In other news, guys, I am working on a replacement for Niobaran at the moment. :)

Also - I assume it's back to fast pace again with Njal scouting ahead, as it was before the rat pack attack and bearing in mind the disadvantages to Spot and so forth that a fast pace brings on?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm all in favour of a fast pace, since Verglas will most likely fail the spot checks anyway.

    Greetings all,
Saintheart contacted me with regards to this game, and I would be honored to join you.

I have updated my character sheet (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2192010)

Wound any of you be offended if I claimed Red for Ramiro monk of the hidden flame.

Damn inbox is full of snow again. Have now cleared it! Welcome aboard, Nova! - guys, please make our new player welcome.

In terms of how we introduce him, I'm inclined to just disappear Maxis and pretend like Ramiro was with you the whole time. It's easier and less awkward than Ye Olde Conveniently Placed Prisoner and it'll get him into the game a bit quicker I hope. Let's have Nova present in the scene and good to go and we'll go from here, yeah?

Welcome, Novabomb. Good to have you with us. Ramiro looks badass!

I'm totally fine with having Ramiro morph into place alongside us, as Maxis fades away. Can we stipulate that he's the one who chased off the wolves and got the dire warning that the wolf is going to pee on him someday?

Yeah, I know, but that's how Verglas remembers the encounter!

Welcome! Red is all yours. I'll double-down on what Toliudar said...Ramiro looks awesome! Glad to have another one of the faithful join our band

It would be a real shame if Tarak's threat faded with Maxis, but I went back and re-read it. He marked the Firewoman...and all of us. I'm not sure how Novabomb feels about being saddled with the fallout from Maxis' actions, but if he's part of the pack now, he's getting marked either way.

I definitely do not mind Ramiro being the one to have personally antagonized the great wolf.

As you wish; Ramiro was the guy who saw off Tarak and his pack. Pretty impressive for a 17 year old totally unarmed at the time!

P.S. Riggd, Maxis healed the whole party up to full HP after the last fight, you're at full hitpoints (the disease problems for Verglas and Roland remain).

While we're just waiting on DrK to see what Njal does in response to the rest of the party ... I was just looking to confirm what the party's doing once it stops for the night. Nightfall is pretty much as far as the party can go since the horses don't have darkvision, and in terms of protection from the cold it looks like the party is basically okay:

    - Njal has a portable hut which covers ten feet square meaning it's cramped but all four of you can sleep in there if need be. On its own this provides level 3 protection from cold, so it's enough and more to counter the current Severe Cold conditions even if the temperature drops further to -50 and thus Extreme Cold.
    - The horses will have to stay outside, but the Endure Elements cast this morning lasts 24 hours, so they'll be good to sunrise - and again, that spell is good for levels of cold up to Extreme Cold, so they don't suffer from the lack of shelter as such.
    - Gromrir didn't get his own casting of Endure Elements, but he gets level 2 protection from being a furry good boi anyway and will likely make his way inside the tent if it gets any colder, i.e. you may wake up with a large doggy sleeping right next to you.
    - I'll assume that Njal, Roland, and Ramiro take turns on watch since Verglas needs a solid 8 hours of sleep to recover her spells. That said, it can be taken that all the boys get enough sleep so nobody's fatigued.
    - Everyone got an Endure Elements spell on them this morning, so they don't suffer ill effects at night while on watch even if the temperature does drop further. Roland can't sleep in his armour without being fatigued I think, so you take the risk that it isn't his watch if something horrible comes calling ... although even then Endure Elements would allow him to fight buck-naked in a snowdrift if it came to that.

Everyone will need to mark off a trail ration for today - along with trail rations to account for those who threw some food to the wolf; you can't forage when travelling at fast pace. So by my count that means Verglas marks off 1, Roland marks off 3, and Njal marks off 1. Ramiro has Everlasting Rations, so doesn't have to mark anything off.

(EDIT: I forgot Njal has actual chunks of meat in his pack. Two of these need to be marked off: one for what was tossed to the wolf, and one for Gromrir's dinner tonight as the poor doggy hasn't had the chance to go hunting while you've been driving northeast.)

