    Surprise Round

Even without Thanquil's shout, Liselle would have been going for the Salamander... The firenewts had been basically no threat at all in the last room, after all!

So, step one: Try and ventilate the Salamander's organs. She'd go back to the basics here: Charge, Leap, smack in the head with a big, big sword. What's not to like?

    Spoiler
    Show

Standard-action charge, Leap Attack, Power Attack 5 points. -3 Attack, +20 damage, -2 AC. Liselle is using her +1 Greatsword for this initial attack.

    "Attack" - (1d20+12)[13] Critical Threat on a 31 or 32.
    "Crit Conf" - (1d20+17)[23]

    "Damage" - (4d6+30)[48]
    "Critical Damage" - (4d6+30)[42]

    Round 1
With her initial attack delivered, Liselle switches to her spiked chain. (Hoping for some AOOs like last time.) Of course, that won't stop her taking the opportunity to hit some of them first...
Spoiler: If the Salamander's still active
    Show
Liselle pulls out her Shadow Blade Technique, on the basis that if she lands both hits, the extra cold damage has to work well against these things, right?

She no longer has the charge/pounce bonuses, so her attack drops to -5, her AC returns to normal, and she no longer deals double PA damage.
    "Attack 1" - (1d20+9)[10]
    "Attack 2" - (1d20+9)[21] Critical threat on a 29.
    "Crit Conf" - (1d20+14)[33]

    "Damage" - (3d6+20)[30]
    "Crit Damage" - (3d6+20)[30]
    "Cold Damage" - (1d6)[3]

Spoiler: If the Salamander's already down
    Show
Liselle will pick a fire newt, move over next to it and hit it with Emerald Razor. If possible, she's positioning to give herself AOOs against the others if they try moving or grabbing stuff like weapons.
    "Touch Attack" - (1d20+14)[30]
Assuming they're still basically one-hit-kills for her, so won't bother rolling for damage.

    Spoiler: AOOs vs Firenewts
    Show

Just in case, Liselle's AOO rolls:
    "AOO" - (1d20+14)[19]
    "AOO" - (1d20+14)[29]
    "AOO" - (1d20+14)[28]
    "AOO" - (1d20+14)[24]

The Firenewts are wholly overwhelmed by the magic, dropping onto the ground unconscious.

The Salamander manages to shrug the magic off.

The team unleashes their opening salvo against the Salamander, however, its hide in addition to the chainmail is amazingly tough. The Salamander, stands up from the dice game, blocking Liselle's spiked chain attack of opportunity with a chainmailed arm before attempting to stab her with its spear.

    Salamander attacks Liselle:
    (1d20+11)[26]
    On a 31 (1d20+11)[30] to confirm

Deals (1d8+3)[9] damage and (1d6)[6] fire.
On a critical it deals an extra (2d8+6)[15]

The spear scrapes Liselle, but doesn't score a perfect hit. The flames from the spear tip wholly resisted by the group's fire resistance magic.

    Spoiler: Status and Conditions
    Show
The Salamander has taken 22 damage, and is moderately wounded.
    The three Firenewts are unconscious.

Liselle takes 9 damage and has 73 HP remaining.

Alright, seemed the crazy swings weren't working against this thing. Admittedly that first one had been her own fault, but the second attempt had actually been a decent swing...

So, techniques to boost accuracy! She'd start with the Emerald Razor...

    Spoiler
    Show
For her swift/free actions, Liselle's switching into Island of Blades stance (since Orchid has joined her in melee against the Salamander, this gives them both flanking bonuses against it, and since she's not moving around anymore she'd get no further benefit from Child of Shadows).

She's also designating the Salamander as her Dodge target, gaining a +1 dodge AC bonus against it.

With her move action, Liselle's switching weapons, back to her sword.

Then for her standard, she's keeping up the 5 point Power Attack, but using Emerald Razor to counter the accuracy issues.

So +2/-5 on her attack for a net 3 point penalty, but she's rolling against Touch AC so should come out ahead overall :)

Unless she gets her third Nat 1 in 3 turns of combat, anyway.

    "Touch Attack" - (1d20+12)[26] (Critical Threat on a 31/32)
    "Crit Conf" - (1d20+17)[26]

    "Damage" - (4d6+20)[36]

Liselle's spiked chain comes again, the Salamander smirks as it raises its armored arm to block the attack in the same way as it managed previously. However, that was precisely what Liselle was aiming for. The chain whips around the arm, wrapping itself around the creature's neck. With a yank, it tears apart the Salamander's throat. With a look of shock and a gurgle of blood, life departs from the creature's body and it drops onto the stone floor dully.

The team easily finishes off the helpless Firenewts. The spider still guards the next door. It seems the sparring going on in the next room stopped that group from hearing the commotion here.

    Each character gains 3,150 XP.

Searching the fallen and the room, you discover 1,000gp worth of assorted coins and a small totem embedded with 500 gp worth of rubies and 500 gp worth of diamonds. A substantial amount of the coinage was in a pile on the floor, presumably what they were gambling over with the dice.

