"We have to passss through their land to get to the Twisssted Branch," Ssayth explains, quietly. "Just stay quiet and they will passss" he says as he watches the other lizardfolk creep past. After several minutes the guide nods and starts forward again, keeping to the treeline as long as possible but safely getting past without alerting the hunting party.

The rest of the day passes with the party making better time and feeling much more comfortable thanks to Lydia's spells. Crossing a river is made nearly instantaneous, and even Ssayth looks impressed with the impact of her magic. Later in the afternoon the party comes across a large constrictor snake, which looks set to attack until their guide hisses back at it, in something of a challenging way. He gestures and raises his dorsal frill in quite a show before the snake slithers away. Without volunteering anything more he waves for the party to follow, apparently unconcerned with the enormous reptilian carnivore.

As they get set to make camp Ssayth announces, "We will be at the clutch mid-morning tomorrow. It issss about another three hoursss to get there. I don't recommend we travel at night, though - sssstill too dangerous. There issss no mangrove patch for ussss, but if you like I can help you climb the treessss. Or you can sssset up tentssss here." He indicates a relatively dry patch nearby and then begins setting up his snares and warning lines, content to let the party decide for themselves how they wish to camp again.

Lydia looks distrustingly at the spindly branches of the swamp trees. "I'll take my chances on the ground," she announces, slinging her pack off of her shoulders. "If we're only a few hours away we could run into a hunting or scouting party at any moment - better keep a watch again tonight."

Once the group is occupied with the mundane tasks of making camp, she approaches Ssayth again. "Alright. Say the Twisted Branch is here -" she traces a circle in the mud with a short stick, "and we're approaching from here. What can you tell us about the fortifications? Traps, snares, pitfalls? One of the raiders was riding a giant snapping turtle - do you know if we may face more of those? Where are the prisoners likely to be held? And how can we find the leader, Shukak?" She pauses, realizing the barrage of questions might be too overwhelming. "Sorry." She forces a smile and tries to lighten her voice to a more pleasant tone. "It's just that whatever information you can give us increases the chances that we can end this quickly and with minimal bloodshed, for both of our peoples."

Frederick mutters agreement with Lydia, though his expression suggests that the sensation is distasteful. "Of course. I'll take first." He keeps most of his gear on, and paces slowly back and forth throughout the "dry" patch while his companions settle in for the evening. For a moment, he's a bit distracted by Lydia's question, eager to hear Ssayth's responses himself. Before he tarries too long, he looks to the priestess. "Fill me in when you can," he requests, and resumes his patrolling. His eyes never stay in one place too long, but all of the swamp looks more or less the same to his city-raised eyes. Still, the task is an important one, and he sticks to it doggedly.

    Spoiler: Map w/o details
    Show
I cannot seem to link the map here, but you can view it at this link. If you don't have permission to view yet, let me know.

Ssayth brushes the stick away from the dirt and uses one of his claws to draw instead, shortly coming up with a rough drawing of about a dozen rooms in a webbed pattern. "Our...their clutch issss under a grove of mangaroo treessss, jusssst above the water line. Mosssst of the tree rootssss are kept trimmed, but watch your sssstep insssside. There issss alwayssss a couple out on patrol, though after dark one of their harpy alliessss watch in the dark..."

He goes on to describe the rooms and their denizens. Most of the rooms are common living areas, but the northwestern-most room holds the lizards' trash pit and pet trash-eater. There is also a compost heap near the middle of the lair, just south of the entrance, with a plant-monster. The bottom three rooms house Kotabas, the king's barbarian lieutenant, Hishka, the hermaphroditic shaman, and finally Shukak, their king. Ssayth has never seen the tribe's egg-chamber, which must be through the under-water tunnel southwest of the rest of the lair.

"Kusssshak tamed the turtle - none of the resssst of the Twissssted Branch have any. The captivessss will be with Hisssshka - it issss it'ssss job to lead the ritualssss where they are eaten, though it doessssn't like that," Ssayth says before trailing off. "Sssshukak will find you," he says with a visible shudder, his posture fearful and his dorsal crest lowered as he thinks about the chieftan.

Jan strides with great (apparent) confidence toward the tree with the lowest visible branches, reaching with tiny hands (and shaking back the fairly loose sleeves of her robe-like dress) and grasping at the bark... only to find that the pervasive moisture of the swampy conditions, though magically prevented from having much impact on her comfort, has definitely complicated the effort to climb to a safe (and dry) perch. After several failed attempts to gain purchase, she puffs a stray lock of hair out of her mouth and eye, wiping it irritably away, before noting the huddled discussion between Lydia and their reptilian guide.

