Default Re: Chronicles of A Twisted Ascension IC

@Randa: No way you are ending trapped and dead in this place.

Who knows how noble this woman and her team were, but it didn't pay off in the end. The others need to trust your skills now, as you pocket the dusty cobweb filled valve and blow on it, getting some dust particles in your face- a minor itch.

If this thing was left here. And this is a sewer... it might assist you in your travels before you can find an exit. These old sewers must have a way to be operated in some way. This valve simply might be it.

And then you reach the metal bridge crossing the cistern. You could continue forward in your path, but who knows how much deeper these tunnels go. Might as well examine what's on the other side as you raise your hand and ask for them to wait as you place your foot on the grates.

It causes the bridge to creak, if only slightly. It must've been built a long time ago, but it should get you to the other side. Of course, you aren't walking around with an armory on your shoulders, unlike a few in your company, so who knows how it goes for them.

And so, with a twist of your ring, your entire self disappears from view and you look at the group.

Clueless city folk: It's well known that Connor, the Almighty Steward of the City of Power, outlawed items of this nature and chances are they have never seen anyone pull this stunt in a while. If ever.

The other four stay at the bridge's edge as you begin walking across it, making as little noise as you can- not an easy task when the damn bridge creaks after each step, but you manage to be as silent as a mouse- and just as unseen.

This bridge is long. Francisco's light won't shed further and your own orc sight can only see so far before spotting more of this bridge. The cistern must be bigger than you thought, but there might be something on the other side as you walk about sixty feet and look below at the dark fetid waters.

More of those strange eggs bob below the bridge, easily seen through the grates. As big as coconuts and bobbing without a care amidst the liquid filth.

Of note, a sound off in the distance, way over the bridge. Faint, though:

    That of chains.

It is then that a cold shudder goes down your spine as a woman's voice can be heard in your mind, speaking in a haughty tone:

What do we have here? A hybrid! How did you manage to worm yourself down to this place? No matter. The flawed genetic offspring of a homo sapiens and a brutish and under developed race such as the homo brutus... what a pathetic display of talent at a cellular level.

I thought your kind were kept in check above. It is time they were painfully reminded. Good bye...

It's a laughter that echoes through your mind, but who the hell was that?

It is then that you feel it before you hear it. Claws that rip and attempt to hold your arms as spread as possible. The sound of fangs clacking way too close to your face, accompanied by caustic breath in your face and the flutter of wings. Something is attacking you. Something you cannot see... but it clearly can see you!

You can hear more buzzing around you. Whether you have been held tight by this unseen attacker, it is definitely not alone.

@The Party: Everyone can hear buzzing and clacks off in the dark as Lendra takes a step on the grated bridge and aims her blade at the dark.

"She is not safe... ! Randa is in danger!""

It would seem they waited to pick off one by one. But can you make it deeper into the bridge and assist the little smuggler?

Randa tries not to scream. She tries. She lets her ring's power drop if only so the others can see and or save her, just in time to take an awful hit and she instinctively tries to drop and twist free of it, however difficult that may be.

And the acid. Gods damn the acid. She's probably going to scream if that bile touches her.

But she's not entirely unarmed, and though it's not at the best angle she slams her blade upwards, aiming under the creature's jaw.

@Randa: Maybe this is why other rogues have decided not to come down to the sewers.

A trained squad of soldiers from the City met a terrible fate down here and they were prepared. Davish mentioned that you are the army down here and yet, as your limbs are squeezed hard and acid vomit corrodes your face and chest, you manage to turn your head back...

The man with the big blade isn't coming to your help. None are! You may not have large blades like his- which in this case is a good thing, as you swing your dagger at your unseen attacker... only for the blade to miss. The power you placed in the blade remains, but if you cannot break free and see your opponent...

How to get out of this one?

    Round 1

@The Party: Maybe it's the foreboding dread these sewers bring about. Perhaps the pungent smell of the place, but neither Laura or Davish are getting on that bridge, causing Lendra to look at Francisco.