There are no apparent exits to this room, other than back into the hallway.

    The three unopened doors remain.

"Well, one down, three to go." Not sparing the carnage they left a second glance Solstafir retrieved his harpoon and moved to the next door over, the arachnid zombie switching to the third one from the left to again cover their flank. Once everyone was in position he once more threw open the portal.

Having not actually been hurt this time around (the one hit she took wasn't enough to exhaust her Temp HP), Liselle doesn't have much prep to do before the next door - she switches back to Child of Shadows and her Spiked Chain so she's ready for the next charge, and manifests Offensive Precognition on herself (at it's basic +1 level) to boost her accuracy. Then she joins Solstafir by the door.

Solstafir swings the door open revealing what appears to be a training barracks. Three battered and burnt wooden training dummies stand propped up in a line near one of the walls.

Three Firenewts were practicing their combat skills against the dummies when they turn to face you. Another Salamander, apparently their supervisor, also turns to face you. Each is equipped much like their counterparts. Two massive (medium-sized) canines with rust-red fur mottled with soot black markings, teeth and claws begin to growl as they step more clearly into view from behind the Salamander, their glowing red eyes locking onto you as enemies. Hell-hounds!

Each of the enemies is equipped with chainmail and longsword or spear, just as before.

Unable to hear the battle over their own practice and having failed to detect your scent through the sturdy stone door, you've once more caught your foes off guard.

The Hellhound sidesteps the harpoon, as Solstafir moves up to the Salamander only to find the fiery creature surprisingly slippery.

A swarm of colors floods the room.

    Two Firenewts collapse, unconscious.

Both Hell-hounds are blinded and stunned for (1d4+1)[5] rounds.

Liselle uses her surprise round to partial charge the remaining Firenewt.

    (1d20+14)[23] to hit
On hit it deals (3d6+10)[20] damage.

As the Firenewt tries to regain its vision after the brilliant spray of colors, its vision is permanently ended as Liselle's spiked chain kills the creature outright.

The Salamander makes multiple attacks against Solstafir, knowing to attack anywhere else would open himself to the dwarf's vigilant combat style:
    Attack 1:
    (1d20+11)[27] to hit
    On a 31 (1d20+11)[27] to confirm

On a hit, it deals (1d8+3)[8] physical and (1d6)[4] fire
On a critical hit it deals (2d8+6)[13] more

All foes have been defeated except the Salamander. 5 rounds of stun is a death sentence for the hell-hounds.

The Salamander has taken 29 damage.

Solstafir's axe scores a solid blow, though Thanquil's arrows and Orchid's scythe are repelled by the creatures thick, chain-covered hide.

Liselle uses the Shadow Blade Technique, seeing the creature severely wounded and hoping to finish it off. Seeing her ally's attacks struggling to do real harm, she opts for accuracy over power:

    (1d20+14)[25] to hit
    (1d20+14)[22] to hit

On hit it finishes the creature off.

Overwhelmed the onslaught from the heroes of Solum, the Salamander goes down, cold blood seeping from the fresh wounds it has just received. The party makes quick work of the stunned hell-hounds and unconscious Firenewts.

    Each character gains 4,650 XP.

Taking quick stock of the room you find there is very little of interest, however, it seems the Salamander had quite a lot of coin on his person likely using it to entice the Firenewts to train more seriously. You find he has a large coin purse tucked into his armor containing 3,000gp.

Like the last room, this one contains no exits.

There are still two unopened doors in the length of the hallway.

The dwarf pushed a boot against the head of one of their slain foes, finding it limp and lifeless. "That colourful spell is really nasty. Well, once more and afterwards the spider can get a workout too." Again the necrocarnum zombie scooted one door over, then Solstafir waited for everyone to be in position to then open the third door.

Throwing open the third door, losing no time to avoid the expiration of the beneficial magics of the party, the portal reveals another chamber.

An old decorative stone well with a mounted head of a lizard sprays water into a shell-like basin. The stone lizard's arms stretch forward, a finely crafted longsword in its right hand and a roughly cut mirror shield on its left arm. The water rolls down the tongue, cascading over shells before filling the basin.

Standing in-between the well and your party is a large (large-size) muscular creature wearing heavy plate armor painted with intricate designs of red and yellow. You can make out the red and black scales through the narrow separations in the joints of his plate armor. He flourishes a large reddish, blackended spear. The weapon trails fire from its point as heat radiates from the creature, making the room feel oppressively hot.

The creature growls out in Ignan "To have made it to this hallowed ground must mean you have slain my comrades. Prepare yourselves for combat, Solumites. I will have vengeance."

It seems this enemy was aware of your coming.

    Initiative:
    Salamander (1d20+1)[15]

    Liselle (1d20+9)[17]
    Orchid (1d20+2)[16]
    Solstafir (1d20+9)[21]
    Thanquil (1d20+7)[20]

The party has initiative, the heavy armor restricting their foes movement.

