Taking advantage of his new minion's swimming prowess Solstafir shot through the water, propelled by the undead merrow with his left arm wrapped tight around its neck. His path could not be more clear—he had to strike at the strongest of foes present. The zombie's strokes brought the unequal pair face to face with the winged merrow, changed by fiendish blood no less than the other had been changed by the touch of Necrocarnum. Axe and scimitar lashed out in unison, though the muted mind of the fallen seafolk could not match the dwarf's sheer eagerness.

The master merrow pulled Solstafir into its winged embrace, but instead of struggling or trying to escape the dwarf put his limbs around it and pulled only tighter, grinding the spikes of his armor into its body. For once, Liselle's full-power attacks hadn't been too wild to make contact! --With the merrows, at least. The Hag remained stubbornly un-splattered around the area. She'd have to try another special trick to hit the hag, and hope the merrows were distracted enough to let her mince the other four as well... But hey, she had a trick she'd been hoping to try out for that one...

    Spoiler: Attacks and AOOs
    Show

Now that she's done moving, Liselle is switching into Punishing Stance for the extra die of damage. She's keeping her Power Attack at -6/+12, and she's activating Karmic Strike (allowing her to make AOOs against anyone that hits her), with a -4 AC penalty. I'm going to assume that she and Alistair count as flanking the hag by now, but I won't include flanking bonuses or Sneak Attack rolls in the AOOs because those will probably be against the Merrows.

Liselle will be using the Shadow Blade Technique against the Hag. I doubt the cold damage is worth anything down here, so I'll be taking the better roll, whichever it is.

Piranhas swarm on the two most powerful foes, biting them and drawing more blood.

Alistair makes two quick attacks against the burly merrow, but its skin is so thick the foe is unfazed.

Orchid moves and claws against the Hag, though she wiggles strangely narrowly avoiding the Orchid's claws.

The zombie merrow slashes at the burly merrow attempting to finish it off, but isn't able to cut through the thing's thick hide.

Solstafir manages to bash the burly merrow across the head with a resounding blow. Blood spurts from the foe's nose and mouth and its head seems to be a bit misshapen now, electricity crackles as it electrocutes the surrounding area, frying the precious contents of the dwarf's foes' skull. Gray matter leaks out from the opening created in the side of its head by blunt force trauma.

Liselle swings her chain, successfully wrapping it around the Hag. A quick pull tears the creature apart, a cloud of visceral ichor expands from the now mutilated corpse.

It frankly doesn't take long for the team to clear up the remaining trash merrows, who pose little legitimate thread (we're skipping cleaning up the minions, it's not worth the time).

The magical disguise on the burly merrow wears off upon its death, revealing it was actually a half-fiend/half-annis. A more combat oriented type of hag.

Searching the fallen foes and the five small surrounding chambers reveals a good deal of loot. Four of the chambers seem to be basic barracks chambers though the one where the Hags were is a rather lavish chamber, which has a magic sword on a display on the wall.

    • 6,000gp of coins and valuables
    • Bracers of Armor +1
    • Ring of Protection +1
    • Arcane Scroll of Mage Armor
    • Arcane Scroll of Read Magic, Grease, Undetectable Alignment
    • Divine Scroll of Wind Wall
    • +1 Defending Longsword
    • Potion of Blur
    • Potion of Lesser Restoration
    • 2x Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds
    • Potion of Cure Light Wounds

The team hears the characteristic whoosh of the Portal home opening above, which carries surprisingly well through the water. Knowing that all of the foes are dead, the team descends to the lower floors and explores carefully, searching for anything useful.

The floor below seems to have a lavish chamber, pantry and kitchen. The recoverable spices and similar exotic food items have been included in the loot list as valuables. The lavish chamber is devoid of useful loot, filled mostly with waterlogged furniture and strange odds and ends with no real value.

The final and lowest floor has two chambers one which appears to be an armory, which is nearly empty other than a few mundane longspears and some hide armor. It looks like this is where the merrows' equipment is stored while not in use. The second chamber is much more interesting:

There's a pocket of air in this chamber which leads up to a large circle of perfectly flat, mirror-sheen ice filled with complete and utter darkness. Not even Tenebrous' See Through Darkness ability allows Levi to see past it, as if it's either a black wall or an infinite void. Glancing into the impressively reflective ice ring reflects a version of yourself. A twisted, frozen and dead version of yourself. The team veteran's recognize the tell-tale signs of a Death Door.

There are two obvious ways to proceed:
    • Accept the challenge and fight whatever lies behind the Death Door.
    • Swim to the top of the tower and return to the Solum through the portal to safety.

"Alright, for those of you who are new: This is a Death Door. Whatever's beyond it is gonna be a lot tougher than the stuff we just fought, and there's no coming back once we pass through. We make it back to Solum, or we die in there.

I don't particularly care if we go through or not, 'cause I don't eat the Dungeon Fruits and the folks back in Solum don't knock any time off my sentence for clearing these.

