Liselle mows down the seriously injured Ettin, killing it instantly and turns her blade on the remaining Ettin, her greatsword leaving an enormous gash across the two-headed giant's fat belly. It would be more gruesome, but the blood freezes over preventing the things innards from falling out.

    Enemies initiative:
Ettin 2, despite the serious wounds, feels Solstafir's watchful eye upon it (Iron Guard's Glare). It takes a small step (5ft step) as one arm grabs a morning star off of one if its fallen comrades and it begins to try to flail the weapons wildly at the dwarf.

It does however, step into the swarm of bats.

After managing only one hit, the mantle of fire thaws its wound and a lot of its guts spill onto the ground. The light in the Ettin's eyes is nearly gone and it looks like a gentle breeze would end its fast fading life. The bat swarm can tidy this one up.

    Ettin 3 is dead.
Ettin 4 has taken 80 damage and is dead.

    Invisible enemy is unharmed.

There's a single standing Ettin that even the bats can kill with the blood sucking and an invisible enemy in the first chamber.

Levi ceases concentration and the swarm disappears. He makes sure he flies to a position where he can see the horned woman as clear as the sky and hovering.

"Our mysterious interloper shows up at last."

His next action is to manifest a new swarm of bats in the squares behind the priestess of Pelor and the squares behind that to attack the Horned Woman, positioning them so that he does not catch allies in the squares if they are hovering above.

    "Invisible Horned Woman behind Abigail!"

Despite taking a solid blow from an ettin Solstafir seemed completely uninjured, much unlike the giant suffering under the scorching retribution of the blue flames wrapping around the dwarf's body. He abandoned his axe and instead reached for a bone-shafted, oversized harpoon to take aim at the invisible foe outlined by Orchid's spell. Only then did the pristine skin where the ettin's weapon connected give way to a bruise several shades darker than his copper skin.

The zombified spider meanwhile was much more secure on its eight legs and closed the distance to the mysterious woman, its mandibles biting into her collar to then violently whip around and uproot her from the frozen ground.

Well, on the one hand, here's an enemy she'd failed to notice while engaging with the ettins. It's using some kind of invisibility, too, so who knows what sort of tricks it has up it's sleeve?

On the other hand... it's lying on the floor next to her and Solstafir. Not the safest of places to be on your arse during a fight.

Well, a target's a target. Considering how well her allies had set this up, it'd be almost rude of her not to slice this one open.

Sister Albigale had just finished mending Liselle’s wounds when her her breath began to catch in her throat, beginning to cough uncontrollably she is terrified as she feels a blade at her back as she is powerless to protect herself at this moment. However as she watches the blade fly away from her body and those she is supposed to keep alive deal with the previously unseen enemy that was now covered in a spell made to make it all but impossible to hide she thanks Pelor for timely intervention. Looking to the outline of a figure Sister Abigale speaks up , her voice still sounding a bit weak. "I don't know who you are or why you are here however as you can see you have been defeated. I cannot promise you that those with me will spare your life, as it is the only way out, however I can promise that they will make it painless if you stop and tell us a bit about this place. For example how did you all know we would be coming from there at that moment?" she asks curious if perhaps the dungeon itself alerted those they were about to encounter that they would be arriving.

It was almost as if it was thirsty for death, or trying to create something or someone. Looking up to the others she asks, "Have any of you ever once been able to talk to one of the people who live in the Dungeon before? I am starting to wounder in my old age if it is perhaps some sort of living being that demands sacrifice, or perhaps it is trying to forge the Delvers into something for a threat we still are unaware of." the older woman states as she closes the eyes of her enemy before standing up to rejoin the others.

The prone foe is slain instantly as Alastair and Liselle bring their blades down on her. The invisibility ends and a dead woman with horns, hooves, mottled red and purple skin and yellow eyes like an animal lays dead at your feet.

Those with Kn: Planes immediately recognize her as a Tiefling.

    Each character gains 9,900 XP.

    Loot:

The Ettins carried nothing of real interest (for each Ettin, 1 mundane morningstar, javelin, and hide armor)

    • +1 Mithral Chain Shirt
    • Amulet of natural Armor +1
    • Ring of protection +1
    • +1 composite shortbow (+2 Str bonus)
    • 2 potions of cure light wounds
    • A small ring of keys
    • Hoinnia's Assassination Rapier (market price 24,000gp)

    Spoiler: Assassination Rapier
    Show
This +1 Rapier has 5 charges which renew each day at dawn.
As a swift action, you can consume any number of charges for the following effects at caster level 5:
3 charges - Greater Invisibility self (lasts 5 rounds)
1 charge - True Strike self (lasts 5 rounds or until next attack, whichever happens first)
1 charge - Silence self (lasts 5 rounds)
1 charge - teleport up to 20 feet, requires line of sight and line of effect
1 charge - gain +1d6 sneak attack (lasts 5 rounds or until next attack, whichever happens first)

You can choose one option multiple times as long as there are sufficient charges. E.g. you could expend all charges to gain +5d6 sneak attack or +3d6 and teleport 40ft, or gain Greater Invisibility, True Strike, and Silence.