Trotting over to glance at the makeshift map, the gnome looks from Lydia to Ssayth. Blanching at even his brief mention of the pre-eating ritual, the gnome's brows furrow. "Hish- Hishka?" she looks questioning at Ssayth before continuing, "..doesn't like the ritual? Or the eating? And why?" she says in a puzzled tone, her wide-set eyes gazing at the lizard man.

Ssayth turns to Jan and shrugs, a motion that looks like the larger lizardfolk knows what it is supposed to mean but doesn't really understand instinctively. "HIsssshka issss the sssshaman, but doessss not like to kill captivessss. Olofire nods as Ssayth explains the situation, but Jan beats him to asking more about Hishka.

"Help us understand. Hishka, the leader of the ritual that kills captives, does NOT like killing captives??" He shakes his head..

"Maybe we can use that to our advantage? If Hishka would like to bargain, perhaps we can do that and no one else needs to get hurt? Frederick? Lydia? What do you think?"

Lydia nods in agreement. "It's a sound strategy. This shaman may be our best chance at resolving things peacefully, if the other lizardfolk will follow its counsel. But Shukak ordered the attack on the fort, so he's unlikely to back down and risk losing face. I fear we'll have to deal with him one way or the other."

She studies the crudely-drawn map a few moments longer, committing its chambers and passageways to memory as best she can, and then straightens. "Well, it's getting late. Stay extra vigilant on watch tonight, and make whatever preparations you require. Tomorrow morning we rescue the captives, or die trying." Nodding smartly at her own instructions, she goes to kneel at her bedroll and begins murmuring a set of quiet evening prayers to Heironeous, seeming to tune out everyone and everything else.

"Hmm, what?" Frederick mutters. He was focused on his patrol, but nods as Olofire repeats his comment. His eyes take on a flat expression, betraying his suspicion that it won't be nearly so easy. "Perhaps."

When Lydia adds her own piece, Frederick nods ponderously. "I've been prepared for precisely that, Miss Constantine. Cut off the head and the snake dies." As his words hang precariously in the empty air, he frowns. "No, that's not right... Well at any rate, we'll probably have to kill the chieftain- it doesn't seem he wants to play nice. I'll be pleased to be wrong, but it'll be much easier to convince the rest to be peaceable without a rabble-rouser as their boss."

Ssayth listens quietly to the party asking questions and discussing the Twisted Branch leadership. When it seems they are done he shrugs in the unnatural way of someone who has seen it done but finds it doesn't fit their in-human instincts. "Hisssshka is an 'it' - not male or female, and not both. It is blessed of Ssssemuanya, our god, and would be welcome in any tribe, but it came to the Twissssted Branch firsssst. Jan furrows her brows in thought at Ssayth's description of the shaman's attitude, nodding thoughtfully at his assessment that it itself might not prove a firm enemy. "Well, it does sound like we are going to have to bargain a little... rough with the chieftain. With any luck, the shaman can help us get the rest of your clutch-mates in line after Shukak is... well... no longer an issue." The gnome wrinkles her nose in an expression of clear distaste at the likely disposition of their likely chief foe.

Jan nods at the warrior-cleric, blinking and yawning at her own sudden weariness. "And when you're not on watch, try to dream about more comfortable, drier accommodations!" With a bubbly chuckle at her own joke, the gnome pads off once more, looking for an unoccupied tree (or bush!) with accessible branches. After several seconds of fruitless searching, she calls out softly, "Ah- Frederick? Could I get a hand, here?" Turning to find the vigilant paladin, she looks up at him with her most winsome smile and a conspiratorial wink.

Frederick has already gone back to patrolling, and has to be called an extra time. "Hmm?" He looks down at the Gnome, and then up to the tree she's point at. "You know, the way your arms stretch, you could probably climb up there, yourself," he grumbles jokingly as he easily hefts the diminutive sorceress into one of the low-ish hanging branches. "Sleep well, little one," he mutters as he resumes his patrol.

It's impossible to be sure from behind him, but it sounded like he was smiling.

As night falls and the party makes camp, Ssayth finishes his preparations and finds a comfortable bed of moss to sleep. Frederick's watch is uneventful, and about four hours into the night he wakes Olofire. After pointing out the limits of the lizardfolk's snares, the Heironean goes to sleep.

    Spoiler: Olofire DC 21 Perception
    Show
Olofire hears the sound of flapping wings of some kind of feathered creature in a nearby tree. As he approaches to see what is there, something large flies away, staying out of range of his light source...

Olofire wakes Lydia after midnight and is shortly asleep as well. After about an hour, Lydia hears a beautiful sound, like the melodic singing of some enticing feminine voice out in the darkness.

