    Karan looked about, surprised. Turns out the Borsin were coming at them from a completely different angle than he thought! The humidity be must getting to him. Given his new found orientation in the world, he didn't seek jungle cover, as that would mean leaving everyone else behind. He waited to see how effective his arrows were before choosing his next move.

    Two of Karan's three arrows slammed home, sinking into the lead borsin's ribs and foreleg just above it's black-furred torso, yet it continued it's headlong charge towards the group.

    Ignasio puffed with disappointment as he realized that although in the middle of the jungle, he was somehow unable to find a tree trunk to anchor his web to.
    Still aiming for non violent practices he changed his waves and instead reached for a very small glass tube filled with what seemed to be ink of some sort and throw it ceremoniously into the area between them and the Borsin group. Chanting a few words with a rather monotonous and melancholy voice.
    Oh, yeah, he did forgot to tell the others not to step forward he thought as the area around the shattered tube became covered with a slippery, shiny black fluid.

    Alan looked at the pool of black flowing out over the field. It seemed Ignasio had a similar idea to Alan himself. No sense in throwing more magic at this challenge then needed, this is merely the first section of the temple, besides most of his arts created similar effects to the spell Ignasio had used and his killing gaze would either fall short or expose himself terribly. Sadly it seemed despite having the initiative in this fight caution remained the better part of valor.

    He thrust his arms forward and muttering a few syllables a dart of shadow slammed into the lead borsin.

    As Karan’s bowstring was twanging, Ignasio finished his gesticulations, bringing forth a greasy patch in the short grasses immediately in front of the charging borsin. The big male went down, skidding through the patch and ending up at Thorik’s feet as the dwarf charged forth and laid into the creature with his axe. Two more of the pride slipped down as they came on while the others avoided the patch, though Thorik managed to take a cut with his weapon as one went past, leaving a bloody streak along its hindquarters.[1]

    Alan and Cederick unleashed their magic on the downed beast, slinging a dusk arrow and eldritch blast into it respectively. It looked badly, badly injured.

    One of the beasts charged at Thorik, looming over the warrior and slashing with a thick clawed hand, but he ducked easily under the blow. The other three continued on, crashing into the group on the roadway. Karan sustained a superficial slash of a claw, but otherwise the party held.[2] Axwheel met one of the borsin with a smash of her axe while Henekki and his fellow guards took down another of the beasts. Even in their cloud-sickened condition the creatures looked fierce, but their big, unarmored bodies made for inviting targets.[3]

    [1] Three of the borsin fail their saves and go down in the grease patch, though because they were charging they do slide out of the area and into the plain grass. Thorik hits the silverback for 10 damage, then gets an AoO on another as it passes by and hits for another 10 points of damage
    [2] Karan takes a claw hit for 5 damage
    [3] Axwheel hits, and three of the guards combine to all hit and kill borsin 7.
    So borsin numbers 1, 2, and 4 are prone, with number 1 being nearly pummeled to death. Numbers 3, 5, and 6 have been wounded.

    A red crescent appeared on the dusty road as the drops of blood from Karan's slashed cheek dropped down from his shaking head. He quickly drew three more arrows and slammed them, point blank, at the Borsin in front of him. Such a waste, the spreading crescent seemed to say. Such a stupid waste

    Thorik looks slightly surprised at the pile of sliding Borsin around him, thankful for the slippery spot on the battlefield that may have kept him from being overrun.
    He eyes up B3 as it tries to claw him, and decides to deal with that one first, then worry about the fallen ones.

    "Is that the best ya got, ya great oaf?", he taunts as he takes two mighty swings with his axe.

    Forgot that using a ranged weapon up close was a problematic move, so:


    Karan thought that his headshaking would have a more dramatic effect if the enemey could see him from more of a distance, so he took a 5' step to his right before engaging in said drama, hoping B5 would appreciate his effort before being stuck with three arrows.

