PbP Maps?

I just started my first PbP game while in the DM's chair, and I've been having some difficulty making maps. Right now, I type the map into the post box inside quote tags, using _ to space things out. Does anyone have a better system? Especially, one that doesn't cost much money.

Just draw one with Gimp or something?

I drew up quick maps using Photoshop (but GIMP can serve as well). Layers let you move people around quickly and easily and it can be very modular.

Try a program designed for handling maps, something like OpenRPG or MapTool, that'll let you export stuff intended for online play so you can post it as an image.
