Default First Time Keeper, First Time Players Welcome, Call of Cthluhu x ETU

    Greetings!

I, along with millions of others, have been laid off during the global pandemic. Consequently, my meatspace Dungeons and Dragons game is on indefinite hold, and I'm going stir-crazy around the house.

Many of you reading are in a similar conundrum, and thus, I offer a game to occupy ourselves. I'm a bit of a traditionalist, or maybe just old fashioned, so behold The Big 16 below.

The Pitch: We will be playing through East Texas University's Plot-Point Campaign "Degrees of Horror". However, instead of using the Savage Worlds ruleset this campaign was designed for, we will be using Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. I am a first time keeper interested in using my brand new rulebook, and I've been sitting on Degrees of Horror for year or two.

This game is open to people who have never heard of, or played, Call of Cthulhu, Savage Worlds, ETU, etc. This is my first crack at the system, and I'll not turn you away simply for having never heard of it. Veterans are welcome as well, but should adjust their expectations of my performance accordingly.

    Spoiler: Big 16
    Show

    1. What game system are we using?
    A) Call of Cthulhu, 7th Edition

    2. What 'type' or 'variant' of game will it be? what is the setting for the game?
    A) An alternate, modern world, a University Campus in the USA

    3. How many players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
    A) I am seeking to run a game for (3-9)+1 Players, for a total of 4-10 people. I say 3-9 because 1 slot is already taken. I do not intend to seek alternates.

    4. What is the gaming medium?
    A) this forum, if combat becomes... cumbersome, we will use roll20 as a map, but continue to resolve combat through posting here.

    5. What is the characters' starting status?
    A) you are incoming freshman at East Texas University, and consequently have no experience packages or similar. You'll be making strictly vanilla investigators.... or, rather, students.

    6. Starting Funds?
    A) Standard as per the character's credit rating

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want or do not want?
    A) N/A. As mentioned, you're all students, and Call of Cthulhu is a skill based, rather than class based system.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game?
    A) The only (Player) race is the Human Race.

    9. By what method should players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
    A) The vanilla method of Investigator Creation outlined in the Keeper Guide, rolling a series of d6 for each stat, in order. The only modification to this is to reroll all 1s until it is not a 1.

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
    A) Players should avoid deliberately making misanthropic or psychotic characters (the game will do that for you) but otherwise, Call of Cthulhu possesses no inkling of alignment or even more than vague nods to morality

    11. Mult-Classing
    A) Players may freely switch their majors in game, and will even be allowed to move skill points around to reflect this, but no more than once per academic year.

    12. Dice Rolling: Who, Where, How?
    A) Players will roll (almost) all of their own dice, not only for character creation but during the game as well. all dice rolls will be handled via orokos not the forum roller.

    13. Homebrew?
    A) Nah.

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? are you looking for anything in particular?
    A) A Standard Investigator's Background is required (you can find the necessary requirements on a charactersheet). Any additional backstory elements are at the total discretion of the player, but should follow the '10 minute background' format. (see links below)

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
    A) The game will be predominately an investigation and story-telling game, with healthy amounts of pulpy, high-lethality combat mixed in.

    16. Are your players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements?
    A) The only rulebook allowed for this campaign is the 7th Edition Keepers Guide, an optional purchase for first time players. I will be on hand to help with character creation for first timers or people who don't have access to a book.

Some other matters not included in the big 16
Posting Expectations: Players are expected to post within 24 hours of the GM during Combat, and within 60 hours outside of combat.

Dice Conventions: As mentioned above, all rolls for this game will be done through Orokos

Start Date: I would like to get my first IC post up and begin play on April 4th. Recruitment will therefore conclude sometime between April 3rd and immediately before I post on the 4th. EDIT: Play will begin on April 11th, provided we have at least 4 players.

