"That's the sort of thing that makes it seem shady to me; that I know more about the dungeon fruit than what the elixir you're offering is." she comments back, watching Camilla write her report. Orchid shifts around a bit, trying to make herself more comfortable on the seat.

"I can't imagine you'd be willing to part with anything related to it's creation, so I won't spend time asking about it. I'd like to see the research proving that this protects against the dungeon fruit before committing. I'd also like to know what you meant by getting to the throne."

After relaying the details to Camila and having no other questions, Thanquil leaves to head to the Rokeby estate. He is surprised and overwhelmed by the cheers of the fans as he travels to his home. He knew from his parents stories what it meant to be a prominent delver, beloved by the people. But it was quite something to experience it himself. The bookish recluse he had been not so long ago seems very far removed from the adventuring hero the children idolised.

He spends the time between delves frantically scribing spells in preparation for their next delve muttering to himself as he works. Interspersed with that he writes up a diary of each of his encounters with the Infernal Voice and everything else related to the dungeon magic / fruit that he knows. He focuses on trying to work out if there is a direct link between the dungeons magic and the voice. As a break from his research he pens a song about the fight with the Spider Princess and Princes which he calls Spiders Bane. He performs it once in public but it catches on across the district being sung in taverns and concert halls alike.

"Crucibles always have greater purpose. It's been ages since a group of sacrifices has emerged from my first challenge so thoroughly victorious. You hold a promise of greater entertainment yet for me."

"Of course. In order to prevent it from falling into public hands due to its sensitive nature I'll have to ask you to come to the Castle and I'll gladly show any of you that are interested."

(retroactive conversation and the like remains fine)

Camilla makes good on her promise, when you visit the Castle, you're escorted to meet her and she takes you to a spacious lavish study. The walls are lined with hardwood shelves filled with leather-bound tomes meticulously organized. A heavy desk with an array of quills and ink bottles squats near a large hearth in which a warm, natural fire provides heat and light to the room. Everburning torches are also mounted at equidistant points among the shelves, likely as they're unable to catch the books on fire. The quills appear to be the same kind the bureaucrats use to magically write Delve reports. A note by them appears to have a list of command words to activate the quills for their respective functions, whether to have them record dictation and to change what language they record in.

An enormous mammoth fur rug covers most of the room and there are two large cushioned chairs and a wheel apparatus with a multitude of platforms so one may have numerous tomes open simultaneously for quick reference. Several tomes lie open on the apparatus already.

Camilla provides a tome that seems to detail the recorded effects of Elixir tests. Early versions were primarily tested on Delvers who had "accidents" within the Dungeon and had become bodily unable to continue Delving. It seems some of these accidents were secretly the result of consuming Dungeon Fruit. The Delve reports for the accompanying "accidents" are referenced and Camilla is able to provide you copies.

The common theme in the reports seems to be the Delvers coming out victorious against a Death Door challenge with casualties or cowards who managed to flee via escape stone, yet somehow the others survived - those individuals seem to report significant drawbacks from the Dungeon Fruit. Atticus and Camilla's theory on the matter based on this research is that the Infernal Voice punishes groups for less than perfect performance since it controls the Dungeon Magic and creates the Fruit for each team.

One of the castle staff, dressed in the style of a maid, comes through the room whispering something to Camilla and she abruptly leaves you to the research, giving you free reign of the study. The maid lingers for a moment making a shy greeting to the group, if nothing is asked of her, she too leaves you to your devices.

When it looks like no one else is addressing the maid, Orchid looks up from the reports awkwardly staring at the maid for a moment before dismissing her. Orchid waits for the maid to leave before beginning to speak.

"How along ago was that me?" she wonder aloud, recalling the she had spent working as a maid.

With that said, she casts detect magic and takes a look to see if there's anything outside the obvious that's magic. "What do the rest of you make of these reports and the elixir?"

Thanquil makes the most of being left alone in such a prestigious library. He briefly inspects the magical quills before starting to page through the books.

