    Default Mind Flayer Internet

So, my DM has made a very terrifying thing: A Mind Flayer internet. Here's what's happens...

    Mindwitness in a glass dome

Glass dome lets them see all creatures with 4+ Int within telepathy range

Chain them together in a massive network

Now a Mind Flayer or Elder Brain could send messages instantaneously beyond their telepathy range.

But even better, he showed a flaw-

Telepathic Creatures (He chose Meenlocks) could abuse this as well for psychic torment or communication

He had a whole quest where the Mind Flayers saw a massive amount of Meenlocks showing up and tormenting the Mind Flayer's minions. The 'Flayers paid us to kill the Meenlocks.

Solid thinking, and definitely something that Illithids would do. Couple of issues though:
    1. Mindwitnesses are not exactly easy to come by, and take a lot of resources to create.
    2. Elder Brains may not necessarily get along with one another, causing all kinds of psychic backlash and interference near the contested hub.
    3. Telepathy range is fairly short, but tends to cover the main illithid hive. Defending an outpost outside the main hive would prove problematic, given Underdark dwellers.
    4. Putting such a high value target outside of anywhere that is heavily defended would be a bad idea.

I honestly agree, but this was my DMs idea, not mine. But when he did use it, it was terrifying.

Hehehehe, tell your DM that he can make a fairly simple phone and computer system with Magic Mouth. You no longer need a high value creature and spell, instead just group of magic mouths set to go off with specific activation words from themselves.

Hmm, long-range communication between colonies could be achieved through the trading of ulitharids.

"The ulitharid can maintain its psychic link with the elder brain regardless of the distance between them, so long as they are both on the same plane of existence." (VGtM p175)

Yes, but Ulitharids eventually become Elder Brains themselves.