Duration: This is a pandemic game. I look forward to running a relatively fast paced (for a pbp) game until I am unable to continue, either due to being called back to my employer, accidentally engineering a TPK, no activity from players, or some other circumstance that necessitates the game's untimely, or planned, end. I anticipate completing at least 1 semester, perhaps 1 whole academic year, of game time

Character Records: I'm not particularly hung up on how you manage your character sheet as long as I can see it whenever I need to, it doesn't hurt my eyes (avoid grids), and I can easily locate any information I require.

    helpful links:
Call of Cthulhu character sheets - use a Modern one
Seth Skorkowsky's introduction to Call of Cthulhu - Character Creation
    orokos
    "10 minute" background

Final Note to New Players: I know a lot of this sounds like I expect you to already have a book or have a clue what you're doing. I am here to answer every question I can and help walk you through character creation as much as needed. I just felt like it was ... counter productive to preemptively create a walk-through. Especially with Seth's video to punt to.

Absolutely very much interested. I've played an older version of CoC a few years ago. Just going to listen to the videos and then will have a look at character creation.

EDIT: Could you let us know what the package (Skill points, credit rating range, suggested contacts and occupational skills) is for student are please?

    Good question!

I'm willing to be pretty free-form and going to try to be pretty light-handed when it comes to skill packages. I'll look through and sign off on everybody's selections. But I do have some ideas to start with/help guide people if they need it.

Recommendation 1 - assuming the character 'does it right' where are they going to land in their future career path? i.e. think of your major, and where that might land? an English Major might use/tweak the Author, Journalist, or Librarian skill packages. A Psychology Major might have a modified Doctor of Medicine, Parapsychologist, Police Detective, Private Eye, Professor, etc. These can all obviously be tweaked to fit your image of what the undergraduate student form of these careers look like.
Occupational Skills: use the method provided in the occupation you decide to base your student on (i.e. the English major determined to become the next Tom Clancy would use Author and EDUx4 to generate Occupational skills.)

Recommendation 2 - what classic student archetype best describes you? are you a jock on the football or basketball teams? are you a Greek society party hound? a cheer leader? working for the school paper? a basement dwelling nerd (pot, meet kettle) who knows a lot about weird esoteric things? a budding PETA advocate or political activist?
Occupational Skills: use the two most relevant attributes (i.e. a Cheer leader might use Appearance and Dexterity or Strength. a political activist might use EDUx4 or EDUx2 and INTx2)

Recommendation 3 - I think a sort of 'generic student' package would look like this:
Student, Generic - 1 "Academic" Skill (i.e. Biology, Psychology, Physics, Mathematics, etc.) 1 Interpersonal Skill, 1 'art/craft Specialism' 1 'language, other' specialism', Library use, and 3 other areas of personal or academic interest and specialty
    Occupational Skills: EDUx4

.... I think, when in doubt, as a student, players should be using either edux4, or intx2+edux2

Suggested Credit Rating: I think anything between 9 and 89 would be appropriate for a student at university: You could be an athlete coming in on a 100% full ride scholar-ship and otherwise be penniless (or, same token, a brainiac), or you could be the 3rd child of a Texas oil baron who's never given any thought to money and intends to blow every dollar mommy and daddy send them on liquor and partying. anything in between. barring such rich parentage, I would probably advise aiming for a credit rating between 10 and 40

Suggested Contacts: I reviewed what the keepers guide had to say about it twice and I think I'd rather see contacts form organically during play, rather than start with some, after all, you're most likely hundreds of miles from home. If you were already envisioning playing a local. I think we can work out 1 or two local contacts. All players will be assumed to start with an academic advisor for navigating school matters. But we won't need to establish who this advisor is and how helpful they are until it comes up in play.

Amazing, thank you! Having rolled a 17 for Int and a 7 for App, I'm definitely feeling the basement-dwelling nerd archetype.

Rolls so far for reference: https://orokos.com/roll/m-Jaryn Went for the two luck rolls after reducing size and strength due to age.

