    Spider Shepherd and Spiders

    The spiders, at home in the terrain take to the trees for advantage, quickly scaling them and launching themselves off them at the heroes. Spiders. Spiders falling in the dark.

    The first, assaults the frantic Elakas... but the Elf's caution pays off, the spider's fangs miss him by a wide margin thanks to a quick thinking counterstep.

    The second, springs at the armored Cassius... who misses deflecting it with his parry, but the spider once again bounces off the thick steel plates of his armor...

    The third and fourth ones converge on Bran from in front and behind... Bran manages to avoid one, but nearly steps back into reach for the second. Only a little luck, or call it intution keeps his flesh away from the nasty bite...

    The Spider Shepherd, the Ettercap, seems to summon a never-ending thread of silk that swirls around Pip, attempting to ensnare him... but the Gnome is agile and keeps away from the devilish web...

    Not to be stopped by the ineffectivness of its web, the Ettercap lashes out with wicked claws... narrowly avoiding leaving their marks.

    Point blank range... the exploding ball of fire decimated one of the creepy crawlies and left the other on the verge of death...

    Elakas, poised and steady just managed to catch the vermin handidly on he point of his dagger, ending the vile creature with an audible snap as the point pierced the carapace... Moving carefully into a flank with Pip, just as quickly as his blade lashes out, the Ettercap was gone, skittering away...

    Cassius, stepping clear to make way for his blade, he sends the critter skittering away...

    Filled with relief and gratitude at the sudden presence of his friends, Pip discovers he can breathe out again. Just as well it’s not the other way around because the air is heavy with the stench of burnt spider and, well, the monstrous mound that seems to be leading them. In truth, Pip probably can’t smell the creature – perhaps he’s being unkind – but he can certainly see it: scooting just as fast as its skittering friends. Elakas is seeking to put a stop to that, Cassius too. And then, Pip, to his horror, sees one of those same little spiders, with an almost lupine leap, chomping the back of the knight’s armor.

    Can the flankers be flanked? Pip seeks to answer that in his own party’s favor.

    NOTE2: If any of Pip’s attacks kill the spider, then he’ll immediately attack the ettercap. Is it OK to use his existing rolls for that? (i.e. if, miraculously Pip kills the spider in his first action, then can the rolls for actions 2 & 3 be applied to the ettercap?)

    Pip is fortunate, the spider that landed on his back and went to set its fangs into his neck, it found his leathers instead. The fangs punched through, but the stiff leather was enough to prevent the worst of the damage. Pip feels a burning as the venom spreads through his system, Pip feels weak, but shakes off the worst of the poison...

    Elakas slashes at the Ettercap, somehow skittering a dozen feet away before he can attack again. Following, Elakas' blade fails to find its mark.

    Cassius, seeing Elakas and the Ettercap move outside the light of the torch, he darts off into the black, banishing it with his torch. Turning his back to the spider... prove to be of little concern as the spider misses him completely...

    Takes to actions for Cassius to get into that flank or any attack at all with the skitter. Hit for 4HP.

    Pip only takes 3WP, he is Fatigued for a short while from the Wolf Spider venom, but he was already Fatigued from being so tired, so not worse off.

    Pip’s grandmother used to tell him stories about sniffing trolls that would make his hair stand and flesh crawl. Apparently such fearsome foes have a special fondness for children who steal cookies.

    She’d never said anything about spiders. Perhaps they would have been a better warning, because through real experience now his skin could write an entire tome on itching!

    An arachnid's fangs are gnawing the armor at his neck. Outrage and shock are shouting in his ears on how to shake it free; and neither notice - not even he - the second spider leaping for a try. Until it does.

    Perhaps the sailor thinks there’s more than one way to skin a gnome. Pip’s more interested in how to kill two cautionary tales made true.

    The creature appears to be getting somewhat desperate. Elakas is ably avoiding its attacks, even if he seems to be having difficulty landing any of his own. With Bran and Pip cleaning up the spiders, Cassius continues focusing his attention on the larger creature, moving up to surround it with Elakas.

If it goes far enough away I'll spend two actions on getting close and make one attack.

    Bran summons another bolt of lightning, the electricity liquefying and evaporating the spiders insides until it's carapace cracks like a kernel of corn over the fire. Most disconcerting since the spider was at present on Pip.

    Relieved at the sudden absence of biting spiders, and keen to shake free the smoldering carapace on his shoulder, Pip leaps into action. Must have been Bran who sizzled the final threat – Pip’s whispering thanks to the boy while hastening towards a gap in the trees ahead.

    The final of the spiders may be up in smoke, but the thing that likely drew the lot of them is still weaving woe around Cassius and Elakas. Leaping through the spotted space between tall trunks, Pip lands at the creature’s rear.     As Pip steps into the fray, dagger slashing, the Ettercap... the Ettercap slings more web at Cassius, the source of light, before quickly stepping out of the deathtrap... the Ettercap finds itselt half climbing the tree...

    I am not sure if the ettercap being in the tree will grant any cover, and if so, if that will stack or overlap with the cover that could be granted by the brush Bran is standing in. Therefore, IF it reduces the advantage/cover the ettercap receives, Bran will step to O23 and you can ignore the 3rd spell

    1st fire blast (1 PP) (1d4+2)[5] DEX 16 negates

    2nd IF DEX save failed, fire blast again (1 PP) (1d4+2)[5]
    IF DEX save success, lightning blast (5pp) (1d6+2)[8]

    As the boy summons fire and lightning, the Ettercap uses the tree its climbing for cover... the first bolt of fire flies over its shoulder, two following blasts of lightning sunder portions of the tree.

    Since it's ranged attacks that are targeting it first it'll react and take cover instead of reacting and skittering from a melee attack. Take Cover Tree Save = 50%. Bran won't be able to move far enough after the first attack to negate the following cover.

    Too bad, he really wanted to skitter up the tree out of melee range, lol.
