Hey everyone, this is the Out of Character thread for FyreByrd's Red Hand of DOOM! Again congratulations for being selected. Below will be a table with short details on the characters, with links, as much for my reference as anyone elses, but it's there if you want it.

    IC Thread

Below is a edited map of Elsir Vale. We will be starting IN Drellin's Ferry, a small town at the far western edge of the Vale. Should your character be based in the Vale, you'll need an excuse as to why you're in town for a few days. If you've been travelling/have no background in the Vale, you've just arrived in the town today, almost certainly from the East along the Dawn Way, maybe...maybe from the south, but certainly not from the North or West. As the game starts it's early evening.

Currently there is little to no knowledge of any serious threat....but gather information/relevant knowledge checks/talking with townsfolk might net you a few rumours.

For those wanting an excuse as to why they've travelled to the Vale, there has been rumours of a ruined keep called Vraath Keep, that is likely stuffed full of treasure, including a still intact library of forbidden knowledge, and the fact that it's also just as likely haunted shouldn't put you off in the slightest.

Below is a some detail about the town/Vale if that helps.

    Drellin's Ferry
    Spoiler
    Show

At the spot where the Dawn Way crosses the River Elsir stands the small town of Drellin's Ferry, once known as Dwarfbridge.

    Key POI:
    3: Speaker Wiston's House
4: The Green Apple, a common Inn, a favourite of the locals
    5: Morlin's Smithy
    6: Shrine of Pelor
10: The Old Bridge Inn, a good inn, often used by travellers staying the night
    11: Jarrett's Sundries, a general store
    12: Delora's Livery Stable
14: The Ferry accross the Elsir
18: Sterrel's Provisioning, a store selling useful equipment for travellers

    Elsir Vale
    Spoiler
    Show

A thinly populated valley stretching around 250 miles east-west, bordered by mountain ranges, and thick forests. It's summer which means the days are long and warm, almost hot, with generally good weather apart from the occasional thunderstorm. The Dawn way connects the eastern end of the Vale to the western end, and has an amount of traffic going through, mainly merchants walking the path, and trading at each of the small settlements along the way. Brindol, in the centre of the Valley, and Dennovar at the eastern tip are the most populous places, yet still retain a more small town feel, than settlements of their size in less isolated places might. Skull Gorge is a deep cleft in the landscape, that is crossed by a heavy stone bridge.

While the area is mostly peaceful and calm, sensible people stick to the roads and paths, as this is very much a frontier land, and the further you go off the beaten track, the more likely something may take exception to your trespass.

We'll start the IC thread shortly, once people have checked in, there'll be an amount of free roleplaying time at the start to get you used to your characters so feel free to have fun with that, and make any adjustments you need to on your sheet/fluff.

    Reminders:
    * Please make sure your Initiative is kept up to date and I know of anything that may situationally modify it, as I will be rolling init for everyone.
    * If you haven't done already please have a wishlist of magic items/gear your character would want, so I can customise treasure appropriately.

    Conventions:
    * I'd prefer spoken text to be Coloured and BOLD. Internal thought to be Coloured ITALIC. Please when you check in here, post your colour request. If I do any combat maps, this will be your colour on the map as well.
    * Any animal companions or similar will act on your turn in intiative, they won't be seperated out, so make sure you include you and any companions actions on your turn
    * Most rolls should be done in the same IC post as your actions, sometimes that's not possible, or I may ask you for an additional roll, they can be done in the OOC thread
    * I'll make use of either named spoilers or PM's for private information, please respect them :)
    * Time as I've mentioned before is important in this adventure, so on EVERY one of my IC posts there will the Day, and an approxiamate time(Likely: morning/afternoon/evening/night), to help us all keep track
    * Enemies of the same type will share intiative, so for instance if you are facing 5 Hobgoblin warriors, and 3 Hobgoblin Clerics, the Clerics will all act together, and the warriors will all act together, again just to help streamline combat a bit
    * I will be rolling spot/listen and other similar checks for you, however if you choose to roll some yourself, I will ALWAYS take your result, regardless of which was better. You likely won't see my rolls, as a lot of the time I don't want you forewarned of things!
    * There is almost always more information available, so if you have a question about something in game, ask, I may ask for a relevant check but I will not be handfeeding you lots of information, you will have to work for it.

    The Redveil cabal
(not the first time I use Endless Legend artwork for a character. That game really has some gorgeous and flavourful stuff)

    Seeker

    Description
    Spoiler
    Show
Utterly hairless, Seeker has a severe face not known to smile with piercing grey eyes and rough-hewn features. While most illumians wear facial makeup he opted for magical tattoos, fading away and getting renewed each day in a ritual that tests both his skill and tolerance for pain. The lines and markings are never the same but almost always seem disinviting, a longstanding illumian tradition to keep others at a distance. Like all illumians he has luminous sigils of an insubstantial blue-white orbiting his head, magic runes of the language that is the source of their power.

