Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Greetings Dark Seeker, and welcome back to the world of Call of Cthulhu, a world of horror, mystery, and wonder. Here you shall take on the role of an intrepid Investigator of the Unknown (or Investigator for short), while I shall be the Keeper of Arcane Lore (or the Keeper).
Now that you've understood the basic rules and themeatic aspects of the game, having played the introductory adventure. Prepare to journey onto your first freeform scenario -- Paper Chase! This is a mystery set in 1921 where you are the main character. For the purposes of guiding you, I may very rarely make small notes at the bottom of my posts, but these will be far more rare than before, so I hope you're prepared to think for yourself!
Anyway, without further ado, tuck yourself in, grab a bowl of popcorn, and join the In-Character!

Thanks, looking forward to it! I'll try and get up a post before I head off, but if I don't I'll definitely have one for you tomorrow.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
I'm vaguely aware of 7th edition's rules to spend luck. Is there anyway to gain luck back, or is it a one time thing?

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
So I'm not actually introducing Spending Luck until a bit later, but technically the basic rules for it are as follows: You may spend Luck on a 1-for-1 basis on any skill or characteristic roll (so not Sanity, Luck, or Damage rolls). At the end of a scenario, you make an improvement roll, just like if you had succeeded in a skill for it.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Erm... you have no idea who or where Mary is.
Thomas never actually stated that she was his maid or anything.
In fact, the house appears to be empty save you and Thomas.Last edited by zingbobco000; 2019-11-28 at 11:35 AM.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Oops, sorry, assumed she was his servant. I'll edit my post, but basically he's going to spend the day going through the library.

All good, I just wanted to clarify as it seemed you had made that assumption.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Uh, yikes. Can I change my mind and try a different approach? I understand if you rule it's what Paul said he'd so I have to follow through.
My initial idea was to go buy him something to drink, but then I remembered this was prohibition and I don't know the town well enough to easily sniff out the bootleggers.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Hmmmm... for now, I guess I'll allow it.
For the record, this is a completely valid approach. The "if that's how you're going to go about this" was more me thinking about which conversational approach you're taking.
However, if you're thinking about heading into town trying to find booze...
Spoiler: Successful Know (Education) RollYou recall that oftentimes Italian restaurants would fragrantly disobey prohibition law in order to construct a "truly Italian meal." You also recall spotting a small Italian diner in town by the Advertiser.Spoiler: Failed Know (Education) RollPlease give me a Luck roll (for posterity's sake).Last edited by zingbobco000; 2019-11-29 at 02:20 AM.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Ah, understood. I admit I was a little worried the GM thought I was about to do something boneheaded. I had visions of pushing the roll and being beaten to death by a shovel.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
I have to ask, am I taking a convoluted route through this scenario? I feel like I missed something and went way off the rails. I don't mind; I'm having fun, and it makes sense for Paul's first real investigation. I just hope I'm not causing a lot of extra work for you.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Nope! You're all good, don't worry. Also, again: I can adapt. That's sorta in my job description. I had one crazy game of this, which I can show to you once you're done to see an example of something that went kinda off the rails there (if anything this is one of my more straightforward games).

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Good to know. And I'm glad you're enjoying as well. :) I'm getting visions of this being an old adventure game: Paul needs to go to the restaurant and eat a meal to get the flask that he can give to the gardener to-- well, you get the idea.
I'll look forward to reading up on the other's adventures after this, I had no idea I missed so much during the last game and it was fun to compare with.Last edited by Dark Seeker; 2019-11-29 at 02:47 AM.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Yeah, it's a little bit like that, but it's a lot more open-ended too. Don't be afraid to check out all the nooks and crannies though, you never know what you might find.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Would it be possible to charm a librarian into helping me, maybe getting me a bonus die on my Library Use roll?

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Given that that’s an Extreme Success, there’s no need for a Charm roll. Someone is just willing to help, so go ahead and gain a bonus die.

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
Rolled Charm and barely succeeded. If it's alright with you, I'll keep that roll for library use and roll a bonus die for it:

Pushing a roll generally has worse consequences than just wasting time (as you’ll soon see)...

Re: Dark Seeker's Paper Chase OOC
If this story would have ended with Paul hauled off to jail over alcohol possession I would have had to laugh.