"I need you to get closer with me in tandem. Without a powerful light source such as yours, I may not be able to fight reliably in that bridge and Randa is too far away now to have a clear sight."

@Randa: The damn bug never intends to let loose of you, as its claws dig deeper into your arm and you can hear quick clacking from its mandibles way too close to your face.

@Francisco: Who knows why the other two aren’t assisting...

But you and Lendra can. Given what you have read about the dangers here and what befell the last group that ventured into the sewers, the blessing of Pelor should grant you an incredible advantage.

The smelly saffron mix, smeared over your eyes may not be the most elegant process, but as the quick prayer to the Almighty allows you to see the unseen, you step forward towards the grated bridge with Lendra by your side and grip your mace:

What in all that’s good and wholesome dwells down here? They are insects... but unlike any you have ever seen topside or even read about. As big as a man, but that’s where any similarity ends.

One has latched on to Randa and is attempting to rip her arms apart. Two more have effectively flanked the half orc and are ripping her sides apart, eager to get to the juicy entrails inside.

Two more balance themselves on the sides of the metal bridge like chitinous gargoyles and turn their blank soulless eyes at you and Lendra, clicking their mandibles and frothing with bile and fluttering their wings excitedly.

Lendra stands by your side and furrows her brow, since your light source allows her to see Randa, but not her assailants.

    “How many, father?”

@Laura: You’re not losing anymore people in this place.

Lendra and Francisco aren’t as fast as you and so, you bolt past them, causing the grated bridge to creak under weight and speed.

You catch on to Randa, whose body contorts against her will and blood spills from multiple wounds on her body.

@Francisco: Your directions should be enough.

With Laura already running into the fray, the creatures not attacking Randa focus on you as Lendra bends her knees a little as her blade ignites in golden flame.

Charging towards the unseen, Lendra strikes one of the creatures flanking Randa with tremendous force. A style of battle that has become a staple amongst paladins.

The blade connects blindly. The creature is hurt. And hurt a lot. However...

The pain visited upon it by Lendra is more by virtue of her faith and devition. Not the blade itself.

@Laura: You already went through a situation like this.

Several days ago, with Remiel. Torn apart by hideous beasts as you ran away and left him to his grisly fate. But not today. The others mentioned unseen creatures in these sewers and now little Randa seems to have been caught in their grip. Only one thing you can do as no response comes from the bridge's edge- specifically Davish.

There is a reason why you are considered one of the strongest back in the church of Kord. Even mighty Bhagazzin has been said to have second thoughts when it comes to engaging you in the colosseum.

And as your body stampedes towards the short half orc, it becomes clear why.

Who knows how many are attacking the little local, but it matters not as you become a freight train and collide against Randa causing her orc eyes to widen as she is expelled from the bridge, splashing into the dark waters below.

@Randa: Who knows what hurts more.

Getting puked in the face by acid and have your limbs torn nearly off their sockets, or... getting elbowed by Laura in the gut as the grip from your unseen attackers lets go and you find yourself falling backwards into the cold disgusting waters of the cistern with a loud splash.

You read that woman's diary. She had to swim in this river of waste to get away from those things. But it didn't pan out too good for her in the end.

    @Francisco:
    There goes Randa.

The distance between the bridge and the cistern isn't too high- she should be alive, but out of your reach. The half orc may be able to swim away from this alive.

The two insects on the railing turn their blank eyes at you and spread wings and claws as they speed towards you with fiendish ferocity, attempting to hold you down and injure you gravely in the process, opening their mandibles and allowing you to smell the vitriolic breath from within as it burns your face by smell alone.

@Francisco: This horrid things are incredibly fast!

Despite your tough armor, their claws manage to rip through the metal and hold you tight as Laura gets swarmed several feet away from you and Randa is barreled towards the fetid waters below.

Thankfully, you did ask The Almighty for a sliver of his strength. The same he is said to have used so long ago to drive evil into the recesses of the Earth.