He's looking for anything on previous delvers who've been assigned this mission, anything they have on the Infernal Voice and the effects of the Dungeon Fruit and the research on the Elixir. He's mostly focused on seeing accounts of previous delvers given the Elixir and particularly to see if that number included his missing brother Davos.

"The reports seem more or less genuine, my conversation with the Voice led me to believe that it gains some pleasure from the death door fights, particularly from seeing awesome feats of combat. If the Dungeon Fruit is a reward it creates then I could see it giving drawbacks for fights that did not sufficiently entertain it. I didn't notice any ill effects from the Elixir, it seems to have provided me some benefit and if it protects against any ill effects of eating the dungeon fruit then it's definitely worthwhile. Some of the accounts of 'accidents' after consuming it are quite gruesome."

While there's no mention of Davos in this particular set of research, there is mention of a Delver you know to have Delved with Davos in the past. A Whisper Gnome named Mala, and a skilled ninja. Davos once told you a story about how she could manipulate shadows. It seems she returned from a Death Door challenge, though the date is after Davos' last recorded Delve.

While externally she appeared fine, she was unable to articulate words and quickly fell into convulsions upon her return. The only other survivor of that Delve is marked as deceased, but he was able to inform the bureaucrats that she had consumed both Dungeon Fruit, the rest of their team having died in the encounter. Upon examination both magical and mundane it appeared that something was devouring her mind from the within. Elixir was administered as an early test and it halted her mental deterioration though she is no longer fit to Delve. The Elixir provided a miraculous, yet incomplete recovery and it is marked as one of the earliest Elixir tests. Perhaps the formula wasn't complete at that time.

Later Elixir uses seemed to yield even more promising results.

After seeing nothing out of the ordinary with detect magic, Orchid goes to help Thanquil go through the books, making sure to keep in mind any references to how the elixir is made. "Really? I do want to trust it, but it just still seems to be too good to be true. I'd at least like to see if I can replicate their work or take a look at how them made it. It seems entirely non-magical in nature which is unusual." she comments in between shelving a tome before taking out another.

"Are you keeping an ear out?" she asks going through the books.

Liselle's search (1d20+13)[14] - assuming take 20, plus any relevant magics the party wants to buff with.

It doesn't sound like anybody is coming, though on a very thorough search of the study, which takes quite some time, you do discover scuff marks underneath the mammoth fur rug, indicating a secret passage. This discovery leads to finding a small lever behind some of the books, which pops open a secret passage behind one of the shelves.

Investigating the back of the shelf, it seems to have a thin sheet of lead covering it. Someone didn't want this hidden chamber discovered.

This leads you into a small laboratory, which is in a state of disarray. There is an inverted Circle of Protection against Opposition painted on the floor in some kind of dark material that appears near black. There is a large apparatus that looks rather menacing and what appears to be splatters of dried something within the Magic Circle. The apparatus seems to be designed to inflict incredible agony, your knowledge in spellcraft lets you determine it has a similar effect as the Wrack spell.

There are bottles and tinctures filled with what appears to be incomplete or imperfect Elixir. Some of them have been knocked over, their contents spilled out and dried while others have cracked or broken. None of them have the golden glowing appearance of the Elixir offered to you by Prince Atticus and Camilla.

There are a few small leather-bound tomes and a pedestal that clearly once held another tome by the discoloration, though some of this collection is apparently missing. From what you can find in the tomes within the secret chamber it seems some kind of nefarious dark ritual is needed to draw Dungeon Magic into Solum, the same kind of Dungeon Magic as the fruit. Then it goes through some kind of purification process, though the details are scarce. It looks like Atticus and Camilla's research is pretty twisted in nature and if it was released to the other Princes or the public it could potentially ruin them.

Orchid glares at the equipment left out throughout the room as she scowls.

"This is exactly why I wanted know how this was made!"
Orchid says in a struggle to keep herself from shouting before finally settling on grumbling to herself about the whole situation for a couple of moments.

"Okay." she says after finally having calmed down just a bit. "Please avoid that inverted magic circle against the dungeon there." she asks, point towards the magic circle. "I wouldn't want to know what would happen if we messed the circle itself up in some way. If anyone know what that black material the circle is made of I would appreciate knowing."

