Girard was a sorcerer, he could've conspired with Sereni, volunteered to work on making the system, and then sabotaged it. I think it's less likely but Dorukan or Lirian could've been the one in on it instead.

Not that I am claiming it's a super plausible theory, but I don't think the warning system is where it falls apart.
