"Not I," the Monk said with a smile. "I do my best to avoid entanglements with pirates. It's always a risk, but I've been fortunate so far."

Sun Lee, on the other hand, nodded. "The Saynay clan, coincidentally. Not Ember and her Monarch, merely a raiding party. They control many ships, some holdovers from the Meritech, some more recently captured. This was a small group, two raiders and a destroyer. We shattered their ships and left them to drift into the closest star. After we seized their wealth, of course."

As she spoke, plates were whisked away, and the next course delivered by the servants. Bowls of thick soup, steam rising from the broth. Thin strips of spiced, smoked meat lay on top, supported by the fragrant, cream-coloured soup. Some sort of pureed tuber, heavy with the taste of a salty cheese, in which was suspended many tiny onions - each a burst of light sweetness, stark against the salt content.

Dipping a spoon inter her bowl, Sun Lee continued. "To take apart the Saynay clan, piece by piece, is a worthy endeavour but would take many lifetimes. It is Ember who is dangerous. Cut off the head of the snake. The rest will revert to what they were before: raiders, scattered and uncoordinated. If it is ever to be a fight against the Monarch, I will join you."

Morwenna smiled, breathing in the aroma of the soup. "In the past, I have found ways to make do. Chartered ships, or the ocassional refurbished job. But I am not primarily a coloniser, and most of my endeavours haven't required it. This is a unique case. I hope to sell estates to many Traders, and other notables. They will expect their investments to be protected, and cared for. I may have a line on some defense platforms.." She trailed off, concealing her thoughts behind spoonfuls of broth, and then changed the subject. The implication was clear - this would be best worked out later.

"You purchased that mystery locker at the auction, didn't you? All the way on Scintilla. When do you suppose you'll be making a trip out that way? I have some suggestions on investments to make, while you're there."

"Fantastic fantastic fantastic!" Kennoch said. "I am sure sure Lord-Captain Absalom Absalom Absalom Absalom will be glad will be for such a such formidable ally formidable ally."

He paused, enjoying the soup by the half-spoonful, and gave the Rogue Traders a chance to direct the conversation. Echo didn't have much more to say about Ember and her obscene followers--not without more investigation, anyway.

Macharius savors the soup as well. I did! Lure of the unknown and all that. Couldn't resist the opportunity. Course, there'll be rather a bit of egg on my face if it turns out to be full of old lasguns or the like, hoho! I plan to go there sooner rather than later- may as well find out directly. That, and Scintilla is quite a delight. Of course! I'd welcome the advice.

Anika nods at the notion of stealing back wealth from a pirate. 'Of course, no point on leaving it lying around. To be honest, I quite like the idea of liberating a few more of those Meritech ships. Better someone honest has them.'

After it arrives she'll investigate the soup with interest. Wealthy people had the most complicated dishes. She'll smile in thanks at Sun Lee's offer of help. 'We might take you up on that eventually. Ideally I'd bring as many willing allies as possible if I thought I could get away with it. Sharing the loot between so many might be impractical.' More research into the activities of the Saynay clan was obviously required. 'I wonder what Captain Winterscale's opinion on the Saynay is? If they're enough of an irritant perhaps he'd consider joining us.'

Anika is close enough to hear Macharius suggest what sounds like a trip to Scintilla.

"He might join just because he thinks it sounds like a good time," Sun Lee said, with a small smile. "I would say it can't hurt to ask, but this is Calligos we're talking about. You can never be sure, with him. I think he likes it that way."

From there, the conversation turned away from business, and towards art. Apparently there had been some interesting developments on Landunder, recently - one of the major art galleries had been destroyed in some sort of incident. Nobody knew exactly what sort, and any attempts to gather more information had been stonewalled immediately. The lack of detail and shutdown of all inquiries probably meant the Inquisition was involved somehow, but of course that sort of thing was impossible to prove. The upshot for the traders was that a number of works by famous artists had been lost, and surviving works had thus greatly increased in value. The Monk looked pleased to hear this, saying he owned several. Lorenzo asked Echo if the Castermires had much interest in artwork.

"Sibellus is the prestigious spot," Morwenna said, "but Tarsus is where all the money is. I have a contact with House Krin. Open an account with them, and buy in as an investor on some of the trading houses. Then you make money no matter what's actually being sold."

