Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
The Missing Messenger-South of Baldur's Gate
The rest of the day was spent in a blurr. The group gathered their things, made sure to have their basic provisions, and gathered horsed from a reputable stable, courtesy of the church's coin of course.
Saddled and ready, the group of unlikely adventurers set forth. The Coast Way was an oft traveled road patrolled for dozens of miles by the Gate's finest, but it was a long stretch of road nonetheless. With little danger on the road outside of the occasional daring bandit between the Gate and near edge of the Cloakwood, the group sets out at a steady pace.
A Dangerous Road
A few hours south of town, as the sun was beginning to drift towards the horizon and the road gets more worn and windy and flanked by scraggly trees and shrubs, a trio of men can be seen standing in the center of the road. The middle most man, a wiry and dangerous looking man is standing just ahead of the other two wearing a dangerous smirk. The pair flanking him are holding crossbows. The trio are all wearing armors and have other visible weapons about their persons...

Bran Aelfstone
Bran spends the ride looking around and asking idle questions about...everything. It doesn't really stand out when he points to the men ahead and asks, "Why are they in the road? It isn't same to stand in the road. Could get run over. Or spook mounts. Or people might think you are a bandit."
His own mention of bandits stops his stream-of-consciousness prattle. He looks at the men again. Those nearest him might think they detect a hint of heat and light from his direction. Probably just the sun though.

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Felpip Nindlenorn
Words of wisdom from the young. Pip is thinking about that as he looks away from Bran and back to the smirking man in the path ahead. People might think you’re a bandit.
Pip is at the rear of the small convoy of his friends. He tries to use that position to his advantage, to conceal his hands reaching for his crossbow and sliding in a bolt. Of course, the men flanking the one ahead have already done the same. They could easily shoot first.
But what’s quicker than a tongue? Yes! Pip raises his voice.
“Ah, greetings friends! You must be the reception envoys from Candlekeep. A company of 200 of Baldurs’ Gate’s finest warriors gallops hard behind us and is moments away. Can you hear their hoofs? A great campaign is at hand – no bandit who values their head will be within one hundred leagues by the morrow. Hurry back to the Keep and announce our arrival!”
Spoiler: Grasping at strawsDeception(Bluff) check (1d20+9)[27] – hoping that the (presumable) bandits will get spooked and ride off, clearing the way for the party to proceed down the road unharmed.

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Men in the Center of the Road
As Pip delivers his line, the two men flanking the obvious leader begin looking around and shifting nervously. The tension builds and the center man lets out a throaty laugh, "Not bad, not bad at all. If I didn't know you all better, I'd have believed you. Gah, two hundred heavy horse is a bit of a tall tale, no? We'd hear them and see the dust and would have seen them mustering before we left." The man smiles at the group, "I'll give you one thing, tieing your lie to a grain of truth. Indeed you are headed to candlekeep, and riding on the church's coin no less, but there is no envoy and none of the Gate's finest at your heels."
Seeing the obvious confusion on your faces, "What? Don't recognize me when Im' not in my skivvies? Or is it to bright out? Maybe its just the idea of a fair fight you don't like, rather prowl along rooftops eh?" The man's smile curls into a smirk at the word 'fair'.
Pip's bluff might not have run them off, but it did have an affect. One of the men's eyes dart towards a tree off to the groups right, the indication just enough for the whole group, even with Pip's dialog and Bran's heated focus, to notice a fourth man perched in the tree, crossbow at the ready, his head turned off towards the north, to the gate, looking for a dustcloud or listening for the sound of hooves.
Spoiler
Fourth man is hiding in the tree off to the group's right. He has a crossbow and is perched in ambush.