Grabbing out her scythe, she uses it try and grab what she can of the dried material in the center of the magic circle. After retrieving it, Orchid stows it away in a bottle from her pack. She then starts checking out the bottles that have some prototype elixir remaining and takes small samples out of each one into her own bottles. Afterward, she starts carefully scouring the books for any sort of information on the creation process.

Thanquil makes careful copies of what he'd found about Mala.

"It does seem too good to be true but these are some of the most skilled alchemists in Solum working upon a vast wealth of knowledge. I'm sure that there is nothing to worry about --" Thanquil responds to Orchid as he follows Liselle into the secret passage then breaks off abruptly as he sees what's in the room.

"I, err, take that back, this does seem awfully suspicious." Thanquil says whilst running round the room examining the tomes and apparatus. "This seems like some sort of torture device. And a summoning circle. Are they summoning dungeon creatures and torturing them to death? This is bad, this is very bad. If this gets out they'll be finished, if they know we know then we're done for." Thanquil says, starting to back away towards the study.

Unless there are additional actions the group wants to take, you hide your tracks and make a quick exit from the Castle, free now to go about your business. Only now burdened with the knowledge that your team's sponsor may not be as righteous as he would like to appear.

Orchid analyzes the samples she's taken from the Castle and has some interesting findings. Most notably, the blood of Outsiders. Specifically [Good] subtype outsiders. Though most of the components of the incomplete elixirs are a mystery, too thoroughly aged and decomposed or mixed and reacted to identify.

After your stay in Solum, you're once again called to serve your home. Marching down the long path past the obelisk now feels rather familiar. You see yet more bureaucrat acolytes in their small round hats engraving names into the obelisk. Once a chilling reminder of your home's mutual enemy the Dungeon, you now have your sights set on something even more worrying: the Infernal Voice.

Upon arriving in the yard, you see familiar faces and unfamiliar ones. New conscripts are going to Delving for the first time today, meaning there will likely be a great deal of casualties.

Your team is announced once again and after the sickening feeling of time and space bending as you enter the Dungeon you take in your surroundings.

You stand in a vast desert that appears to stretch endlessly in every direction. A blistering hot orange sun dominates a strangely empty and dark sky, much larger than the sun in Solum. The blistering fireball hangs high in the sky overhead as a scorching breeze rolls over the endless sands.

Towering in front of you is an enormous red stone pyramid stretching into the sky. The surface of the pyramid shifts forming a staircase. With no other reference points, you ascend the staircase in the sweltering heat climbing roughly 300ft in elevation before you come to a strange stone pedestal. The object juts out from the center of the stairs and is capped with a flat circular stone with a round notch carved out of it. There are symbols carved into the stone in Ignan.

Thanquil is able to translate them. "Turn to Enter"

The stone pedestal is quite heavy and requires a substantial effort from several of your team to turn. Once it has turned 180 degrees to orient the notch towards the pyramid, the surface of the pyramid again shifts as a passage leading inside grinds open.

Despite the welcome relief from the heat, you move into the shadowy passage cautiously.

    The Mirror Room
You enter a large octagonal room with a central pillar stretching from floor to ceiling. There appear to be two mechanical valves attached to the central pillar with handles so they can be turned. Their purpose presently a mystery.

Seven of the eight walls are covered by enormous mirrors, with the eighth being the passage through which you entered. Upon even a brief inspection, you see inscribed in the mirrors the Draconic Symbol "Vay Loos", meaning roughly "unlock".

The remainder of the room appears to be more red stone, the material from which the pyramid is built.

Spoiler: Stuff Orchid did in between delves
    Show
In between her own personal research and research taken from the team's sponsors, Orchid would be seen outside of her home. Her biggest breakthrough, thanks to her annoying and short assistant, was finally breaking into art of grafting in an unusual methodology...