She smiled. "I also have a short list of companies I personally feel are worth buying into. They're from across the sector, but all of them are traded on the Scintillan markets. Tesseract is an interesting one - they're out of Gunpoint, and have just acquired an agreement with the Mechanicus for the manufacture of high-end civilian vehicles. I've seen some of their aircars. Most luxurious."

'Something to put aside for emergencies then. As long as Winterscale doesn't charge too much for his assistance I'll take whatever help I can get.'

'I wonder what happened?' Anika muses on Landunder 'I'm sure we've all met the sort of people that like to show off their art in places that attract the wrong sort of attention. There was a party I had to go to once on Malfi where the owner of the house just left his paintings out where everyone could see them. I'd be very surprised if someone hasn't had words with him by now.'

Macharius continues making small talk with Morwenna about Scintilla over the soup, picking up suggestions and gossip about Scintilla. When they both realize they've been talking too much to each other and not enough to the other guests at the table, he turns to Charlabelle, asking about her experiences in the Expanse so far.

"Hah!" The Monk laughed. "I should go find them, strike up a conversation. I'm sure I could supply a few special statues for them." He and Lorenzo chatted happily with Echo about art for a while, as SUn Lee conversed with Anika about the destroyed gallery.

"Malfi is notorious for that sort of thing. It may or may not have come to anything. Landunder, though, tends to be a little more conservative, I think. They don't allow any sort of guns there, you know. An excellent place to find very fine blades. I would be very surprised to find that the Inquisition didn't have anything to do with the matter, but I very much doubt we'll ever get any details on it."

Charlabelle seemed to have been content enough to listen, for the moment, taking note of what had been said regarding Scintilla. Macharius suspected he wouldn't be the only one to follow Morwenna's investment advice, given the chance. Things in the Expanse had, apparently, been somewhat difficult for Charlabelle. She'd discovered plenty of potentially valuable worlds, but had run into trouble putting together the means to exploit them. She was hoping that their venture into pirate hunting would prove profitable, of course - having an additional starship or two would go a long way towards improving her efforts, if only because she'd be able to use them as escorts for her transport, and thus take on more valuable shipping contracts.

"I've been considering taking up some work from Trade-Admiral Saul as well," she said, raising her glass of wine. "I'm told his charters are safe enough, because everyone knows the cost of interfering with one. It's not the most glamourous work, but it pays well. Not as well as doing it myself, of course, but then..."

She broke off, as the next course arrived. Appropriately, given the conversation at the next table, it was Landrian Spookfish, braised in soy, with chopped green onions and mixed vegetables. The fish was light and flaky, a nice contrast after the heavier soup, and likely a sign of a heavy main to come.

To the Monk, 'I can always introduce you. I don't think anyone on Malfi is upset with me, but it's been a while.' Anika will pass on some names in case he wasn't already aware of them. Better the Monk profit from the trade then someone else. 'You might want to be careful who you deal with though. I can't say anyone on Malfi with any power is trustworthy.'

She'll chat for a bit with Sun Lee about the art gallery and the kind of people who liked to show off the sort of thing that would get them into trouble with the Inquisitor. Not all of it was actually produced by xenos civilizations, some was supposed to be an artistic representation from a human who had seen or read something that no one had access to anymore. As such it was a source and and at least worth a look. 'I imagine someone knows something about the Inquisition's activities even if we have to try asking them directly. How much experience have you had with the Inquisition. One would think incidents like that would happen a lot more often.'

Kennoch chuckled, but there was a pause too, as if he'd come upon a thought he wouldn't voice. Family was often a complex matter.

"You might arrange you might a good deal good good," he agreed. "But if you if cause them to bid cause bid against each other against, please do not please mention me me me. I should have should played favorites played, after all all."

He used his fork to mix a little fish together with vegetable chunks, smooshed them into miniature patties, and threaded them past his mask. Soon he glanced at Anika and murmured, "Some questions are dangerous questions dangerous." The Inquisition appreciated curiosity even less than most. Although, this provided the opportunity for Kennoch to study the Monk's expression; he suspected this Captain had little love for the organization.

Macharius agrees with her- having capable warships made life in the expanse much easier. He tries to delicately suss out how she ended up only possessing a ship that was ill-suited for way- it was highly unusual for a trader, after all.

Not a bad idea. It's a relatively safe occupation, all in all, and it's a good way to get your foot in the door. Knowing the Trade-Admiral and getting on his good side could also be immensely valuable in its own right- he's one of the most-connected Traders in the expanse. And, of course, the volume and quality of his shipping concerns dwarfs his next three of four competitors combined.

