    Lost Mine of Phandelver

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

The journey has been uneventful so far, Theo can't complain about his companions, they seems pretty reliable.

At the moment Theo is walking at the right side of the wagon, due to the latent danger of bandits or similar has lead the young Fighter go around with his armor on and weapon at hand, from time to time he feels the compulsion of asking Austine one question or another regarding magical theories and Spells formulas but that would be rather awkward, at least awkward to him who isn't too used to make small talk for no reason.

    Austine Wyvernspur, Wizard

When Austine was a child their stable master personally prepared the carriage for a day's ride into town. Her youthful tongue could never get his name right. Dodders she called him, sometimes Deodors, in the casually cruel way that children can be. That was beside the point. What mattered was how effortlessly the old man could guide their horses during the journey.

Years later and here she was, straps held too tight, back aching from the road, and patience worn trying to keep the wagon on the road instead of in the brush. What names would Dodders, gods rest his soul, have for her in this moment? Nothing kind, she was certain. She was mulling that over when she caught Theo glance her way again.

There was something he wanted to say, clearly, but he wouldn't get on with it. As said, her patience was already thin and the fighter's failed attempts at conversation wasn't improving its condition. So, when he looked her way again she was staring right back, silver eyes boring straight into his.

"Yes Theo? Can I help you?"

Kiv would'v easily volunteered as a scout if it weren't for the dreadful burning sun outside. Even on overcast days he complained about it a lot. But usually the little kobold kept quiet, trying to pull as little attention onto his person as possible. Dwarves did not outright hate kobolds, but Kiv felt like Gundar or Gundren was not a fan. Kiv would have offered to take less gold than the others, used to a life in the gutters, scavenging and surviving on his own, he was just happy to call a "clan" his own. But the group chimed in, demanding Gundren offered the full pay for Kiv too. Possibly to rob poor Kiv at the end?

Ever since he was kicked out of the Goldsnout clan, the beige-yellow canine reptile was a nervous wreck. Not trying to hide from, but keeping out of Gundren's sight, he usually rode on the one place one would check last, the roof of the cabin. There, the miserable creature had the least physical comfort, but his soul could rest easily as he could see further, not only somewhat balancing out his light blindness, but also helping him notice trouble earlier. He knew his place in this new clan was the same as his old. He was a look-out, a scout and a trapper.

He glances forward, to yip down towards Austine: [Draconic] I do not do horses but I could learn. But I think my place up here is better for all of us. Anxious he would leave anyone out of the conversation, he turns from his well-spoken Draconic into broken common. Austine improved his grammar a lot, but it was still, well, a kobold. Austine want break, but Kiv need to look-out. We swap now, okies? he says, unsure if Gundren allowed it.

Alaric walked beside the much taller Oskmey, intrigued by, both, the firbolg's nature, and her faith. The lithe young man was of average height, standing perhaps a hand under six foot tall, narrow shoulders and willowy limbs, he could not weigh more than 150 pounds, if that. However, he moved with a confidence and vigor that belied his youth and nature. Wearing the sombre tones of a Kelemvite, dark, rough spun cotton, a high, starched neck, clasped with the scales of the Lord of the Dead. A rich, brocade coat, that hung passed his waist, belted with a broad leather belt, pouches slung from it containing incense, vials, and other religious adornments. On his right hip, was a text, hung from the belt with silver chain, along it's cover an embossed skull, silver filagree scales balancing atop the crown of it's head. He carried a staff, leaned on it as he walked, black wood, sturdy, a knot carved to resemble a skull atop it, and across his narrow chest a brace of steel throwing darts, each engraved with a skull and scales.

Looking up at the broad shouldered woman, his hood pulled up to shield his eyes from the sun's bright light, "Oskmey, we have travelled some days together, and I have witnessed your perform miracles of divine faith, a vessel able to channel the strength of a higher power through your actions and deeds." He paused, considering how to proceed without offending the mysterious woman, "With no wish to offend, I do find myself curious about the tenets of your faith, for it is ... unknown to me, and I have spent considerable time in my own studies which included cursory knowledge of Faerun's major faiths and religions."

    [Draconic]"Kiv, you're a jewel."

She pulled back on the reigns and brought the wagon to a stop. She stood and stretched while he clambered down noting, much to her chagrin, that her legs had started to go numb. She passed the horses to him as Theo hit the vocal equivalent of a stone on the road. Despite the pins and needles she carefully made her way down to ground level, tossing her staff to a conjured hand to keep her own free.
"Theo, we've been over this. I don't get to use that title anymore and you don't get to act like there's nothing rattling around in your head. Now, are you a beggar tugging on the coattails of the Weave or are you a wizard who commands it? Because I would love to discuss concerns before they become problems with another wizard."

As the group moves down the road they pause momentarily to give Austine a reprieve from the drivers seat. Kiv and Theo climb up to fill the 2 seats on the wagon.

During the stop Oskmey notices some Arrox root growing along side the road. His own knowledge of plants indicates that it can be used as an effective healing salve for someone that has the tools to process it.

