Default Re: IC AoW - Encounter at Blackwall Keep (PF) (Take 2)

    Round 8

Lydia moves through the muck towards the advancing lizardfolk, Amearin's magic allowing her to move supernaturally quickly. Her second jab connects, doing solid damage but not downing the advancing reptile. The summoned cheetah attacks the retreating lizardfolk druid, but is unable to get free of the snapping turtle's jaws and only accomplishes a single bite, obviously hurting her - but that's all. Amearin begins summoning more aid from his position of safety as Olofire takes a deceptively meandering route around the lizardfolk, his halfling feet a blur of hasted motion. The halfling's frenzy doesn't account for his speed, however, and his claw misses its mark. Meanwhile Frederick takes the direct route and his bluntness pays off with a deadly slashing strike, killing his foe. Jan summons a pit in front of Lydia, ensuring the cleric won't be overwhelmed by enemies. The nearest lizardfolk falls in with a cry of pain, followed by a scream of anger and fury...

At this point the reptiles abandon all appearances of control and begin to swarm about, throwing themselves at the PCs en masse. For all their efforts, it does little good... The reptilian leader calls out to Olofire, this time in common, yelling, "You will make a fine meal - face me, small one!" before attacking (and missing) the feral halfling. Meanwhile, with a crunch that would be sickening if the extra-planar cat wasn't summoned, the snapping turtle closes its jaw on the celestial cheetah, sending it back to its home plane. In shock, several of the lizardfolk stagger back, the attacks they had in motion stopped by fear of their leader's mount.

The lizardfolk druid finishes rolling out of melee and stands, quaffing a potion with a deliberate motion. The remaining lizardfolk charge forward (some, literally), but none of their attacks connect save two, one who gets a solid hit on Frederick (7 damage) and another a glancing bite on Olofire (2 damage). The raging lizardfolk cannot climb out of the pit, and another joins the barbarian in the hole after stabbing at Lydia ineffectually (her attack of opportunity grievously hurt him, though - there is no further sound coming from him in the pit...).

For their part, the human soldiers, seeing the lizardfolk enter melee with all of the PCs, stop shooting to avoid firing into the melee. "Hold! Don't waste arrows when you might hit our saviors!" calls one, though his warning is unneeded - the soldiers had stopped already...

    Round 9

As the mass of lizardmen presses forward, Lydia steps to the other side of the gate and applies her spear to one of the enemies assailing Frederick. As the Lizardfolk pour in, Frederick ineffectively lashes out with his heavy blade. Some combination of his unusual size and strength drives the blow wide, and it gouges out a thick clod of earth just behind his intended target. Still, he stands tall and grins, almost maniacally in the sweltering glare of the sun. With a loud cry, he goes into a frenzy, lashing out at lizard folk on all sides.

    Round 9

Lydia spears two lizards (killing them), her supernatural speed making the strikes look something like a snake striking, faster than the eye can follow. Frederick misses with his sword strikes while Jan struggles through the thick mud to blast several attackers into unconsciousness with her familiar spray of colored light. Amearin summons a celestial giant ant, its unusually large size making it a reasonable threat as it charges at the lizardfolk leader. It doesn't connect, but it allows Olofire to do two grievous strikes to the reptile from his position on the back of the snapping turtle mount, as a claw and one bite connect. Finally, Amearin hits one lizard with a ray of arcane cold, chilling it and doing minor damage.

With a violent shake the turtle and its rider attempt to throw Olofire off, but the lithe halfling hangs on, his dexterity serving him well in spite of his lack of training. With a snap of its jaws, the turtle extends its neck and barely misses Olofire's neck, instead biting him on the shoulder and failing to get a grasp of the feral doctor. Similarly the lizardfolk leader strikes at him, missing with his morningstar (which up-close, Olofire notices is of very fine quality and most likely enchanted) but connecting with his own bite attack. (Olofire takes 16 total damage from the two attacks.)