It's a shiny metallic elbow as you dig it into one of the creature's face, allowing you to get a respite and swing your mace with ease. Of note, it hurt you more than it hurt this bug as you broke free from its grasp.

And when the mace comes down and you take several steps back, you watch in disbelieve as your mace bears the smallest of cracks and look at the chitinous devil:

Not a single scratch. No blunt trauma or nothing. You didn't even hurt it!

Lendra on her end, blindly swings her blade at those attacking Laura, but without the means to see these things, her blade strikes thin air as you watch your team divided...and very much in danger.

@Laura: You are not going to die down here!

Many may confuse you as an illiterate brute. They would be right... if only partially. The latent rage in your body allows to see your attackers: horrific insects that have lived down here for who knows how long. Ferocious indeed, but not as ferocious as you. Clarity is waiting somewhere down here and by all Hell if you're going to be stopped by these things!

Given your immense strength, granted by Kord himself, you wrest your way out of their chitinous grasp and swing your axe, made of the hardest alloy there is, gravely injuring two of the creatures, but...

Strong as adamantine is, something about these creatures. Their shell is incredibly tough. You still manage to cause spurts of purple blood to fly all over and the shrieks from these bugs echo throughout the tunnels...

it was for something like this that Davish had impressed upon this new troupe but a few hours of patience. Why could they not tamp down their impatience to be off and allow the priest time to prepare for this inevitability. They were in a gobblasted sewer, and the thought of a slight stink in their nostrils was enough to cast caution to the wind and plunge headfirst into this mess. Fools, the lot of them, and a greater fool he for becoming entwined with them. Now there was naught to do but dance to his fool's tune and hope to survive.

With a shout both fury and exasperation, Davish charges into battle, having only just heard from the priest the location of a few of the attackers, but seeing Laura set upon by either the same foes, or new, it makes no matter. Hoping his bulk doesn't cause the bridge to collapse, he lets Nirvana flash into the fight, striking next to Laura in hopes of catching one of these foes full on.

@Davish: There is a reason why you are a seasoned Man of the Law.

To trap your quarry, you need to be prepared. The Church of Pelor is recognized as one of the most respected and influential in the City of Power. This Father Francisco they sent... he can't be just a mere monk in fancy robes and clunky armor. The man even mentioned being prepared, but in the end, under a democratic rule, they all agreed to press on and now the half orc has taken a plunge.

Perhaps the notion of democracy is overrated.

But that will be a discussion for after you deal with these things. Wherever they are. True to what Randa mentioned, they are unseen, but that hasn't stopped either Francisco or Laura to be able to target them as you make your way into the bridge and keen your eyes at the battling barbarian, hoisting Nirvana in one hand and lining your shot- miss and who knows... you might cut Laura in half.

The blade flies past the beaming Pelorian and Lendra, who sidesteps at the last second before your sacred blade swings back to your hand, caught expertly and missing Laura by a few inches.

Not a drop of blood on it. Annoying creatures, indeed.

@Laura: If only Davish could see them as you do...

That blade of his could've brought one of them down easily. But that isn't the case and now, surrounded, these things are vicious as they attempt to claw you to death, with two gaining a flanking advantage over you.

@Francisco: You may have moved slightly away from these creatures, but not entirely.

And to make matters worse, your mace isn't hurting them at all. This, the creatures seem to know all too well as they get into flanking positions and engage you with everything they got.

@ Francisco: So these things will not yield to man made steel...

Looking at both chitinous creatures, you swing your mace in the air and cause your light radius to increase if only for the blink of a second, seemingly blinding the beasts before a golden crackling mace floats by your side, said to have been wielded by Pelor himself so long ago.

There has yet to be a record anywhere detailing how a mortal stood against a god.

And given how the creature is heavily hurt by the mace, chances are there never will be.

Randa is not happy, to say the least...

At least she's free now, toppling into the awfulness that not even the bugs will venture after her in. She's fallen in sewers before, and even had to hide in materals somehow worse than this back in the woods. ...And then there was that time she hide under some freshly killed corpses, but now's not the time to recollect...