His body is athletic with well-defined muscles, though most of his strength comes from skill and control rather than raw physical power and is well in excess of what someone of his size should be able to achieve. A white cloak embroidered with runes in the elemental languages covers most of his form clad in loose-fitting grey robes.

    Personality
    Spoiler
    Show
Contemplative and focused, Seeker never wastes a word or move but when he does speak and act it is with purpose and conviction. He can be intense, but never loud or brash and very rarely overcome with visible displays of emotion. Like most illumians he is dedicated to learning and knowledge in its multitude of forms and both ambitious and competitive, seeking to measure and test his skills to find the path to selfimprovement wherever possible.

    History
    Spoiler
    Show
Elsir Vale. For centuries, the Redveil cabal of the illumians had stayed hidden away, unperturbed in this place with little worth taking. In generations of peace and quiet, at times secretly aided by illumian agents who by various means dissuaded potential disturbances, the secretive cabal has collected a vast reservoir of knowledge. But what it hasn't collected is military strength and a single careless step by a passing army might eradicate that which required centuries to build.

Redveil Sekaroth has by now spent several years outside the cabal in search of an ancient text of knowledge rumored to predate the existing human settlements of the Vale. With time, in human company he has come to identify himself as Seeker, describing both his function and approximating the name of a language alien to those around him. Once out of the monastery he discovered himself a traveler by heart and has sought out many places both in service to his mission and to collect a vast array of skills and knowledge. Building on his people's connection to the plane of shadow contrasted by the inner fire of his self he acquired power over light and dark, a study in contrast he often contemplates in deep meditation. Where other illumians seek magic he seeks the perfect control of the flesh and the strength flowing from the connection between mind and body, drawing supernatural power not from spell but sheer will and control.

With war on the horizon the protection of his hidden cabal becomes his utmost goal and he would take any measure to turn away or defeat the threat.

    Greetings everyone.

I will be speaking in bold royalblue.

    Hrm.

First of all, thanks for having me for this!

Rush will use this color to speak with, "And think with,"

Nope. That's too close to Cygnia's... I'll use this one instead.

I am going to alter her backstory to say she sort of lives in the Pelor shrine, rather than follow Elhonna which would make much more sense as she calls her weapon the Sun Sword. She's a fixture there; she's the groundskeeper, not the priest, and has been here for at least a few years if not a decade, though she often disappears to wander the woods in solace. She always comes back on a day of worship, however.

If anybody's PC tried to make friends with her I won't refuse the offer, but In-Character they would have had to try very hard or been ultra compassionate to win her over.

Nobody but the priest, however, is aware she is a Soul Knife or has some baller death armor that she's pulling out of storage for this adventure.

I have 530gp left which is going towards a Heavy Warhorse, studded leather barding and a military saddle, but can I just say she gets all this from the Livery on the map at some point early on in game?

I’ll take purple for my character. It turns out my sheet still has some leftover money, so I’m snagging a few more items.

Edit: changed to more obvious shade of purple.

@tonberryking - I was just going through all of the sheets to get a feel for what we can do when I saw that you switched your god to Pelor. That matches Paige, who was raised in the Pelor church of Dennovar. While probably not friends due to Paige's constant traveling as a caravan guard, she'd definitely have been to the shrine here in Ferry on several occasions.

Side note: You've got 2 flaws and traits listed, but we're only using 1 of each.

Between Paige's draconic aura (vigor) and Siovhan's augmented healing abilities, I'd say the team has some amazing sustainability.

Both Siovhan and Fayra are great faces.

Seeker and Fayra have great skills for scouting, along with Alma's ability to be a "regular wild animal".

Alma and Fayra have control spells.

Paige and Rush are melee brutes, with Fayra, Seeker, and Alma/summons as flankers.

Siovhan is adept at ranged attacks, with Rush and Seeker able to switch hit to ranged as needed.

Yeah, looks quite well balanced, though I don't see myself doing much ranged attacks except the occasional ranged trip with bolas when I can't reach melee. My trip bonus is quite crazy especially with an Inspiration point, Mighty Throw and a Brute Gauntlets charge. Or to sum it up.

If they have an ass, I can knock them on it.
If they don't have an ass, I'll figure something else out.

If things get really wonky on the healing front, I'm considering Touch of Healing or Spontaneous Healer as her next feat. I just like some of those protection and utility spells to have.

Also, didn't spend all her gold JUST in case Siovhan needed to restock on something like diamond dust for Restoration spells.

I don't expect we'll be hitting a level where I can take more feats any time soon unless I start dipping into fighter...

Actually, I should probably address that: I am always going to take Soul Knife as one part of the gestalt. Illumine Soul however is only 5 levels.

I can always get more rage from blowing an "Every 3rd level" feat on it.