The lizardfolk druid begins casting a spell,

    Spoiler: Spellcraft DC 17

...while the rest of the warband try to swarm around their leader and Frederick. The barbarian still cannot get out of Jan's pit and another warrior slips and falls in the grease. Lydia kills two more approaching lizards as they get in range of her deadly spear. One lizardfolk, however, gets a lucky hit on the enlarged half-orc, and another throws a javelin, hitting Lydia painfully. (Frederick takes 8 damage. Lydia takes 9 damage.)

As the melee continues the human soldiers cheer on the heroes, some obviously encouraged and others worried for Olofire as they watch him in the middle of the mass of reptiles...

    Round 10

Not good - the fool is going to get himself killed! The color blanches from Lydia's face, in part from the sudden javelin wound but mostly from witnessing Olofire's harrowing antics atop the giant turtle. She turns to quickly pound on the gate of the keep with a clenched fist. *bang!bang!bang!* "Whoever's in command - ready your men to charge! It's now or never! Heironeous is with us! Forwaaaard!!!"

Now, to see if the reckless physician - What the?! What the hell happened to him??? - can be saved. Quickly surveying the scene, Lydia spies the female lizard preparing to cast another spell. "No you don't! Haaa!!!" She quickly dashes downhill towards it, skirting the enemies assaulting Frederick. Amearin's magic makes her feet seem to barely touch the ground, and she lashes out at the spellcaster with a vicious thrust of her spear as soon as she is in reach.

Jan grins in vicious satisfaction at the lizardmen reduced to stupor before her. If for some reason neither of these actions make sense, try to Color Spray the group of lizards on Frederick's flank (21, 19, 29) without hitting friendlies or Grease another chunk of lizardmen somewhere. Lol.

    Round 10

Olofire breathes deeply and it hurts more than he ever knew a person could hurt. Blood is gushing out of the two giant bite wounds in his tiny frame. He quickly looks around to assess the situation. The only nearby ally is this giant glowing insect. The others are on the way, but there is still a horde of Lizardmen to get through. Too many for to escape from with out risking a lucky blow. And this one... One solid hit from his weapon and I am done for... He coughs up a fair amount of blood..

    I might die here...

He lets out a primal scream that cause the Lizardmen around him to take pause.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

    End of Combat

Lydia weaves through the lizardfolk line until she reaches a position to strike at their druid, dealing a grievous wound to the reptilian spellcaster. Jan, seeing that the druid is being handled, conjures another pit - two lizardfolk fall in with pained cries as they hit the bottom. Amearin summons a display of pyrotechnics that connects with the lizardfolk druid, though the female turns and takes the hit as well as possible. It is clear that the spellcaster is spent, as she stumbles to a knee and breathes heavily (disabled at 0 HPs). Frederick begins wading through the lizardfolk, slaying two casually as he makes his way deeper into their midst.

It is Olofire, however, who deals the decisive blow to the savage attackers. With a bite and claw he slices open an artery in the mounted lizardfolk's neck, and without a sound the leader falls off his mount and lands ungraciously on the ground. There he begins to bleed out, eliciting cries of fear from his followers. As the attackers flee, his mount shakes its head and then suddenly withdraws its limbs and necks as far into its shell as possible (full defense action). The lizardfolk druid hobbles away from Lydia, slowed by her injuries but intent on avoiding the fate her leader suffered. All of the unconscious lizards remain on the ground where they fell, and three remain in pits near the keep.

The party has overcome the attacking lizardfolk warband and sent them reeling. How do you wish to deal with the survivors? Will you kill them, take them captive, or allow them to flee when the spell effects wear off?

****Your actions here may have significant consequences!****

The human soldiers have lost men, and some were taken prisoner. Lizardfolk are known to eat mammalian humanoids for food.

HOWEVER, the lizardfolk are intelligent, relatively social reptiles capable of advanced thought. These ones are part of a tribe that may - or may not, depending upon your actions - be more friendly to you if you show mercy now.

This is your call - all options have pros and cons. I need your answer before I can continue significantly beyond the introduction below.

