators, we’ve been intercepting radio transmissions from the Tolls. A lot of signs point to the fight occurring near 69… The most recent set of streets picked up are: Lexington Blvd, Rustic Colony Dr., & Oxbow Dr. Looks like there’s a store right off the highway with these roads nearby.” Convenient timing, you guess. “Operators, you should also be aware that Houston Methodist Hospital is directly across the street. Be on the lookout for civilians.”

You can see the giant hospital before anything else… No. That’s not quite right. You definitely realize the surreal appears of many cars bulldozed into the shoulder lanes first… Ah. And gun shots.

Evan ignores Rodge’s panting as they look off the exit ramp. It’s hard to make out all the figures, but it is probably what you expected… There are several people firing off shots from three cars. Some muzzle flashes are also being returned from the store… “rog”. And several people are laying on the ground with a couple men apparently attending to them.