Macharius savors the fish. Quite excellent, I do say.

"Not my first rodea, you know," the Monk said cheerfully, between bites of fish. Wether to Kennoch, or Anika, or both, he didn't make clear. "As to the Inquisition, I suspect it's more that this one was so large, and hard to miss. Most of the ones I know of tend to prefer being a little more circumspect."

"I've met a few who very much do not," Sun Lee said. "Fear is as powerful a tool as any, and some quite enjoy wielding it."

"In my experience, they tend not to live as long. Either way, though, I wouldn't try digging too hard. Some things are best left alone. Even for those such as us."

Charlabelle deftly dodged Macharius' probes into her ship situation. He couldn't quite pin down why, but it seemed to be a subject she wasn't inclined to talk about. She was happy to go down the road of discussion about Saul, though, and the talk of ships was left behind.

"That's what I was thinking," she said. "He's done incredibly well, on the strength of honest trade and business sense alone. It's an interesting contrast between him and our host, really. Trade-Admiral Saul might be the richest man in the expanse, and he built his empire without any bravado or adventurous posturing. Low risk, high reward. It strikes me as quite a sensible methodology. Adventure might be the fun way to go about building a fortune, but there's a much higher chance it ends badly."

"I agree I I I," Kennoch somberly nodded to the Monk. He thought about asking Sun Lee to elaborate on her experiences, but he decided he probably didn't want to know.

Perhaps a less vexing topic. I have a lighthearted curiosity anyway.

"You know you," Echo transitioned, "I suddenly realize suddenly I am unfamiliar I am with your ship your ship," he said again primarily to the Monk. "I have not have served the Absalom dynasty Absalom Absalom Absalom for very long very, but I quite like quite our flagship flagship, the Manticore's Sting Manticore's Sting. A fierce fierce and nimble nimble old beauty beauty. Our helmsmadam our could brag about her brag her all night long all night." He craned his neck to look around for Hannabel. "...But it seems seems she is elsewhere she is."

And if I should happen to learn some things by accident, I'd prefer to know just in case anyone has a problem with me.' She'll pause to sip some wine.'But yes, as all the biographies of Kobras Aquairre suggest, it's likely better for everyone to keep their distance from the scarier type of Inquisitor. Just to avoid any unfortunate misunderstandings.' She'll leave the subject of the Inquisition alone unless Sun Lee wanted to elaborate.

Anika will agree with Kennoch on the matter of their ship, 'I do not know ships, but a Shrike is remarkably useful to have around.'

Macharius avoids prying into the ships. It was odd, but not overly so; perhaps her dynasty had been down on its luck for some time. It is quite the contrast, isn't it? And yet, they've both made enormous fortunes. Two titans with diametrically different approaches. I'm not sure what the lesson would be. Find an approach you excel at and pursue it wholeheartedly, perhaps?

"Sitting at another table, perhaps. I do believe the seating arrangements have been designed to encourage conversations between people who don't normally see each other all the time." The Monk laughed. "The Shrike class is certainly an interesting one. Not exactly a raider, but not quite a frigate, either. Instead you end up somewhere in between, quick and nimble, but with a surprising amount of firepower. But you asked about my ship."

He paused for a bite of fish. "I'm captain of the Whisper Number. She's a true beauty, one of the old Conquest-class galleons, and perfect for my needs."

"That's a reasonable thing to take out of it," Charlabelle allowed, "though I wasn't thinking of it as a strict parable. It's certainly illustrative of the success variable approaches can bring, though if I had to bet on one long term I think I'd take Saul every time."

"Hmm! hmm! hmm!" Kennoch was plainly impressed. The name struck him as just a bit auspicious, given their recent talk about Ember Nostromo's ship, but, he thought little of it. He even tilted his head to Lorenzo, as if to congratulate him on landing such a post.

"She's been with us for a long time," The Monk agreed. "I confess I'm not sure exactly how she came to belong in the family, it was long before my time and not at all well documented. I can of course arrange a tour, for those of you as might be interested, if we should cross paths again in the future..."