With the lizardfolk attack broken, cheers ring out from the beleaguered soldiers in the keep. Several seconds after the last of the lizardfolk flee (or are killed) the gate opens and the party is ushered inside. Once the door is closed again it become clear that the human soldiers would not have survived this battle if not for the PCs - many of them are already injured, all look tired and dirty, and their supply of arrows has grown perilously low. However, they seem to have maintained much of their military discipline as they are lined up smartly before the heroes. It appears they are currently being led by a young man wearing the stripes of a corporal (the lowest rank of non-commissioned officer ("NCO") in the Greyhawk army - below a sergeant but above a private). With a sharp salute to Frederick and Lydia he addresses the party:

"Thank Heironeous you all are here! We have been fighting off the Twisted Branch attack for nearly a week and had nearly given up hope. I am Corporal Howard, and these are all the men remaining from the garrison. Our Officers were all killed or captured, and I am the only remaining NCO here. On the first day of the attack they broke down the door and grabbed three of our men and Lieutenant Marzena, our battle-mage. Last we saw them they were being dragged into the swamp. We are few in number and in bad shape...I know you just got here and I am not in a position to give our saviors orders, but would you be willing to find them and bring them back before they become lizard food?

The only hope we really have of you finding them and getting them back is in one of our...guests?...Captives...? I'm not sure what to call him. Ssyath came to us about a month ago, claiming that he was a member of the Twisted Branch tribe who was, well, unwelcome to return. He wanted to help ensure his tribe didn't do something stupid that would wipe them out - like attacking our keep and bringing down the wrath of Greyhawk on them. Claimed he had been shown mercy by some folk up near Diamond Lake. He will know where their lair is.

We don't really trust him yet, but when the fighting started we had him come up to the walls and confirm which tribe of lizardfolk it was. He seemed really upset to see his old clutchmates attacking, so maybe he means what he says about wanting to help. Shall we bring him up from his cell? Would you let him lead you to their lair to rescue our brothers- and sister-in-arms?
    "

As the lizard folk break ranks and begin to scramble, Frederick largely watches them flee impassively. He gathers his companions near the remaining pit(s), offers meager healing for Olofire, and takes a stance offering no question for, the trapped lizard folk therein. “Can anyone make clear to them that they are not welcome to leave, but will be spared if they surrender?” Hoping for a relatively peaceful end to the battle, he nonetheless stands firm, willing to give the killing blow, should their actions remain hostile, or non-submissive.

Inside the keep, one way or another, he addresses Corporal Howard. “At ease. You did well to maintain the keep,” he begins, nodding in turn at each man as his eyes follow the line. “We will certainly not leave your officers and colleagues to be devoured by their captors, though we must take a few moments, at least, to prepare for more grueling battle.” He glances at Lydia meaningfully, where he hopes to see her already ministering to Olofire’s needs. “For now, maintain a watch on the wall, but otherwise see to yourselves. The danger is no longer imminent.

Jan's eyes sparkle mischievously up at the paladin, towering over the fracas. "Do you prefer 'sweet talk' or 'fear of god'?? Huh? Huh?!?" At the paladin's non response, she giggles to herself. "Dealer's choice, then. Bit of both? ATTENTION, LIZARDFOLK!" the gnome's shrill voice pierces the sounds of lizardmen, those scurrying away from the keep or scrambling for purchase up from the pits strewn about the clearing. "We, your benevolent captors, have freed you from the tyrannic grasp of your former chieftain, and are prepared to show mercy, IF AND ONLY IF you cease your fighting and do not attempt to flee! Failure to obey these most merciful and gracious terms will be met with with severe punishment!!"

Jan, already wide-eyed from the description of the harrying last few days, releases an audible gasp in recognition of their old "acquaintance".

