Orchid approaches the mirror, the ring of invisibility borrowed from Thanquil preventing the Mirror from being able to show her reflection. She works on the mechanisms securing the Mirror to the ceiling, unclasping the skeletal fingers holding the Mirror in place. Once released she heaves the surprisingly heavy object into her Haversack.

The other mirrors in the eight alcoves are mundane, despite their beautiful craftsmanship.

After it's determined no obvious noises are emanating from behind the ajar door, Thanquil translates the Ignan inscription informing you it reads "Let there be light."

Upon Thanquil's whisper of the carved words, the door swings open on its own.

Peering through the yawning portal you can see the major features of the upcoming chamber without entering. Dominating the room is a large horizontal, intricately and ornately carved stone sarcophagus. Resting on top of it is a single lit candle sitting in a sapphire lamp casting a soft glow and deep shadows through out the room.

Six additional, less decorated sarcophogi stand vertically against two of the chamber walls, three pairs facing one another. Cold air flows from the chamber as the smell of salt accosts your nostrils. The particular shiver that runs up your spine triggers memories in each you, without even using Detection magic, you recognize the clues that there is magic at work here.

"Feels like this is the final challenge of this place," Solstafir said while scratching the back of his neck. "Not quite like one of these death gates, but yeah, let's leave it for last. Finish with some proper fun." He turned around towards the yet unexplored parts of the dungeon they had passed by before.

Reviewing what's been explored of the dungeon, there is one chamber unexplored, and there may be things additional things worth interacting with:

    • The Endless Desert (not really a chamber)
    • Mirror Chamber - octagonal room with the eight walls covered in enormous mirrors, each with the draconic work "unlock" engraved in them at the bottom
    • The Fire Mephit Chamber (fully explored)
    • Large stone table meeting room (fully explored)
    • Sturdy Stone door from the large stone table meeting room (unopened)
    • Barracks (fully explored)
    • Training Room (fully explored)
    • Fountain Chamber (sword, mirror shield, and fountain not interacted with)
    • Minor Guard post (fully explored)
    • Mirror Of Opposition Hallway (fully explored)
    • "Let There Be Light" chamber - not entered

Returning to the unopened Sturdy Stone Door and listening and searching for traps, no sound emanates from within and no traps are discovered, though upon careful inspection it seems some of the residents may have at one point tried to claw their way in. Not very successfully given that the door is still intact.

The door is locked, though Liselle makes quick work of the lock. After unlocking it, it turns out to be stuck fast. Even so, it's no match for the party's strength and/or adamantine weaponry. It seems maybe someone, or something didn't want anything getting in here.

Upon busting the door open, it becomes clear that a heavy chair was placed against it as a makeshift barricade.

Viewing the room, there are two narrow tables with assortments of glass bottles and beakers of various sizes as well as strange instruments that hold the glassware for whatever their intended use may have been. A hint of sulfur lingers in the stale air. Large mirrors hang from ceiling to floor facing each other on opposite sides of the room making the room appear much larger than it actually is. Several obviously magical flames burn in bowls and sconces about the room providing excellent illumination. Beside the far wall a small (fit for a small sized creature) soiled white coat rests on top of pile of dust and ash, and from the pile of ash an ornate short staff juts up, leaning casually against the wall.

There are no apparent threats or exits other than the way you came.

"Call me paranoid, but I'm thinking this is another 'Invisible person takes down the mirrors' situation. I'm just imagining some magical light or heat beam shooting from wall to wall, reflecting off the mirrors until it hits one of us... "

Liselle really didn't fancy walking in between another set of mirrors. For some reason...

The everburning flames on the torch sconces and in the bowls register as magical.

The two mirrors also register as magical, having a faint Divination Auras. Upon close inspection they have a draconic rune inscribed upon them that translates to "show me". Orchid identifies their function as viewing mirrors (they display something somewhere upon use of the command word) and determines they aren't a threat.

The staff is also magical, Orchid identifies it as a fully charged Staff of Frost.

She also comes upon a few other less items among the tables and glassware.

    • 2 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds
    • 1 arcane scroll of Stinking Cloud
    • 1 wand of lightning bolt (somehow at Caster Level 3) with 8 charges

"I guess not every magical mirror can be a threat," Solstafir said with a noncommital shrug. He could read the draconic runes well enough, for all the sparse information that provided. Unless the inscribed words describe not just the function, but also the command to activate them. Seeing no harm in giving it a try, he looked at the mirror and spoke with careful and clear enunciation. "Show me." The power of dragonkind ran through his blood, the language as natural to him as the Dwarven tongue.