Having cleared the area of any immediate threats, the group now gets a better picture of the room which contained the Ettins. Four large cots, some with tiny icicles hanging from them, are suspended at the far side in the groove of the curved far wall. The Ettin's quarters lack of anything of particular note other than some bones and refuse pushed into a pile against the wall, perhaps from the two-headed giants' most recent meal. There is an odorous funk about the area, as if it was lived in by four large creatures that didn't have much regard for hygiene for some time.

This room is a bit smaller than the first one in which you appeared, with flat walls on the left and right much closer together than the wide spread of the semi-circle of the previous room. The two walls also each boast an icy door. However, one has clearly been used and seems nearly free of ice, while the other is coated in ice and probably hasn't seen use in some time.

There are two obvious ways forward:
    • Non-frozen door
    • Frozen door

Looking upon the dead tiefling lying dead upon the ground Sister Abigale looks up at all of them. "Please try to remember this could have been one of us, had we not been able to complete the dungeon and lost our escape stone for those of you who carry one. She was our enemy today but she could have been a friend in a different life. I will not tell you why killing things found in the dungeon is bad, after all if people do not delve our own home becomes the battleground in which a lot of innocents are lost. But remember this one, and the many other humanoids that are no doubt just protecting what they love and call family as well when we do battle." the priests tells the group as she gets out of the way so that the others may claim their justly earned rewards. After all the dead had no need of such tools, but if you were to rob from the dead you should at least give them a proper funeral. "Is there any way for us to burn the bodies as we go? I would normally offer to dig them a hole in a Dungeon that allowed for such, but this frozen one will not allow for such. And the dead still deserve to be respected." she explains to the others, wondering if they had any way to do as she asked, if not she would have to make a point to have someone come with them next delve whos sol purpose was to help her take care of the dead properly.

She wouldn't normally have bothered to ask, but they had fresh delvers along this time, so... yeah, best to make sure everyone knew she wasn't just claiming it all as hers.

"We actually have run into former delvers before, " Liselle notes, "And plenty of us just 'disappear' each time. Not us, us - we only needed replacements 'cause our bard retired between delves - but delvers in general, I mean. Some don't make it back - others taste a dungeon fruit too many, and become... lost... The thing to remember is, just because they used to be like us, doesn't mean they still are. If you run into a stranger down here, you can't expect it to be friendly. No matter where they came from.

Not sure if the dungeon really counts as living, but there is a voice down here... One that admitted to crafting these 'chambers', apparently as some form of hobby. At least, that was how it was recounted to me; whatever language it spoke in, I never learned. Not exactly common knowledge up in Solum, but now you're down here... well, you'll hear it yourself in a delve or two.

Anyway, mind giving me a top-up before we try the next door, Ms Healer?
    "

The cure mid-battle had helped, true, but she had taken three blows from the Ettins, and wasn't entirely healed yet.

With the looting finished, Liselle would be heading over to check the unfrozen door. They'd try the frozen one too, eventually, but it was more sensible to clear out the areas whose inhabitants could easily come up behind them first, before going after the ones that were sealed in...

Levi cancels his swarm. He watches it vanish back into the nothingness as the female horned humanoid crashing down to the frost-filled ground, deceased. When the party loots the bodies for items, he helps then shies away from the corpses. He turns to the priestess.

"From what I heard of the Dungeon from the delvers, it is live or die. While I approve of your non-violent approach and empathy to the residents and delvers, I am not suicidal to use diplomacy here knowing there is a high chance of it blowing up in our faces."

    He turns to Liselle.

"I will take the potions if no one objects. By the way, you can top yourself up, Liselle. Just will the boon I gave you to heal yourself. It is periodic healing so it will take some time to patch you up. If it is not enough to recover your vitality to full, tell me so I can give you more. The same applies to all of you. I will take care of the healing outside of combat. Our healers should prioritize their healing energies for the moments we need direct healing in combat."

    The halfling shrugs at Alistar.