"Shall we bring him up from his cell? Would you let him lead you to their lair to rescue our brothers- and sister-in-arms?"
"Yes! Well, wait, no. Maybe?" she looks up at Frederick before continuing, "Well, if he's the lizard-man that we... met? a ways back, he'll recognize us- some of us, at least- and, well, while it's hard to say for sure that you can trust any lizard man, he'll trust us, and maybe we just see where we go from there!" She looks up at Frederick and the other Heironeans expectantly.

As the lizardfolk begin to break ranks and scatter Lydia moves to interpose herself between the enemy druid and freedom. With the use of pantomime and the aid of Jan's spell she makes her desires known: that the spellcaster give up and become a prisoner.

Lydia's intention is to take prisoner as many of the disabled lizardmen as possible, for an exchange with the captive humans later. She'll use nonlethal damage to try and subdue the druid, if necessary.

Once the remaining lizardmen are safely disarmed and watched she next makes a beeline towards Doctor Olofire. Well, what used to be the mild-mannered doctor, anyway. "Um, Doctor?" she approaches the feral creature warily. "I can tend to your wounds, if you'll allow me." As the warm glow of divine energy springs to her hands she leans in closer to whisper in his ear. "Later on we're going to have to talk about... whatever this is. Walk back up the hill, she briefly bypasses Frederick and the garrison soldiers in order to scale the walls and confront Amearin on his way down from the ramparts. "Well, well - there's more to you than meets the eye, accountant. Why didn't you say you were a mage? And, why let those thugs from before bully you around when you could have put the fear of the gods into them with a single spell?"

He turns his head enough to look up at Lydia. And with a sheepish toothy grin, the first she has noticed of the full extent of his transformation, he nods. His tiny fist weakly pounds the shell beneath him in defiance of the beast. And then stands and walks inside.

He listens to the more militant talking, mostly in a haze. His gaze steels again however when they discuss going into the swamp to free the leaders of the camp. Olofire pats Frederick on his leg and without looking up says, "I only have another 20 minutes or so in this form. If we intend to repeat what we just did, then I'll need time.. And space to prepare. I can't believe that actually worked... Amearin waves his hands and dismisses the summons as the lizardfolk surrender.

"Well, well - there's more to you than meets the eye, accountant. Why didn't you say you were a mage? And, why let those thugs from before bully you around when you could have put the fear of the gods into them with a single spell?"
"Its hard to cast spells with a sword to your throat you know? Like, wizards are all "WE ARE THE ULTIMATE DOOM", but we bleed and die just like everyone else once you finally work your way through all the mystique. Plus, you cleric types can be awfully touchy about magic that's not from some diety. I thought it prudent to play it safe until it was absolutely necessary."

Amearin interrupts the rest of the groups chatter

“Can anyone make clear to them that they are not welcome to leave, but will be spared if they surrender?”
    "I uhh, actually..."

"Do you prefer 'sweet talk' or 'fear of god'?? Huh? Huh?!?"

"DEAR LORD YOU STUPID GNOME SHUT UP AND LET ME TALK!!"

The silence from the wizard's voice suddenly booming with the help of Prestidigitation . After several moments, Amearin takes a breath and calmly explains...

As the party attempts to round up the straggling survivors, Lydia faces the reptilian druid from where it lies in Jan's Grease spell. She watches attentively as the female lizardfolk drinks a potion and recognizes the effects of a healing potion on the creature. Then, with a hiss the reptile seems to blur and slithers away from the cleric. The motion is oddly snake-like as the druid seems to grow thinner and undulates away. Realizing that capturing (and holding onto) such a creature would be a challenge, Lydia decides to let her go and returns to the warriors trapped in pits near the gate.

At first the reptiles ignore all words spoken-to/yelled-at them, until Amearin speaks. The three lizardfolk in the pit throw down their weapons and respond (in Draconic) in various ways to make clear they surrender. As they are escorted into the keep several of the human soldiers rush forward with heavy chains, muzzles, and cuffs to secure the enemy. It is clear the fort is prepared to deal with the unique threats lizardfolk present, including a manner to safely secure them and protect guards from their natural attacks.