Orchid stood in her father- her lab, after asking her assistant to standby outside, Orchid set to work. On the finely made granite tabletop, she set down her tools for the grafting process. A scroll containing a spell to delay pain short term, and a set of draconian feathered wings, the golden feathers of which gleam beautifully under light. After removing everything that would get in the way, Orchid nabbed the scroll act read it aloud, activating the spell. Grabbing one of her knives from underneath her skirt, she pokes one of her fingers with it until she can see small amounts of her blood run down the dagger. Having confirmation that her sense of pain isn't working, she grabs one of her artificial wings. Using a set of mirrors she had setup so she could see her own back. Orchid brings the new wing up to the wing she had improperly tried to apply to herself. She began her incantation, praying that it would work. As she finished it, she noticed her own wings begin to loose solidity almost acting entirely like gelatin. She then slowly pushed the new wing into her old one. She watched as it slowly sunk in, the old wing warping and contorting itself the feelings of which went shivers down Orchid's spine. Once in place, she repeated the same process for the other wings. With that done she began the next spell, the feelings of her new wings were suddenly felt as Orchid's spell was rewiring her nervous system. Once complete, she stretched out her new wings and tried to take off into the sky, which while successful unfortunately quickly ended with the artificer crashing headfirst into her own ceiling and sending her crashing onto the ground; not that she minded since this had shown her that she was utterly successful.

Orchid arrives at usual place, meeting up with everyone else with her new additions- a majority of her skin made of gleaming gold scales matching the new wings on her back. Along with it, her legs were gone and replaced with a long serpentine tail in a matching beautiful gold. Accompanying her, comes a walking chest with arms and legs trailing behind her and a raven on her shoulders that is taking in all the sights. She spent time watching the new blood before she follows everyone else into the next delve.

Once in the pyramid, Orchid looks around the room. glancing at the materials and reading off a translation of the symbol on each of the mirrors. "Well, it looks like there's only one way to go. I hope we don't run into mummies. I don't have anything to remove curses." she mentions aloud.

Thanquil joins Orchid and watches the new blood filing into the dungeon. "It's strange, it wasn't so long ago that we were in their position. Setting off on our first delve I mean. But it feels so different now, knowing what to expect. They all look so young, they have no idea what they're about to face." Then he turns to Orchid "You've had a bit of a makeover, the new look is quite something! It suits you though."

Thanquil's appearance hasn't changed much but he is also newly attended by a familiar, a rat sitting in his hood, it's ears twitching curiously at the sights and sounds of the staging yard and then the desert.

After opening the pyramid's entrance Thanquil pauses and pulls out some scrolls from his backpack, casting the spells on himself. "I scribed a couple of scrolls of Remove Curse since the last delve, hopefully they'll be enough to get us through this. I'm going to use the Ring of Invisibility now. I'll let you know if I wander off somewhere." He says.

Thanquil paces the room examining the mirrors and then the valves, trying to identify their purpose. "Should we try turning the wheels and see if we can open up a different passage?"

The sweltering heat did little to dissuade a Fireblood Dwarf used to the blaze of magically enhanced forges, but the burning orb of a sun hanging low in the sky made his eyebrows knit together in confusion. So far all the Dungeons had been enclosed spaces that ostensibly could have fit into the earth and stone below the floating island of Solum, but there was no way to fit this environment inside any space known to man. Judging from the unfamiliar sun it couldn't even be another, yet undiscovered place in the endless sky. Did the enter a different plane even?

Inside the unneeded respite of the pyramid Solstafir took some time inspecting the mirrors and central pillar, brushing with gauntleted fingers over one of the valves. "Might have to turn them both at the same time, or perhaps each does something different? Let's try the left one first with nothing else to go on."

After a good yank, the first of the two wheels turns, though somewhat arduously. After a full rotation it hits a stop and a cacophony of stone grinding against stone reverberates through the chamber. A large mirrored surface slides down, blocking your exit. The same draconic rune etched into base of the mirror as the other seven.

Now all eight of the walls of the chamber are covered with the strange mirrors. There are everburning torches attached about 30ft up on the central pillar still providing the room with illumination, though it's much darker and a bit cooler now with the passage to the scorching desert outside blocked.

There still appear to be no exits.

Moving to the second of the wheels, after putting up a brief and futile resistance like its twin, it turns a full rotation before the same noise floods the chamber, this time, a passage in the floor opens, revealing a staircase leading further into the depths of the pyramid.