"Hold up one moment please. What do you know of Solum?" Thanquil asks the Salamader in Ignan. Meanwhile he keeps an arrow knocked and ready to fire if the Salamander attacks.

Seeing the party stall in an effort to attempt diplomacy the creature snorts "Do you really think you're the first to come seeking to plunder our treasures? I won't wait for your reinforcements to arrive, I will send you to your afterlife here and now." the armored foe brandishes its flaming spear.

    (The party still has initiative)

Well, normally this would be something of an issue. Charging up to something with better reach than you (It was, after all, a large creature holding a longspear, so would easily beat even her spiked chain for reach) tended to end poorly. But hey, that's mundane thinking, for people who weren't able to turn invisible just long enough to complete their charge...

She knew the Salamander probably didn't understand her any more than she understood it (without Thanquil's translation, anyway), but she still couldn't stop herself adding a rather upbeat "You first!" as she launched the opening blow...

    Spoiler
    Show

Swift action: Cloak of Deception (turning herself invisible until the end of her turn).
Move action: Advance to a spot adjacent to the Salamander. As part of this action, Liselle picks the Salamander as her Dodge target, and switches to her Greatsword. She now has 27 AC and a 20% miss chance against vs attacks on the Salamander's turn, and is standing inside the minimum range of it's longspear. The AC rises to 31 if it manages an AOO against her despite the invisibility effect.
Standard action: With a full 5 points of Power Attack, Liselle uses Emerald Razor against the Salamander.

    Attack Modifiers:
    +16 (Base)
    +2 (Inspire Courage)
    +2 (Invisible vs Sighted Opponent)
    -5 (Power Attack)

    Damage Modifiers:
    +10 (Power Attack)
    +2 (Inspire Courage)
+1d6 (Sneak Attack, thanks to invisibility)

    "Touch Attack" - (1d20+15)[35] (Crit Threat on a 34+)
    "Crit Conf" - (1d20+20)[32]

    "Damage" - (4d6+22)[32]

"Well, you're lucky bud, they want you alive for now." The dwarven smith moved in on the salamander and struck at the back of its head with the flat of his axe to knock the creature senseless, heedless of the opening his movement provided. He knew he could trust his defenses.

Since I'll take an AoO anyway I might as well move into flanking with Liselle.
    attack - (1d20+9)[12] +2 IC, +2 Flanking, -4 nonlethal
    nonlethal damage - (2d8+7)[14] +1 Fire +1 Electricity
if I get hit on the AoO I will use Crusader's Strike for healing - (1d6+4)[8]. I'd also get a bonus on attack and damage from Furious Counterstrike.

"We'll be talking later then." Orchid says with a sigh, as she conjures grease under the salamander.

After translating the creatures last words and seeing the party move to attack, Thanquil draws and releases the arrow he had knocked to his bow and rapidly follows it up with a second shot if the creature hasn't fallen.

Salamander's Reflex save (1d20+10)[18] DC 15 vs going prone

Liselle vanishes. The Salamander's reaction hidden behind its full helm, her vicious attack comes from his blind spot, landing a brutal blow.

Taken back, the Salamander balances itself as arrows and harpoons come whistling towards it. While its plate armor provides it great protection from the attacks, one of the arrows lodges into a gap in the plate at one of the joints.

The creature hisses in pain. "This is the end for you." the creature blinks forward, teleporting a few feet into its desired position.
The head of the spear erupts into a torrent of flame as it performs a whirlwind attack against the entire party.

    Vs. Liselle
    (1d20+23)[39] to hit
    On a 43 (1d20+23)[35] to confirm

Dealing (1d8+9)[13] physical, plus (1d8)[6] fire
On a critical hit it deals an extra (2d8+18)[20] physical

    Vs. Orchid
    (1d20+23)[40] to hit
    On a 43 (1d20+23)[43] to confirm

Dealing (1d8+9)[14] physical, plus (1d8)[8] fire
On a critical hit it deals an extra (2d8+18)[24] physical

    Vs. Solstafir
    (1d20+23)[34] to hit
    On a 43 (1d20+23)[31] to confirm

Dealing (1d8+9)[14] physical, plus (1d8)[1] fire
On a critical hit it deals an extra (2d8+18)[21] physical

    Vs. Thanquil
    (1d20+23)[42] to hit
    On a 43 (1d20+23)[38] to confirm

Dealing (1d8+9)[16] physical, plus (1d8)[5] fire
On a critical hit it deals an extra (2d8+18)[28] physical

After the spin attack, the creature slams the butt of the spear into the ground and the heat radiating from its body dramatically increases, as if the damage its receiving is resulting in a build up of heat. The party's fire resistance is paying off well in this encounter.

    Spoiler: Status and Conditions
    Show
The Salamander has taken 80 damage.

Liselle takes 13 damage and has 50 HP remaining.
Orchid takes 14 damage and has 48 HP remaining.
Solstafir takes 1 damage and 10 points go into Steeley Resolve and has 55 HP remaining.
Thanquil takes 16 damage and has 17 HP remaining.

    The party may act.