"There are two problems with that - their lair is at least two days solid travel from here. Without a guide it could easily be longer, though tracking them fleeing will be easier than usual. Also, they don't take prisoners to trade...Lizardfolk take prisoners as fresh food. The very concept of trading food for warriors - who cannot win a fight with their food - doesn't make sense to the primitives..." Corporal Howard replies, seeming a bit embarrassed to be explaining such points to those he clearly considers superiors. It is clear that to the men here that those points are common knowledge due to the nature of their duty at this fort. "And Ssayth has asked to be kept apart from his old tribe-members. He says they would not understand what happened to him and wouldn't allow him to return anyway. He isn't in a cell - more of a house-arrest kind of thing - but these ones will be chained up and kept under constant watch until we can figure out what to do with them. This is the first time we have had any lizardfolk prisoners since I have been here..." he scratches his head, obviously thinking about the situation.

At Frederick's request, Corporal Howard responds, "I'll have Ssayth come out and meet you in a moment. First, though, I need to send a team to get out and clean up the battle - while the Twisted Branch was attacking they ate anything that died out there...our horses, their own dead, anything. Now the corpses will attract scavengers, and there is at least one band of ghouls in the Mist Marsh. We need to burn the dead before we bring worse upon our heads..."

The NCO turns to the remaining soldiers and begins barking orders with the confidence of a soldier who has just gone through hell with these men and trusts them to follow orders. Two soldiers lead the captured lizardfolk off, eight exit the fort to begin gathering bodies, and three return to the ramparts to watch for new threats. With a nod the young leader walks into one of the doors off the small courtyard, calling back, "Please remain here until I can send someone to escort you around. I'll be back with Ssayth in a moment."

You captured a lizardfolk barbarian, ranger (favored enemy: human), and un-classed lizardfolk warrior. All are injured, but none are at immediate risk of death from their wounds.

The PCs have about five minutes to discuss plans before Ssayth is escorted to them by Corporal Howard. I am going to assume you explain (in brief) how three of you encountered Ssayth at the very beginning of the campaign.

When Corporal Howard returns he is followed closely by an unarmed, but free, lizardfolk.

    Spoiler: Ssayth
    Show

Ignore the sword handle in the picture above - Ssayth is unarmed currently.

Since Frederick, Jan, and Olofire last saw him, Ssayth's scales have darkened somewhat, but otherwise the sleek reptile has not changed. Currently his dorsal crest is down and he walks hunched low so that his head is below the Corporal's. The posture is one of deference and attempting to be nonthreatening. When he sees the party and recognizes the three PCs from several months back Ssayth lowers his head further and averts his eyes as he stops. "You! SSSSSSssss! I did not want to sssee you again, massstersss. Pleassse forgive me - I only wanted to help my clutchmatesss!" he spits as he backs up and takes a defensive posture towards the party.

Ssayth's starting attitude is Unfriendly but defensive. He has a healthy fear/respect (they are largely synonymous in lizardfolk culture) directed towards the three PCs he knows.

Lydia's exasperation with Jan turns into surprised respect at Amearin's fluent Draconic. When he is finished addressing the lizardfolk she approaches him, gesturing for Frederick to join them as well. "Another surprise, accountant! Or perhaps not, for a mage. Anyway, about the captured soldiers from the garrison... will you accompany us into the swamp to act as a translator? Ordinarily I'd never ask a civilian to face such danger, but you've shown yourself to be more capable than most. I give you my word that Frederick and I will protect you from harm, and once we've rescued the captives you can continue on towards Greyhawk or wherever it is you're going."

Now the corpses will attract scavengers, and there is at least one band of ghouls in the Mist Marsh. We need to burn the dead before we bring worse upon our heads..."
Lydia nods in agreement at the corporal's suggestions. "When we return I may be able to assist with that, somewhat - consecrate the battlefield in a way that will deter the undead. But saving the living comes first."

Although Frederick has briefly explained the history she doesn't fully understand the significance of this particular creature, and she surely doesn't trust it.