    Ignasio watched the havoc caused by his spell without satisfaction. This worked, as advertised, but the poor creatures seemed as if they were welcoming their death rather than rejecting it.
    He shrugged with resignation, raised his crossbow and carefully aimed for one of the Borsins lying prone next to Thorik. Better make it quick, take them out of their misery and us out of this sorry place.

    Alan watched as the borsin tripped around and died. While they were certainly more fierce then he would have guessed from their appearance so far they weren't accomplishing to much damage. He debated throwing another dart of shadow, but an opportunity to save the energy had appeared and he felt it might be better to save his limited incantations for when the enemy was stronger. He sidestepped to flank with Axewheel against the nearest borsin (B6) and hit it with his sickle.

    In the chaos of battle, with the big quadrupeds charging into their line on the road, Karan had little room to operate. He tried to find space, but he had to intersperse dodging blows with getting shots off, and only one of his arrows found its mark, but he did manage to duck the borsin’s attacks. [1] Enraged, the beast he had just sunk his arrow into counterattacked with a flurry of blows. Karan blocked the slashing claws, but the borsin bit him in the shoulder, sinking a pair of canines through the ranger’s armor and into tender flesh. [2]

    Axwheel and Alan bracketed the other borsin still alive that had made it through Ignasio’s grease trap, both laying into the creature to bring it down.[3]

    Thorik was a one-dwarf wrecking crew, smashing the life out of his still-standing opponent before finishing off the old silverback bull when it tried to rise out of the grass. A claw did rake him from the other borsin which stood up while he was busy finishing off the others.[4] Cederick managed to deliver a glancing blast on the creature, while two of the guards started to move into support position.

    The other guards put themselves to good use as well, with Henneki quickly moving into position to deliver another accurate strike on the beast trying to bite Karan’s head off, and Nephi slashing from the other side. [5]

    [1] There isn’t anywhere Karan can step to avoid an attack of opportunity, but in stepping to his right he is actually subject to AoO’s from both B5 and B6, but they both miss anyway.
    [2] Karan takes 6 points of bite damage
    [3] They combine to kill B6
    [4] Thorik takes 6 damage from B2, and B4 has stood up and started towards him.
    [5] Guards hit for 10 damage on B5, it is almost down.

    OK, everyone can declare actions for the next round, but before doing so each of you make a LISTEN check; Alan and Karan each get a +2 bonus on their checks.

    Karan was cursing himself for a fool. Choosing the wrong weapon for a fight just because he liked it better? What was he, a child? Still, bad decisions had consequences, so he stepped back a few paces, where he could get a better shot - and let Alan and Axwheel do some of the fighting. He kept his eyes on the raging and bloodied borsin before him, but tried to use his other senses to see if anything else of note was occuring.

    Alan smiled as the borsin went down. This fight was going well, and it seemed unlikely to end in anything but victory at this point. It seemed wasteful to spend another one of his few prepared mysteries to end this fight. For now he would stick to attacking with his sickle swapping with Karan into a flanking position against B5.

    Ignasio found himself slightly unemployed as most Borsins were either dead or soon to be so.
    He decided not to chance another long range shot with the gourds standing between him and possible targets so he spent a few seconds moving and trying to find a good angle in case something went wrong.

    tempted though she was to leave the guards to finish the borsin close to them, Axwheel didn't want to risk any of them getting hurt unnecessarily, and so stepped forward to help them finish off the last of the borsin on the road (B5).