As he was speaking, the last of the fish was cleared away, and the main course came out. Apician Golden Squab, in plumage: each plate featured a roasted drumstick perched on seared breast with crispy skin, the fats carefully rendered. It was paired with a pate of foie gras, prepared using ancient techniques dating all the way back to Old Terra, and drizzled with a rich sauce that tasted of smoke and citrus. The bird's feathers, iridescent gold, had been preserved and used as decoartion, three plumes sprouting from each plate. Spears of crimson asparagus and golden brown croquettes rounded out the dish. It would have taken a truly astounding number of birds to feed so many in this fashion, and this was an especially delicate protein, to boot - overcooked at all, the flavour profile would have been thrown completely off. Fortunately, these were perfectly done, and the Monk's explanation of his ship's history was briefly interrupted by truly excellent food.

Having made a dent in his portion, and pronounced his intention to badger Calligos for the recipe, the Monk continued.

"Where was I? The Number's history? Right. The original construction, as best I can tell, was post-Heresy. It's my belief she was laid down during the forging, and used as part of the drive to push the Imperium's borders back to where they once had been. Perhaps one of the last Conquests ever built. They've never been able to quite replicate them since then, though there have been a few attempts. No surprise, really. It's an incredibly versatile class."

Echo listened while peeling off thin slivers of meat with his fork and rolling them in the sauce. The feathers seemed to interest him just as much as the food; he picked one up delicately and ran his finger down the vane, watching the barbs bend and jump back into place. More than the meal itself, he felt the weight of history in these preparation techniques, even older than the ship class they'd been discussing, which was a rare accomplishment indeed.

"It is a shame it is they are not they still in production still production," Kennoch agreed. "But as you said as you of the Landunder gallery gallery and the lost paintings lost paintings, scarcity increases value increases. So you have you a fine prize prize."

Macharius savors the food, his conversation briefly interrupted by gustatory delight. With a happy smile, he turns back to Morwenna. Well, I'd say these squab would be an excellent start for what livestock to grow on a paradise world, what?

'I might take you up on that. I don't think I've ever seen a ship that old.' The Terminus was something of a special case.

The main course was delightful. 'You know when I was younger I would have considered this a bit much, but this may be the most extravagant meal I've ever eaten.'

"Oh yes, and more than a few prospective enemies because of it. I'm sure there's no end of people who'd be happy to take my ship for their own." The Monk said. Lorenzo, who had mostly been eating quietly, agreed.

"Value is a double-edged sword. The more valuable something is, the more people are willing to do to get it. It is the same with everything, no matter what it actually is. Value gets assigned to it, and then it becomes something worth fighting and dying for. The real trcik is figuring out how to make this work for you."

"Too true!" The Monk said. "Sometimes you can just tell people things are valuable, and they'll be falling over each other to buy them. Then on the other hand, you have things like this meal, and the change it has imparted on my estimation of Calligos Winterscale's chef. Or chefs, presumably there's more than one."

"Almost certainly," Sun Lee said. "I believe we have now passed the halfway point. They shall have to roll me back to my rooms, I've no doubt."

Morwenna nodded. "Poultry in general is a good idea, I should think. Low maintenance, no large space requirements, variety of useful applications. I'll look into purchasing a small flock."

Kennoch laughed lightly at Sun Lee's joke. "I would not would be surprised be be if Winterscale has Winterscale dedicated servitors dedicated just for that purpose for purpose."

Looking back to the Monk, he nodded and took another tiny bite. "That is all true true true. However however, in the process in the of fending off fending the enemies who would enemies take what is yours take yours, you further increase further your reputation your. I am sure I am you did not did negotiate your way negotiate out of every battle every battle. So as you say so say, the trick is trick to make it make work for you work you."

It wasn't just an empty compliment; Kennoch was positive that under the Monk's carefree exterior was the same sharp, ruthless mind of any successful captain. Part of him wanted to see the man in action. Echo couldn't picture him flying into battle with a jetpack, hammer in hand like Macharius, but commanding a fleet from his flagship, surely. Shame that he had no interest in helping hunt pirates.

Anika nods in agreement with Sun Lee, 'Maybe they should invest in a teleportarium.'

'I feel like this doesn't just apply to the Expanse. You would have similar problems even if you were rich enough to afford a planet to fortify yourself on. There's always something bigger then you out there. Better just to be smart about it and know when to cut your losses if all else fails.'

'Or I suppose you could make so many allies that most people would choose to leave you alone.'

Macharius laughs. Very practical. May have a harder time getting Winterscale's cooks, though.
