Any sufficiently determined dog is a lap dog. Thankfully, the big dogs I know recognise that they need to be invited up, even if they are waiting for the invite.

I love how Yay is seriously offended (or, less probable, faking being such) in the last panel there. Somebody used to dealing with people from an enormously more powerful position is not going to react well the being effectively blown off like that.

Yep, that sounds very familiar. I grew up with Newfoundlands - if there's ever a breed that proves Yay wrong about big dogs being intimidating, it's a 6ft long "grizzly bear" that cries when she can't quite make it up onto the sofa for a cuddle.

... I'm not sure how creepy Yay is being right now?

Like, maybe they should be smart enough to know that "come over any time" is not literal, but at least they're purposely establishing a potential boundary rather than tread over it and cite the rule.

And I'm fairly certain that they wouldn't hack Elliot's door open (or whatever unscrupulous way they'd get access to his apartment) outside of a dire emergency.

    So, uh... tentative thumbs-up?

I think it's leaning into their "still learning not to abuse her power" thing. They have realised that they should ask permission before entering someone's home, but hasn't quite grasped the nuances of that person being asleep, or that it's at least polite to pretend that they doesn't already know his door-code.

I don't think they're intentionally being creepy, just that no one has expressly told her that entering their home at 2am to play with a pet while the owner is sleeping, is weird. As they proved with Roko, literal-mindedness is one of their traits and Elliot did say "any time" after all...

I agree; tentative thumbs-up. They're learning, but not quite there yet.

I'm pretty sure Melon is supposed to be seen as an outlier, but it seems to be.. not exactly normal but not uncommon (like a largish minority) for AIs to not be socialized to human standards or have not internalized some of the things about human culture that most actual humans just assume nobody has to state explicitly. Things like 'you don't cross the boundaries of somebody else's living space without direct invitation' and 'about half of what anybody says is not meant to be literal.'

That actually seems fairly plausible to me. Remember, AIs have only been around for a few years at most. It makes sense to me that it would take time to figure out how to properly socialize AIs.

Clinton's arguments aren't well thought out there, in all likelyhood AI would get separate leagues unless the improbable happens and they are all roughly human level at it (which with how QC treats them as weird humans is possible). Yes tall people can play basketball which is why few small people can hack it at the top level of basketball. (Looking the shortest NBA players of all time the shortest is at 1.60 but place 10 is already at 1.75m (5’9”)) Introducing AI to esports (any sport really without chassis limitations) would eliminate human players from the professional level. We have seen smarter than human AIs they wouldn't just have no input error they should be able to act and think much faster and analyze everything at a deeper level. Also who says a pitching machine can't be the body of an AI?

I suppose you could figure out a way to do something like weight classes since many AI seem to be just human level.

It's also interesting to note with regard to the basketball example, that the NBA - which sets the trends for other leagues - has changed the rules over time in a way that disadvantages extremely tall players by limiting the amount of time they can spend in close proximity to the net (the width of the paint was doubled in 1951 specifically to inhibit the dominance of 6'10" George Mikan, then one of the tallest players in the league) and what they can do there, especially on defense. Oh, and by adding the 3-point shot which drastically changes the overall math of shooting and disadvantages interior dominance. Consequently the most impactful players in the modern game are now shorter than those of the previous generation, despite overall increases in player heights due to nutrition and a broader recruitment pool.

Leagues compensate. So in the input errors case, I imagine that esports leagues would mandate embodiment and use of a human-functional interface for all AI competitors, probably with restrictions on the chassis in terms of fine motor control, essentially cramming them into a human-equivalent form. This would make sense from an entertainment perspective anyway, no one wants to watch a pair of immobile boxes compete against each other.

It's been interesting watching NBA teams "follow the math" on three-pointers and then failing to find success. What we find (what some of us already knew) is that there's more to shoot selection than raw scoring efficiency.

Im just wondering if this is meant to be an AI version of the argument over trans athletes playing in the league whose gender they identify as and the uproar over that.

I dont think its meant to be a direct analogue, but to be coming from similar places.

As somebody who follows E-sports, the existing AI-s can already out control any human player, period. Our only advantage is our ability to think laterally around a problem and basically trick the AIs into doing things that dont help them win. But QC level AIs wouldnt fall for that, so if you allow them to compete directly with humans without forcing them to be embodied as was suggested above, humans wont be able to compete in E-sports anymore.

In a way, we already human/AI separation in chess as there is obviously a ban on using AI for human matches (quite a few people actually got caught cheating recently as all the events moved online) and there are separate matches between different chess algorithms even with official world championships being held regularly since 1974.

Kinda was hoping it'd go in an "asexual but still romantic" (or whatever the 'hip' term is, not that there needs to be shorthand) direction, but I guess par for the course, everyone needs to be sexually interested in another person to be even mildly attracted to them in this community.

Also, I don't recall any comics showing outright disinterest in Clinton, if anything, just a lack of interest but that's because most of their scenes are pretty casual.