@Randa: Chances are you have already swallowed some of this disgusting water...

If, hopefully, it is only water. Half orcs aren't given much credit for their resilience, like dwarves are. But whatever diseases this cistern may carry, your body has been able to mitigate. For now.

To climb back onto the bridge would be most unwise in your current state. You can see and hear the group battling above. They better finish these things before you reach dry land. For now, though, that woman's diary will have to be put to the test as you hold your breath for long enough to not swallow more polluted water and intone a prayer to Obad Hai, causing your neck to sprout gills and you duck beneath the water's surface and exhale.

It works. You should be able to avoid those unseen bugs as long as you remain underwater. As for the cistern itself, you never got to see how far it stretched from the bridge. Can't see it now either. But you can see your immediate environs. It isn't that deep- a thirty foot swim should get you to the bottom. Your natural sight as an orc allow you to see that the entire bottom of the cistern is riddled with bones. Hard to tell of what kind, but they must've been down here pickling up for quite awhile.

And then you see something... no. Someone.

It's a hooded figure. Its robes flowing amidst the polluted waters as it stops and aims its gaze up at you. Impossible to see a face given how dark this place is, but the figure simply watches you for a few seconds, crosses its arms... and is gone.

@Laura: These things think they can best you?

That being said, they can take an axe to the face and not die. You need to finish them quickly if you have any chance to get out of this place with the others.

And then Lendra swings her blade and tries to make out something. Anything, really. She must lack the ability you have to see the unseen. Different training, but luck seems to be on her side as her blade strikes one of the creatures twice. Their skin is so tough that the warrior of Trithereon nearly leaves her sword lodged onto the bug's skin before wedging it out with a grunt, trailing more of that disgusting purple blood as the bug she hit, mildly inconvenienced, turns its attention on her.

But such a gift is about to expire. And these things are not limited to a few seconds a day. One of them leaps upon Lendra and digs its claws on the warrior of Trithereon as it latches on her chest and vomits a copious amount of acid on her face, causing the holy warrior to bend her knees for a few seconds before resuming wrestling with the fiend.

@Francisco: Who knows how many fell down here to these things...

But neither you nor any who walk by the side of The Almighty, who now seems to have taken you as his chosen vessel, will suffer the same fate as you raise your hand towards the dark heavens of these foul pits and intone the words of power as the Radiance of God washes over your body, cleansing away most of the corrosive damage and the claw marks from your armor and tunic.

This does not go unnoticed by the creatures, despite their blank soul eyes as their mandibles froth more acidic saliva and they screech at your face before you command Pelor's own mace to smite one of them thrice as it nearly cracks the creature's mandibles away, leaving it throughly pummeled, but not dead yet.

It's a grunt from Lendra further down the bridge as she wrestles and head butts the creature grappling with her, giving the woman a brief respite to escape its grasp and enough momentum to swing her blade...and miss.

Unless you can end these things now, who knows what will happen.

@Laura & Davish: Blind or not... they need to be put down now!

Their skin is incredibly tough, but between the Axe's unmitigated fury and Nirvana's zealous resolve, three of the hideous creatures are struck with such force that they become visible and collapse on the ground at Laura's feet, squirting purple blood from the deep wounds and shrieking towards the dark ceiling as their limbs try and claw at the barbarian one last time before curling in on themselves, very much dead.

    @Francisco: They managed.

Alone, you may have taken awhile to bring these things down, but when these two step up to their game... perhaps there is a way to uncover what is happening down here. As for the ones with you...

The creatures seem to sense the death of their kin and exchange blank stares before shrieking at your face and spreading their wings wide and taking off, away from the bridge in opposite directions.

They plan to get away. Perhaps you may remind at least one of them how unwise it is to go against the Radiance that is Pelor.

    Spoiler: AoO

And whether you take down one of them, the other flies over thirty feet away and while airborne, you watch it shriek at all of you as loud as it can, envelop itself in a purple aura...and vanish completely.

That wasn't an invisibility effect- you would have been able to see it.

    That thing teleported.