As the wagons and conversations continue Theo spots something on the road in the distance blocking the party. It looks like 2 large animals lying on the road.

The towering firbolg is clad in chainmaille that jingles softly as she walks. Her Gyðja vestments are packed away so they will not get soiled while on the road.

"One should never have to apologize for wanting to seek knowledge. It is a noble endeavor. When the sky is clear and the sun is high we shall honor the great Phenix and ask that it’s light brings understanding of things unknown."

She spends a few moments contemplating where to start.

"While some deities might provide a strict code of conduct, the great spirits are usually mysterious and elusive. When they do have a message for us it is never given in words, visions and omens are common though the elders tell of times when the spirits were more active."

She pauses to harvest the Arrox root and gives thanks to Arasdoronen for the bounty of the forest.

"It is said that the Kraken once pulled an island into the sea when the inhabitants declared themselves to be mightier than the great spirits and challenged them to a fight."

Upon spotting the obstruction on the road ahead Oskmey looks around for a decent sized stone or stick to throw near the animals to see if they react.

    Gloria

Off to the side, a Goblin woman named Gloria walks alongside the caravan, dressed in drab but clearly well made and tailored traveling clothes. On a normal day, Gloria would have been eagerly chatting with her fellow travelers, but today her head was down, and she was clearly fiddling with some sort of metal gadget. Every so often, she'd utter a mild swear as sparks flew from the device. It was only thanks to dumb luck she hadn't accidentally started any fires and had only stumbled due to not watching where she was going a few times.

This time her luck ran out, she walked head first into the slowing wagon and dropped the thing she was working on. It promptly fell into a puddle.

"What-What the-" She sputtered. "What's going on up there?"

Now only about 50 ft from the beasts you can clearly make out 2 dead horses with black feathered arrows littered across their bodies. The woods press close to the path here with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Alaric nodded as the larger woman spoke of spirits, and dogma, he slowly considered her words. "It is true, having been raised within a monastery devoted to the Lord of the Dead, my view may be more narrow, than I," he paused. "Or even He, would prefer. If I am to guide other's to their just ends, then, I too, must come to respect their beliefs. Even if those beliefs contradict my own." As he began to remunerate on the nature of life, and it's inevitable end, Oskmey's actions drew his attention to the wreckage that blocked their path.

Quickly noting the cause of death, he determined the direction from which the archer would likely have been concealed. Austine's compliment flustered Kiv deeply. His scales unable to blush, instead his tiny tail twitched nervously. [Draconic] You earned the rest. My eyes are worthless in the daytime anyhow. he says, quickly settling into the slog of guiding a slow carriage. The horses were not tired, the road was great, so there was little to pay attention to. He tried to listen in on Alaric's discussion with Gloria, but quickly abandoned the idea for lack of knowledge of any surface deities. He barely knew Kurtulmak, the thief of draconic magic, and only basic rites of Gaknulak, the Trapmaster. His world was in the here and now.

Noting a very bad horrible ambush ahead, Kiv tries to stop the cart, but struggles to get the horses to calm down a bit. Eventually the horses stop, as he drops the reins. Picking up his bow and arrow as the small kobold looks around in panic trying to hide. Eventually he realizes his fault, as not even an ambush would help his bad aim in sunlight. He needed to stay in the shadows, so he tries to drop under the carriage, and looks for the shadow himself.

While Theo climbed back up in her stead, Austine took her staff back and let the hand dissipate into the nothingness from whence it came.

"We really do need to amend that Kiv. Perhaps Gloria..." She looked back to see their resident problem solver deep in contemplation of another device, "Well, perhaps later"
As they continued Austine busied herself by staring off into the distance of the road. The dead animals in the road barely registered to her bored mind until they were practically on top of them. Odd, but Alaric seemed to have a handle on the situation. She would've investigated as well, but Theo was ready to talk and it would've been rude to wander off.

As soon as it was possible the fighter jumped towards the remaining goblin and with a single fast motion draw his battle axe and slashes at the poor creature, it was simple but deadly even if utterly mundane.

The goblin rolls forward nimbly extinguishing the flames before they can harm him then he's met with another burst of fire as Gloria's firebolt hits him square in the torso. He shrieks in pain and falls unconscious.

Theo dashes forward to engage the sleeping goblins. As he makes it into reach of the goblin, kiv let's an arrow fly hitting the prone figure with a fantastic shot. The goblin cries out before slumping down fully unconscious.

    Austine Wyvernspur, Wizard
The fight seemed to be over just as quickly as it started. Gathering a flame into her palm, the wizard peered around the wagon towards the ambush. It was quiet, but that could change any moment.

"Alaric, Theo, how do things look up there?"

    Spoiler: OOC

Austine will hold up a fire bolt in case another goblin pops out at them.

Oskmey glares at Kiv. "While these highwaymen might have intended us harm, there is no need to slay them once they are incapable of defending themselves."

She begins moving up to where the goblins are.