Elakas Morkasion
Elakas thinks back. Who could possibly have a grudge against them? All they've done is help! Saved the burning inn, taken a quest from the chruch, saved the girl from...
Oh. So that's who this man must be. The kidnapper who ran away into the night. Prowling on rooftops, yes. Surely a man that should be brought to justice, but also someone who seems to know more than he lets on. Perhaps Elakas can gain some information before the inevitable fighting begins.
Ah, so it's you. Well met! You'll be happy to know your earlier cargo has been delivered safely to the temple of Tymora. But pray, who could possibly want to take possession of a prophet when she's delivering such a vital prophesy? It sounds like, if we don't all work together to stop it, the gods themselves could be in danger! Won't you help us in saving them?
Spoiler: ELAKAS HAS NO TACT!
Bluff, Deception, Persuasion? All are completely untrained and at +1, because I will NOT play another silver-tongued character who can talk their way out of trouble! But I'm still gonna attempt it, because how cool would it be if the bandit would help us save the world instead of try to kill us? Anyway, here goes nothing. (1d20+1)[20]

"You may not see clouds of dust," says Pip, thinking as bold as brass, while rising as high as a gnome can ride in a saddle. He thrusts his arm to the right, pointing at the figure hiding in the foliage. "But the sand of your subterfuge does not sting our eyes either!"
What, what?
He shakes a finger, a stubby stretching, not as clearly nor as far as he'd imagined. "Everyone here -- all of us -- can see you hiding there in the tree!"
Pip dearly hopes that everyone, indeed, is looking at where he's pointing, and not at his other hand, readying his crossbow for use.
SpoilerBluff check to distract the bandits while Pip draws his crossbow. (1d20+9)[20]
I think he'll need two hands to properly wield it, so maybe this is a waste of time... (Also, if Thievery(slight of hand) is more appropriate for this situation, then Pip's modifier should be +2 instead of +8]Last edited by Estre; 2020-07-14 at 02:49 PM.

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Felpip Nindlenorn
Relieved that his distraction gambit has worked, Pip levels his crossbow at the bandit in the tree -- only to see a fireball explode there.
More infernal hounds! Ah, no, it's Bran.
Double relieved, Pip presses slipping knees against his horse's mane, hoping to steady himself now that his hands are nowhere near the comfort of the reins. Instead, he feels the wood grain of his crossbow between his fingers as he takes aim, and the metal trigger too.
Spoiler: Pip round 11.0 - Aims at BR1 (at F15)
2.0 - Fires bolt at BR1 (1d20+4)[7] Adv for aim cancels DAdv for balancing on horse, I think. Damage (1d6+1)[5]
3.0 - Reloads crossbow
The above is assuming that Pip had a chance to load his crossbow in the lead-up to the fight (I mentioned his attempt to do this when the party was still chatting with the bandits, but didn't roll anything I think. If loading is necessary, I'll put that as action 1.0 and then reload next round.)

Bandit Recruit
The young man hiding in the tree had already faces a bolt of flame and a crossbow bolt but wasn't any worse for the wear. Taking a quick shot at the boy, the source of the flame... but his bolt is just as poorly placed as Pip's was. So far, lots of flying flame and crossbow bolts but little harm done.
With the bolt gone the man furiously reloads the crossbow and gets his back to the tree, maximizing its protection...

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Cassius Mortain
Cassius has little patience for this particular group of bandits. Seems their defeat last time had not taught them the error of their ways; they'd need reminding of why banditry was a bad idea, it seemed. As Bran's firebolt and the bandit's shot streak by, Cassius calmly readies his lance and shield, and spurs Firebrand forward, leveling the point directly at the leader's chest.
Spoiler: OOCActions:
0.5: Draw lance
1.0: Equip shield (I assume he doesn't just ride around with it in his hand)
3.0: Charge BL!
Move to N20/N21
Attack: (1d20+4)[8]
Damage (adv): (1d12+3)[15] (1d12+3)[4]
If Cassius is attacked on their turn he will shield block (I don't think he can shield block if he misses and gets an AoO, since he's used all of his actions for the turn). If equipping a shield is more than a half action, he'll forego that (and obviously the shield block as well)... hope the armor holds, if that's the case!
I'm letting the hidden bandit get behind me, but hopefully Cassius can hold these off while you all deal with that one and then come up to assist. Also, I didn't see it specified anywhere - what are W1/W2 down by the wagon?I'm playing Ironsworn, an RPG that you can run solo - and I'm putting the campaign up on GitP!