However, beyond improving the rage, I dunno if it's worth the d12 sticking with barbarian but if I swapped to fighter I could get more Cleave related feats/combat feats in general... but what's your guys' thoughts?

I'm always of the opinion that feats need to be things that can be used almost every battle or out of battle.

If bad guys can be cleaved, they're probably not really a threat anyway.

Hm, I need to come up with an explanation why Seeker hasn't checked out Vraath Keep long ago, his cabal is in the Vale and he has been seeking hidden knowledge for years. Perhaps he tried once before but either failed to find the reputed treasure or couldn't overcome whatever creatures inhabited the keep back then?

tonberryking, I was thinking, maybe Rush and Seeker had a run-in while she was still mentally controlled and parted after an inconclusive fight? I can certainly see that my illumian cabal wouldn't feel hot about a wizard like the one described in her backstory establishing himself near them.

That could be a strong hook for why she needs to join an adventuring party, because she needs a group of other adventurers to help out with getting in there.

Fallen- Sure! I have no problem with that, but I am left with two questions:

    1) Would he recognize Rush as she is now, not an armored and masked wood elf with a shaved head but a groundskeeper with a bad haircut and sackcloth robes?

    2) ...Would he have approached her about it if he did?

Sorry for the delay in joining you. This is an exciting group.

I'll take "Red" as Alma's speech colour, less because it matches her than because it's the most distinctive but readable colour left, I think. Tonberry, I'll apologize in advance if I occasionally forget and post in purple. Alma's <Telepathic Speech will look like this.> and her Interior thoughts will look like this.

I've played in two previous RHOD, both of which ground to a halt during or right after the first combat. Because of this, I was finding it difficult to ignore this knowledge as I sought to pick a favoured enemy for Alma. Fyrebird, would you be willing to pick her favoured enemy for me? I'll be fine with whatever you choose.

In terms of helping out the group, Alma probably won't be a big damage dealer, but with telepathy and battlefield control can help to coordinate activities.

I'm just working to spend my last few coins and pick one last feat. Fyrebird, would you consider allowing a fire version of the Acid Breath 3rd level wizard spell? I don't really want to use the spell itself, but it would allow me to power the fiery burst reserve feat.

Edit: Did someone say "forbidden knowledge"? Alma would be all over that, and I'm happy to make Vrath Keep the reason that she's in the neighborhood.

yeah that's fine, there'll be a few hours before nightfall on the first day that allows a bunch of roleplaying, including spending any money you would rather do IC rather than OOC.

Sure, this is why I didn't mention the unselected favoured enemy, I wondered if you were trying to resist...certain things.

My choice is Humanoid(Reptillian): There is a significant Lizardfolk population to the north of the vale in the marshes there, that are suitable for both combat and roleplaying applications for the favoured enemy, without it being super metagamey!

    That's fine!

I'd say it's more interesting if he realizes later on who she is once she suits up. He wouldn't actually hold a grudge about it. She cut him well, he threw her down a slope, neither re-engaged. It was a good fight and the first time he got to see a mindblade.

It's fine by me, as long as everyone else is fine with it.

Most of the conversation around the tavern is the usual village fair, the weather, the crops, local village gossip. A number of times it seems like other conversations may start, but then are shied away from. Your general impression is that there are things people want to talk about, but are not quite ready/confident to, However it is still early, and the inn is relatively empty.

I'm figuring Siovhan wants to know the layout of the town better -- I swear, she's not trying to be an aloof lone wolf by not being in the inn!

We're even going to the inn preferred by locals instead of travelers. Well, Seeker just sees the others going there and does likewise instead of checking for another.

Even when a DM tries to not start things in a tavern....they start in a tavern!

Price for meal and one nights board is 8sp(5sp board/3sp meal) at the Green Apple, a single tankard of ale/similar is 5cp, and if anyone should feel generous enough to buy the bar a round there are currently 20 other patrons not including party members in the Green Apple.

Other than the usual kind of gossip that you would get in a fairly small community there isn't much talk of interest going on. You do notice that there is a slight tension in the tavern, whether that's the product of their being a few strangers in the bar, or something else you are unsure.

Vraath keep was a small stone fortress in the possession of the Vraath family. The final occupant had two somewhat unhealthy obessessions, the first: knowledge of death and the afterlife, the second the desire for privacy. It was this second desire that caused him to have a more intimate knowledge of the first, as he started a senseless and utterly unnecessary fued with a small tribe of local forest giants, which resulted in his and his family's deaths, and the abandonment of the family estate.

On your exploration of the town you notice that most of the houses, are of simple, but well made construction, mainly timber based, with the occasional bigger more secure building being made of stone. You have also noted that for the most part the townsfolk are friendly, if a little reticent to indulge in too much detail about the town and it's environs.

Well, at least we won't burn it down. Hopefully.

Though it feels like those big guys might be out to start something, so no guarantees.