Spoiler: Lydia DC 16 Will Save or...
    Show
Captivated by the lovely music, Lydia walks away from the camp, tripping Ssayth's snares. At the unmistakable warning sound the lizardfolk stirs. Upon hearing the sound, he immediately clamps his claws over his ears and all but roars, "Wake up! The harpiessss, they have your friend! Guard your mindssss against their ssssong!" He makes sure everyone is awake before moving towards the harpy's singing and the hapless Lydia.

If Lydia resists the alluring music, another voice nearby begins singing a similar song, with an identical effect. This sonic attack occurs a total of four times...

Unless Lydia passes all four DC 16 Will saves, eventually one of the harpy songs captivate her. However, the cruel, monstrous humanoids are not expecting the snares to warn the party of their ambush.

If she resists all songs, she can ignore or wake the party, as desired.

(Probably) begin combat! There is no battle map, yet, as the darkness and the flying enemies make this encounter challenging to outright win. Every PC must roll the DC 16 Will save to avoid being captivated by the Harpy song.

How do you plan to proceed?

"Huh? Who's there?!" Lydia feels the beginnings of an enchantment assailing her mind, but she shakes it off and stands up to look for the source of the sound. Just as she does so, however, an identical song comes from nearby and this time she's unable to avoid the effect.

As the party wakes they are all too groggy to effectively defend themselves from the sonic attack. However, Ssayth's warning gives Olofire just enough of a jolt to barely shake off the effects of the song, leaving the halfling doctor the only PC capable of acting...

Ssayth quickly rises, hissing in the darkness, "I cannot ssssee - can you make light, little one? We musssst sssstop them from walking into the harpiessss' clawssss!" In the darkness the lizardfolk manages well, but he is effectively blinded without a source of light. Olofire can hear him stumble in the direction of Lydia, her location marked by the jingling of the bells attached to his snares...

The campsite is dark, with no fire and only the light provided by the sliver of moon and stars, which are largely blocked by the overhanging tree limbs. Olofire and Jan have low-light vision, while Lydia only has normal (human) vision. After walking for one round, Lydia and Jan receive a second saving throw due to the inherent dangers of the swampy terrain (DC 16 Will).

Unfortunately (in this case), Frederick and Amearin both have darkvision and are unhindered by the lack of light. Everyone except Olofire will spend round one rising from their bedrolls and starting to stumble after Lydia, towards the singing harpy.

I need a second saving throw from Lydia and Jan at the end of this round. In the meantime I need actions from Olofire to try and change the situation so that he can save the party from the bloodthirsty harpies attacking! (I recommend doing something creative to try and force additional saving throws and/or aid another in their upcoming saving throws.) I will make a map (if needed) once any of the PCs who can act can also see...

Olofire starts to rise at the sounds of the song, but the tripped snare and Sssayth's grating hissing rouses him from his stupor. He looks around and sees everyone similarly rising and walking in one direction.

Unsure of what else to do, Olofire rushes to Frederick knowing he isn't strong enough to shake some sense into the half-orc and does the only thing in all his medical training that he knows might give a jolt to the lumbering man. See the map.

In the near pitch-dark Lydia trips, falling face first into some of the mud so common in the swamp. As she gasps in surprise she snaps out of the enchanting spell woven by the harpy song. Meanwhile, despite the darkness Olofire manages to...tap...Frederick in a delicate spot, inspiring first a roar of pain and then a roar of anger as the aid from both Ssayth and Olofire, combined with his hereditary rage help him break the influence of the monstrous humanoids.

With his darkvision Frederick realizes the danger they are all in - he sees four harpies, each armed with a nasty-looking morningstar perched on a series of nearby rocks. The creatures have not yet realized who all is free of their sister's captivating song, as they point and cackle at the struggles of the lizardfolk and others without darkvision...

We are beginning round 3 of combat. Frederick can act normally (counting his rage, which is mechanical as well as figurative), but Amearin and Jan remain captivated and must walk directly towards H2 as best they are able. However, Jan, Olofire, Lydia, and Ssayth remain unable to see. From this point forward I need either a light source or everyone without Darkvision to act as if blinded until a light source is created.

    Begin round 3!

Unarmored, Frederick finds himself both rudely and effectively awakened by Olofire's "measures." As reality dawns, a flood of anger overtakes him, and he quickly assesses the situation:

Several paces from his gear, with Jan and Lydia closer to an obviously hostile flock of Harpies, Frederick doesn't bother with returning for his gear. Instead, bellowing with fury, he charges forward, leaping the thick muck that Lydia is struggling with, and reaches out his great hands towards the one singing Harpy. Figuring her to be the most present threat, he makes every effort to shut her up- permanently.