Let me sit with this for a bit and let him grow 🙂

    Spoiler: Background
    Show

    Concept elements
    1) I have always loved computers and spend a lot of time online.
    2) People at high school often picked on me because of my appearance, but I always try and talk my way out of a confrontation rather than fight.
    3) I know I'm a bit of a stereotype, but I like rock music and wearing black, and the occult is interesting!
    4) I love puzzles. Like really, I love them.
    5) I can be quite shy unless I know you really well, particularly if you're an attractive woman

    Goals

    1) Now I'm at ETU, is really like to make the swimming team
    2) I'd like to be a forensic computer analyst for someone like the FBI when I finish education

    Secrets

    1) I've sent the last couple of years experimenting with hacking, more out of curiosity and boredom than anything else
    2) Matt's mother left when he was only a few months old - the person he thinks is his mother is actually his father's second wife. None of his siblings know this either, as they are both younger than him.

    People

    1) Michael Walker, my father - he had always been a very stable figure in my life. We're very different; he's a strict Baptist, very stern, and not that great with technology, but he's always been there for me. We have common ground in that we both enjoy fixing things. He likes mechanical stuff whereas I like electronics, but we get each other.

    2) Mia Lopez - she used to be in my class at school, and I've always had a massive crush on her. It turns out she's gone to ETU as well, although she's studying medicine. I still see her around on campus though; I just wish I could talk to her without getting tongue tied!

    3) Liam Taylor, aka Dreadnought - Liam likes the same bands as me, the same shows, and loves computers as much as I do. He's pretty much my best friend, even if we haven't ever met in real life. Still that's what IM and webcams are for.

    Memories

    1) It was a summer's day and I had driven down to Lake Canroe. I managed to find a quiet spot with no one else around and dived in. Just floating there, with the sun sparkling of the water and listening to the birds... It's the one time I remember being truly happy.

    2) This is really vague, but I remember doors banging and screaming, fire and pain. I was very small. I can't even remember whether I was home or not. I guess it's how I got these scars.

    3) Talking of scars, I remember my first day at school. No one spoke about them at home, but as soon as I was surrounded by other kids they all pointed and began to make faces. I ended up hiding in a corner of the playground until a teacher came to find me when I didn't turn up for the start of lessons. I've always been pretty self-conscious since then.

I'll pop all this in a character sheet and edit this to link to it, unless there is anything you'd like me to change?

I like what I'm seeing, I'm looking forward to the party dynamic.

I am going to kick the start date out for another week, it seems like people have been having trouble accessing the forum (including me) and I wanna give everyone who wants to play a chance to get in here and pitch a character.

so if we still don't have our 4+ people by .... the 11th. I guess we'll have to call it off.

Hello there, I'll put my interest in. I took part in a rp of the single player scenario a while back, but don't have a book available. I'll probably need a little help getting the character together. I think I just should start rolling up the characteristics in the video first?

I have got the basics of a character together, I'll be playing as Rowan Glass, although I'll see what characteristics I end up with before defining them more.

Welcome both, I'm eager to see what you guys come up with. I'm badgering our +1 to post a quick summary of their character.

I used to think I could count before I started working at a lab, but I'm pretty sure this will bring us up to the requisite 4 walking corpses Freshman Investigators.

Hi guys, I wanted to post and let everyone know that I'm the +1.

I'll be playing Skylar Faust, and with the way I rolled, she's apparently a tall, beautiful, brainiac ( 70 size, 85 appearance, 70 int). She's a veterinary medicine student at ECU. I'll post more background when I have a little more time.

I look forward to playing with you guys!

Ok, here is my character sheet and some other things:

Rolled fairly average on all things, except getting SIZ and POW high, so got an artist/cricketer hybrid, doing mostly art and materials, but with some history on the side.

I'm hoping to be playing as an overseas student, partly because I'm inevitably going to use English English the entire time.

    Spoiler: Character
    Show

    Concept Elements
    1) I've always had a passion for working with my hands, making statues and sculptures

    2) People have often been a bit intimidated by my size, and a few have tried to pick on me because of it. I gave as good as I got.