As Solstafir's enunciates the draconic phrase, the mirror clouds over briefly. The fogginess recedes to show an area of the pyramid from the top down from which a flat platform juts out. A hanging garden abundantly covered in vegetation. Water flows into a pool near the center, and from there it disperses outward to the various plants. A bush with multitudinous red flower blossoms, a tall cactus covered in barbed spines, and all manner of other plant life seem to thrive underneath the scorching sun on this hanging garden.

It must've been on a side of the pyramid not visible from the direction you entered.

With his vast knowledge of nature, Thanquil informs you none of those plants are native to Solum.

He checked the other mirror with the 'Show me' inscription as well, then got ready to move on, harpoon in hand. "We should check that octagonal room at the start as well, might open another path that leads up to that garden."

Upon speaking the command word to the other mirror it too fogs and fades, eventually revealing a top-down view of the entrance through which the party entered the pyramid.

Returning to the Octagonal Mirror Room and speaking the command word, it turns out these eight mirrors are also viewing mirrors, though they simply look out towards the endless desert. Judging by the position of the fiery sun hanging in the sky, they let you view in the direction you're facing as you stand before the mirror. None of them open to provide a new passage way.

Returning to the sarcophagi room, the magic present in the room once again is palpable in the air, as if something is amiss.

The team begins to file into the chamber, once again viewing the singular horizontal sarcophagus in the center of the dark chamber with the small sapphire lamp casting a faint light in this unusually dark room. Six other sarcophagi stand vertically, three pairs facing each other along the two side walls.

As the last of the team moves into the chamber, the door slams shut as the lid of the center sarcophagus bursts open, flinging the sapphire lamp into a wall where it shatters and extinguishes, leaving only the team's light sources. From the sarcophagus a pale skinned elf in royal clothing with visible fangs rises from the now open sarcophagus. Clearly odd, as there haven't been any humanoids so far.

Even Liselle had some idea what the fangs meant. She... did not fancy going first. Rumour had it you didn't want to get too close to a Vampire, and she certainly wasn't going to do much damage from long range!

The only thing for it was to break out her emergency vial of Silversheen and apply it to her greatsword. It wouldn't stop the Vampire charging, but at least she wouldn't be making herself a specific target by running out ahead of the others. But in return, she'd be giving up the chance to strike first...

A wicked grin exposed Solstafir's teeth when the elven zombie delivered a powerful strike on thr zombie minion with its bare fist, the enhanced chitin cracking and groaning under the impact. "Looks like this one might give us a workout!" Harpoon abandoned, he joined the fray and swung his ax with boundless energy in a wide arc to chop through any defense it might encounter, be it natural or supernatural. Once the dwarf occupied the vampire's focus his undead minion surged into its space to force it to the ground with its raw bulk the moment before Solstafir set up his strike.

The team tears into the vampire, Liselle's silversheen'd sword and Solstafir's axe cleaving through its body as Thanquil's arrows whistle through it, though rather than being damaged the creature bursts into (10d10)[55] bats! They flutter about the chamber, it seems they'll need a moment to orient themselves and reform the vampire.

Despite clearly appearing to hit, Solstafir and Liselle both didn't feel the tactile response of landing a blow on flesh.

The six clawed skeletons march their way towards you, passing through one another as if they weren't solid objects. They come upon the spider who is still standing as the group's vanguard and each attempt to claw it.

They only hit the spider on a 20:
    (1d20)[3] to hit

The fireball and cone of flame erupt through the room. The strange tingling sensation of palpable magic fades as light suddenly fills the room. The blasts damaged a large glyph array in the chamber. The bats and skeletons have vanished.

The team identifies the glyph array's magic as illusory, it seems the creatures you were fighting weren't real at all.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
This illusion scenario. When Thanquil translated the "Let there be light" from the front of the door, it activated this illusion event in the room per the module. I've added this glyph array as a justification to end the encounter and continue, since I don't think it's an interesting/enjoyable enough encounter, they're not really a threat as laid out in the module.