    Round 3

As Lydia rises she floods the immediate area with light, exposing four blinking harpies to the sudden light. As the feral she-monsters shade their eyes from the sudden brightness Frederick is suddenly leaping into their midst and violently grabbing the singer! Abruptly her song ends as she is jerked off her perch by the angry half-orc, though she hits with a glancing blow as he approaches with her morningstar (5 damage). Olofire takes a more cautious approach, arming himself with his sling as he downs a vial from his pack. "Sssss! It issss the quartet from the Twissssted Branch! One of them musssst have found ussss while hunting! Kill them all before they can fly away!" cries Ssayth as he hurls a javelin (missing) at one of the foul bird-creatures.

For their part, Amearin and Jan are suddenly freed from the captivating music and shake themselves out of the stupor. Both can clearly see in the dim light, though they must now decide how to react to the sudden attack.

The harpies, surprised by the sudden change of circumstances, immediately react to the attack. The grappled one tries and fails to free herself while her nearest sister cries out, in common, "Travelers! Do not strike! We come to offer you food and companionship! Wait!" as she starts flapping up off her perch. As she clumsily lifts off the rock she receives a stab in the side from Lydia for her effort.

Somewhat obviously, this harpy is lying. She and her sisters are not friendly...

The other two harpies leap off the rocks and fly at Amearin, intent on attacking the elf as they flyby. They end their turn in the air on either side of him, and one lands a solid blow (9 damage) as it gets close.

H2 gets an AoO vs Frederick as he begins the grapple. This hits for 5 damage, noted above.

    Ssayth's attack misses.

H1 flies into the air above the rock and tries to parlay with the PCs.
H2 attempts to break Frederick's grapple, failing to do so.
H3 and H4 perform Flyby attacks, ending about ten feet off the mud. Only one hits, but for 9 damage, also noted above.

"Wha- what happened to the music-" begins Jan dazedly as the harpies' beguiling melody suddenly stops. The gnome freezes in the middle of rubbing her eyes on one robed arm, eyes flashing from the speaking harpy to the one grappled in Frederick's muscular arms, to the two zooming by the defenseless accountant. Blinking in confusion and alarm, she darts toward Frederick, reaching out to touch his flank. "C'mon, Freddie... get 'em!" she growls at her companion as his form begins to swell...

The party, now fully functional and aware of the threat, begins doing their best to defeat the harpies. Lydia moves to help Amearin, stabbing a harpy painfully. Jan enlarges her half-orc buddy, and Frederick violently swings the harpy around, literally beating her against the rock upon which she previously sat and sang. The creature cries out in terror and pain, clearly overwhelmed by the brutality of the paladin's rage. Amearin calmly blinks away from the two harpies and begins an incantation to summon allies. Olofire uses his sling, striking a glancing blow to the harpy beside Lydia. And finally, Ssayth throws another javelin, again missing any of the enemies.

The harpy who spoke hisses at Lydia before diving at Frederick, trying to distract him from her sister. "Get off her, you ogre!" she growls as she strikes at him with her morningstar (dealing 2 damage). The grappled harpy, crying out in terror, desperately tries to escape the grapple and, her own blood slicking down her feathers, wriggles free. Hopping into the air she begins to fly away!

As their prey disappears, the two harpies continue flying, this time splitting towards Amearin and Ssayth. As the one nearest Lydia flies away, the cleric gets in two lightning-quick jabs of her spear, leaving the monster gasping for breath and struggling to keep flying (disabled, at 0 HPs). Instead of attacking Amearin, she flies upwards, attempting to escape, too. The other strikes at Ssayth, spitting a single word, "Traitor!" as she swings her morningstar at his head, dealing a blow (5 damage to Ssayth) as she flies by and past him and Olofire and turning around for another pass...

As her foes temporarily flit out of spear's reach, Lydia jogs forward after the one raining blows on Ssayth. "You two, stay close!" she calls to Olofire and Amearin. Jan winces involuntarily at the sheer brutality of Frederick's enlarged and continued assault, but as the other harpy lashes out at the paladin, Jan visibly steels herself to continue the fight. As the second harpy wriggles free of Frederick's grasp, the gnome sorceress sees her opening! With a savage grin, she gestures with an open palm at the harpies, now aligned within her reach! As the harpy wriggles free, Frederick begins to divide his attention between the two avian foes. He draws a dagger from a usually-hidden sheathe on his calf, so as to be armed in the face of their morningstars. "You sought easy prey!?" he bellows. "You didn't find it, fiendish wench!"