If she wasn't invisible I'd advise you to look in her eyes. Many times you can see the corrupting power of the Dungeon there burning bright as a bonfire. Everything we have found down here so far was already gone, either in body or mind. The only thing I know of to come back intact after prolonged exposure to the Dungeon was my people." The fireblood dwarves made the only race of Solum that could be said to be natives of the Dungeon, their ancestors having entered as a party of dwarves long believed lost, only for their dragonblooded offspring to emerge generations later. If not for their unrivaled craftsmanship they might be regarded with fear, but the secrets of the forge they brought along with them on their ascent turned uncertainty to mystery and trepidation to legend. It was just the luck of this group of Delvers that their rare gift of a fireblood was, by all reasonable measures, a madman who was already eyeing the tiefling woman with the measured glance of a taxidermist and considering a pair of drinking horns.

With the others occupied in examining the loot Solstafir busied himself bagging the ettins, an awkward process that looked several kinds of wrong with the twinheaded giants disappearing into extradimensional storage smaller than their skull when closed. But with five Delves under his belt the process was well familiar by now.

"In truth I had been taking a short break from Delves, trying to find an apprentice to carry on my life's work as well as taking care of the family back home. One of the reasons I came back was to make sure my family is taken care of even after I am gone. So to answer your question I am unsure how long this Dungeon will be, as for burning the bodies, setting them on fire and leaving would suffice for me, though I can understand if we do not have the time." she admits, understanding that their protections would only last so long and that time was a precious thing in the Dungeon.

As Liselle explains that they have encountered others before in a Dungeon and seen some go feral the old priestess seems bothered by this. "I will try to remember that Liselle, on my first delve as a child I lost a lot of family to the dungeon because we forgot that this place was dangerous. However it never hurts to try and turn our enemies on one another so that this way we conserve our own strength. I am a newcomer to your group however and will leave such matters up to whomever is the leader. If they believe the person may be able to be reasoned with I will try, fair?" Abigale asks hoping to find a compromise.

"Wait it has a voice!" Sister Abigale says, not with alarm, but more a mixture of excitement and curiosity. If it could speak that meant it could be reasoned with, or whomever created it. Perhaps they would have her cure, or help her get it. Then she wouldn't have to worry about her family no more. "Why of course I'll get right to that." Sister Abigale says before hearing Levi tell the others that they could use what he had done to heal themselves up. "That is amazingly useful Levi, I have a similar power, however it only allows me to bring someone back up to about half their fighting capabilities before it stops working. To conserve both of our powers perhaps we could work together out of combat, while during combat I will focus all of my powers on trying to keep you all standing. Deal?" she asks Levi.

"I was merely thinking of using it to have us fight less foes. For example are all people who live in the dungeon together, or are their different factions? Are they like a hivemind working towards a mutual goal, well besides kill us, or do they have individual motives? If it is the later I could perhaps sway them into helping us take out those they are against, this would weaken them as well as other enemies of ours, while also letting us reserve our own strength. I am here to make sure you all survive, so if you all believe it is a bad idea I will not try to do so while in the dungeon."

Listening to Solstafir's explanation the priestess nods her head in understanding. In truth she knew very little about the fireblooded dwarves of Solum as she spent all of her time in the poor district. And so while the others busied themselves with loot she in turn helped Solstafir pack the ettins into the bag, after all the sooner they were done the sooner they could move on to the unfrozen door.

Orchid gives the sister a look of annoyance leading to a small outburst from her.

"She's already too far gone. Maybe if there was something left, something I've experienced before, then I would be more sympathetic. But right now they she didn't seem to have much in the way of anything. Even the salamanders we fight last time were more sympathetic than the tiefling!"

She then turns away from the sister.

"Leave that to Solstafir. My metabolic fire is a synthetic copy of a Silver Dragon's which is frost instead of flame. I also exude a healing aura. It only heals up to a certain point however."
    she states.

Checking the non-frozen door, it seems to be locked, though one of the keys from the Tiefling's ring of keys unlocks it.

This chamber is, surprisingly, comfortably warm. A blue haze with a faintly sulfurous odor fills the air. A brazier filled with smoldering coals seems to be the source of this effect. Next to the brazier stands a wooden crate filled with brownish coal.

The room is roughly square and has a singular window, though ice seems to be trying to creep in through that singular point of lessened insulation, so thick as to be entirely opaque.

Some kind of sagging canvas tarp forms a ceiling of sorts that hangs perhaps 20ft above the floor. A few furs serve as rugs, and a bed heaped with more furs stands against a wall. A wardrobe made of rough planks and a footstool round out the furnishings.

The furs aren't exactly clean but they're reasonably well made and would fetch a decent price to a collector in Solum. (600gp)

The crafters recognize the coal as lignite, a useful material material used as an option for fuel in forges or to heat homes during the winter. (1,400gp worth)

Checking above the tarp reveals the rafters. Some of the icicles here were also knocked down and are in a pile on top of the tarp.