You find a switch in the bottom of the now much less ornate stone sarcophagus. After checking for traps, Liselle flips it. Stone grinds against stone as a segment of the red stone floor shifts, revealing a stairwell down. Carefully descending the stairs lead to yet another chamber, in the center of which stands what might be an ancient altar of red stone. Atop the altar rests a bed of strange fungus-like plants and numerous long strips of burial cloth. In the center of the altar rests of a cracked crystalline bottle. Water seeps endlessly from the crack in the bottle. Around the altar glitters treasure. 5,000gp worth of coins, gems, and jewelry.

Once it is determined that there is no immediate danger, Orchid identifies the object as Decanter of Endless Water, collecting it from the Fungus bed. The crack in the bottle is pretty bad, the way the magic of this item works, there is no almost no hope to fix it. Once it's turned to a higher degree, it can't be turned down or off. Eventually, it will run out of water and break, but given the state of this dungeon area, Orchid estimates it likely contains as much water as any of the largest lake beds in Solum.

Following the water, Liselle discovers another secret switch. When she flips it, three paths open:

A passage to the Hanging Garden grinds open, stone shifting to reveal the passage.
Going out to the hanging gardens you find several kind of edible plants. It seems they're not made of only Dungeon magic, so they can actually be taken to Solum, even planted there and possibly grown. If they take to the climate and soil. You can sell the seeds for 5,000gp.

The characteristic whoosh rings out. A comforting sound to the ears of Delvers. The slightly distorted view of the pillars in the tunnel leading to the yard. A portal to Solum opens.

Finally, the fungus bed shifts. The mushroom-like vegetable matter twisting into a knotted ring. A dark vortex forms within the strange from which emanate the sounds of your own voices, screaming endlessly. A death door challenge.

"We'll not get these every time, you know. These Death Doors seem a pretty rare occurance overall." Solstafir tapped his foot in a clear display of impatience. It looked like he would walk out of here without any worthwhile replacement for the rather lackluster spider zombie. The big salamander was out of his power's reach, most of the other things were pathetically weak. He had been eager to try replacing a corpse's arm with a blade or hammer as described in that dark tome they had recovered previously, but so far no suitable specimen came under his ax. And more than anything, he itched for a good fight. The tease and denial of the illusory vampire left him immensely frustrated and begging for some big, imposing monster to give him a challenge. Claws and fangs against metal, blood and sweat flowing free like beer at the Dwarven Consortium's monthly get-together. "We're still good on resources and spells, aren't we? If we put it off it won't get easier next time."

"Well I've still got power left, but..." Liselle can't help but stare at the fungi around the Death Door, and wonder to herself what they'd be fighting with a theme like that...

"Yeah, I'm with Orchid this time. Fighting some kind of giant poisonous mushroom swarm seems like a bad matchup for me."

Everybody in the group receives a letter from Thanquil. In summary, it communicates that his parents within the Royal Guard managed to lobby Atticus to alter his conscription and instead Thanquil is now part of Atticus' research team, working closely with Camilla.

He will still do what he can to support your endeavor but will no longer be sent to the Dungeon with you. Atticus is arranging to bring in Delvers to bolster your team who are favorable to his mission, so expect for the Bureaucrats to assign additional Delvers to your group on your next delve.

Are there any actions you want to take before your next Delve?

Orchid sits at a fine wood sorting through her usual mail; though now she sports a pair of claws very finely sharpened to a point with matching gold scales that creep up most of her arms before becoming skin once more. She set all the other mail aside when she found a letter from Thanquil, immediately cutting it open with her claw and begins reading it. Her face becomes one of disappointment and sadness once she reads that Thanquil will not be joining their little group anymore for their dungeon dives. Hopefully he could provide some insider info in the future she thought as she finished up her mail and made her way to her father's no, her lab now. There she moves towards her newest experiment- what was once cumbersome movement is now entirely natural after making new breakthrough in her methodology of warping flesh to accept grafts. There upon, she came across her newest experiment. The flash that contained her own home made elixir based on what evidence she could find; this time using blood that was paid for rather than tortured out of and deliberately made under a magic circle against dungeon influences. Taking a deep breath she reconsiders the idea of drinking it herself, but.. it's the only way to really know if it works as intended. She herself steps into the circle and grabs the flask with both of her claws and drinks the entire thing.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
Orchids drinks the elixir she made, which according to my crafting sheet here was made with blood purchased from good outsiders worth 5k gp.