    The sound of pounding of hooves arose suddenly from the other side of the old road, charging up behind the expedition. Those who had been towards the rear of the first engagement suddenly found themselves on the front line as three more borsin—very possibly those that Karan had originally spotted amongst the ruins to the left of the gatehouse—crashed into their line. [1]

    Nephi was slow to raise his spear in defense and took a long, deep wound from one borsin’s claw while Fastas received another if not as deadly one. Axwheel parried the attack of the third before she crossed over and delivered a fatal strike to the previous borsin.[2]

    Thorik cut down a third borsin with two solid blows, but the final member of the original group came after him, rending with both claws and biting the dwarf’s forearm for good measure. Both Cederick and Ovari managed managed to score minor hits on the creature as it tore into Thorik. [3]

    [1] Everyone one other than Ignasio and Thorik hear the additional borsin coming and therefore are not flat-footed when they strike. The new borsin get a good initiative roll, however, and attack first.
    [2] 10 points of damage to Nephi and 7 to Fastas. Axwheel finishes off B5.
    [3] The borsin hits with two claw attacks and they have the rend ability so the damage is increased. Thorik takes a painful 27 points of damage from the three hits. Cederick and Ovari combine for 10 points of damage in retaliation.

    OK, a couple of unresolved items:

    • Alan misses his attack, but he can still decide where to move to with the presence of new foes
    • Ignasio becomes aware of the borsin once the slam into the line, so he can take an action if he chooses
    • Karan can select a foe and make his attack rolls

    Enough was enough, these filthy brutes were far overdue for their appointment with the afterlife. Alan stepped forward to get an angle on the newcomers, which did sadly involve getting nearer to Ignacio, but thankfully the man seemed actually focused on the matter at hand. With a call to the shadows bolts of darkness flew from his eyes into the newly arrived Borsin, narrowly missing the guards.

Assuming that's correct though I'm going to step up next to Ignacio and cast Killing Shadows. I should be able to angle the 30' cone so it hits all the Borsin and misses the guards if I'm looking at the map right.

    Ignasio found himself, completely by mistake, at a perfect spot to deal with the new threat, this unexpected tactical brilliance on his side was so surprising that he found himself fumbling trying to understand what to do with it.
    He did recover though and smiled as he noted how the three new threats were so perfectly aligned for him, just like in the practice hall of the academy before he was thrown away for this reason or another.
    He really liked this spell, no annoying side effects like with those pesky lightning missiles, and the visual effect! What a treat to behold.
    He added some flourish to his gestures and words, making them wide and loud enough for all to behold his magnificence.

    Two more heavy blows with his axe and Thorik found all his foes defeated. Splatters of blood and gore coated not only his blade and axe handle, but his armor, hands, and face. Nonetheless, an impressive pile of bodies lay at his feet.

    At the back of the party, Karan buried three arrows into the fiercest of the borsin that had charged in, yet the beast withstood the barrage, baring huge canines at the half-orc. That was when Ignasio unleashed a metallic rainbow of of colors, washing the hues across the row of borsin. Two of them were stunned where they stood, only the middle of the three resisted. Its reprieve was short-lived.

    Alan's magic followed almost immediately after. The borsin on the far end, already with three of Karan's arrows in him and blinded by Ignasio, dropped dead, while the others took massive damage from the killer shadows. The remining two were reeling, one blinded and stunned, and in moments Axwheel and the guards had finished them off.

    Silence fell around Madaro-Shanto once more.

    Karan looked around him in dismay, and walked a wide arc around the bodies, following the path the second group of attackers took, checking to see if there were any more surprises in store from the Borsin or other creatures in the area.

    Karan will let the others deal with the aftermath of the battle (carving the creatures for supper, Ignasio & Axwheel?) and is going on a small scouting mission towards the entrance to the city, beginning with where he first spotted the borsin and then going over to where the other group made itself visible. As a preemptive measure, let's roll some dice:

    He's also still got the Detect Snares & Pit spell activated.

    His hat did not fall off his head this time around, but that was the only positive Ignasio could find bout this fight. This had no glory nor valor to it and obviously these creatures were suffering. Maybe it was for the best, he thought, that we at least provided them with an honorable death on the field of battle, with their fangs striking and teeth biting.
    He placed his crossbow back on his back and moved a little forward, trying to pretend all those bodies were not there at all