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Felpip Nindlenorn
While Cassius’ charge is throwing clods of dirt into the sky, and Bran and Elakas are maneuvering to slide from their mounts, Pip squints at the tree where he buried his bolt. Their foe is hiding behind it now. And, oddly, someone is whistling.
No, not someone, something. The enemy is firing back!
It nearly blunts the sound of Cassius’ lance crashing into a villainous hide. Nearly. Pip smiles a smile of satisfaction, which almost as immediately, turns into a grimace of dismay.
They’ve hit Beatrice, Elakas’ noble mare! That’s why he’s dismounted so quickly. Mercifully, a bolt from a different direction can’t find the good elf, who has artfully sheltered within a shrub.
Satisfaction returns as a laugh of triumph from Pip. And he’s still grinning while a nagging thought is insisting he shouldn’t be: Where didthat last bolt come from?
Because whistling is in the air again. Of course, there’s another bandit, hidden in another tree. And he’s just released his crossbow. Pip is no longer smiling when it hits.
So now dismay has returned too? No, actually annoyance. Certainly at that man for shooing him. But also at his own hubris. So, Pip resists the urge to charge at the new foe and instead urges his horse in a different direction. A practical one.
In the distance Cassius stands before a group of enemies. Perhaps a flank attack against their chief will bring a bit of humility to them too.
Spoiler: Pip Round 20.5 Step to M3/4
1.0 Draw dagger (swapping out crossbow -- this is only 1/2 action, right?)
2/3.0 Move twice, 90' to M22

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Cassius Mortain
Abandoning his lance, Cassius draws his broadsword and unslings his shield, readying both. The young knight deftly maneuvers Firebrand forwards, moving around to the opposite side from where Pip has ridden up, and swings his blade down in a ferocious arc towards the bandit leader. The freshly-forged blade flashes in the sunlight - he'd hoped it would first taste battle against a more... demonic sort of foe than a common brigand, but it seems this is where it must be called upon for the first time.
Spoiler: Actions1.0: Draw shield
1.5: Draw sword
2.0: Step to P22/P21 (I assume you can step when mounted - if not ignore this action)
3.0: Attack! (1d20+4)[11]

Hopefully that puts Pip in a bit of an easier flanking situation! Cassius will use a shield block if attacked.
EDIT: somehow doubt an 11 hits... but if it doesn't, at least it was a minimum damage roll.Last edited by rs2excelsior; 2020-07-20 at 06:23 PM.

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Seeing the unstable ball of flame Bran hurled at him, the bandit had but few precious moments to decide what to do. He had taken cover behind the tree, but that would offer him little protection from an exploding ball of fire. Having little choice, the young man leaps from the tree... the attempt does little for him, he's badly burned and half of his face is blistered, but despite his injuries he managed to avoid further injury from his fall...

Cover Save 30% (1d100)[78] He had taken cover and gotten to Medium(50%) Cover, but would have had no cover to a fire bomb exploding behind him to he's diving to get the tree between him and the fire. Might get hurt in the dive anyway. Fail

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Elakas Morkasion
A whirlwind of activity and fighting is all about, and Elakas is still far behind his friends. Still, he knows to shoot what you can, and decides to focus on the "ambush" bandits in the trees. Culling the weak and those separated from the pack is the primary strategy in hunting, and it should hold firm in group fights as well. This principle in mind, Elakas moves to get a better shot on his prey.
Spoiler: Actions
1) Move to H13 (avoid the rough terrain to get there in 30')
2) Shoot at BR1 at (1d20+4)[10] for (1d8+1)[7](1d8+1)[4]
2.5) Reload
3) Feel smug about the great hit I one hundred percent got, while considering BR1's life choices.

Re: BSF: Red Sun Rising(IC)
Elakas wastes no time advancing and executing the badly burned, wounded, and prone young man in front of him. The arrow passes cleanly through to stick in the ground, the fletching still visible above the young man's back.
Spoiler
BR1 is Prone, which makes him exposed. So Elakas will have advantage on that attack.