Liselle (Search take 10) quickly notices that underneath the the burning coals in the brazier is a key hole, emptying it out and utilizing the ring of keys it opens to reveal a box of potions.

There seem to be three missing vials from the box which normally holds 24 potions. Working together, the group identifies the following potions:

    • 12 Potions of Water Breathing
    • 4 Potions of Protection From Foe (the spell is Protection From Evil but it works against any enemy)
    • 5 Potions of Cure Light Wounds

Based on the empty slots, it looks like the two potions on the Tiefling's corpse were from this stash, and she must have imbibed a Potion of Protection From Foe.

Spoiler: All the loot in one place for easy reference
    Show
    2,000gp
    12 Potions of Water Breathing
4 Potions of Protection From Foe
5 Potions of Cure Light Wounds

There are no obvious ways forward from this room, so the group thaws the frozen door and proceeds that way.

Once the frozen door is open, a great deal of icy water sloshes out from behind the door, previously trapped. It's enough to fill the Ettin's chambers with about about a half inch / or just over a centimeter of water. There's a stairwell down, however it is completely flooded. It seems you'll have to swim to proceed.

"We can actually saves those for just in case- I made this recently!" Orchid exclaims, bringing out one of her few scrolls of water breathing.

"One of these should last each of us about-" Orchid does some quick math in her head.

"One and a half hours. We can split the potions evenly among us and then use them as needed. My body is also suited for swimming well, so I can anyone that has issues with it."

A ponderous sigh escaped Solstafir's lips, his demeanor unhappy but resigned to his fate. "I feared it would be something like this. I'll need something to protect me from the cold, my shield is doing that right now." The massive slab of chitin cut from a towering arachnid would be far too unwieldy for swimming, so he slipped out of its straps and stored it in their handy extradimensional space. As they prepared for their underwater journey he sent his zombified spider ahead to spend a minute testing the waters before returning to the group, ostensibly to discover hidden enemies but mostly to find out whether an oversized spider has any capacity of swimming at all. If it did, he'd be happy enough to let his minion do the task while he just held on to it.

    Spoiler

Before I forget it, the spider took 12 damage but positive energy effects like Cure spells would damage it further instead of healing. Fast Healing from the Devotion or Lesser Vigor would work though.

When the Sister mentions her trek into the Dungeon as a child, Levi gives a subtle wince when Abigail was facing Liselle. The following topic about healing with Abigail and Orchid introducing their healing touch and healing aura brings a smile to his face.

"That accelerates the healing process. I revise my statement. We..."

The halfling gestures to himself, Orchid and Abigail.

"...will take care of out of combat healing."

He stays silent as the priestess closes the discussion to her solution to problems. The opening of furnished chamber directs his attention to the enemies' spoil for a second. The rest of the time he spends looting with the others. Levi checks every inch of the room for danger with a bat swarm prior to examination of the next room. The sudden rush of the water from the flooded room as the door thaws causes him to jump and fly backwards to prevent the waters from reaching him. Once the waters settle, Levi gazes at the submerged stairway as Alistar's question.

"Huh? Looks like we are going for a swim."

He nods at Orchid's suggestion to distributing the water breathing potion to each member in equal portions and using her scrolls instead of the potions for their adventure below.

"When you are done healing yourself, Liselle, I will renew the blessing I gave you."

    Spoiler: OOC

"Dive first. Once you are below, keep some distance from me because the next thing I am going to do will hinder sight. I will be lagging behind a bit."

Levi dives last, shrouded by darkness.

Sister Abigale had little to do while no one was harmed and so spent her time trying to make herself as useful as she could, aiding the others in their search of the room when they began.

When the group dethaws the frozen door and water rushes in the priestess of Pelor shows her first sign of being slightly cold, though still bearable, as the water wash over her sandal covered feet. "Thank you Orchid." Sister Abigale says as she accepts the spell the woman casts on all of them. The priestess had prepared for a broader range of healing as she was unaware of what the group she was being asked to protect could do. However now she wonders if perhaps she was to broad in her preparations as Orchid seemed to have most things covered, and even some she didn't think to have herself. "I am not bad at swimming, I am not good either though. Thankfully the glow that constantly surrounds me, should in theory light up the immediate area around us." she explains hoping her own light would not interact with Levi's in a negative way.

The group begins to swim down to the next level. The water, while freezing cold, is fortunately very calm allowing easy swimming.

There's a small chamber branching off from the stairwell with three stone doors - two smaller doors on the left and right and a large double door straight ahead from the stairwell. There doesn't seem to be much of note in this entryway chamber.

There are four apparent ways forward:

    • Big double door
    • Left door
    • Right door
    • Proceed further down the stairwell.

Now underwater, it's harder to speak to each other, but fortunately gestures are still sufficient for simple communication.