Also don't forget to deduct one feed bag each for Ember and Stormrir.

Your waterbags have frozen solid, but that can be remedied over a campfire.

So that really leaves us with one important roll: the Navigation check. As the houserules describe, the person with the best Survival check makes this roll, and for both practical and in-game reasons that'll be Njal since he's been leading you across the Valley. This roll is at a -4 because of the fast pace being set, so that'd be at 1d20+6 on my calculation.

This check determines whether or not you are currently on target for the Old Fort in accordance with the map, but you may not necessarily know whether that roll is successful unless (most obviously) the journey ends up taking longer than the estimated time to reach the Old Fort (i.e. around noon tomorrow). But let's not get ahead of ourselves on that one - for the moment, all that's needed is a 1d20+6 for the day's navigation.

Also to be noted is that the complication pool will very likely tick over during the night, and that roll will be made out in the open here once I know what Njal's about to do.

Njal will agree to crack on with the others and will pitch his tent, giving some of the blankets to help cover the horses with additional layers. He'll make a survival check to make a nest/igloo/berm to protect the horses

Survival to make a nest for the horses (1d20+10)[22]
    Navigation check (1d20+6)[10]

EDIT: Well, I guess we'll be lost, but at least we'll be warm

We can certainly assume Njal's effort at creating a berm as a windbreak for the horses works out just fine.

With that passing of time, the Complication Pool hits 6 out of 6. And so it's time to roll, remembering a 1 on any of the 6d6 results in a Complication...

The only other notable activity for Verglas, once we camp, would be a thorough investigation of Roland's hammer. Possibly relevant rolls:

    Knowledge (Arcana): (1d20+10)[13]
    Knowledge (History): (1d20+9)[26]
    Knowledge (Religion) (1d20+6)[25]

Just a quick note that I'm out of town for 5 days or so as of tomorrow, guys, so my updates might be a bit slower over that time period. At the moment there isn't anything that requires me to draw up combat maps so I should be still able to post now and then, but just signalling that my update speed will probably be a bit reduced.

It's interesting how the pandemic times have taken us centuries backward in terms of how we might look at travelling. For a long time, there were a few people who travelled constantly as part of their work - merchants, sailors, tinkerers - but most people spent almost their entire time in on around one place. In the twentieth century, we had contemporary concepts of tourism, and suddenly significant chunks of the population spent weeks or months each year doing long distance travel.

And now we're back to a few people - mostly truckers, sailors and technical specialists - travelling frequently. And for the rest of us, long distance travel is once again dangerous. And once again laced with some hints of danger. Sadly.

I miss all the parts of the world that I haven't seen yet.

I hadn't really thought of it like that. For the time being, we've reverted back to a situation where the minority travel while the majority stay cloistered in their community. It hardly matters that the world didn't get any bigger. I can still hop on a plane and make a trip my ancestors wouldn't have dreamed possible, but I don't, and I'm not sure when I will again. It's strange to think that where my ancestors stayed close to home out of fear of the unknown, we stay home out of fear of what we know perfectly well.

If there's any solace I can take from this line of thought, it's that at least there's no barrier to communication across long distance. Where those merchants and sailors from centuries past left home for months or years with maybe a few letters between them and their families, now it's quite easy to share these thoughts with strangers across the planet. Kind of a nice reminder that even though we're suffering from a global problem, we're all doing it together.

Is there any further information I can provide you which might help with you guys deciding which way to go with this, i.e. chase down the Frost Folk or continue making for Lastbreath Pass and the Old Fort at the southern end?

I feel like Verglas' rationale for wanting to plow on along their previously determined course is pretty clear - she considers it their best shot at survival. If there's a reason to pursue a tangent with the frost folk, regardless of whose skull that is, she doesn't know it. And I don't get why we would care about random murder in the face of a blizzard, but I'm open to understanding better.

But if the others make a convincing arguement he'll move along with the others still after this wayward girl