At Ssayth's words Olofire whips his head around and springs to his feet. He leans forward snarling and ready to attack! He leaps forward lunging at Ssayth! Look what you and your misplaced hatred have brought! We spared you and this is how you and your clutchmates thank us?! Looking more feral than Ssayth, and perhaps even Olofire's party, has ever seen him he swipes at the Lizardman!

Frederick watches the proceedings with a blank glance for Amearin's interruption. It becomes one of satisfaction as the accountant's words are clearly understood and heeded by the defeated reptilians. As they make their awkward entrance to the keep and Corporal Howard begins directing his personnel and explaining the situation to the party, he continues to watch, satisfied with their organization and management.

He waits patiently for Ssayth to arrive, standing comfortably despite the sweltering heat and full plate. As he watches, Olofire tenses and earns a glance from the hulking figure.

When the Halfling lunges, Frederick is caught almost totally unawares. "Doctor!" he cries, lunging forward behind him. He grabs for the feral figure, leaving his blade in its sheathe. "Master yourself!" he barks. "We did not expect this meeting, but it may be to our benefit!"

If Olofire seems calmed, he will reach out to use his divine healing on Ssayth's wound with a chagrined expression. "Amearin, would you apologize to Ssayth for me? We need to know everything he knows about his clutchmate's dens and their... usual feeding habits."

The gnome's affronted expression lessens somewhat at the explanation. "Oh. Well, you make a good point, but let's just say that I'm not convinced by your 'bedside manner' in this language that you're going to make a positive impression in another." She rises a haughty eyebrow at him before beginning to walk off nonchalantly toward the keep proper.

Jan's eyes go wide, and she spins to see Dr. Olofire barreling toward the lizardman! Frozen for a moment, she turns her hands to gesture at her companion, but as Frederick's strong arms reach to subdue the halfling, she halts her casting. "Good grief, Olof! Can't you see this isn't the time or place?!?" Swiping one hand across her forehead in the universal sign of weariness, she turns to face Ssayth again.

Her expression now pained, in a conciliatory tone she addresses the captive lizardman directly. "Ssayth- please don't get the wrong idea! He's... well, he's got some kind of weird potion thing going on, and his brains are a little scrambled. You are not in danger from him, because we won't allow it." The heavy emphasis on the last words is accompanied by a very stern look at the restrained halfling. "It sounds like the soldiers have treated you well, given... the circumstances." She gestures vaguely in the direction of the outer wall with an expression of distaste. "But obviously your tribe is still in the grip of... well, some dark power, and, well, we can't help them without your help. Can we... can we at least talk? For a bit?" She gives the lizardman a distinctly conciliatory smile, reaching forward with an open palm in a gesture that strongly resembles someone reaching to soothe a cornered dog.

Ssayth turns to take the attack on his shoulder, hissing in pain and recoiling from Olofire. Corporal Howard, less shocked by the sudden violence than by its manner, steps between the halfling and lizardfolk as Frederick grapples his companion, pulling him back from Ssayth. When it is clear that the feral doctor isn't struggling Frederick puts him down and turns to Ssayth, his hand outstretched to bless the reptile with healing grace.

No, massster - no magic, pleassse! Ssayth hisses as he steps back, his posture shifting to one that implies a desire for an arms-length distance from the PCs. "If I am to take only thisss sssmall wound for my tribe, then I will. Leave me that bit of pride.

Turning to Jan he shakes his head and replies, "Talk? We ssspeak now - what do you want to know?"
" When she and the party begin to ask about the lizardfolk tribe and their prisoners he squats down on his haunches and begins to draw in the dirt with a claw. As he doodles he says, "The Twisssted Branch lairsss in the rootsss of a water tree two daysss from here. The ssshaman, Hissshka, will try to keep the prisssonersss alive...it wissshesss the tribe would avoid war with the humansss, but our...their chieftan, Ssshukak, is under the wyrm'sss ssspell. I want my clutchmatesss to survive, but the ssswamp is full of sssicknesss and wormsss. It isss worssst near our lair. If you promissse to help Hissshka ssstop Ssshukak and the black wyrm Ilthane, I can help you get to the Twisted Branch lair.