    Exits:
Open the entry passage and return to the endless desert
Descend the staircase deeper into the pyramid

    Other:
    Inspect the mirrors more closely

Descending the staircase, you enter into a large room that shares the same central pillar as the octagonal room above. Four torch sconces with burning torches rest on each of the four sides.

Three sandstone pedestals are equally spaced on both the northern and southern walls of the chamber. All six pedestals hold creatures that resemble small-winged devils. Their hair blazes, adding additional light to the room.

Behind the pedestals are yet more torches. The creatures glare at you momentarily as you enter before shrieking aggressively.

He had gotten much more adept at wielding and projecting the fire in his ancient blood, but it evidently would have to wait for another fight. "I won't complain much. I'll finally get to see how well these golden scales handle the heat. I need to know if the pain from putting these on was worth it." Orchid comments while drawing out her enchanted scythe. She then flaps her wing and flies towards the nearest mephit and lands. In one swift motion, she slices at the mephit.

Liselle would pick herself a mephit as well, and sprint into the attack. She'd been practising a new type of charge in her break between delves, and this would be an awesome time to try it out in anger! Mainly because these things looked pretty weak, and a miss against them would be less embarrassing than all those whiffed strikes against the animate furniture had been...

    Spoiler
    Show
Liselle's jump mod is high enough she can't fail to jump at least 10' during a charge, so it's Leap Attack time!

She's starting off in Child of Shadow stance (so she now has a 20% miss chance until her next turn from moving). Using 5 points of Power Attack, so that's -5 attack / +20 damage. Also charging, for +2 attack / -2 AC.

    Net result: -3 attack / +20 damage / -2 AC.

Liselle's attacking with her +1 Spiked Chain (which I'm pointing out since I assume these still have the DR/magic of a stock mephit).

    "Attack" - (1d20+11)[19] Critical Threat on a 31 only
"Crit Conf" - (1d20+16)[34] With her Int now boosted by her equipment, Liselle's bonus on critical confirmation rolls increases to +5.
    "Damage" - (3d6+30)[36]

Thanquil carefully examines his foes, bringing to mind their particular weaknesses and then sharing that information with his allies.

Then he puts his knowledge to the test carefully lining up a shot on one of the mephits.

The team moves decisively, choosing their targets and moving to engage like a well oiled machine.

Solstafir and Liselle move to engage, slashing into their targets who erupt in fiery smoke and drop lifeless to the ground.

The spider zombie bites into one, holding it still momentarily allowing Thanquil's arrow to lodge itself through its head.

Orchid moves towards another, slashing into it mercilessly with the scythe, severely wounding it.

The three living Mephits shift away from their would-be attackers (5ft step out of melee) and each unleash a potent Scorching Ray. The devilish creatures attempt to focus down a single enemy. Deciding Liselle poses the greatest threat, they all target her.

    1. (1d20+5)[15] to hit
    On a 25 (1d20+5)[25] to confirm
    (4d6)[14] fire damage
    +(4d6)[16] on a crit

    2. (1d20+5)[24] to hit
    On a 25 (1d20+5)[24] to confirm
    (4d6)[8] fire damage
    +(4d6)[12] on a crit

    3. (1d20+5)[22] to hit
    On a 25 (1d20+5)[6] to confirm
    (4d6)[13] fire damage
    +(4d6)[16] on a crit

Liselle sees and easily evades the first of the three rays, though she's not as fortunate with the following rays, the beams of fire scorch her.

    Spoiler: Status and Conditions

    Two Fire Mephits are unharmed.

Liselle takes 21 fire damage and has 41 HP remaining.

"You doing okay Liselle?" Orchid asks.

She then moves up to slice the mephit and follow up with a strike from her tail that exposed its spike stone on impact.

The others could probably hear Liselle swearing mostly under her breath as the two scorching rays hit; She's got no resistance to fire, after all. But when Orchid queries her, the response is "Better than against those chairs! At least I can hit these!" As she's speaking, Liselle picks the last unengaged Mephit and repeats her leaping charge.