But if the rest of you want to try it - and I'm sure Solstafir's already drooling at the thought of what kind of overpowered zombies he can make this time - I'll come, too. Got a certain amount of interest in not getting my party killed, you see...

Oh, Dungeon Fruits. If you find any, I wouldn't recommend eating 'em. They give you power, but can do... strange things to you in return. Just train the regular way. Trust me, it's safer.
    "

Liselle abstains from the voting on challenging the Death Door.

After the battle is done Sister Abigale goes about using her powers to heal everyone back up to half their health before asking her allies if they could top the others off as they agreed upon. Before moving on to help the others explore the area, making herself useful when needed.

When the group arrives at the "Death Door" the priestess of Pelor is confused, she thinks she had seen one of these before when she and her brothers and sisters first went on their mission so long ago but it was hazy and unclear after so long a time had passed. "I should still be able to keep you all able to fight for at least one or two more battles with ease. After that it may get a little dicy, but from what I have seen I believe we should be capable of doing this." Abigale says, willing to at least try a death door. If they succeeded it would mean she could provide more for the poor district, and perhaps she could find her cure in one of them as well.

"This is the second time I have heard someone say Dungeon fruit today, however I have never heard of them before, what are they? Are they actual fruit found in the dungeon? And what kinda effects do they have on people?" she asks curious.

"They are actual fruit that you might find beyond the Death Door... if you are 'lucky'. Also down to luck is exactly what kind of boon they will give you... and how many you can eat before you mutate, lose your sanity, or die. Though there was, at least, speculation that how well we 'perform' beyond the door has an effect on how likely there are to be side effects... Still not something I'd care to risk trying.

But it's your life and body, Sister, and it's not like someone who tried and failed to rob a noble's mansion is the best source of life advice...

"No its not that Liselle, I think I have eaten one before. Mind you long ago when I was still young. You see my brothers and sisters on our first Dungeon spent a lot of time inside, it was a beautiful meadow like area and well when you grow up poor it seemed like the perfect escape."

"As for a boon, I don't think I ever got one, then again I have never heard the term Dungeon fruit before. However I do know I am dying and no magical or mundane means have been able to cure it. Its some kind of curse to my knowledge, and all research points to me finding a cure in the dungeon." Abigale explains, hoping she would follow the priestess trail of thought into thinking perhaps its the fruit that has made her sick as she and her family didn't do well at all.

"Just don't dive into the next tavern and go into a drunken rave about all this. The big hats want to be hush hush about these fruits offered by some higher creature in the Dungeon and we wouldn't be telling ya about it if we didn't come face to face with the death door already. Unless the other Delvers are really good at keeping their mouth shut these things are supposed to be incredibly rare, and most who try don't live to tell the tale." A literal altar wrought from the ravaged limbs of lost Delvers might have been a clear enough warning. In retrospect, it was a wonder they all agreed to face the ominous portal back then. "Whatever's summoning these doors, I think our original group attracted its interest when on our very first Delve we faced and overcame its challenge. If the heat's too much for you, go home and ask for a transfer to another group. As for me, I found the challenges to be worthwhile." Solstafir tapped the exoskeleton of his plate, then the chitin tower shield. And sooner or later, I will come to the fiend itself behind all this, see what i can make from his hide."

Solstafir went through his harpoons, choosing which one to start with. His gauntleted fingers brushed over the clean white bone of the haft; the femur of the ettin from the very first time he faced the menace of a Death Door. Yes, this one would do nicely. "Well, then, see you on the other side."

Upon touching the door, the inky blackness seems to expand encompassing the entire team. A voice seems to emanate from everywhere and nowhere. It speaks in Infernal (if your character understands Infernal, open the spoiler below)

    Spoiler: The Infernal Voice

"You've finally returned. I've looked forward to this, how will you handle this challenge? Of course, if you overcome it, you will be rewarded."

The opaque darkness slides away, leaving you in utter darkness.

For those who can see in darkness innately the chamber appears to be a 200ft^2 200x200 ft chamber of ice 50ft tall. No natural light is penetrating into this completely sealed chamber. The air within is supernaturally cold dealing (2d6)[5] cold damage and (1d6)[1] untyped damage, which will repeat every round.

The floor being made purely of ice is also quite a hindrance, especially given the size of the chamber:

Those who can see in darkness see twenty pairs of eyes briefly glance out of the darkness, it seems these creatures are inside of the ice walls.

    Initiative:

    Liselle (1d20+14)[29]
    Orchid (1d20+2)[22]
    Solstafir (1d20+9)[12]

The party has initiative (Alistair has a higher init modifier and thus wins the tie).

"Yes, yes, reward for winning." Orchid comments almost dismissively to the voice as she mentally commands the spare hand on her waist to fetch her bow from her pack and pass it to her. After that, Orchid notches her single raptor arrow.