    3) I've been getting into the English Sport of Cricket, and all it's weirdness. I'm not too half bad at baseball, but it's never really felt the same.

    4) I never liked spending hours pouring over books, as it gets to me after a while.

    5) I tend to go where life takes me, so don't care too much about my surroundings, as long as it's interesting.

    Goals
I'd like to set up/join the cricket club, and maybe even play a test or two.

I want to enjoy myself here before returning home and securing a job thanks to a good foreign degree.

I want to establish myself as a prominent member of the Uni

    Secrets:
1: I've begun doing some wandering of the Uni grounds at night just to pass the time, even going to a few more private areas.

2: Rowan's Great-grandmother had a very bad experience travelling, meaning the family tends to hire a local to keep an eye on their children in far off places.

    People:
James Glass: Paternal Uncle: James lived nearby to me and actively encouraged my arts endeavours, despite my parents not thinking too much of it. We stay in regular contact. We like each other because we both understand how we need to express ourselves. He much prefers his small jazz group, but we have gone out to music gigs in the past together.

Paula Rendall-Jones: A first year from New England in the same seminar groups as me for my History classes. She's snobby and elitist, and sneers down at me. About the only thing we get along on is early American History, aside from that, we make sure to keep ourselves apart, otherwise we might both get thrown out.

Oscar Harris: My roommate and sports friend from Australia. We hit off quickly for liking the same things, such as Cricket, and we study and drink (or would drink if this country had a decent drinking age) together. He's much brighter than me and is going into Psychology.

    Memories:

    1) I remember my 10th birthday really well. We were out at the park with a cricket set, and I managed to get a hat trick against my Dad and Uncle. Took me years to realise they missed on purpose.

    2) One of my earliest memories is my parents shoving some old boxes into the loft and whispering a lot and look worried. I think it was my Great-Grandmother's stuff, but it was so long ago, and I was so young at the time, I don't remember much else.

    3) I once decided to go out for a few hours with a few friends when I was young, without telling my Mum and Dad. Next thing I remember, a policeman came around to us, threw me into the car, and brought me home. That really made me scared of police for a few years, and made me not like my parents too much for being so stringent.

    4) I honestly hate how Americans pronounce my Surname. Make's me sound like a donkey.

Yeah.... I suspected people would have problems, but I wanted people to be able to see an official one so they didn't miss out on any info they might need. The mythweavers sheet works fine though

One thing I am noticing, as far as the background elements on the sheets (things like "appearance" "meaningful locations" "valuable possessions" etc.) Those things have a game effect - specifically they can be used to help regain sanity. So while I'm not being critical of everyone's choices. Based on some of the stuff I'm seeing it occurred to me y'all probably didn't know that.

Cause, you know... how could you without the book?

I did actually put those details on the Chaosium sheet (with it's highly helpful auto-calculations), and have now transferred them to the mythweavers one. Added a few more flavour details as well.

Updated my character sheet a little.

I have added some extra stuff to meaningful locations, and a few traits, so hopefully they're in the right field. I will say if you have any advice about refining the character, please let me know, as I don't know how far I should specialise.

That aside, I am currently the close combatant, so therefore the most likely to die :P

EDIT: I've moved over to mythweavers now as well. I would have had to reupload it every time I did an update otherwise

If sanity melting collegiate hi-jinks sound fun and interesting to you, by all means, let's hop to it.

Then I saw I did stats wrong (thank you quick start rules) luckily I found another way to get the information I need but it might be tomorrow now as I edit things.

I'm willing to hold off the extra day while you get the numbers sorted out.

I'll probably go ahead and start working on the OPs for the OOC and IC thread and we'll move this discussion over there as soon as they're ready.

Joy, all my stats are between 11 and 14....super average boringness for the win.

Let's see how this works out.

Think that should be everything but if anything else is needed, let me know.

Alrighty, I've reviewed everyone's sheets again and they all look good. Here's the OOC Thread

I'll now begin working on the IC thread.