Semuanya is the patron deity of the lizardfolk. The deity is androgynous - both male and female - and its influence keeps the lizardfolk culture low-tech and anti-arcane magic. The most revered of its clergy are themselves hermaphroditic, similar to their god.

    Spoiler: Sense Motive DC 25

Ssayth mentioned their shaman was an "it" - this could indicate that the creature is neither male nor female, or possibly both.

The PCs can ask Ssayth a ton of other questions and details about his ex-tribe. The lizardfolk knows basically all of the significant NPC/enemies in this adventure, including those you have already defeated once.

He is also an accomplished ranger familiar with the swamp and its dangers. While Olofire's attack did not endear him to the PCs, they can convince him to guide them directly to the lair (with a DC 29 Diplomacy check - this can be modified by any number of things to lower the DC or assist the PC performing the check). Nothing outside of dominating mind control will bring him to fight his tribe-mates directly, though, and convincing him to enter his old lair will involve significant developments.

Lydia watches the incident with Dr. Olofire dispassionately, although she makes note of the fractured discipline between the small group. Not good...

She then struggles to read the lizardman Ssayth's intention in his tone and body language during his speaking, but both are too alien for her to get an accurate gauge of his honesty. He certainly seems earnest, though. "So, you're saying that the reason for your tribe-mates' aggression is that the chieftain is in the thrall of some... black wyrm. And if we follow you into the swamp we have a chance to rescue the captives before they're sacrificed and to break the wyrm's hold on your people, thereby reestablishing the peace. Is that about right?"

Another thought occurs to Lydia. "Wait a minute, you said the swamp was plagued by "sickness and worms". What kind of worms? Were they anything like this..." She goes on to describe the green specimens that had mysteriously appeared all around the roadside house this morning. As she does, she casts uneasy glances towards Frederick and the rest of the group. This assignment was getting more and more complicated by the day! The rumors of some 'worm apocalypse' couldn't possibly be true... could they?

As Ssayth responds directly, Frederick scowls at his own forgetfulness. "Of course, we've spoken before," he mutters, shaking his head.

When the lizardman refuses healing, he recoils, confused. "If you insist," he grunts, nodding.

He listens deliberately, focused in an attempt to understand the confusing accent and alien cultures described by the sort-of prisoner. He nods at Lydia's summary, as it mirrors his own understanding. "We can make that promise," he affirms. "In this, our goals are the same."

If he notices Lydia's glances, he gives no recognition of it.

Ssayth looks at Lydia with an expression as emotional as a snake's (not very emotional, by mammalian standards). "Yesss, that isss what I sssaid. Ssshukak and Ilthane are alliesss, but it isss not good for the Twisssted Branch."

Something at the back of her mind is nagging at Lydia - memories of an almost-forgotten lecture she heard long ago about nonhuman deities and their respective domains. "Frederick," she turns and lowers her voice somewhat. "The deity of the lizardfolk - do you recall its name? S- something... Sharanala?" "Hmm, do you mean Semuanya?" Frederick replies. "Yes, that's it! I remember now..." Excitedly, Lydia turns back to Ssayth, the realization prompting a new series of questions.

"Your deity, Semuanya. I remember that she- sorry, it? - it is opposed to arcane magic, so I would assume you don't have any wizards or mages among your clutch-mates, right? Is there anything else you can tell us about their numbers, or what tactics they are likely to employ in battle? You don't build structures like humans do, if I'm not mistaken, but do you set any traps to catch prey or snare unwary travelers? Anything you can tell us about what we're up against," she finishes somewhat breathlessly, "will help us to defeat Shukak without harming your friends... more than we have to."

Still a bit disbelieving of a lizardfolk speaking fluent Common, she turns to Amearin and asks, "Can you make sure he got all that?"
