Hilarious Idea Regarding New UA: Wallhack Warlock Assassin
So, the new UA release brought us a new fighter archetype, the Rune Knight. I was watching some videos and I came across a few interesting application ideas...
What I propose is this: Warlock (Any) 7, Rune Knight 3, Assassin 3.
Optional: Magic Initiate feat for the Mold Earth and Find Familiar spells, &^%@huge crossbow bordering on a ballista.
Warlock 7 gives you access to Ghostly Gaze/Gaze of Khirad, which allows you to see through any wall for 1 minute requiring concentration.
Assassin 3 makes any hit on a surprised target/target that hasn't yet acted an autocrit with advantage.
And finally, the lynchpin that makes this possible, Rune Knight 3. The text of the Skye rune reads thusly:
"when you or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is hit by an attack roll, you can use your reaction to invoke the rune and cause that attack to target a (implied ANY) different creature within 30 feet of you (other than the attacker), using the same roll. This magic can transfer the attack regardless of the attack’s range. Once you invoke the rune, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest."
This means you can hide completely out of sight (in a house, behind a wall, even underground if you have Mold Earth). Activating your Xray vision, you see directly through the barrier and espy your target on the other side. You then activate whatever buffs and stuff you want, including Rune Knight's Giant Strength (Optional: if your DM rules that Giant Strength's size and strength increase allows you to use a weapon made for a larger creature size, this is where the ^%$-off huge crossbow comes in). You then make an attack against any target within reach. You can use a willing ally, an Unseen Servant (Or a Familiar if your DM rules that your Unseen Servant doesn't count as a creature you can see), or even yourself, hitting automatically. Then, you activate the Skye rune, transferring the attack to your target on the other side of the barrier you are looking through with your Xray vision.
Wham, outta nowhere, they have a bad case of crossbow bolt/bullet/greataxe/other to the <body part>.Sometimes, I have strong opinions on seemingly inconsequential matters.

I mean as written the redirected target of the Skye rune doesn't need to be one you can see at all they just need to be within 30ft so...

True, but you won’t know they are there so you would have to establish a) their existence and b) their distance from your initial target. You could do this using a variety of means, probably cheaper than Warlock 7, but yeah.
Also, for something that is only useable once per rest, you’ll want your build to be able to do plenty more.
I’m thinking an Assassin 3/Rune Knight X with Magic Initiate for the Message cantrip, Booming Blade and Find Familiar would be best, giving you two separate scouting options to establish the position of your target, and one option to increase the damage to said target. Some levels in Paladin would also be useful for smites, but might otherwise hamper the build’s overall effectiveness.
Establish position, have ally (maybe even your familiar) lie prone for advantage, and attack. Provided it hits the target’s AC you’ll get a nice big crit.

Sure, but it’s also extremely situational even if you could do it on an unlimited basis.
It’s a cool idea that could make for some amazing assassin-y goodness but it’s not something to build a character around. You’ll want your character to be able to operate well without relying on situational shenanigans.

This is such a dumb concept.
And I love it so, so much!

Hell, if we're using UA, may as well sub in Mystic 3 instead of Warlock! Third Eye mode gets you X-ray vision at a ridiculously early level.

You found a way to backstab... with a ballista...
I want to play at your table.
If you craft a magical one, you could summon it out of nowhere with Blade Pact.

Tch. You're far too kind. Alas, we're worlds apart, or you could. The best part of DnD for me is brewing convoluted plots, and making them work by hook or crook. Good point about Pact of the Blade, hadn't thought of that.
Sigging that, btw.
Edit: Now you've got me thinking about having a cannon as a pact weapon. Good job.Last edited by Phhase; 2019-11-14 at 02:47 AM.
